  • Juul told its employees on Dec. 11 that California-based employees can no longer vape at their desks, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
  • The company, based in San Francisco, is enforcing a 2016 California law in which e-cigarettes are banned in the workplace.
  • Juul will erect a tent outside of its San Francisco headquarters for vaping.

Employees at Juul Labs Inc. have created the buzziest e-cigarette on the market. There’s no other vape that’s also a verb — “juuling.”

Outgoing White House chief of staff John Kelly is reportedly furious with President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and daughter Ivanka Trump — so much so that he took notes about their activities and requests, and kept them on his desk in full view, a senior White House official said to The New York Times.

Kelly is a former Marine Corps four-star general who was brought into what had been a turbulent White House under Trump, following the ouster of the president’s previous chief of staff, Reince Priebus.

On Wednesday evening, California’s Senate passed SB 100, a bill mandating that utilities serving the state move to 100 percent carbon-free energy by 2045. If the Governor signs the bill into law, it will become one of the most most aggressive in the nation, matching only Hawaii’s carbon-free by 2045 commitment.

California’s bill specifies that any energy obtained outside the state can not contribute to additional greenhouse gas emissions from that state. The stipulation preemptively closes a potential loophole in which California could acquire cheap energy from polluting plants in border states.

The bill also ratchets up the California’s previous carbon-free energy plan, such that the state will have to move to 60 percent carbon-free energy by 2030 rather than 50 percent by 2030.

‘Nothing more terrifying than hearing shooter reload from under your desk’ – Maryland paper survivor https://briefnews.eu/nothing-more-terrifying-than-hearing-shooter-reload-from-under-your-desk-maryland-paper-survivor/ https://briefnews.eu/nothing-more-terrifying-than-hearing-shooter-reload-from-under-your-desk-maryland-paper-survivor/#respond Thu, 28 Jun 2018 22:29:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nothing-more-terrifying-than-hearing-shooter-reload-from-under-your-desk-maryland-paper-survivor/

A crime reporter who witnessed his colleagues being shot at an Annapolis, Maryland newspaper and then waited under his desk for the gunman to pick the next victim, posted a harrowing description of the attack on Twitter.

Five people were killed and several others gravely injured at the offices of Capital Gazette in Annapolis on Thursday. The gunman has been detained.

“A single shooter shot multiple people at my office, some of whom are dead,” reporter Phil Davis tweeted on Thursday afternoon. He added that the gunman “shot through the glass door” and then targeted several of his colleagues, adding “can’t say much more and don’t want to declare anyone dead, but it’s bad.”

Davis, who managed to take cover, recalled that there was “nothing more terrifying than hearing multiple people get shot while you’re under your desk and then hear the gunman reload.”

He then clarified for some of the confused Twitterati that he wasn’t tweeting from under his desk: “I was already safe when I started tweeting.”

In a later interview with the Baltimore Sun, the Gazette’s parent company, Davis described the shooting as “like a war zone”

“I’m a police reporter. I write about this stuff — not necessarily to this extent, but shootings and death — all the time,” he said. “But as much as I’m going to try to articulate how traumatizing it is to be hiding under your desk, you don’t know until you’re there and you feel helpless.”

Davis and other Gazette employees were still hiding when the shooting stopped: “I don’t know why. I don’t know why he stopped,” Davis said.

Anne Arundel County Police reached the building within two minutes of receiving the active shooter call and arrested the suspect, officials said on Thursday. They could not confirm reports that the suspect used a shotgun in the attack.

  • Your phone is probably hurting your ability to focus at work, according to new scientific research.
  • In fact, people generally don’t realize how their phone is affecting their behavior.
  • The best solution is to plan to keep your phone in another room at certain times.

I could start this article with a quip about how my phone is sitting right next to me as I’m writing about the dangers of having your phone sitting next to you at work. (#irony!) But that wouldn’t be especially interesting.

Now, if I started this article by saying that my phone was somewhere else — say, in my purse or in another room in the office — that would be truly horrifying.

Ask Engadget: Is a 4K monitor the best choice for my desk? https://briefnews.eu/ask-engadget-is-a-4k-monitor-the-best-choice-for-my-desk/ https://briefnews.eu/ask-engadget-is-a-4k-monitor-the-best-choice-for-my-desk/#respond Sat, 24 Feb 2018 17:52:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ask-engadget-is-a-4k-monitor-the-best-choice-for-my-desk/

The support shared between readers in the comments section is one of the things we love most about the Engadget community. Over the years, we’ve known you to offer sage advice on everything from Chromecasts and cameras to drones and smartphones. In fact, our community’s knowledge and insights are a reason why many of you participate in the comments.

We truly value the time and detail you all spend in responding to questions from your fellow tech-obsessed commenters, which is why we’ve decided to bring back the much-missed “Ask Engadget” column. This week’s question comes from a reader who is interested in a 4K monitor purchase but unsure of where to start. Weigh in with your advice in the comments — and feel free to send your own questions along to ask@engadget.com!

I’m considering buying a budget (sub-$ 500) 4K monitor for desk work. I am not concerned about color quality, refresh rate or any flashy gaming features. I just want a 4K monitor between 32 and 40 inches to avoid a multiple monitor computer setup. I’m aware that I won’t find top-tier brands in that price range, but do you otherwise have any advice? Are there brands I should absolutely avoid? I know in this price range a lot of brands are essentially the same with a different label. And what about manufacturers’ warranties?

You’re in luck, dear reader. 4K monitors are a lot cheaper now, compared to just a year or two ago. You can find plenty of great 27-inch options in your price range, like the LG 27UD68P-B and Dell P2715Q.

Things get a bit trickier when you bump up to 32 inches, though. On Newegg.com, there are a few larger 4K models from Acer and LG on sale for under $ 500, but you’ll have to act quickly to lock in those prices. Personally, I’d trust an LG panel more than Acer’s. I’d also suggest you avoid no-name brands, which typically don’t have great build quality or support.

But, you might also want to ask yourself if you actually need a 4K monitor. They’re great if you want that extra resolution for photo or video editing, but they don’t exactly replicate a multi-monitor setup. And while Windows 10 does a much better job of supporting higher resolutions than before, its 4K handling is still a bit wonky. You’ll likely have to scale up the contents of your screen to make text and apps legible. Depending on the size of your screen, native 4K rendering can sometimes make everything too small to read.

Another option: Consider an ultra-wide monitor. These models offer a 21:9 aspect ratio, compared to the 16:9 on normal widescreen monitors. They make it seem like you have two monitors side-by-side, except you don’t have to worry about annoying bezels separating them. I’ve found ultra-wide monitors to be far more useful for desktop computing than 4K models. Being able to have multiple full-sized windows on my screen at once, or use extra-wide windows for audio and video editing, feels like a genuine upgrade over traditional monitors. They also make gaming more immersive, since they offer a wider field of view.

The only downside to ultra-wide monitors is price. Typically, you’d have to spend around $ 650 to get a 34-inch screen with a 3,440 by 1,440 resolution. There are cheaper and smaller models out there, typically with a lower 2,560 by 1,080 resolution, but I wouldn’t recommend those since they have less workable screen space. If you really want a single screen to give you the benefits of a multi-monitor setup, an ultra-wide monitor is the way to go.

Kimbal Musk — Elon’s brother — predicts a movement of millennial workers fleeing desk jobs for farms https://briefnews.eu/kimbal-musk-elons-brother-predicts-a-movement-of-millennial-workers-fleeing-desk-jobs-for-farms/ https://briefnews.eu/kimbal-musk-elons-brother-predicts-a-movement-of-millennial-workers-fleeing-desk-jobs-for-farms/#respond Mon, 22 Jan 2018 18:30:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kimbal-musk-elons-brother-predicts-a-movement-of-millennial-workers-fleeing-desk-jobs-for-farms/ Square Roots 6338Sarah Jacobs

  • In an interview with Business Insider, Kimbal Musk said he sees a growing movement of young, highly educated people leaving their sedentary office jobs to become local and organic farmers.
  • The number of farmers under 35 years old is increasing, according to the US Department of Agriculture’s latest Census of Agriculture.
  • This new crop of young farmers will likely continue to bolster the local food movement across the United States.

After more than a decade working in tech, Kimbal Musk (brother of Elon) decided to lean into his true passion: local food. He now runs a chain of local food-focused restaurants called The Kitchen, as well as Big Green, a national nonprofit that builds educational gardens in public schools.

So it might not be surprising that he expects a growing number of young Americans to join him in the local farming movement.

When asked to name a big food trend looking forward into 2018, Musk said he sees millennials flocking to careers in agriculture rather than traditional office jobs.

“For the past 20 years, I think that technology has been a wonderful benefit for us in so many ways, but it’s not a very connected life. Social connectivity has really suffered because of technology. But we see urban farmers sell direct-to-consumer and be a part of their community,” he told Business Insider. “I see millennials leaving their office jobs to be in the urban farming community, because they get a connection back to their community.”

There is some data to back up Musk’s hunch. For only the second time in the last century, the number of farmers age 25 to 34 is increasing, according to the US Department of Agriculture’s latest Census of Agriculture. In some states, including California, Nebraska, and South Dakota, the number of new farmers has grown by 20% or more since 2007. Approximately 69% of these young farmers have college degrees — a figure that’s more than double when looking at the general US population.

Musk noticed this trend a few years ago, which is partly why he cofounded Square Roots — an indoor farming accelerator aimed at young Brooklynites — with friend and entrepreneur Tobias Peggs in 2016. The Square Roots compound consists of 10 steel shipping-container farms where farmers develop their indoor farming startups. Unlike traditional outdoor farms, vertical farms grow soil-free crops indoors and under LED lights.

Electra Jarvis, a 28-year-old college graduate who was part of the first Square Roots class, told BI that she went from academia to agriculture so that she could directly impact New York City’s local food system. She now manages her own vertical farming business called Green Food Solutions.

As The Washington Post notes, the migration of this new generation to farms could have a wide-reaching impact on the US food system. According to the USDA census, compared to older farmers, those under age 35 are more likely to grow organically, limit their fertilizer and pesticide use, and manage plots that are less than 50 acres. They are likely contributing to the recent decline in large-scale industrial farming.

“When people try real food, they don’t go back to industrial food. It just doesn’t taste good,” Musk said.
