Yvonne Strahovski escapes one kind of hell only to land in another, in Netflix’s trailer for the Australian limited series Stateless.

Inspired by a true story and premiering Stateside on Netflix on Wednesday, July 8, the six-part series promises “a powerful and timely tale” of four strangers whose lives collide at an immigration detention center in the middle of the Australian desert.

There’s Sofie (played by The Handmaid’s Tale‘s Strahovski), an airline hostess who is on the run from a dangerous cult (led by The Affair‘s Dominic West and series co-creator Cate Blanchett); Ameer (The Commons‘ Fayssal Bazzi), an Afghan refugee who with his family is attempting to flee persecution; Cam (Suicide Squad’s Jai Courtney), a young father struggling with his role as a detention center guard; and Clare (Offspring’s Asher Keddie), a bureaucrat running out of time to contain a national scandal.

“Stateless has been a labour of love for many years and we could not be more thrilled that it will reach an international audience via Netflix,” Blanchett and fellow co-creators Tony Ayres and Elise McCredie said in a statement. “The issues addressed in the series have universal resonance but have been cloaked in silence and muddied by fear and misinformation. Our hope is that Stateless will generate a global conversation around our systems of border protection and how our humanity has been affected by them.”

Stateless previously premiered on Australia’s ABC in March.

  • A scathing watchdog report accused an immigration detention facility in California of providing substandard medical and dental care.
  • One of the two dentists overseeing the 1,700 detained immigrants said he doesn’t provide cleanings or fillings because he doesn’t have time.
  • The dentist suggested that immigrants who can’t afford floss from the commissary can prevent cavities by flossing with strings from their socks.

A California detention center housing nearly 1,700 immigrants provides such substandard medical care that inspectors called it a “significant threat” to immigrants’ health and well-being, a recently released Homeland Security watchdog report said.

Particularly troubling to the inspectors who in May visited the Adelanto facility, located about 85 miles northeast of Los Angeles, was the lack of dental care immigrants received, according to the inspector general’s report.

The court said that the activist had played a key part in launching a protest rally on Tverskaya Street on September 9 – the latest nationwide single elections day. Russian law forbids any street events on such days, and police stopped the march before it started, but some of the protesters managed to cause damage to state property – scratching the paint on one of the police cars.

The commencement date for the sentence was set back to when Navalny’s previous detention ended on Monday morning, when he was arrested almost immediately after finishing a 30-day civil sentence for repeated violations of laws concerning rallies.

Navalny was in custody on September 9, but the court decided that the activist had organized protests from prison, by giving instructions to his allies and posting messages on his blog, as well as on Twitter and through videos on YouTube.

During the court sitting, Navalny repeatedly appealed for the judge to be replaced, but these requests were denied. He also refused to testify in the case and pleaded not guilty, but this had no effect on the sentence. It is expected that Navalny’s defense will appeal the ruling.

The activist also told the judge in court that he expected a criminal case to be initiated against him while he is serving the latest sentence. The claim was based on Russian laws providing that anyone who receives three administrative sentences of this type within a six-month period can face criminal charges if the alleged crimes involved damage to property or human health.

Navalny received civil sentences in mid-May and in late August this year, making the Monday sentence his third in just four months, and the new sentence did involve damage to property.

The Criminal Code provides for punishment of up to five years in prison for repeated violation of the law on rallies.

In February last year, the Russian Constitutional Court confirmed that repeated violations of street-protest rules can carry criminal responsibility, but warned against a formal approach to cases. It emphasized that the existence of several court verdicts ordering civil punishment for the same defendant should be the main criteria for applying the rule. They also noted that the prosecution must prove the suspects’ criminal intention in every civil case.

Bochkarev travelled to Norway to take part in an international seminar held in the Norwegian parliament on September 20-21. The man, who works in the Central Office of the Russian Senate, was invited to the event by the European Center for Parliamentary Research and Documentation, the ministry’s statement says, adding that the event was public and was attended by “parliamentary representatives from a dozen countries.”

“It is incomprehensible why the presence of a Russian representative at the seminar has led to such provocation,” the ministry said, adding that a “wave of spy hysteria” that has recently engulfed the West had taken a particularly “despicable form” in Norway. It also said that Oslo’s move would not be “left unanswered.”

Norway then rushed to explain that the arrest of the Russian man accused of “gathering some data” has nothing to do with politics and is treated as a criminal case. “This is not a political issue,” Prime Minister Erna Solberg told the Norwegian NTB news agency.

Several western countries have, indeed, gone on an apparent spy hunt, with mainstream media at times dominated by headlines on alleged “Russian agents.” Swiss and Dutch newspapers reported mid-September that the two countries carried out a joint operation with the UK, resulting in the Netherlands expelling two suspected Russian spies in March. This was later confirmed by Switzerland’s intelligence agency, which claimed it had foiled “a Russian plot,” targeting a Swiss laboratory which tests nerve agents such as Novichok.

The details provided by the western media and officials were so scant that it prompted the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to call on them to “present some facts” first, so that Moscow could respond to these allegations.

Meanwhile, the British authorities tirelessly accuse Moscow of being behind the poisoning of the former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter. Most recently, London presented the CCTV footage of two men it claimed were agents of the Russian military intelligence, the GRU, and accused the two of poisoning the Skripals.

The men, identified as Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, gave an interview to RT’s editor-in-chief, Margarita Simonyan, where they said they claimed to be businessmen and tourists that got wrongly accused by the UK. Their explanation, however, appeared to be not convincing enough for London, which immediately rushed to denounce it as a blow to the “public’s intelligence.”

Meanwhile, across the pond, the US authorities are still looking for proof of Russia’s alleged interference in the US 2016 elections but have failed to find any so far. As part of the Russiagate scandal sweeping the US, a Russian gun rights activist, Maria Butina, got arrested. Butina, who has been accused of being an unregistered Russian lobbyist and basically a Russian agent, has been kept in prison for more than two months without any solid evidence of her guilt being presented.

  • Isabella Messer was arrested at Hopkinsville High School in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, on August 23. 
  • It came after officials said she violated the dress code twice and had an altercation with a school resource officer. 
  • In the first dress code violation incident, Isabella was stopped by her principal for wearing a shirt that exposed her shoulders.
  • On August 23, Isabella wore a T-Shirt to school with the message, “Do my shoulders turn you on?” printed across the front.  The back of the shirt read: “If so, return to the 1920’s.”
  • A police report said Isabella kicked the school resource officer on his right shin when he tried to take her phone following her arrest. 

A 15-year-old girl in Kentucky was arrested and taken to a juvenile detention center for six days after wearing a T-shirt to class that protested her high school’s dress code, the teen’s mother told INSIDER.

The arrest on August 23 came after officials say Isabella Messer had an altercation with a school resource officer at Hopkinsville High School following what the school saw as two dress code violations, according to the Lexington Herald Leader.

  • The United Nations has called on China to end the detention of up to one million Uighurs in the far western Xinjiang province.

The United Nations has called on China to end the detention of what it has cited as “tens of thousands to upwards of a million Uighurs” in the far western Xinjiang province.

The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on Thursday urged China to “halt the practice of detaining individuals who have not been lawfully charged, tried, and convicted for a criminal offense in any extra-legal detention center.”

The embassy said that prison administration has now finally allowed the jailed activist to make phone calls, but could not put her in touch with her parents, citing unspecified “technical issues.”

Maria, who is generally in “good health,” has requested the help of a dentist, the embassy said, but the requests are being ignored.

The young woman “resiliently withstands all hardships and tries to adapt to them,” the embassy said, passing on a message of gratitude from Butina to her friends and to those who believe her innocent. Butina “stands strongly” to prove her innocence in the US court.

In the wake of Butina’s arrest, the Russian Foreign Ministry launched a campaign under the hashtag #FreeMariaButina in support of the activist. The campaign was immediately hijacked by the anti-Russian pro-establishment crowd, that flooded it with sexist and abusive comments.

The US media has also picked on Butina’s case, portraying her as a spy, although she has not been charged with espionage, and focusing mainly on salacious allegations against her. Butina’s attorney Robert Driscoll told RT that juicy media tales that Butina had traded sex for influence lack any proof and come off as sexist.

“It makes [her case] more like a spy novel, and frankly easier for the public to digest. So editors and producers like those kinds of allegations,” Driscoll said. He also refuted claims that Butina was preparing to flee to Russia at the time of her arrest, arguing that the government was forced to back down on the allegation after he offered the court evidence suggesting Butina planned to stay in the US and live there with her boyfriend.

Butina voluntarily testified before the US Senate Intelligence Committee back in April, explaining “basically all the types of the allegations,” that have been recycled and brought forward again, according to Driscoll. On Wednesday, the Senate approved the release of the eight-hour-long testimony to the court and to Butina’s defense. It won’t be made public, however.

Alison Jimena Valencia Madrid and her mother, Cindy Madrid, were separated after US authorities detained them June 13 for illegally entering the United States near Harlingen, Texas.
