Dementia is the name given a group of symptoms linked to an ongoing decline in brain function.

The most common types of dementia in the UK include Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia.

Alzheimer’s disease is caused by an abnormal build-up of proteins in or around brain cells, while vascular dementia is caused by a reduced blood flow to the brain.

The risk factors for each dementia varies. But who is more likely to develop dementia, men or women?

Women are more likely to have Alzheimer’s disease than men, according to the Alzheimer’s Society.

There’s a higher risk in women, even after discounting their longer life expectancy.

The exact reason why women are more at risk of the dementia isn’t entirely understood, but it’s believed to be related to their genetic makeup.

But, men are more likely to develop vascular dementia, the charity warned.

“Some risk factors for dementia can’t be changed,” it said. “The most important are a person’s age, genes, sex and ethnic origin.

“Women are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than men [even allowing for the fact that women on average live longer].

“Men are at slightly higher risk of vascular dementia. For most other forms of dementia, women and men have much the same risk.”

While gender plays a role in the risk of developing some brain conditions, age is the strongest risk factor.

When someone reaches the age of 65, their risk of developing Alzheimer’s or vascular dementia doubles every five years.

About one in every 14 people over 65 are affected by dementia, and one in six in people over 80 years old.

South Asian individuals seem to develop dementia more often than white Europeans, the charity revealed.

Different types of dementia can affect people differently, and symptoms will vary among individuals, said the NHS.

Common early warning signs of dementia include memory loss, difficulty concentrating, and finding it difficult to carry out familiar, everyday tasks.

The symptoms tend to get worse over time, and may lead to mobility problems, communication difficulty, and incontinence.

Diagnosing dementia early is crucial, as it gives patients access to treatments that could improve symptoms.

Speak to a doctor if you’ve been having dementia signs that are have been affecting your daily life for longer than six months.

The flying taxis from Airbus and Uber may have some fresh competition, albeit not quite in the way they might have expected. Rolls-Royce has unveiled an EVTOL (Electric Vertical Take Off and Landing) concept that could carry four to five passengers to virtually any large-enough landing spot thanks to wings that can rotate 90 degrees. It wouldn’t be purely electric, despite the name (gas turbines would produce the 500kW of power needed for six propellers), but it would be quiet while ferrying people up to 500 miles at a peak speed of 250MPH. Its wing propellers would fold away once at cruise height to avoid irking either passengers or people below.

The hybrid powerplant approach may not be the most environmentally friendly, but Rolls is pitching it as a time advantage. While there would be a battery for energy storage, you would only need to fuel the turbine to get back into the air. That’s potentially important for commuter services that may need turnaround times measured in minutes rather than hours.

The design is focused on “personal air mobility” for congested cities and could be used for both flying taxis as well as private transportation for the well-off (this is Rolls-Royce, after all). However, it’s flexible enough that the company sees it as useful for cargo hauling and military purposes.

There’s nothing to show beyond 3D renders at this point, and Rolls-Royce hasn’t listed any customers. However, you might not have to wait too long to see it in action. The firm stressed that the EVTOL concept is based on technology that either already exists or is in mid-development, giving it a chance to fly sometime in the early 2020s. That is, of course, dependent on whether or not partners are sold on the idea. Airbus’ smaller-scale approach may be more effective for dense urban areas, and Uber has aerospace heavyweights like Bell and Embraer on its side. Rolls may need to deliver a strong sales pitch if it’s going to attract partners and put its airborne taxi into service.

Another day, another trailer for one of the 700-plus movies and TV shows coming to Netflix this year. Except this selection from the Toronto International Film Festival looks better than the usual Netflix original movie.

Kodachrome premiered at TIFF last year to mostly warm reactions, and now the road trip dramedy starring Jason Sudeikis, Ed Harris and Elizabeth Olsen has a full trailer to entice you to watch this one from the comfort of your couch.

As the trailer briefly explains, the title comes from a certain brand of color film that has been phased out for years now. The Kodachrome film had become so rare that there was only one photo lab left in the entire United States that could process it. The road trip is driven by one famous photographer’s (Ed Harris) desire to develop his last few rolls of film before he dies. But the trip might also serve as a way for him to develop his estranged relationship with his son (Jason Sudeikis).

After playing at TIFF, the movie was mostly praised despite feeling like familiar film festival fare. Andrew Barker at Variety called the film “an entirely watchable if entirely by-the-numbers throwback to the sweet-and-sour Sundance-style indie films of yore.” Meanwhile, Kate Erbland at IndieWire gave one of the stars a lot of credit for making the movie work, “It’s Sudeikis, once again pushing away from his comedic roots into darker spaces, who carries the film. At first blush, his fast-talking smooth operator who is forced to find his own humanity seems like a standard Sudeikis role, but Kodachrome and Sudeikis reach for more.”

The film is directed Mark Raso (Copenhagen) and written by Jonathan Tropper (Banshee), inspired by a New York Times article written by A.G. Sulzberger. Here’s the official synopsis for Kodachrome from the TIFF program guide:

Matt Ryder (Sudeikis) is only in his thirties, but technology is already wreaking havoc on his life. An A&R man for a boutique record label, Matt’s feeling increasingly irrelevant as the music business grows more shallow and myopic. The digital age also feels like the end of an era for Matt’s father, Ben (Harris), a famous photographer who shoots exclusively on celluloid. Following a grim diagnosis for Ben and after years of estrangement, Matt is approached by his father’s assistant, Zooey (Olsen), to accompany them on a personalized pilgrimage. Ben wants to take one last trip to Parsons, Kansas, so he can develop some rolls of film before the world’s only remaining Kodachrome lab closes its doors. Matt reluctantly agrees, but harbours no illusions that he and the old man will ever resolve their grievances.
