It’s been 10 years since Steve Carell hosted Saturday Night Live, and in recent years, the actor hasn’t dabbled in comedy much. Instead, he’s spent time taking on more dramatic roles, so it was nice to see him get back into sketch comedy, even if the episode didn’t give him a whole lot to work with. But that’s not to say there aren’t some good laughs, even though most of the sketches don’t bring much to the table overall.

Let’s run through the best and worst sketches of the Steve Carell hosted Saturday Night Live below.

The Best

Space Station Broadcast – This was a great sketch full of outstanding physical comedy, hilarious sight gags, and a great job by Steve Carell going back and forth between being the calm and cool astronaut and freaking out when things go wrong. Also, Kate McKinnon as a frozen, floating cosmonaut was a great bit to close out on, but not as good as the imploded-faced cat.

’50s Sleepover – Remember that scene in Grease when Frankie Avalon tries to convince Frenchie to go back to high school instead of dropping out and enrolling in beauty school? Well, it gets sent up pretty fantastically in this sketch where the singer in question turns out to be the father of another teen girl at a ’50s sleepover. Aidy Bryant’s incredulous reaction to her estranged father being a dream sequence icon giving advice to teens really made this sketch great.

Message from Jeff Bezos – This sketch isn’t exactly laugh-out-loud, raucously hilarious, but the way Steve Carell calmly and coolly throws shade at Donald Trump through Amazon makes it work. It’s like a roast of Donald Trump that takes place in a library with Steve Carell as Lex Luthor.

When actor Rose McGowan doxxed someone by tweeting a private phone number last week, Twitter acted quickly to restrict her account until she deleted the tweet, which was in violation of the platform’s terms of service. But a BuzzFeed News analysis of thousands of tweets in the same timeframe, as well as thousands more a week later, shows that Twitter’s enforcement of doxxing bans is inconsistent at best.

Although the company was swift to crack down on McGowan’s account as she was discussing film producer Harvey Weinstein’s alleged sexual misconduct, it’s slower to act on less prominent users who break the same rule, which prohibits publicly tweeting someone’s private phone number.

Using Twitter’s Search API, we collected 10,000 tweets between October 9 and October 13 and found five that included people’s private phone numbers. All are still up. We also used Twitter’s Streaming API to collect tweets for eight hours on October 14, and for nine hours on October 16. Over that time period, we found 32 tweets containing phone numbers belonging to people other than the tweeter. On average, that’s roughly two private phone numbers per hour, and about 45 per day. Of these tweets, only five had been deleted by October 17, and only six had been deleted by October 19.

The examples we collected are just a small sample of tweets that violate Twitter’s rules, but still slip past the company’s enforcement tools. While BuzzFeed News focused its search on tweets containing private phone numbers, quick searches turned up tweets containing additional personally identifiable information for people other than the tweeter, including addresses and email addresses. Often, this information is posted on Twitter along with explicit calls to doxx the targets.

When BuzzFeed News reached out to three Twitter users whose numbers had been made public, two said they hadn’t reported the tweets because they wanted to give the doxxer time to take it down themselves, and the third said they hadn’t seen the tweets yet. We reported three doxxing tweets containing private numbers to Twitter on Monday, October 16. As of this article’s publication, two remain online.

We asked Twitter how it responds when users post others’ private information on its platform. A Twitter spokesperson stated, “We are constantly looking for opportunities to use Machine Learning to help make Twitter safer and will continue to leverage more ML/AI to improve the detection of content that violates our terms of service. As we announced last week, we are taking a more aggressive stance with our rules and how we enforce them. We’re moving quickly to make these updates and we will share more soon.”

Twitter has struggled with harassment for a decade, and it has long relied on algorithms and automated systems to enforce its rules. But the company and the algorithms it relies on have a tendency to overlook abuse on its platform, and Twitter often takes action only when the media publicly calls out an issue, or when prominent figures like Leslie Jones or McGowan are involved.

Over the past year, as Twitter has faced increasing pressure from the public to quash abuse on its platform, it has rolled out a series of harassment-combating tools and efforts, including more ways to report misconduct, keyword filters, muting abilities, and timeline tweaks that bury abusive tweets. Still, detecting abuse is not the same as effectively stopping it. Reporting by BuzzFeed News in the past year has uncovered hundreds of examples of harassment on Twitter; in many cases, when victims report the abusive tweets, Twitter dismisses the reports because it doesn’t consider them to be in violation of Twitter’s rules.

But the company seems to be doubling down on these tools, recently telling BuzzFeed News that it’s “focusing more on improving its abuse-filtering algorithms rather than hiring more humans.” And this week, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey publicly shared the company’s internal safety work streams and shipping calendar in an attempt to be more transparent with users about Twitter’s push to root out bad behavior.

In a blog post on Thursday, the company wrote, “We’re updating our approach to make Twitter a safer place. This won’t be a quick or easy fix, but we’re committed to getting it right. Far too often in the past we’ve said we’d do better and promised transparency but have fallen short in our efforts. Starting today, you can expect regular, real-time updates about our progress.” Upcoming efforts include plans to immediately suspend accounts that post non-consensual nude images and videos, an updated account suspension process, and bans on accounts that promote violence.

“Our bilateral cooperation is not frozen,” Mogherini told journalists on Monday. “My visit here is the most evident demonstration of that.”

“It is true that it is not any more what it used to be or what we would have liked it to be. For years, the European Union and Russia were working on the perspective of a strategic partnership. We would like to go back to a situation of that kind,” the EU foreign policy chief said, noting however that it “would be quite surreal to consider each other strategic partners and have sanctions.”

“Our sanctions are not an objective in themselves,” Mogherini insisted, citing the issue of the “full implementation of the Minsk Agreements by all sides” as a precondition for lifting EU sanctions against Moscow.

Lavrov however questioned the very logic of sanctioning Moscow for the alleged failure to comply with the Minsk Agreements, amid all Kiev’s attempts to sabotage the peace process.

“The apparent sabotage by the Kiev leadership of everything that is written in the Minsk Agreements should meet some reaction from those who patronize this government,” Lavrov noted, speaking alongside the EU foreign policy chief.

He pointed out that Ukraine “has been trying to change the agreements, radically rewrite them in order to achieve their goals, which may lead the process to a deadlock.”

Kiev has been “avoiding direct dialogue with Donetsk and Lugansk, although it is written in black on white in the Minsk documents,” he added, pointing out that the agreements similarly oblige the EU to influence the Ukrainian leadership.

“But, of course, if the position of the European Union is that everyone must fulfill their part of the obligations, the question arises: why sanctions exclusively against Russia?” Lavrov said.

The Russian Foreign Minister admitted that Russia and “the West are living through an uneasy period,” but emphasized that Moscow is “still aimed at restoring full-fledged cooperation with the European Union, our largest trade and economic partner.”

“We are open to go as far as you are ready to go,” he added, noting that sanctions is an “artificial problem” hampering a Moscow-EU partnership.

The EU foreign policy chief said the EU and Russia decided to work together a number of key issues, including counterterrorism and the situation in Syria.

“We’re ready to explore all possible fields of cooperation on the basis, as Sergey [Lavrov] mentioned, of a pragmatic assessment of our respective interests, and in many fields these interests coincide, both bilaterally, regionally and globally,” she said.

The Moscow exchange was “useful, constructive, positive, and for sure we will follow this up not only in the course of the day but also in the coming weeks and months,” Mogherini added.

“We’re determined to increase the level of coordination, cooperation, exploring possible ways in which Russia and the European Union can be useful in some of the crisis we are facing in the world of today. We live in difficult times, when not even one single inch or one single centimeter, to use European standards, of cooperation can be wasted or underestimated. So, we have the responsibility to do the utmost to find common ground, common solutions.”
