The US government killed off its net neutrality rules in June of this year, but that doesn’t mean no one is monitoring whether carriers are blocking or throttling online services.

Northeastern University researchers led by computer science professor David Choffnes recently determined that Sprint was throttling Skype. Their finding was based on an analysis of user-initiated tests conducted with Wehe, an app for Android and iPhone that the researchers developed to detect throttling. About one-third of the tests detected Sprint’s throttling of Skype, Choffnes said.

If the findings are correct, Sprint would be violating a Federal Communications Commission rule requiring Internet providers to disclose throttling. Even though the FCC no longer bans throttling itself, the agency requires ISPs to publicly disclose any blocking, throttling, or paid prioritization.

Scientists have learned a bit about the edge of the Solar System from Voyager 1, but there hasn’t been a lot of corroborating data without follow-up spacecraft. They appear to be getting a second chance, though. NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft has detected what appears to be a “wall” at the edge of the Solar System where interstellar hydrogen gathers as it collides with the solar wind — in other words, the very edge of the Sun’s influence. Researchers found it by capturing a 360-degree snapshot of ultraviolet emissions around the probe, revealing an unusual brightness (potentially bunched-up hydrogen) similar to a signal the Voyager mission detected 30 years ago.

There’s no guarantee that it represents a hydrogen wall, but the consistency is difficult to ignore. You might get proof in time, too. The team plans to keep observing the unusual signal roughly twice a year for as long as the New Horizons mission continues, and researcher Randy Gladstone told Gizmodo that there’s a chance the probe could image the wall in time.

Don’t expect to learn more in the immediate future. Although New Horizons is a relatively fast spacecraft, it will still take about three more decades to reach Voyager 1’s position at the very cusp of interstellar space. And if NASA decides against continuing the program, this signal may be about as good as it gets.

Cancer is the cause of hundreds of thousands of deaths in the UK each year. 

Health bodies and cancer charities are constantly warning people of the signs and symptoms, and the importance of screenings, but many cases go undetected until the disease reaches the later stages. 

New technology that can detect cancer months before it occurs could be the answer to better survival rates, as revealed by chief executive of Nokia Rajeev Suri. 

Speaking at a panel at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, he outlines his vision for the future of medical treatment which also included remote surgeries, 5G ambulances and miniaturised wearable scanners. 

He said: “With these sort of products, you can start to prevent stuff before it occurs and we think through biomarkers you can even figure out cancer several months before it occurs. 

“Think about how important that is when every month and every day is important to a cancer patient.” 

Global technology company Nokia has devoted a new research team to the area of future health case. 

With the arrival of 5G internet connectivity, remote surgery could be made possible as there would almost be no time lag in the data flying across the world, according to Mr Suri. 

He said: “Imagine a doctor in Chicago doing an operation for someone in Taiwan using robotic surgery. You want the doctor to feel immediate feedback to what the robot is experiencing.” 

One product currently underdevelopment at Nokia is wearable sleeve that has chips ale to scan specific information like cholesterol, lactic acid levels or glucose. 

Mr Suri said such a device would “fill the void” between doctor appointments and allow medical professional access to continues information. 

Tessa Jowell, the former Minister of Public Health and Culture, was diagnosed with brain cancer in May 2017. 

Opening up about her condition, she revealed she wants cancer patients to be able to trial potential treatments and therapies. 

She said: “Shall I tell you something? I am absolutely 100 per cent trying to stay alive. That is exactly the kind of risk that patients should be free to take. It should be a risk that they have the chance to take and it’s certainly what somebody like me wants.”

Her daughter-in-law is Ella Mills – better known as Deliciously Ella – who married her son Matt Mills in a ceremony on the island of Mustique in 2016.

The food blogger wrote on Instagram: “Matt’s Mum was suddenly diagnosed with brain cancer in May.

The Argentinian Defense Ministry says it has detected seven failed “satellite calls,” likely originating from the missing submarine the ARA San Juan. The submarine, with 44 crew members on board, has been lost since Wednesday, with an extensive search operation under way. The satellite calls detected by the Defense Ministry lasted from four to 36 seconds, and were made late Saturday morning and early afternoon, the ministry said in an emailed statement, cited by Reuters. Their exact location is now being traced with the help of an unidentified US company.

Hackers behind the massive Equifax data breach began their attack no later than early March, more than four months before company officials discovered the intrusion, according to a report published Wednesday by the Wall Street Journal.

The first evidence of the hackers’ “interaction” with the Equifax network occurred on March 10, according to the report, which cited a confidential note that security firm FireEye sent to some Equifax customers. By then, a critical vulnerability in the Apache Struts Web application framework was already under active exploit on the Internet. Equifax officials have said the Struts flaw was the opening that gave attackers an initial hold in the targeted network.

Equifax has said that the breach that exposed sensitive data for as many as 143 million US consumers started on May 13 and lasted until July 30. The company didn’t disclose the breach until September 7.
