When I think about the biggest changes in the world of technology over the past 10 years, one that stands out is the global transition to wireless gadgets. We’ve ditched landlines for smartphones, cable boxes for media streamers, and desktops for laptops.

Our speakers and headphones play music that’s streamed over Wi-Fi or a cellular network from a phone via Bluetooth, which is good because it probably doesn’t have a headphone jack anymore. We don’t need to plug our smartphones to a power source with a cable anymore, nor do we have to plug our gaming consoles into a router over ethernet to play games with our friends online.

This future is great for a lot of reasons, but my favorite is having a nice, clean desk that’s free of cords that are slowly fraying despite me trying to keep them in good shape. It also means fewer cables in trash cans, landfills, and junk drawers.

If you’re trying to embrace this cord-free world, the Insider Picks team can help. We’ve rounded up all of the wireless technology we use on a regular basis to help you get started. Whether you’re looking to get your first pair of Bluetooth headphones, want a rock-solid Wi-Fi system, or need a subtle way to integrate wireless chargers into your home, you’ll find what you’re looking for below.

A Sonos wireless speaker

Sonos

Sonos PLAY:1 Speaker, $ 149, available at Amazon

I absolutely love the Sonos PLAY:1 speaker, which sits in the living room of my apartment. It’s small, but powerful enough to fill the room with rich sound, particularly the bass. Sonos’ app, which controls the speaker, is easy to use, and it works with of all the popular music streaming services. — Connie Chen, Insider Picks reporter

A small, waterproof Bluetooth speaker

JBL

JBL Clip 2 Waterproof Portable Bluetooth Speaker, $ 41.99 , available at Amazon

JBL’s palm-sized Clip 2 speaker is lightweight and comes with a handy carabiner. While it’s not exactly a boombox, the speaker plays loudly and crisply enough for my ears. I take it out on the water and, frankly, abuse the hell out of it. It regularly gets wet with mucky, brackish saltwater, and has been dropped and scraped across my fiberglass deck on more than one occasion. It holds a good charge all day (at least 12 hours, though probably a good bit longer), and automatically pairs with my iPhone when I turn it on. — Owen Burke, Insider Picks buying guides writer

Beats Solo3 Wireless Headphones, $ 197, available at Amazon

The benefit of wearing wireless headphones doesn’t typically outweigh the headache of constantly charging and pairing them. But the Beats Solo3s are different. They’re my favorite Bluetooth headphones because of how easy they are to use and how good they sound.

The Solo3s also have a 40-hour battery life, so I can go days without charging them, and they automatically pair to my iPhone without me having to manually search through my Bluetooth devices. Although I haven’t needed to use it yet the included auxiliary cable, it’s a solid fail-safe in case their battery dies, or if I decide to use them with a non-Bluetooth device. — Amir Ismael, Insider Picks reporter

• Business Insider reached out to seven successful people to get a glimpse of their workspaces.

Zillow Group CEO Spencer Rascoff, Trivago CEO Rolf Schrömgens, and Thrive Global CEO Arianna Huffington all have something in common. They’re successful business leaders currently helming big-name companies.

But, when it comes to their workspaces, they couldn’t be more different.

Rascoff favors a treadmill desk, Schrömgens likes to move around the office, and Huffington has an affinity for round tables and keeps a phone bed on her desk.

Your work desk can say a lot about your personality, Business Insider previously reported. That’s why we reached out to seven successful business leaders to get a glimpse of their desks.

Here’s what seven top CEOs shared with us:

Ontario native and Evernote CEO Chris O’Neill’s desk reflects his dual citizenship. His workspace boasts both a Canadian flag and an American flag. “It’s a reminder to think about how our company expands across languages and borders,” he told Business Insider.

Evernote

O’Neill’s desk is also stocked with a plan on a page, tons of devices and products to test, and books. Currently, he’s holding onto Kim Scott’s “Radical Candor,” which he said “inspired me to view things differently and my role as leader differently.”

Evernote

O’Neill keeps photos of his kids at his workspace, too. That’s especially fitting, given that the CEO credits his children with introducing him to Evernote. “Being a parent is one of biggest joys of my life — in fact, it is how I started to use Evernote,” he told Business Insider. “I am constantly keeping track of my kids’ schedules, meetings and other activities, and Evernote has been a calm in the chaos.”

Airbnb and WeWork team up to find desks for business travelers https://briefnews.eu/airbnb-and-wework-team-up-to-find-desks-for-business-travelers/ https://briefnews.eu/airbnb-and-wework-team-up-to-find-desks-for-business-travelers/#respond Thu, 05 Oct 2017 03:14:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/airbnb-and-wework-team-up-to-find-desks-for-business-travelers/

There’s one thing a hotel can offer that most Airbnbs can’t: easy access to a conference room and various office amenities. In an effort to make up for that and to entice young professionals to book a rental rather than a hotel room, Airbnb has teamed up with WeWork. According to Bloomberg, corporate customers will be able to save a slot at the nearest WeWork office workspace when they rent a room on Airbnb’s website. As the publication said, the partners will likely have a tough time luring wealthy execs away from their hotels. But the new feature sounds useful for those who simply want access to a desk, printer, WiFi and other common office facilities while traveling.

Airbnb has been trying to win professionals all year by launching new features that cater to their needs. Back in April, when it announced that over 250,000 companies around the world have signed up to use it for work, it launched the “Business Travel Ready” search tool that shows only properties suited for business travelers. In July, Airbnb listings also started popping up on Concur for companies that book rooms through the business travel portal.

Airbnb and WeWork confirmed their partnership to Bloomberg but declined to discuss details, including the new feature’s launch date. The publication said, however, that the new tool will initially be available in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Washington, London and Sydney before making its way to other locations.

WATCH: Future of travel – Airline trials robots that will replace check-in desks https://briefnews.eu/watch-future-of-travel-airline-trials-robots-that-will-replace-check-in-desks/ https://briefnews.eu/watch-future-of-travel-airline-trials-robots-that-will-replace-check-in-desks/#respond Tue, 22 Aug 2017 22:24:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/watch-future-of-travel-airline-trials-robots-that-will-replace-check-in-desks/

The future of travel encompasses a lot of exciting new changes for the industry.

From passport-free security to artificial intelligence vehicles, a lot could change in the next decade.

However, one airline has taken the next steps to improve the way passengers fly.

Yet there is a catch.

Air New Zealand is trialling the new check-in robot for five days this week.

Whilst only at Sydney airport, it is hoped that one day it can be rolled out as a permanent feature.

The robot is part of a collaboration with Commbank, with the companies robot Chip Candroid.

Chip, whilst looking slightly unnerving with two eyes and no mouth, as well as two hands and no legs, is able to read passengers boarding passes through its eyes to help the check in as well as wave goodbye as they board the plane.

Tiziana Bianco, general manager at Innovation Labs said: “It is a wonderful opportunity to explore the possibilities of a horizon technology such as social robotics, and what it might enable in the future.

“Social robots can bring to life information that is not particularly engaging when delivered by a screen. People interact with them in a very social and sometimes emotional way, which means they can enhance experiences in ways that other technologies are unable to.”

Avi Golan, chief digital officer, Air New Zealand, also commented on the exciting new prospect: “This partnership and experiment with CommBank and Chip is another way we are pushing the boundaries to ensure we remain at the forefront of technology.

“We are also experimenting with potential enhancements of the future, including the idea of our cabin crew one day using Microsoft’s HoloLens augmented reality viewers on board our aircraft.”

10 Best Affordable Standing Desks for 2017 https://briefnews.eu/10-best-affordable-standing-desks-for-2017/ https://briefnews.eu/10-best-affordable-standing-desks-for-2017/#respond Mon, 05 Jun 2017 17:28:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/10-best-affordable-standing-desks-for-2017/

There are a surplus of articles on the Internet talking about the harmful impact of too much sitting. It increases the risk of death from cardiovascular disease and cancer. And somehow, all of the gym sessions and exercises might not offset the health issues caused by sitting too much.

Don’t worry, I’m not going to scare you with more facts and negative health effects of sitting too long. But what we need to do is to combat this sedentary lifestyle, and standing desks seem to be the best option.

How is a standing desk going to help?

A study in 2015[1] shows that by combining exercising and standing, you can increase your life expectancy potentially even more. The more you move around, you’ll burn more calories, and it helps your heart to function better, which in turn lessen your risk of chronic diseases.

Another research[2] suggests that workers who stand are more productive than those who remain seated. The study shows a tremendous increase in productivity after 6 months.

Here are 10 best affordable standing desk options for you, and I have arranged them according to their prices!

Why hotels could no longer have wardrobes, desks or MINI BARS https://briefnews.eu/why-hotels-could-no-longer-have-wardrobes-desks-or-mini-bars/ https://briefnews.eu/why-hotels-could-no-longer-have-wardrobes-desks-or-mini-bars/#respond Fri, 26 May 2017 22:36:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/why-hotels-could-no-longer-have-wardrobes-desks-or-mini-bars/

One of the best parts of staying in a hotel room is checking to see what is in the mini bar.

However, this could all change as hotels reinvent the amenities on offer to keep with the growing traveller trends.

Mini bars, desks and wardrobes are all things that could soon be in the past.

TripAdvisor even found that 20 per cent of people felt that the mini bar is the least important part of a hotel room.

Hotels such as Hilton, Starwood and Marriott are all just some of the chains that have decided to remove the in-room mini bar.

Some of the reasons are because people just don’t use them as the high cost of the food can put travellers off.

Of course, whilst some travellers enjoy have an expensive refreshment, they can still head down to the bar or order room service.

Melvin Gold, a leading hotel industry consultant told The Independent, “Minibars were once a source of profit, but they were just too difficult to police. Prices were high because staffing costs were high.”

Desks and wardrobes are also on the list to be knocked off.

Business travellers are more reliant on technology now, meaning fewer documents and work therefore eradicating the need for the desk.

Travellers also are less likely to unpack their suitcases, leaving them empty for the most part of their trip.

Whilst they may seem like unnecessary steps, they can also create much more room for guests to utilise.

#Wannacry ransomware epidemic could spread as unsuspecting workers return to desks – Europol chief https://briefnews.eu/wannacry-ransomware-epidemic-could-spread-as-unsuspecting-workers-return-to-desks-europol-chief/ https://briefnews.eu/wannacry-ransomware-epidemic-could-spread-as-unsuspecting-workers-return-to-desks-europol-chief/#respond Sun, 14 May 2017 12:40:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/wannacry-ransomware-epidemic-could-spread-as-unsuspecting-workers-return-to-desks-europol-chief/

The virus that downed critical digital infrastructure in the UK’s National Health Service and locked thousands of people out of their computers may be about to get worse, warns the head of Europol.

Rob Wainwright, executive director of the European Union’s crime agency, said the spread of the ‘WannaCry’ virus was “unprecedented,” resulting in more than 200,000 victims in at least 150 countries.

“At the moment, we are facing an escalating threat,” Wainwright warned. “The numbers are going up, I am worried about how the numbers will continue to grow when people go to work and turn their machines on Monday morning.”

Speaking on ITV’s Peston on Sunday, Wainwright said that Europol had warned nation states about the risks of such attacks.

“It sends a clear message that all sectors are vulnerable,” Wainwright said, adding “all sectors should take absolutely seriously the need to run updated systems and to patch when they can do that.”

The stark warning from Europol chief’s echoes that of a British cybersecurity blogger known by his Twitter handle @malwaretechblog.

The 22-year-old, who accidentally found a way to stop the ransomware from downloading on devices, has warned that Monday could be a nadir in the epidemic as people return to their desks.

“We have stopped this one, but there will be another one coming and it will not be stoppable by us. There’s a lot of money in this. There’s no reason for them to stop,” he told the BBC, adding “so there’s a good chance they are going to do it… maybe not this weekend, but quite likely on Monday morning.”

Malware Tech, a botnet tracker, reports that, as of Sunday, some 227,000 computers had been infected with the worm-like virus, which encrypts files and demands victims pay a ransom to release them.

The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) was particularly badly hit, with patient data and other administrative information reportedly affected. At least 16 NHS organizations have been infected by the virus, the health service confirmed.

London’s Thames Valley Police have urged people to avoid “opening unknown email attachments or clicking on links in spam emails.”

Meanwhile, Cybersecurity firm Symantec has issued guides for dealing with ransomware.
