The Red Devils came from 2-0 down on Tuesday evening to draw with Burnley.

Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood netted for the Clarets before Paul Pogba and Victor Lindelof saved Solskjaer’s blushes.

Pogba, who has been on fire under Solskjaer, fired home from the penalty spot before Lindelof’s 92nd minute equaliser.

And while Solskjaer insisted Manchester United didn’t deserve to lose against Burnley, the Red Devils boss claimed his side were too slow with the ball.

He said: “The comeback was brilliant, the players have been asked about how they would react if they went 1-0 or 2-0 down so I felt the comeback was fantastic.

“We had loads of chances, loads of possession, we didn’t deserve to lose. But we did it to ourselves really.

“We fought, that wasn’t the problem. We were just too slow in possession in the first half.

“For the first goal we played our way into trouble.

“It wasn’t the attitude, the application was too slow and the tempo on the ball wasn’t good enough. But the reaction was good.

“We disappointed ourselves and we disappointed the crowd today, but the ones who stayed had a typical Old Trafford finish to the game so that was a big plus.”

United are now two points behind Arsenal in fifth following their draw with Burnley.

The Gunners edged past Cardiff in a 2-1 win at the Emirates on Tuesday night.

And United star Pogba has urged his team-mates to up their game.

“We have to learn from our mistakes and next time start the game differently,” he said.

“Like the manager said, you have to start strong and be aggressive because that’s what they were in the first half.

“We played like we were winning 1-0 or 2-0, that’s where we went wrong.

“The comeback was positive but the result was disappointing.

“The reaction was good, we didn’t lose, but we dropped two points we could have won.”

United are back in action on Sunday afternoon against Leicester in the Premier League.

Solskjaer will take charge of the first team with immediate effect and will remain in place while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new full-time manager. He will be joined by Mike Phelan as first-team coach, working alongside Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna.

“Manchester United is in my heart and it’s brilliant to be coming back in this role.

“I’m really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club,” said Solskjaer on the club website.

Man Utd news: Gary Neville slams ‘inconsistent’ Red Devils and makes Jose Mourinho claim https://briefnews.eu/man-utd-news-gary-neville-slams-inconsistent-red-devils-and-makes-jose-mourinho-claim/ https://briefnews.eu/man-utd-news-gary-neville-slams-inconsistent-red-devils-and-makes-jose-mourinho-claim/#respond Sun, 25 Nov 2018 22:00:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/man-utd-news-gary-neville-slams-inconsistent-red-devils-and-makes-jose-mourinho-claim/

That is the view of Manchester United legend Gary Neville.

United slumped to a 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace on Saturday and were booed off the pitch by their fans.

The result leaves United 14 points off leaders Man City and seven away from a place in the top four.

Before the Palace match, Mourinho had claimed United would be in the Champions League qualification positions by the New Year.

But for that to happen United would have to significantly improve on the form shown in the first 13 league games.

And speaking on the ‘Gary Neville podcast’, Neville was damning in his assessment of United’s problems.

“I didn’t go to Old Trafford but I spoke to people who did,” he said.

“There’s a lethargy, in terms of the fans going into the ground, watching the game, players on the pitch.

“I think Jose gave the right message before the game saying they will end up in the top four.

“I don’t think it would have been acceptable at the start of the season, and certainly the start of last season, to say the top four is achievable, because he will have wanted to challenge for the title with the money that has been spent. That’s where United need to be.

“But they’re not near that level at this moment in time, and it typifies really what they are at the moment, which is inconsistent.

“You can see them go away to Chelsea and nearly win, go away to Watford and Young Boys, and sometimes you can watch them at home against Wolves or Crystal Palace or Valencia, and they’re nowhere near.

“They’re inconsistent, not just in games, but from half to half within games.

“It’s not right obviously at this moment in time, the players are not performing anywhere near their level.

“You’d argue Jose at this moment in time will be scratching his head about which players to put out on the pitch.

“But he’s made changes before and it hasn’t really made any difference so it’s just about battling and fighting away at it, because it is a struggle.

“I think that’s the word to describe it.”

FanDuel strikes deal with NHL, Devils for sports bets, fantasy https://briefnews.eu/fanduel-strikes-deal-with-nhl-devils-for-sports-bets-fantasy/ https://briefnews.eu/fanduel-strikes-deal-with-nhl-devils-for-sports-bets-fantasy/#respond Mon, 05 Nov 2018 18:25:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fanduel-strikes-deal-with-nhl-devils-for-sports-bets-fantasy/

The wall that professional sports leagues in the United States fought so hard to maintain between themselves and legal sports betting continues to crumble.

The four major pro sports leagues fought New Jersey’s efforts to legalize sports betting in a case that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, and ended in May with all 50 states winning the right to offer sports betting.

Now, the leagues are realizing sports betting can be a profitable partner instead of an existential threat. It's off to a fast start in New Jersey, with over $ 336 million US in bets placed here since it began in mid-June.

The latest in a series of deals between sports leagues and gambling companies happened Monday morning when FanDuel, the daily fantasy sports company and recently minted bookmaker joined forces with the National Hockey League and its New Jersey Devils franchise for sports betting and fantasy sports play.

The company has become a sports betting partner of the league, as well as its official daily fantasy sports partner. FanDuel will have access to the NHL's real-time, verified game data feed, in a deal similar to one the league recently reached with MGM Resorts International.

CBC Sports' Anson Henry explains MGM/NHL deal:

CBC's Anson Henry gives some details on the new strategic sports gambling partnership the NHL has made. 1:47

In its deal with the Devils, FanDuel will get exposure during all regular season home games via an in-ice logo.

'Perfect next step'

"We are continuing to be progressive in our approach to the sports betting landscape, working directly with the industry and focusing on innovative opportunities for fan engagement," said NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.

"Joining forces with the National Hockey League was the perfect next step for us as both our sports betting and fantasy sports business continue to grow," said Matt King, CEO of FanDuel Group.

"The league's clear vision for these categories and this partnership marks an exciting time for both organizations."

FanDuel runs the sports book at the Meadowlands Racetrack in northern New Jersey, just outside New York City.

The company that owns the Devils, the Newark, N.J., arena in which they play, the Prudential Center, and the National Basketball Association's Philadelphia 76ers recently struck deals with bookmaker William Hill and Caesars Entertainment for sports lounges at the New Jersey arena, as well as marketing and promotional benefits.

Earlier this year, William Hill agreed to do promotional work and post odds at the home arenas of the Las Vegas Golden Knights.

Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho needs to get the Red Devils thinking this – Phil Jones https://briefnews.eu/man-utd-news-jose-mourinho-needs-to-get-the-red-devils-thinking-this-phil-jones/ https://briefnews.eu/man-utd-news-jose-mourinho-needs-to-get-the-red-devils-thinking-this-phil-jones/#respond Thu, 16 Aug 2018 06:53:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/man-utd-news-jose-mourinho-needs-to-get-the-red-devils-thinking-this-phil-jones/

That’s the view of United defender Phil Jones who missed out on the squad that beat Leicester on the opening weekend.

United ended last season in second place, though were 19 points behind champions Manchester City in the final standings.

Jose Mourinho’s side also made the FA Cup final but were beaten by Chelsea thanks to Eden Hazard’s penalty, which Jones gave away.

Many expect City to retain their title, with Liverpool expected to be their closest rivals.

And Jones isn’t ruling out Manchester United making a title push, but insists they need to stop worrying about their rivals.

“Yes, of course [we want to win the Premier League],” Jones said.

“It’s the most difficult to win out of the competitions in England. The level of the players and their fitness and ability is improving.

“I remember when I joined [United] in 2011; the Premier League has come on leaps and bounds since then – the pace of the Premier League and the games we’re playing in are so quick nowadays.

“You have to adjust and adapt to that, but it’s great to be a part of.

“The top six look very good and are going to be very competitive, so it’s going to be tough for us again this season – we know that – but I think we just need to focus on us a bit more and concentrate on how we’re going to approach games and let’s see where it takes us.”

Jones’ position at United seemed to be under threat during the summer with Mourinho reportedly searching for a new centre-back.

Toby Alderweireld, Diego Godin and Harry Maguire were both believed to be targets though the only signings that were made were those of Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant.

And former Premier League midfielder Jermaine Jenas believes United were right to reject Mourinho’s transfer wishlist.

He told Express Sport: “I agree with Ed Woodward and Manchester United and their thought process.

“If you look at the players Mourinho was trying to get, there’s no money in them. There’s success but in terms of a formula as a business, there is not much money left in Toby Alderweireld.

“Especially when he’s going to be worth £25million in six months time.

“In Diego Godin, he’s 32. Harry Maguire was the only youngster that he half pursued where there was money in and I’m guessing they couldn’t get him out [of Leicester].

“The warchest was there [but] it was a type of player they were going for and it didn’t really fit the bill for Woodward.”

Man Utd transfer news: Red Devils close in on highly-rated Barcelona teenager https://briefnews.eu/man-utd-transfer-news-red-devils-close-in-on-highly-rated-barcelona-teenager/ https://briefnews.eu/man-utd-transfer-news-red-devils-close-in-on-highly-rated-barcelona-teenager/#respond Sun, 08 Jul 2018 05:25:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/man-utd-transfer-news-red-devils-close-in-on-highly-rated-barcelona-teenager/

The 16-year-old has not agreed to a new contract with the Spanish giants and is weighing up his options according to Barcelona-based sports newspaper Sport.

Barca offered the youngster, who played for Cadete A last term, a spot in their Juvenil A side for next season.

That would see him skip the Juvenil B squad and move straight into contention for a spot in the prestigious UEFA Youth League.

Sport say that defensive midfielder Gonzalez has made added demands although an agreement appeared in place between the player and the Catalan club.

And the teenager has also had doubts over whether to continue at La Masia or more on having received interest from abroad.

Gonzalez reportedly came close to joining Manchester City two years ago when his father, Fran Gonzalez, was a coach at the Etihad Stadium only for his contract to be swiftly ended – bringing any move to a halt.

But Sport suggest that Gonzalez is of interest to Manchester United due to the presence of an ex-City scout.

David Harrison was the chief City scout when Gonzalez spent time with the Sky Blues before he left his post to take up a scouting role with arch rivals United instead.

And Gonzalez is said to be United’s first choice academy target with Atletico Madrid prospect Mario Soriano having penned a new deal rather than opt to move to Old Trafford.

Gonzalez could become the fifth young Barca player to leave the club’s youth set-up to go elsewhere this summer alone. Joel Lopez swapped the Spanish giants for Arsenal a few months ago.

Meanwhile Jose Mourinho is still looking to strengthen United’s first team as they look to make up ground on Premier League winners City in 2018-19.

A top-class centre-back is believed to be the Portuguese manager’s first priority with Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld understood to be top of his list, albeit currently with a £70million price tag on his head.

The Red Devils have signed midfielder Fred, right-back Diogo Dalot and back-up goalkeeper Lee Grant so far this summer.

Stephen King's It Honest Trailer

It: Chapter 2, the sequel to the hit Stephen King adaptation, is set to begin shooting this summer. We know very little about the sequel for now, other than the news that Jessica Chastain is in talks to star as the adult Bev Marsh. One thing we do know, though, is the film’s working title: Drive-Thru. As is the case with all working titles, this is just a placeholder used for production, and doesn’t really reflect on the movie itself. MovieWeb points out, however, that the title might be a callback to the first It while also referencing another sequel: Lethal Weapon 2. In the first It, we see a shot of a movie theater marquee advertising Lethal Weapon 2. In that film, Joe Pesci’s character goes off on a lengthy rant about fast food drive-thru service. Is there a connection here? Maybe! Or maybe it’s just a coincidence.

Rob Zombie‘s The Devil’s Rejects had a pretty definitive ending for its main characters, but we’re getting a third film in the franchise anyway. Word of Mr. Zombie’s Devil’s Rejects sequel arrived last year, and now, the filmmaker confirms filming has begun. As the above Instagram post confirms, the film is called Three From Hell. Just how this sequel plays out remains to be seen, but we’ll probably know soon enough.

It’s been over 10 years since Enchanted hit theaters, and there’s still no sign of Enchanted 2. There has been talk of a sequel to the Amy Adams film for years now, but the project has yet to get off the ground. Speaking with Collider, director Adam Shankman provided an update on the follow-up, which is titled Disenchanted:

“It’s been in development for a long time, but remember, in the midst of it, there was a big regime change, and a lot of stuff around the studio, figuring out what was important to Disney and how many movies they were going to make a year. There were some big movies that they were right to make, right out of the gate. Their track record is impenetrable. Making a movie over there is very exciting because they do not feel the need to put anything into production until they feel like they have it completely right.”

Shankman added: “As planned right now, there’s more singing and dancing than there was in the first one, and it’s all original music, with Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz coming back to do it.”

Twins sequel Triplets

Speaking of long-delayed sequels, Arnold Schwarzenegger has been talking about a potential sequel to the 1988 comedy Twins seemingly ever since the film hit theaters. The original starred Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito as a pair of fraternal twins separated at birth. The long-standing rumor was that the third film would be called Triplets and introduce Eddie Murphy as yet another long-lost brother to Schwarzenegger and DeVito’s character. Speaking with Deadline recently, Schwarzenegger confirmed that’s still the plan. The actor said that Eddie Murphy is officially attached to star and that the script is finished. We’ll believe it when we see it, Arnold.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will roar into theaters this summer, but the film isn’t quite finished yet. As the above tweet shows, composer Michael Giacchino has just begun to record the film’s score. The follow-up to the 2015 blockbuster will once again feature Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard dealing with dino mayhem, with director J. A. Bayona taking over for Colin Trevorrow. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom opens June 22, 2018.

Speaking of Jurassic World, there’s a new Jurassic video game in the works called Jurassic World Evolution. Like the film, it’s due out this summer. Also like the film, it’ll feature a familiar face: Jeff Goldblum will reprise his franchise role as Dr. Ian Malcolm. As Wikipedia states, “Jurassic World Evolution will allow the player to construct a Jurassic World dinosaur theme park with attractions and research facilities much like its predecessor, Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis.” So it’s sort of like Rollercoaster Tycoon, but with dinosaurs. ComingSoon reports Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm will guide player’s decisions through the game.

die hard

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that very few people are excited about the prospect of Die Hard 6. It’s happening anyway, though, so we should just get used to it. The film, which is said to be both a sequel and a prequel, has been in development for some time now. Now, The Tracking Board reports new writers have been brought on board to patch things up. Chad and Carey Hayes, who wrote The Conjuring, will now rewrite the script. Live Free or Die Hard director Len Wiseman will helm the movie, and someone will rouse Bruce Willis from a nap long enough to deliver a few lines and cash a paycheck.

sequel bits halloween

Writer Danny McBride has offered a new update on the highly anticipated Halloween sequel/reboot due out this year. It’s been previously reported that the new film will ignore virtually all of the sequels. Yet speaking with Flickering Myth recently, McBride revealed that while the film will serve as a direct sequel to the original Halloween, the other sequels will be referenced in some capacity:

“This picks up after the first one. The Halloween franchise has kind of become a little bit of like choose your own adventure, you know like there’s some many different versions, and the timeline is so mixed up, we just thought it would be easier to go back to the source and continue from from there. It was nicer than knowing you’re working onHalloween 11, it just seemed cooler, ‘we’re making Halloween 2‘. We do [reference the other movies]. For fans, we pay homage and respect to every Halloween that has been out there.”

Halloween will hit theaters October 19, 2018.

Man Utd 3 – Stoke 0: Red Devils cruise to win thanks to Valencia, Martial and Lukaku https://briefnews.eu/man-utd-3-stoke-0-red-devils-cruise-to-win-thanks-to-valencia-martial-and-lukaku/ https://briefnews.eu/man-utd-3-stoke-0-red-devils-cruise-to-win-thanks-to-valencia-martial-and-lukaku/#respond Tue, 16 Jan 2018 02:21:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/man-utd-3-stoke-0-red-devils-cruise-to-win-thanks-to-valencia-martial-and-lukaku/

Well-taken goals from Antonio Valencia, Anthony Martial and Romelu Lukaku gave them a comfortable win and cut Manchester City’s lead at the top of the table to 12 points.

And it also underlined the task facing new Stoke manager Paul Lambert whose new charges have shipped 10 goals on their two visits to Manchester this season as well as five at Tottenham and Chelsea.

United made sure it will not be easy for boss Jose Mourinho to fit Sanchez into his team – if he does sign the Chilean – with an upbeat performance, although Stoke gave them some anxious moments.

The freezing rain and icy temperatures must have been a shock to their systems after their warm weather training break in Dubai but a third victory without conceding a goal is an encouraging start to 2018 – with surely better to come, if and when when Sanchez arrives.

City looked uncatchable but all United can do is keep winning in the hope that their neighbours slip.

Lambert watched his new team from the VIP box, leaving caretaker Eddie Niedzwiecki in charge for the game.

It looked a wise choice. If he had taken a look at the Potters’ recent record at Old Trafford he would not have been too hopeful of seeing a victory.

They had lost 15 of their previous 17 trips – and their last win was back in 1976.

So it was no great surprise that United forged ahead after nine minutes. The bigger shock was that the goal came from the left foot of Valencia.

The United skipper normally uses his left peg just to stand on, but he applied power and bend to fire a shot from the edge of the area into the far corner of Jack Butland’s net after cutting inside Josh Tymon.

It was the perfect way to mark his return to the team after six games out with a hamstring injury. And it was an eye-catching finish to a clever build-up by United involving Luke Shaw, Juan Mata and Paul Pogba.

But Lambert would have been pleased by Stoke’s response.

Xherdan Shaqiri tested David De Gea with an acrobatic scissors kick and Stephen Ireland twice fired wide from good openings, especially the second one when he was set up by Shaqiri.

The best chance fell to Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting however.

He looked certain to score when Peter Crouch beat De Gea to head down Moritz Bauer’s cross but Choupo-Moting’s goalbound effort took a deflection off Chris Smalling just as Stoke prepared to celebrate an equaliser.

But Martial eased Manchester United’s anxieties by adding a superb second after 38 minutes.

Pogba was again the provider squaring the ball across the edge of the penalty area for his France compatriot to drive a first-time shot past Butland – and in the process become the third United player to reach double figures for goals this season, after Lukaku and Jesse Lingard.

Stoke must have wondered what had hit them because they had played well.

They finished the half on an upbeat note though with the lively Shaqiri forcing a fine save out of De Gea, who dived full length across his goal to tip round a low shot.

Martial was a constant menace with his pace and skill. And when he wriggled his way through, he looked certain to score his second for the night but Butland dived bravely at his feet.

That would have pleased Gareth Southgate who was in attendance to watch the Stoke keeper plus the United quartet of Shaw, Smalling, Jones and Lingard.

The England manager would have been impressed by all of them as he ponders his squad for the World Cup this summer.

United should have had a second when Lingard unselfishly set up Mata but the Spaniard curled his shot beyond the far post.

Lingard is on a hot streak for goals and probably should have a go himself.

And he showed his frustration by getting booked moments later for a foul on former United team-mate Darren Fletcher.

Mata, set up again by Lingard, wasted another chance when he fired over. Moments later he did flick the ball home, but was flagged offside – before Lukaku did indeed add United’s third goal 18 minutes from time with an assist by Martial.

MAN UTD (4-2-3-1): De Gea 7; Valencia 7, Jones 7, Smalling 7, Shaw 7; Matic 7, Pogba 8; Mata 7) McTominay 83), Lingard 7 (Fellaini), Martial 7 (Rashford 80); Lukaku 8. Booked: Lingard, Lukaku.

Goals: Valencia 10, Martial 37, Lukaku 73. NEXT UP: Burnley (a), Sat PL.

‘The Devil’s Backbone’: 13 Revelations About Guillermo del Toro’s Masterpiece From an Incredible New Book https://briefnews.eu/the-devils-backbone-13-revelations-about-guillermo-del-toros-masterpiece-from-an-incredible-new-book/ https://briefnews.eu/the-devils-backbone-13-revelations-about-guillermo-del-toros-masterpiece-from-an-incredible-new-book/#respond Sat, 16 Dec 2017 21:44:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-devils-backbone-13-revelations-about-guillermo-del-toros-masterpiece-from-an-incredible-new-book/ the devil's backbone book

Matt Zoller Seitz and Simon Abrams have created a stunning, essential new book devoted to Guillermo del Toro‘s 2001 gothic horror movie The Devil’s Backbone. Through in-depth interviews with del Toro and the cast and crew of the film, the Devil’s Backbone book details both the making of one of del Toro’s best films, and del Toro’s insights into filmmaking as a whole.

In 1997, Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro went Hollywood with the horror film Mimic. It didn’t go so well. del Toro had burst onto the scene with his haunting, unique, inventive twist on vampire mythology, Cronos. It made sense that Hollywood would come calling, but del Toro’s jump into the “mainstream” was fraught with production woes, meddling producers, and a finished product that left much to be desired. The filmmaker was down, but not out.

Del Toro would reclaim his artistic integrity (and peace of mind) with the Spanish language gothic melodrama The Devil’s Backbone. Released in 2001, it was a firm reminder that the budding genius many people had sensed watching Cronos was still alive and well, and that Mimic hadn’t sapped del Toro of his powers. The Devil’s Backbone would be the first of two films del Toro would set against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War, the second being Pan’s Labyrinth. It might be easy for some to think of Backbone as a test-run for Labyrinth, but that would be doing a disservice to the former. Instead, the film’s compliment each other, like mirror images. But Devil’s Backbone is still very much its own unique beast.

On its surface, The Devil’s Backbone is a ghost story – the tale of a lonely boy who comes to an orphanage and finds a ghost. But there’s so much more going on here. Characters are never one-dimensional in a del Toro film – there are no real heroes or villains. Instead, there are just people, full of conflicts, and neurosis, and hopes, and dreams, and hatreds. These elements are all at play in the cast of characters that populate The Devil’s Backbone, and through them, del Toro weaves a haunting, hypnotic, heartbreaking tale.

In Matt Zoller Seitz and Simon Abrams’ wonderful new book, del Toro’s comeback film is explored from every angle – pre-production, production, and beyond. The film’s very soul is laid bare through a book-length interview with del Toro himself, interspersed with interviews from various members of the cast and crew. It is an all-encompassing look at a remarkable film, but it’s more than that. This book is like an entire journey through film school condensed into 160 pages. Del Toro doesn’t just talk about Backbone – he talks about the medium of film as a whole, and shares his thoughts on other filmmakers.

Anyone who has listened to one of del Toro’s Blu-ray commentary tracks knows how well-versed in the language of film he is, and here in the pages of The Devil’s Backbone is even more of his staggering knowledge and insight. It’s an utter treat, not just for del Toro fans but for film fans in general. I’ve combed through the pages of The Devil’s Backbone and assembled some wonderful revelations for you here. But these tidbits only scratch the surface. For the full experience, you really must get your hands on the book.

The Devil's Backbone book cover

An Antidote

Mimic should’ve signaled Guillermo del Toro’s big arrival in Hollywood. Instead, the film’s troubled production – which included meddling from producer Bob Weinstein at Miramax – and tepid reception was an overall crushing experience for the filmmaker.

“From the get-go, it was a bad experience,” del Toro says in The Devil’s Backbone book. “I was in post-production on it for two years, and coming out of that I honestly thought, Maybe I’m not made for this, because [Miramax cofounder] Bob Weinstein was very tough to survive.”

The filmmaker goes on to say that, at the time, the Weinsteins were considered “golden” in the industry, and that most people assumed the faults in Mimic must have sprung from del Toro as a filmmaker rather than Weinstein interference. “Eventually, over the years, more information emerged,” del toro says. “But at the time people said, ‘God knows what happened on Mimic.’”

After Mimic, del Toro found American film work hard to come by. He had pitched a proposal for what would become The Devil’s Backbone to the Mexican Institute of Film, but they rejected the idea because they thought it was “too big” of a movie. The eventual solution to del Toro’s problems arrived courtesy of filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar.

Almodóvar, the director of Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, All About My Mother, Talk to Her and many more, had met del Toro and expressed his fondness for del Toro’s first film. According to del Toro, Almodóvar said, “I liked your movie Cronos very much, and if you ever come to Spain my brother and I would like to produce a movie for you.” In 1997, del Toro “took a chance and wrote to Pedro and said, ‘Remember that conversation we had?’”

Almodóvar produced Devil’s Backbone, but gave del Toro completely control over the film, an experience del Toro says was “like an antidote to Mimic, which was five producers around me at all times.” Almodóvar also gave del Toro final cut – another condition that was denied to him on Mimic.

Compromise as an Art Form

The stories about the production of The Devil’s Backbone are what primarily make up Matt Zoller Seitz and Simon Abrams’ book, but there are frequent side-steps into the process of filmmaking as a whole. In these moments, del Toro’s knowledge of film and filmmaking shine brightest.

One key passage involves del Toro discussing the very nature of being a director, and how the job itself is perceived by film fans. “Since Erich von Stroheim or Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton or D.W. Griffith, we’ve enthroned the idea of the autocrat: the director who controls everything,” del Toro says before pointing out that it’s simply not true. “The reality is that every director knows that it’s about saying, ‘Oh, this accident happened, and it’s better.’”

The filmmaker sums it up succinctly: “Directing is compromise as an art form.”

To further illustrate the point, del Toro turns to one of the most historically obsessive filmmakers in the history of the medium: Stanley Kubrick. Surely an auteur such as Kubrick was in control of everything, right? Not exactly. Del Toro talks about befriending Tom Cruise (the filmmaker wanted Cruise to star in his now-aborted At The Mountains of Madness adaptation) and proceeding to pick the actor’s brain about working with Kubrick on Eyes Wide Shut: “I asked him, ‘Do you think [Kubrick] controlled everything? Or was he able to create opportunities for accidents?’ And [Cruise] said, ‘Absolutely, he left room for accidents. In fact, sometimes you had the feeling that he was waiting for that accident to present itself so he could recognize it.’”

Prep Work

Del Toro eloquently recalls almost every tiny detail about the production of The Devil’s Backbone, and that includes all the pre-production work. When it comes to designing a film, the filmmaker says he usually takes about six months of prep work:

“I take three months alone with a conceptual illustrator, and I figure out everything before we are joined by the production designer and wardrobe designer. I just do sketches with them. And then for three to five months more, I work with the whole team.”

Del Toro’s prep work on The Devil’s Backbone was slightly shorter than other films, because he had committed to making Blade II.

Chekhov’s Bomb

One of the most iconic pieces of imagery from The Devil’s Backbone is an unexploded bomb, sticking out of the ground in the courtyard of the orphanage. The bomb is a constant metaphorical reminder of the Spanish Civil War raging beyond the orphanage’s walls: “The bomb is omnipresent in the middle of the courtyard much like the war,” del Toro says. “It just says, ‘The war is here….’” The filmmaker goes on to say that he “wanted [the bomb] to be almost a mother figure to the kids. They planted flowers around it and put ribbons on it, like it’s a fertility goddess, a totemic figure. But I wanted it to look over them the whole time.”

Del Toro’s thoughtfulness about the bomb, which is omnipresent but not exactly a key element to the overall story, further illustrates just how much thought he pours into the construction of his films. The bomb is always there, and even when it’s not on screen, the audience is subliminally thinking about it. How could they not?

“If you have a bomb in your backyard, unexploded…basically it becomes the north of your entire geography,” del Toro says. “Whether you sleep close to or far from the bomb, or you cross the bomb to go to the well, it’s always there at the center…But even if you live with a bomb, it’s still a bomb. That’s the essence of a civil war. You live with a conflict and it can become matter-of-fact, everyday, but you’re still living with this bomb at home.”
