Constipation is a common condition defined as having fewer than three bowel movements a week.

It can also mean that you are unable to completely empty your bowel, or that stools are hard and lumpy, as well as unusually large or small.

According to the NHS, it can be caused by not eating enough fibre, certain medications, not drinking enough fluids, anxiety and ignoring the urge to pass stools.

While not usually a sign of anything serious, it can be very uncomfortable.

Symptoms of constipation include hard stools, straining to have a bowel movement, abdominal pain, nausea and bloating.

The NHS recommends changing your diet as one of the first things to try to combat it.

Increasing intake of fibre – such as from fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains – can help.

It is recommended people consume 30g of fibre a day, according to the British Nutrition Foundation.

However, some foods can be particularly effective in helping relieve constipation.

Rhubarb – a vegetable commonly consumed in rhubarb crumble – has a laxative effect which can help stop symptoms.

But experts recommend it should only be used for a short period.

A study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology found that it has anti-diarrhoeal effects – meaning it stops you needing the toilet as much if you suffer from diarrhoea – because of its tannin content.

Small lifestyle changes often means constipation will go away on its own, however there are certain occasions when you should seek medical attention for it.

This includes finding blood in your stool, severe abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss and having alternating constipation and diarrhoea.

Doctors can prescribe an oral laxative medication that helps you to empty your bowels.

It is important to not ignore symptoms since long-term constipation can cause haemorrhoids, faecal impaction, bowel incontinence, and in rare cases it could be a sign of cancer.

The remaining groups of professional pastry chefs were tasked by judges Cherish and Benoit Blin to make four different sets of mini desserts.

Liam’s team decided to be experimental, making an impressive-looking white chocolate chip cup with a gin gel, however, the bold move backfired when it came to the judges’ tasting.

Unable to hide the disgusted look on her face, Cherish, who is an award-winning pastry chef herself, began to gag as she chomped down on the gin-infused chocolate.

The outspoken culinary expert shocked presenter Angus Deayton by promptly running off camera to dispose of the petit four. 

When she returned, she scolded: “You almost killed me with the acidity!”

Before adding: “It was so sharp that I didn’t know whether I was going to spit it out or swallow. It wasn’t that pleasant for me.”

Those watching at home found the whole saga hilarious, with one viewer summarising: “Oh dear. It may not augur that well, if Cherish rushes off to vomit and comes back to accuse them of trying to kill her. #GBBOCreme.”(sic)

Another quipped: “@cherish_finden needs a designer bucket me thinks #GBBOCreme.”

“Kind of wish Cherish had just spat it out onto their shoes and then slapped them #gbbocreme,” someone else joked.

While a fourth cheekily tweeted: “Woman got a surprise in her mouth which left her wondering whether to spit or swallow. Finally #GBBOCreme has some innuendo banter.”

Bake Off Creme de la Creme continues next Tuesday at 8pm on BBC Two.

These are weird questions to ask about dessert, but considering that I was holding a smoking cup of rainbow-colored cereal-like balls, and my fellow foodies were crunching on them and crafting smoke rings, I felt some advice was necessary.

As a West Coast transplant, it’s been some time since I’ve been a freezing, parka-wearing cloud-breather. But now I’m re-creating that experience, sans shivering, with Dragon’s Breath, a liquid nitrogen–infused dessert that turns your mouth into a steam machine. Imported from South Korea, this novelty treat is icy to the touch, each multicolored sphere about the size of a marble.

Chocolate Chair

Don’t think of it as food, think food-tainment. Vapor billowed from my cup, small pillowy clouds coalescing above my hands. I used a stick to place one in my mouth, and the first bite released another thick waft of smoke. The more experienced Dragon’s Breath folk in the crowd were exhaling through the nose, creating the dragonlike resemblance for which the snack is named, albeit a Puff-style dragon with a penchant for children’s cereal.

When the liquid nitrogen hits the cereal balls, they start changing hue, shifting from a pastel shade to fluorescent primary colors.

As a lifelong sugar lover, I’m hard to please, having experimented with Australian fairy floss, salivated over deep-fried candy bars and puzzled my way through avocado-and-cactus ice cream (weirdly delicious). But Dragon’s Breath is something else — something so unusual that the line for the Chocolate Chair, the dessert bar in San Francisco’s Japan Center that sells them, was three-people-deep.

Twenty-four-year-old Cesar Rojas, who works behind the counter, has a routine with a rhythm to it: Scoop the cereal balls into a mixing bowl, twist open the liquid nitrogen valve, shake the balls and then serve with a flourish. “It’s popular with adults and kids,” Rojas says as he passes a steaming cup to an excited customer.

Dragon Breath

The liquid nitrogen makes the magic happen, and the Chocolate Chair has huge tanks of the stuff. The cereal balls are flash frozen in less than 90 seconds, a process that also causes tiny ice crystals to form on the outside of the bowl. When the liquid nitrogen hits the cereal balls, they start changing hue, shifting from a pastel shade to fluorescent primary colors. Rojas says that color change is a signifier they’re ready to go. “It’s weird, but you get used to it,” he says. “It tastes like Froot Loops.”

The texture is light and crunchy, and while it’s not the most delicious dessert, the entertainment factor makes it worthy of multiple visits. Currently available at four locations in California, Dragon’s Breath is cheap enough — $ 4.99 for a small order, $ 6.99 for a large — for the adventurous to get their dragon on, and so very Instagrammable.
