Epidemiologist Neil Ferguson announced he was suffering from Coronavirus symptoms today, hours after standing within close proximity of Boris Johnson. Is the Prime Minister and his pregnant partner Carrie Symonds at risk? ITV resident doctor, Doctor Hilary Jones gave his advice on the possibility. Coronavirus is sweeping the nation and on Monday, Johnson outlined the latest governmental advice about how the public should be protecting themselves and what measures they should be taking to decrease the chance of the virus spreading. Yesterday, Johnson was joined by Chancellor Rishi Sunak who unveiled a significant lifeline for the economy and business. During both appearances this week, Ferguson was on hand to offer his expert advice, but after announcing via his official Twitter account he is suffering from covid-19 symptoms, is the Prime Minister at risk? He told his followers: “Sigh. Developed a slight dry but persistent cough yesterday and self isolated even though I felt fine. “Then developed high fever at 4am today. There is a lot of COVID-19 in Westminster.” READ MORE: Brexit LIVE: Boris REJECTS transition period delay due to coronavirus Having been in close proximity to Johnson, questions have been raised over the Conservative Party Leader’s own health and that of his girlfriend Carrie Symonds who is pregnant with their first child. During Good Morning Britain, host Piers Morgan asked ITV’s resident doctor, Dr. Hilary Jones what advice he would give the leader of this country to ensure his and Symonds’ health remains safe. “The guy in charge of the modelling appears to have the virus,” Morgan stated. “He was on Monday in Number Ten with the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister has a pregnant girlfriend.” “It depends how close the contact was,” Dr. Jones explained. “She is in the vulnerable group and should be self-isolating, or socially distancing. The advice depends on how close they were.” Covid-19 is a new illness that can affect your lungs and airways. It’s caused by a virus called coronavirus. Johnson and his advisors said someone must stay at home if they have a high temperature – you feel hot to touch on your chest or back, and or a new, continuous cough. You must not go a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital, nor contact 111 to tell them you’re staying at home. Testing for coronavirus is also not needed if you’re staying at home. If you live alone and have symptoms, you must stay at home for seven days. if you live with other people and you or anyone in your household have symptoms, you and everyone in the household must stay at home for 14 days from the day the first person got symptoms. If you live with someone who is 70 or over, has a long-term condition, is pregnant or has a weakened immune system, try to find somewhere else for them to stay for 14 days. If you have to stay at home together, try to keep away from each other as much as possible. The advice is particularly important for people in the ‘high-risk’ category; who are 70 or over, have a long-term condition, are pregnant or have a weakened immune system. Therefore, since Symonds falls into the ‘high-risk’ category, she should be practising self-isolation and social distancing. A further 14 people have died after being diagnosed with coronavirus in England, bringing the UK’s total to 71. Good Morning Britain airs weekday morning at 6am on ITV. The Financial Times has a woman problem, or so it thinks. In the push for gender equality, and to reach out to female readers, boffins at the paper have developed a bot that warns journalists when they’re quoting too many men. The paper, which mostly covers the stuffy, male-dominated worlds of finance and industry, found that only 21 percent of the sources quoted in its articles were women. To combat this, the FT team then developed a bot that trawls articles, scanning pronouns and first names to warn section editors if they aren’t including enough women in their stories, according to a report in the Guardian. Staff at the paper have been warned that in the future, textual analysis will be used to scan their articles as they type, on the lookout for over-representation of male voices. Presumably, a stern-voiced AI will wag a virtual finger at them if they neglect to include women. Journalists greeted the woke, feminist robot with glee. Love to see the @FT taking tangible steps to increase representation in their pages, after finding that only 21% of people quoted in the FT identified as women. https://t.co/KEy2yyvoV4 — Kathleen McLaughlin (@kemc) November 15, 2018 Excellent idea, and something all of us in the media ought always to have in mind: — Claire Phipps (@Claire_Phipps) November 14, 2018 The bot is just one of the Financial Times’ plans to reach out to female readers. The paper is also including more pictures of women, as it claims “women are more likely than men to click through on a picture of a woman.” More female opinion writers have been hired, and the organization says it is also hiring more writers from different ethnicities and geographic locations, all in an effort to broaden its appeal. The move has been met with some criticism. “If I quote Aristotle or Plato too much, without referring to women authors too, I’m going to get a warning?,” one philosophy blogger wrote. Oh dear! If I quote Aristotle or Plato too much, without referring to women authors too, I'm going to get a warning? My lecture about Ross & Kant & deontological ethics breaks the FT rule but their rule isn't CI!https://t.co/BdfXOQYZHT — Jennifer Torgerson (@JennTorgerson) November 15, 2018 Others ridiculed the idea of using a robot to enforce political correctness. I know this is probably a good thing, but I find the search for tech solutions to the problem of ‘not really seeing women as experts or indeed people’ a little bit tedious. https://t.co/7CCksCCmJM — Dr Charlotte Lydia Riley (@lottelydia) November 14, 2018 While quoting female experts should be an easy task for reporters covering healthcare, education, and immigration; finding women to comment on, for example, an oil and gas conference in Kyrgyzstan might be a little more difficult. The FT has not said how it would train the bot to study coverage of male-dominated events like these. The FT is not the first major newspaper to try and address the gender imbalance in its quotations. The Atlantic’s Ed Yong penned a long op-ed this year about his own efforts to track down more female sources in his science stories. “I don’t buy that journalism should act simply as society’s mirror,” he wrote. “It also pushes us toward a world that could be.” In striving for that feminist utopia, women in several fields have have compiled lists of female experts for journalists to contact, and hundreds of men have signed a petition vowing not to appear on all-male panels at conferences. It’s fair to say that the Windows 10 October 2018 Update has not been Microsoft’s most successful update. Reports of data loss quickly emerged, forcing Microsoft to suspend distribution of the update. It has since been fixed and is currently undergoing renewed testing pending a re-release.
This isn’t the first Windows feature update that’s had problems—we’ve seen things like significant hardware incompatibilities in previous updates—but it’s certainly the worst. While most of us know the theory of having backups, the reality is that lots of data, especially on home PCs, has no real backup, and deleting that data is thus disastrous.
Microsoft’s ambition with Windows 10 was to radically shake up how it develops Windows 10. The company wanted to better respond to customer and market needs, and to put improved new features into customers’ hands sooner. Core to this was the notion that Windows 10 is the “last” version of Windows—all new development work will be an update to Windows 10, delivered through feature updates several times a year. This new development model was branded “Windows as a Service.” And after some initial fumbling, Microsoft settled on a cadence of two feature updates a year; one in April, one in October.

Enlarge / T cells latch on to a cancer cell before killing it. (credit: NIH)
We’ve made some impressive advances toward inducing the immune system to attack cancers. One of these techniques, using CAR-T cells, is amazing. CAR-T cells are made by inserting receptors that recognize cancerous cells into a leukemia patient’s own T cells. This induces those T cells to recognize the patient’s tumor as the threat that it is and destroy it.
But, that T cells mount such an effective immune response is their therapeutic weakness as well as their strength. Engineered immune cells like these can completely disrupt normal immune function, causing unpleasant conditions with names like macrophage activating syndrome, cytokine storms, and even neurotoxicity, all of which can be life-threatening. So a group of Swiss researchers has decided to engineer a killing system into non-immune cells to avoid all these side effects.
T cells target their tumor-killing immune response through cell-to-cell contact. This is a distinctive feature of how the T cell receptor works. It hangs out on the T cell’s surface membrane, with some parts on the outside and some parts on the inside. When its external part contacts a particular feature on the surface of a cell, its intracellular part sends a signal through a cascade of molecules that eventually results in collection genes getting expressed. These genes include the ones needed to kill the target cell.

Cranial collisions are haunting the sports world more and more. A recent survey of 111 former football player’s brains found that 110 showed signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative disease caused by repeated blows like those delivered in the high-contact sport. Companies have been scrambling to provide ways to better track injuries during games, which is a complex undertaking. Researchers at BYU have introduced a non-interfering solution: A nanofoam cushioning that measures impacts in real-time.
The foam can be inserted in helmets and padding to track collisions via electrical signals and wirelessly send the data to tablets and devices held by coaching staff on the sidelines. It’s designed to operate quickly, too, informing coaches how hard a player has been hit — and whether they’re at risk of a concussion and should be pulled off the field.
Previous prototype devices simply indicate when players are hit, but the BYU researchers’ nanofoam tracks the severity of impact: When compressed, nickel nanoparticles rub against the foam to generate a static charge, which is gathered by a conductive electrode and measured by a microcomputer before being sent off wirelessly. A bigger hit generates a higher static charge, which is measured to account for acceleration, energy and velocity. The current setup determines how hard the wearer has been hit with 90 percent accuracy, according to research published by the BYU team’s lead Jake Merrell in the journal Annals of Biomedical Engineering.
As with most prototype devices, it’s too early to tell whether programs or leagues in any sport will pick up Merrell’s team’s invention. But EurekAlert noted that a company that produces taekwondo vests had started using the foam in its products to score fights and train athletes.

]]>President Donald Trump welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to his Florida home for a two-day summit, where the leaders will have a series of discussions on North Korea, trade policies and more.
In their first face-to-face meeting, Xi and Trump met at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s estate in Palm Beach, on Thursday. Trump had told reporters on Air Force One that he would be focusing their talks on North Korea and trade.

Trump repeated that he would be willing to act unilaterally to rein in North Korea, but said that he thinks “China will want to be stepping up” to help the US, according to the White House.
A week ahead of the meeting, Trump tweeted that the subject of trade with China would make for a “very difficult” meeting because of the “massive trade deficits.”
The meeting next week with China will be a very difficult one in that we can no longer have massive trade deficits…
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 30, 2017
After arriving at the resort, the leaders were joined by their wives at a long table for dinner, where Trump joked with reporters about their progress, saying: “We’ve had a long discussion already, and so far I have gotten nothing, absolutely nothing.”
“We have developed a friendship,” Trump added. “I think long term we are going to have a very, very great relationship and I look very much forward to it.”
Trump also brought many of his top advisers to the meeting, including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who spoke with reporters at Palm Beach International Airport after greeting Xi. Tillerson said that Trump would be having “very frank discussions” with Xi over North Korea and trade.
“China can be part of a new strategy to end North Korea’s reckless behavior and ensure security, stability and economic prosperity in Northeast Asia,” Tillerson said, according to the Washington Post.
Xi was scheduled to say in Florida until Friday afternoon, with the Chinese delegation staying at a nearby hotel instead of the resort.

A solar cell with 26.3 percent efficiency. (credit: Photovoltaic & Thin Film Research Laboratories (Kaneka corporation))
Solar panels are cheaper than ever these days, but installation costs can still be considerable for homeowners. More efficient solar panels can recapture the cost of their installation more quickly, so making panels that are better at converting sunlight into electricity is a key focus of solar research and development.
The silicon-based cells that make up a solar panel have a theoretical efficiency limit of 29 percent, but so far that number has proven elusive. Practical efficiency rates in the low-20-percent range have been considered very good for commercial solar panels. But researchers with Japanese chemical manufacturer Kaneka Corporation have built a solar cell with a photo conversion rate of 26.3 percent, breaking the previous record of 25.6 percent. Although it’s just a 2.7 percent increase in efficiency, improvements in commercially viable solar cell technology are increasingly hard-won.
Not only that, but the researchers noted in their paper that after they submitted their article to Nature Energy, they were able to further optimize their solar cell to achieve 26.6 percent efficiency. That result has been recognized by the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL).
