The French Navy’s newest frigate, FS Auvergne, fired rockets around 8pm GMT Monday, the Russian military said. “Airspace control has recorded rocket launches from the French frigate Auvergne,” the ministry’s statement read. The Auvergne is deployed in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Syria.

The launch was detected around the same time as air traffic controllers at the Khmeimim Air Base “lost contact” with a military Il-20 aircraft during an attack of Israeli F-16 fighters on Latakia. Fourteen people were on board the plane at the time of the disappearance. A search and rescue mission is underway.

The IDF has refused to comment on the report. Despite the fact that Israel rarely acknowledges striking specific targets inside Syria, earlier this month the IDF admitted to hitting at least 202 “Iranian targets” in the country.

As tensions over Idlib rise, Turkey and Russia on Monday agreed to establish a “demilitarized zone” between militants and government troops as part of an effort to clear the remaining jihadists from Syria.

AI detects movement through walls using wireless signals https://briefnews.eu/ai-detects-movement-through-walls-using-wireless-signals/ https://briefnews.eu/ai-detects-movement-through-walls-using-wireless-signals/#respond Wed, 13 Jun 2018 05:19:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ai-detects-movement-through-walls-using-wireless-signals/

You don’t need exotic radar, infrared or elaborate mesh networks to spot people through walls — all you need are some easily detectable wireless signals and a dash of AI. Researchers at MIT CSAIL have developed a system (RF-Pose) that uses a neural network to teach RF-equipped devices to sense people’s movement and postures behind obstacles. The team trained their AI to recognize human motion in RF by showing it examples of both on-camera movement and signals reflected from people’s bodies, helping it understand how the reflections correlate to a given posture. From there, the AI could use wireless alone to estimate someone’s movements and represent them using stick figures.

The scientists mainly see their invention as useful for health care, where it could be used to track the development of diseases like multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s. It could also help some elderly people stay in their own homes by sending alerts if they fall or otherwise show signs of trouble. And since the technology is 83 percent reliable for identifying people in large groups (as many as 100 people), it could be helpful for search-and-rescue operations where it’s important to know who you’re looking for. Refinements could lead to 3D images that reveal even slight movements, such as a shaking hand.

It’s hard to escape the potential privacy concerns. This could theoretically be used to spy on nearby buildings, or follow peopl to their destination even if they duck around a corner. However, CSAIL has a privacy solution in mind: it’s developing a “consent mechanism” that would require performing specific movements before tracking kicks in. If that safeguard persisted in real-world applications, you wouldn’t have to worry about losing your privacy for the sake of convenience.

Blood test detects heart attack in minutes https://briefnews.eu/blood-test-detects-heart-attack-in-minutes/ https://briefnews.eu/blood-test-detects-heart-attack-in-minutes/#respond Tue, 05 Jun 2018 05:40:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/blood-test-detects-heart-attack-in-minutes/

The new blood test analyses a cardiac protein – cMyC – whose levels increase rapidly after a heart attack.

People currently suspected of a heart attack are tested for a different protein – troponin – when they arrive in A&E and again three hours later.

But on-the-spot blood tests on more than 700 patients found that cMyC was present 95 per cent of the time in those who had suffered a heart attack.

The figure was just 40 per cent for the protein troponin.

Study leader Dr Tom Kaier at St Thomas’ Hospital, London, said: “It is important to work out early who has had a heart attack.

“Now we know this test is sensitive enough to give an almost immediate heart attack diagnosis, we need to work on developing a testing device. “We’d love to see this used in A&E departments in five years.”

The study was presented to the British Cardiovascular Society Conference in Manchester.

CRISPR pioneer wants to make an at-home test that detects disease https://briefnews.eu/crispr-pioneer-wants-to-make-an-at-home-test-that-detects-disease/ https://briefnews.eu/crispr-pioneer-wants-to-make-an-at-home-test-that-detects-disease/#respond Thu, 26 Apr 2018 18:13:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/crispr-pioneer-wants-to-make-an-at-home-test-that-detects-disease/

Biotech company Mammoth Biosciences is working on a simple, portable test that would give everyone, from healthcare professionals to just people at home, the ability to detect various diseases, infections and cancers quickly and easily. The test would use CRISPR to determine which bacteria, viruses or genetic mutations were present in a person’s blood, saliva or urine and a companion app would inform users about what was detected. “Imagine a world where you could test for the flu right from your living room and determine the exact strain you’ve been infected with, or rapidly screen for the early warning signs of cancer,” Mammoth CEO Trevor Martin said in a statement. “That’s what we’re aiming to do at Mammoth — bring affordable testing to everyone.”

Mammoth was co-founded by CRISPR pioneer Jennifer Doudna and her lab demonstrated CRISPR’s ability to detect types of HPV in a Science paper published earlier this year. CRISPR is a defense mechanism used by bacteria to hone in on and cut strands of DNA at a specific location. Researchers are exploring how to use CRISPR to treat ALS, Huntington’s disease, HIV and sickle cell disease. And it has also demonstrated promise in making pig organs more viable for transplant as well as illuminating the genetic components of human embryo development.

Though the test is still in development and will likely take a few years to hit the market, Mammoth scientists envision a credit-card sized disposable paper strip that anyone could use. CRISPR proteins would hunt for various diseases and infections and would trigger the release of a reporter protein that would light up once particular ones were found. Users would then upload a photo of the test to an app and Mammoth would provide the results as well as professional advice within an hour. The company also sees similar tests being useful in other industries such as agriculture, forensics and petroleum.

An MIT lab also credited with pioneering CRISPR technology is working on a similar test. Recent research from the scientists showed how a simple paper strip loaded with CRISPR enzymes can detect viruses like Zika and dengue in human samples.

“Mammoth’s technology exemplifies some of the most urgent, impactful and untapped potential in the CRISPR space,” said Doudna. “With use cases ranging from individuals to larger healthcare systems, agriculture, mining and beyond, Mammoth is taking CRISPR out of the lab to create something that is transformative for the general public.”

Cancer BREAKTHROUGH: Blood test detects eight types of cancer when they’re ‘more curable' https://briefnews.eu/cancer-breakthrough-blood-test-detects-eight-types-of-cancer-when-theyre-more-curable/ https://briefnews.eu/cancer-breakthrough-blood-test-detects-eight-types-of-cancer-when-theyre-more-curable/#respond Fri, 19 Jan 2018 11:28:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cancer-breakthrough-blood-test-detects-eight-types-of-cancer-when-theyre-more-curable/

A blood test could detect cancers at a point where they’re more curable, researchers have claimed.

The test, known as CancerSEEK, could identify eight common types of cancer; ovarian, liver, stomach, pancreatic, oesophageal, colorectal, lung and breast cancers.

It successfully detects the disease 70 per cent of the time, studies have shown.

CancerSEEK would cost the patient about £360 ($ 500) for a single blood test, the US scientists estimated. That’s about the equivalent price, or cheaper, than current screening tests for any single type of cancer, they claimed.

“Potentially we can use a blood test like this to screen for undiagnosed cancers in asymptomatic people, and identify cancers at a point where they are more curable,” said The Institute of Cancer Research, London’s Professor of Molecular Oncology, Nicholas Turner.

“This paper is a step along the way to a possible blood test to screen for cancer, and the data presented is convincing from a technical perspective on the blood test.”

The test works by searching for tiny amounts of mutated DNA and proteins in the blood.

The mutated DNA and proteins are released by tumours.

CancerSEEK was tested on more than 1,000 patients with cancers that hadn’t yet spread to other parts of the body.

The blood test successfully identified the cancers 70 per cent of the time.

Five of the eight cancers analysed currently have no screening programmes for early detection.

But, more research is needed to confirm the test’s effectiveness, said Turner.

“The study does not support use of the blood test outside research studies,” he said.

“It has not shown yet whether the blood test has the characteristics required for population screening, nor whether the blood test will improve outcome.”

There was also a one per cent ‘false positive’ rate with the blood test, which could be a concern for population screening, he added.

“We need larger population studies to assess blood tests like this, and it is important that we wait for the results of these studies before people consider having the tests.”

Kaspersky Lab detects virus that steals bitcoin & other cryptocurrencies https://briefnews.eu/kaspersky-lab-detects-virus-that-steals-bitcoin-other-cryptocurrencies/ https://briefnews.eu/kaspersky-lab-detects-virus-that-steals-bitcoin-other-cryptocurrencies/#respond Thu, 02 Nov 2017 14:45:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kaspersky-lab-detects-virus-that-steals-bitcoin-other-cryptocurrencies/

Russian cybersecurity company Kaspersky Lab said it has detected a new malware able to steal cryptocurrencies from users’ web wallets by replacing their address with that of its creator.

Cybercriminals are targeting digital currencies such as bitcoin, ethereum, zcash, dash, monero and others, according to the company. However, the maximum losses were borne by owners of bitcoin-wallets with nearly 23 bitcoins worth over $ 160,000 stolen. Sums stolen from other digital wallets are ranging from a few dollars to several thousand.

“Cryptocurrency is not a far-off technology anymore. Lately, we have observed an increase in malware attacks targeting different types of cryptocurrencies and we expect this trend to continue,” Sergey Yunakovsky, a malware analyst at Kaspersky Lab, said in a statement.

The new virus, named CryptoShuffler, activates itself when a targeted user attempts to transfer money from one wallet to another. The procedure requires the recipient’s wallet ID, which commonly consists of a long set of symbols and is impossible to memorize, making a user apply a copy-paste option.

The process involves copying wallets’ numbers and pasting them into the “destination address” line of the software that is used to carry out a transaction. At that stage, CryptoShuffler starts to monitor the device’s clipboard, utilized by a victim when making a payment.

The virus replaces the wallet with one owned by the creator, which means that a user pastes the wallet ID, not in the address they originally intended to send money to. As a result, a user transfers his or her money directly to cybercriminals, unless the user spots the sudden replacement.

Seoul detects radioactive gas from N. Korea nuke test https://briefnews.eu/seoul-detects-radioactive-gas-from-n-korea-nuke-test/ https://briefnews.eu/seoul-detects-radioactive-gas-from-n-korea-nuke-test/#respond Wed, 13 Sep 2017 08:09:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/seoul-detects-radioactive-gas-from-n-korea-nuke-test/ A radioactive gas, xenon-133, has been detected from the recent North Korean nuclear test, the South’s nuclear watchdog said, adding that it is still unclear whether it was from a hydrogen bomb test as Pyongyang claimed.

Traces of the xenon isotope were detected in the north-eastern part of the country on nine occasions, the South Korean Nuclear Safety and Security Commission said. The Commission’s mobile detectors also found traces of xenon off the country’s east coast four times.

“It was difficult to find out how powerful the nuclear test was with the amount of xenon detected, but we can say the xenon was from North Korea,” executive commissioner Choi Jongbae told a news conference in Seoul on Wednesday.

Earlier in September Pyongyang claimed that it had successfully tested a hydrogen bomb which can be mounted on an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM).

Seoul started collecting radioactive nuclides and increased its radiation monitoring level following Pyongyang’s nuclear test, according to numerous reports from the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission.

Xenon was first detected in the sample collected by “the stationery capturing equipment installed on land”, the commission’s report said September 8. However, at that time it wasn’t clear whether the xenon level was linked to the North’s test.

The amount of the radioactive gas detected is some 0.43 milibecquerel per cubic meter, the commission said, as cited by Yonhap news agency.

This amount would not have any effects on public health as South Korea’s radiation levels remain normal, the commission added.

Xenon, a colorless and odorless gas, occurs naturally and can be found in mineral springs, asteroids and the Earth’s atmosphere. It is often used in the manufacture of lighting. However, its isotope xenon-133 does not occur naturally. Small amounts of it is used in medicine for diagnostic inhalation only, according to medical websites.

Exposure can cause nausea, convulsions and a potentially fatal coma, according to the Lantheus medical website. It has been known to cause cancer and adverse reproductive effects.

The test aggravated the already tense situation on the Korean peninsula even further. In response to North Korea’s actions, South Korea and the US began discussions on the deployment of an aircraft carrier and strategic bombers in the region.

South Korea also immediately held live-fire naval drills involving guided-missile vessels and aimed at preparing to “hit back and bury” the enemy in the event of provocation. The drills involved the 2,500-ton Incheon-class frigate ‘Gangwon’, a 1,000-ton patrol ship, several 400-ton guided-missile vessels and 130-ton high-speed boats maneuvering in the Sea of Japan (also called the East Sea by South Korea).

In its harshest response yet to North Korea’s nuclear tests, US President Donald Trump vowed to use the “full range” of capabilities at his country’s disposal, and said the US might resort to using its nuclear arsenal against North Korea if it continues to threaten the US or its allies.

Russia has repeatedly said that that it is important to prevent escalation of the crisis on the Korean Peninsula, calling for a diplomatic solution.

North Korea is “extremely interested in direct dialogue with Washington,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.

“I am not sure that the US administration has enough political will and determination to enter into such a dialogue,” he added.

AI that detects sarcasm and irony? Perfect 🙄 https://briefnews.eu/ai-that-detects-sarcasm-and-irony-perfect-%f0%9f%99%84/ https://briefnews.eu/ai-that-detects-sarcasm-and-irony-perfect-%f0%9f%99%84/#respond Tue, 09 May 2017 00:27:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ai-that-detects-sarcasm-and-irony-perfect-%f0%9f%99%84/

Increasingly, companies are turning to artificial intelligence to understand what people say about their products and services on Twitter or Facebook. The goal is to react more quickly to complainers and perhaps sell more stuff to happy customers.

But with sarcasm, there is a big gap between what people say and what they mean. And, because computers tend to take everything literally, they simply don’t get the joke.

For example, “You look wonderful,” can mean two very different things depending on the context and the speaker. It could mean that you do, in fact, look great, or it could mean the opposite coming from the late comedian Don Rickles, with his trademark exaggerated eye roll.

This is one reason people still get frustrated with Apple’s Siri, Amazon Alexa, and other virtual personal assistants: They tend to get lost in a world laced with irony.

This is a tough problem for AI to handle, but one that conversational analytics startup Gong, based in Tel Aviv with U.S. offices in Palo Alto, Calif., hopes to solve.

Companies wanting to fine-tune online recommendations, for example, would like to know if a user who wrote, “I loved this movie” is serious or flippant. It’s a problem that film information site The Internet Movie Database tries to overcome using an algorithm that analyzes people’s comments to automatically create a rating of one to 10.

But, a user who says a movie is “fantastic” could generate an excellent review that really does not reflect the user’s intent if he or she meant it sarcastically, Lotem Peled, chief data scientist for Gong, tells Fortune.

The problem is that “input may be sarcastic but output is not sarcastic” she adds. She therefore created a neural network, basically a system that collects conversational data and automatically tries to make sense of it, without programmers having to intervene much.

Any sort of AI project needs to test its theories and hypothesis, so Peled built her own data set from a massive number of tweets over the past few months. During the lead up to the U.S. presidential election, there was “lots of sarcasm out there” to work with, she joked.

Peled is interested in researching problems where AI technology still lags human intelligence. “AI is very advanced in some aspects, but in terms of understanding human nuances it’s still pretty far off.” She conducted research at Technion Israel Institute of Technology, and now Gong is incorporating it in its own software.

By getting a better handle on what people really mean, Gong thinks it can help do some very pragmatic things like helping sales people close more deals. To accomplish that, Gong records phone or online conversations between sales people and customers or would-be customers.

By analyzing information about who speaks longer—the buyer or seller—as well as pauses in the conversation, along with how many deals get done, Gong says it can help sales teams sell better. Gong technology can thus be used in conjunction with business software from Salesforce and other companies, she noted, that teams use to track sales and target potential customers.

“It’s not quantitative but qualitative data,” said Peled, whose project, which she calls the “Sarcasm Sentimental Interpretation GeNerator” (SIGN), is detailed here.

Basically, Peled’s system looks at conversations and parses not only words for what is positive or negative as well as pauses between speakers and words. then it maps the conversations to sales outcomes. Did this chat lead to an additional sale or not?

To be fair, virtually every software company, including Salesforce, Microsoft, Google and others are talking a lot about integrating AI smarts into their products. Gong’s secret sauce thus far appears to be its ability to suss out sarcasm.

Above: Gong relies on artificial intelligence to detect sarcasm.

There are also important noncommercial uses for this research. Improving AI’s understanding of sarcasm could help people with Autism or Asperger’s syndrome, who often have difficulty discerning whether others are being sarcastic, by cuing them in to the meaning of what people say to them.

There are other nuances that AI could address better as well. For example, knowing when words are meant literally or figuratively can avoid a lot of problems.

Anyone who remembers the late, great Get Smart sitcom of the 1960s may recall that Hymie the Robot was overly literal. When someone told Hymie to “kill the lights,” for example, Hymie would shoot out the lights.
