“Red Dead Redemption 2,” out now for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, is one of the most detailed video games ever developed.

Just how detailed is the game exactly?

While there are tons of activities and storylines to explore in “Red Dead Redemption 2,” Joe from the YouTube gaming channel DefendTheHouse recently decided to spend a full day in the game just following around a handful of non-playable characters, or NPCs, and nothing more.

The results are fascinating. These characters hardly play a role in the game, yet they still have unique schedules and characteristics.

Take a look at what happens when you follow random people around in “Red Dead Redemption 2” all day:

Here’s our first NPC. Let’s call him Shepherd. Around 8 a.m., Shepherd heads off to work.

He tends to sheep at the farm between 8:30 a.m. and noon.

Around 12:30 p.m., Shepherd moves bags of feed to the farm for the pigs, sheep, and goats.

Jaw-Dropping Bookends Feature Detailed Back-Alley Dioramas https://briefnews.eu/jaw-dropping-bookends-feature-detailed-back-alley-dioramas/ https://briefnews.eu/jaw-dropping-bookends-feature-detailed-back-alley-dioramas/#respond Thu, 06 Dec 2018 21:10:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jaw-dropping-bookends-feature-detailed-back-alley-dioramas/ If you’re a design-savvy bookworm, you love a cool bookend — after all, if you’ve got a lot of books, you’ve got to keep them tightly organized. We’ve seen some pretty good ones, but we’d never seen anything quite like these jaw-droppers from Toyko designer Monde. He ingeniously combines the bookend with the diorama, to create stunning bookends that feature intricately detailed streets and back alleys of Japan. In other words, you don’t just have to go on a journey in your book; you can go on one between them. Check ‘em out:

All photos courtesy of Monde, who is (to put it mildly) shocked and thrilled by the response to his work — so much so that they only way to get them is by DMing him on Twitter. 2018 Bugatti Chiron Lego Technic kit is amazingly detailed https://briefnews.eu/2018-bugatti-chiron-lego-technic-kit-is-amazingly-detailed/ https://briefnews.eu/2018-bugatti-chiron-lego-technic-kit-is-amazingly-detailed/#respond Sat, 02 Jun 2018 04:24:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/2018-bugatti-chiron-lego-technic-kit-is-amazingly-detailed/

By Joel Stocksdale

Lego has finally followed up its amazing Porsche 911 GT3 Technic kit with a kit that’s arguably more amazing, and certainly has more pieces. It’s the 2018 Bugatti Chiron, and the 1/8 scale kit features 3,599 pieces, which is nearly 1,000 more than the 911.

Those pieces make up an impressively detailed model just on looks alone. The blocky LED lights up front, the wide light bar at the rear and the trademark horseshoe design elements all translate surprisingly well to the Lego format. The interior has detailed seats and instruments, and there’s even some Chiron luggage that fits under the trunk where there exists a unique serial number.

But the really impressive stuff is under the plastic skin. Moving piston engines aren’t new to Technic, but it is cool to see that Lego managed to create a tiny version of the W16 engine. You can clearly see each bank of narrow angle V8s and watch all the pistons dance. The engine is even hooked up to a real 8-speed sequential transmission. The transmission can be shifted via paddles in the driver’s side footwell. The rear wing moves up and down, too, and is lowered for high-speed mode with a key you build out of Lego pieces.

You’ll want to make sure you have plenty of space on your table top for the finished product, since it’s nearly two feet long. And budget plenty of time for assembling those thousands of pieces. But once you’re finished, you’ll have your own Bugatti Chiron with many of the same functioning features for so much less money.

On that topic, the Chiron kit will cost $ 349.99, which isn’t entirely cheap, but it is coming with a lot of parts and functionality. It’s available through Lego stores both physical and online right now, and hits other stores on August 1.

ESA releases the most detailed star map yet https://briefnews.eu/esa-releases-the-most-detailed-star-map-yet/ https://briefnews.eu/esa-releases-the-most-detailed-star-map-yet/#respond Sun, 29 Apr 2018 08:02:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/esa-releases-the-most-detailed-star-map-yet/

The European Space Agency has updated Gaia’s 3D star map, making it much richer and more likely to make you feel like a tiny speck of dust in an incredibly vast universe. This updated map includes stellar objects up to 8,000 light-years away, whereas the first one only covered an area within 500 light-years of where we are. It shows the location and brightness of 1.7 billion stars in our galaxy and beyond, over half a billion more than the first set of data the ESA released back in 2016. Even more impressive is that it also includes the distances and motions of a whopping 1.3 billion stars — the previous map only contained those values for 2 million.

The Gaia satellite and its one-billion-pixel camera have been mapping the Milky Way (and more) since 2013, collecting data to reveal new information, such as stars we haven’t seen before. In addition to the location, brightness, distances and motions of over a billion stars, Gaia’s second set of data also includes color measurements of nearly all the star subjects, surface temperatures of about 100 million, the effect of interstellar dust on 87 million, as well as the positions of more than 14,000 known asteroids.

The satellite’s data could keep astronomers busy for years. Scientists are already using it to study the evolution of our galaxy, the gravitational forces at play in space and the distribution of dark matter. “Gaia will greatly advance our understanding of the Universe on all cosmic scales,” one of the project scientists, Timo Prusti, said. “Even in the neighbourhood of the Sun, which is the region we thought we understood best, Gaia is revealing new and exciting features.”

You can watch 960 million of the 1.7 billion stars in motion in the video below, but you can expect to see another one in a few years that looks even denser. Gaia Science Operations Manager Uwe Lammers told Gizmodo that his team is hoping to release a third set of data in 2020.

David Davis says Britain will not pay the £39 billion Brexit bill if EU doesn’t offer a detailed deal https://briefnews.eu/david-davis-says-britain-will-not-pay-the-39-billion-brexit-bill-if-eu-doesnt-offer-a-detailed-deal/ https://briefnews.eu/david-davis-says-britain-will-not-pay-the-39-billion-brexit-bill-if-eu-doesnt-offer-a-detailed-deal/#respond Thu, 12 Apr 2018 10:21:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/david-davis-says-britain-will-not-pay-the-39-billion-brexit-bill-if-eu-doesnt-offer-a-detailed-deal/ brexit david davis mpJack Taylor/Getty Images

  • David Davis says MPs could block a £39 billion Brexit payment to the EU if Brussels does not offer  “substantive” information about the future UK-EU relationship in the withdrawal deal.
  • The EU wants to negotiate the finer points of the future relationship during an implementation period.
  • However, Brexit Secretary David said on Thursday there was “no point having an implementation period if you’re not sure what you’re going to implement.”
  • The UK and EU hope to conclude a final Brexit deal by October.

LONDON — David Davis has warned the European Union that MPs could block a £39 billion Brexit bill — and a final Brexit deal — if “substantive” information on the future relationship is not included in the withdrawal deal.

The Brexit Secretary, speaking at a Wall Street Journal event in London, said the final deal — which both sides hope to agree by October — should include “a lot of detail” on the future relationship in key areas such as regulation and trade.

The Best Man review: Richly detailed, perfectly paced and splendidly cast https://briefnews.eu/the-best-man-review-richly-detailed-perfectly-paced-and-splendidly-cast/ https://briefnews.eu/the-best-man-review-richly-detailed-perfectly-paced-and-splendidly-cast/#respond Sun, 11 Mar 2018 17:20:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-best-man-review-richly-detailed-perfectly-paced-and-splendidly-cast/

He shared a stepfather with Jackie Kennedy and twice ran unsuccessfully for office.

It’s really no surprise that his 1960 play The Best Man, a tale of wheeler-dealing at a fictitious Democratic convention, has the ring of truth – or, given the ubiquitous corruption, the reek of authenticity.

Rival candidates William Russell, an honourable statesman with a history of depression (Martin Shaw), and Joseph Cantwell, a thuggish populist with a sexual secret (Jeff Fahey), fight it out in a Philadelphia hotel to gain the party’s presidential nomination.

Throw in a dying former president (a gleefully malevolent Jack Shepherd), a power-broking woman delegate (a deliciously disdainful Maureen Lipman), the candidates’ respective wives (Glynis Barber and Honeysuckle Weeks), and various aides and reporters, and the hotel doors swing back and forth as furiously as in a Feydeau farce.

Vidal’s sympathies are clearly with Russell, a “brilliant, witty, aristocratic, intellectual,” who sounds like a self-portrait.

Keeping to a well-made-play structure, he ratchets up the tension as to whether Russell will fight fire with fire right up to the final curtain.

Simon Evans’s production is richly detailed, perfectly paced and splendidly cast.

Given the current state of US politics, its revival could not be more opportune.

There is less to applaud in Stephen Beresford’s take on Ingmar Bergman’s masterpiece Fanny And Alexander which, like last week’s Harold And Maude, is a pale imitation of a filmic original.

Oft caricatured as a purveyor of Nordic gloom, Bergman made several life-affirming comedies, none more so than this 1982 semi-autobiographical portrait of an acting dynasty seen through the eyes of the titular children.

Beresford’s adaptation is clunky. It’d be wrong to expect him to recreate Bergman’s lavish period interiors or the play of light and shadows so fundamental to his art, but he should have done more than simply fillet the film for key episodes, thereby failing to create a distinctive theatrical rhythm.

He’s at his best in the actors’ rehearsal scenes, in which Penelope Wilton is gloriously funny as the semi-retired matriarch.

But his interpolations (in particular, the scythe-wielding figure of Death taken from Bergman’s The Seventh Seal) are painfully ill-judged.

Moreover, the long passages of amplified narration seem like an admission of defeat.

Max Webster’s production contains fine performances from Michael Pennington as a benign Jewish shopkeeper, Kevin Doyle as a repressed and repressive bishop, Jonathan Slinger as a philandering restaurateur, along with a remarkably assured one from Guillermo Bedward as Alexander at the performance I saw.

Bergman, a consummate stage as well as film director, would never have brooked the clumsy scene changes, clichéd tableaux and sluggish pace.

It’s 30 years since I saw the film but many of its images remain with me; I doubt that any of these will last 30 days.

Roger Federer: Ivan Ljubicic reveals detailed insight into coaching Swiss star https://briefnews.eu/roger-federer-ivan-ljubicic-reveals-detailed-insight-into-coaching-swiss-star/ https://briefnews.eu/roger-federer-ivan-ljubicic-reveals-detailed-insight-into-coaching-swiss-star/#respond Thu, 22 Feb 2018 22:32:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/roger-federer-ivan-ljubicic-reveals-detailed-insight-into-coaching-swiss-star/

Ljubicic reached a career-high of world No 3 and won ten titles in his career before retiring in 2012.

Milos Raonic was the first player the Croatian coached and their relationship lasted two years before he became Federer’s coach in 2016.

Under Ljubicic’s helm, Federer has enjoyed a remarkable resurgence winning three Grand Slam titles, including the recent Australian Open.

Federer’s long-term coach has been Severin Luthi but he has co-coached the 20-time Grand Slam champion with Ljubicic.

And the two coaches were in the stands in Rotterdam as Federer became the oldest world No 1 in men’s history.

But Ljubicic says his coaching methods are based around listening to the player to get the best from them.

He told ATPWorldTour.com: “When you talk about coaching at the highest level, you have to listen a lot.

“The most important thing is to understand a player. Listen at the beginning, but then listening in general to understand and ultimately help a player.

“When you start with a player in the middle of a season, such as Milos, you can’t step in and say, ‘I want to change everything, because this is how I did it.’ I feel that it doesn’t work like that.

“You see, if you are coaching a player, who has been around for a while, he has his own patterns and ideas.

“His own opinions on a lot of stuff, and you have to pick your fights on what you think will have the biggest impact on a game or the result.”

Facebook makes it easier to share detailed 3D objects https://briefnews.eu/facebook-makes-it-easier-to-share-detailed-3d-objects/ https://briefnews.eu/facebook-makes-it-easier-to-share-detailed-3d-objects/#respond Tue, 20 Feb 2018 19:34:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/facebook-makes-it-easier-to-share-detailed-3d-objects/

Facebook has had the option to post 3D objects for a while, and now you’ll have some better reasons to use it. The social site has introduced support for a standard 3D file format (gITF 2.0) that not only allows for richer objects with more realistic rendering like textures and lighting, but easier ways to share those objects. New developer hooks in Graph let any app share 3D content, including things you’ve created on your phone. Xperia XZ1 owners can capture an item in 3D Creator and send it directly to their Facebook feed, for instance. You can also share objects directly from libraries like Oculus Medium or (eventually) Google Poly.

The company has also hinted at “higher quality” 3D models, animations and more augmented reality.

Facebook isn’t shy about why it’s pushing these improvements. It has a vested interest in fostering as much VR-friendly material as it can, and that means encouraging people to share in 3D on a regular basis. The more you see in your News Feed, the more likely it is that you pick up an Oculus Rift to get a more immersive experience.

NASA releases stunningly detailed image of Mars basin ‘favorable’ to life https://briefnews.eu/nasa-releases-stunningly-detailed-image-of-mars-basin-favorable-to-life/ https://briefnews.eu/nasa-releases-stunningly-detailed-image-of-mars-basin-favorable-to-life/#respond Sat, 27 Jan 2018 00:52:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nasa-releases-stunningly-detailed-image-of-mars-basin-favorable-to-life/

NASA has released a stunningly detailed photograph of the Ladon Basin on Mars, providing valuable new insight on an area it believes could have been favorable for life on the Red Planet thousands of years ago.

The region is hugely interesting to Mars researchers because it shows significant signs of ancient lakes and rivers. The area features a huge impact crater, which was filled in with deposits left behind by a major ancient river called the Ladon Valles.

“These wet sediments were altered into minerals such as various clay minerals,” the space agency said in a statement.

“Clays imply chemistry that may have been favorable for life on ancient Mars, if anything lived there, so this could be a good spot for future exploration by rovers and perhaps return of samples to Earth.”

Large elliptical craters have previously been identified in the basin. These craters are formed when asteroids or comets strike the surface of the planet at a shallow angle. Studies of the crater patterns suggest the area was probably covered in ice which melted during the impact.

The picture was taken by a camera on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). The MRO has been orbiting Mars since 2006 carrying out reconnaissance and exploration work.

Apple Music now offers artists detailed streaming and download info https://briefnews.eu/apple-music-now-offers-artists-detailed-streaming-and-download-info/ https://briefnews.eu/apple-music-now-offers-artists-detailed-streaming-and-download-info/#respond Mon, 22 Jan 2018 19:47:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/apple-music-now-offers-artists-detailed-streaming-and-download-info/

As a musician, knowing how your songs are performing on streaming platforms is important. Spotify brought real-time stats and demographic information to a dedicated app for artists this past October, while Pandora and YouTube have had similar dashboards for a while now. Finally, Cupertino is catching up with the beta launch of Apple Music for Artists, a dashboard that lets users drill down into various statistics on song performance from now to as far back as 2015, when the Apple Music service launched.

According to Billboard, the service is rolling out to a few thousand artists at first, with a planned full launch to all who have tracks on Apple Music and iTunes. Billboard says the dashboard will show users the current number of plays, spins, song purchases and album purchases, while a special insights panel will provide information on key milestones, like cumulative plays and purchases for individual tracks.

Artists can dig even deeper, too, with a global map to see how their songs are doing in any of the 115 countries Apple Music and iTunes operates in. Further geographic and demographic information is available with just a few clicks. Some of this information will help tour planners know which cities to aim for, notes Billboard, or even plan set lists based on how well the artist’s songs are doing in individual areas.
