From the transformation of castles to shipping containers, Grand Designs has seen no shortage of iconic projects being taken on.

But, tonight’s episode of the Channel 4 programme will see a couple attempt a record-breaking build which is focused on a very heartfelt reason.

In the instalment, presenter Kevin McCloud MBE will meet gallery owner Elinor and fitness entrepreneur Born Barikor.

The pair, who have three children, are understandably concerned for their two young sons living with life threatening allergies – prompting their desire to build a “healthy” cause.

The incredible effort to build a safe and non-allergenic home came due to the two boys sugaring weekly allergy attacks.

As reported by the Daily Mail, their severe, potentially life threatening allergies, are to dairy, wheat, egg, gluten, soya, oats, pulses, beans and fruits, and nuts, not to mention, pollen and animal fur.

And, with their health being the priority, the family need to move in as a matter of urgency.

As a Grand Designs first, the two will attempt to build Britain’s first ever hypoallergenic house.

The incredible project includes plans for a part-submerged, shed-inspired property.

The design features the use of low toxin materials, as well as the incorporation of cutting edge filtration systems – in an attempt to clean the air the youngsters breathe.

However, the project will, unsurprisingly, not be without its difficulties.

Having chosen to base the build close to a hospital in South West London, their £765,000 garden plot will result in the couple facing time limited access.

With a deadline imposing, those onsite are likely to feel the pressure as they attempt to remove soil from the excavation of the property’s basement.

In order to carry out the impressive project, Elinor and Born will research almost every material and item thats involved in the build.

Making every effort to ensure the safety of the young boys, the pair will scrutinise everything to set foot across the threshold – including houseplants.

You’ll have to watch the episode to find out whether the family managed to achieve their goal of creating a hypoallergenic house.

A federal judge in Seattle issued an injunction today that blocks Defense Distributed from publishing its 3D-printed gun designs online. The move extends a temporary ban issued last month and the injunction will remain in place until a lawsuit brought forth by a number of state attorneys general is resolved. Washington, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Oregon, Maryland and Washington, DC signed onto the suit last month in an effort to reverse a US Department of State settlement that allowed the 3D gun designs to be published online. Eleven additional states joined the lawsuit earlier this month.

The fight to keep these sorts of gun designs off of the web has been going on for some time. Defense Distributed began publishing 3D-printed gun designs back in 2013, but was told to stop by the State Department for being in violation of the International Traffic in Arms Regulations. In 2015, the company then took the matter to court but a Texas district court and a US Court of Appeals both sided with the State Department. However, in a surprising about-face, the US government settled with Defense Distributed earlier this year, agreeing to allow the designs back online.

The attorneys general announced their lawsuit just ahead of when Defense Distributed said it would begin publishing its designs again. Bills have also since been introduced in the House of Representatives and the Senate aimed at blocking the sales. US District Judge Robert Lasnik said in his ruling today that the plaintiffs’ argument that the State Department didn’t follow the correct procedure when making changes to the US Munitions List per its settlement with Defense Distributed has merit.

“Today’s decision is an unqualified success for the American public and, indeed, the global community,” Avery Gardiner, co-president of the Brady Campaign, said in a statement. “3D-printed guns represent a supreme threat to our safety and security, and we are grateful that Judge Lasnik recognized it as such.”

Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson said, “Once again, I’m glad we put a stop to this dangerous policy. But I have to ask a simple question: why is the Trump administration working so hard to allow these untraceable, undetectable 3D-printed guns to be available to domestic abusers, felons and terrorists?”

A lawyer for Defense Distributed told Bloomberg that the firm is reviewing Judge Lasnik’s decision and will consider its options going forward.

But there’s been a big shift in fashion when it comes to their design.

Those with big budgets will still opt for traditional styles but others may consider the new trend for “glass box” rooms with sliding doors.

“They add value as they are far more flexible and useable year-round.” 

Carol adds that some conventional uPVC conservatories can actually put off buyers.

“This is a major change from 12 years ago when a conservatory was on people’s wish list and uPVC was often favoured for its durability.”

Steve Bromberg of Express Bi-folding Doors (0333 271 2147; expressbifolds.co.uk) says glass-box style rooms are becoming more popular and people are attempting to get more use out of them by retro-fitting solid roofs or replacing them with something more modern.

“Glass boxes are more contemporary and incorporating sliding and bi-folding doors allows for a more flexible space and better views out to the garden.”

How do you make a room look bigger? Many of us would like more space in our homes.

But even if you can’t afford a bigger property, you can easily create the illusion of more space through clever tricks.

Grand Designs’ Kevin McCloud explains that one simple trick could make your rooms look more spacious in just 30 seconds.

The trick involves the clever use of lighting to create an optical illusion. “More light equals a sense of space,” Kevin told Express.co.uk.

“If you have a table lamp or a floor light, point it upwards towards the ceiling,” he explained.

“If you can get as much light as possible on to the ceiling, it turns into a giant reflector.

“This creates ambient light based on shadows, which creates a relaxing effect,” he said.

Another way to bring in more light is to clean your windows which helps to get more light in the room.

“Just wash your blinking windows. Lots of people go for months with filthy windows.

“You get 30 per cent more light through if you wash them,” advised Kevin.

Light isn’t the only tip Kevin advised for making your home bigger, however.

He also advised a clever furniture buying trick to make your rooms feel bigger and give more physical space.

“There’s been a fashion in furniture for your sofas to be enormous great leather things,” he said.

However, he said smaller sofas can be a brilliant solution for those experiencing space issues.

“What property developers do to make homes look bigger is to buy smaller furniture, and it’s a great idea.

“You can buy a 50 per cent smaller sofa and still be just as comfortable,” he said.

Last year, Kevin McCloud revealed his favourite style of property exclusively to Express.co.uk.

He said: “If Grand Designs had been about in the 1800s it would have been great and I’d have been just as happy doing it.”

However, Kevin also saw the beauty in modern homes, and said whatever the type of property, he was excited by design.

He continued: “For me it’s all good stuff – I just get excited by the built and the made stuff.

“What I’ve never liked is cheap rubbish. What I find interesting is the best stuff, the crafted stuff, is often not that much more expensive.”

Brexit will have a number of effects on the UK property market, with some experts predicting house prices will fall.

However, Kevin McCloud, 58, of Grand Designs, has warned there may also be a construction “crisis” on the horizon after Brexit.

Brexit will happen on Friday 29 March 2019 at 11pm, according to an Article 50 deadline set by British Prime Minister Theresa May.

Kevin believes the process could leave Britons with a serious lack of skilled labourers, making house building and renovations extremely difficult.

“Brexit has a very negative side in that we have relied for the past 20 years on migrant labourers from Europe who build our homes.

Kevin said the United Kingdom is likely to lack “highly trained carpenters and masons” after Brexit.

He went on to speculate that we do not have the same workforce in the UK, and this only will get worse.

“We have failed our construction industry for the past 20 years by not training people,” he said.

“We have a generation leaving construction in their 50s and 60s, people who are really skilled, but we don’t have the people following on.”

He continued: “So we plug that gap, we masked that problem for the past 20 years by using really highly skilled people from all over Europe.

“That very high skill base is of people who have been trained in their own countries who are really expert.”

Kevin expressed a fear that many of these migrant labourers may be inclined to leave the country after the UK leaves the EU.

“I already meet contractors who are tearing their hair out because they cannot get the labour they need,” he said. “There’s a crisis in the labour market.”

Late last year, Kevin McCloud revealed his favourite type of property – which is also the one he likes to live in most.

He told Express.co.uk: “First and foremost I’m a buildings historian – so for me the old places have an amazing feel.

“If Grand Designs had been about in the 1800s it would have been great and I’d have been just as happy doing it.”

I have to admit that even as someone who’s fascinated by most insects, the earwig freaks me out. Upon seeing one, I’m typically too busy trying to squash it to notice any details about its anatomy. So it was a bit of a surprise to find out that not only do they have wings, but their wings are world record holders in a specific aspect of insect winginess: they take up the least space when folded compared to their extended size. The ratio between these states can reach as high as 18-to-one.

With that fact in mind, I was less surprised to find out that researchers have decided to study this bit of biology to see if they can derive any insights from what evolution has done with the earwig. In today’s issue of Science, there’s a report on what’s been learned by three researchers: Jakob Faber and André Studart of ETH Zurich and Andres Arrieta of Purdue University. They find that, to mimic the earwig’s wing, an origami-style folding approach won’t do. Instead, they’ve designed and 3D-printed a selection of meta-stable designs which, with a small input of energy, rapidly flip between folded and unfolded states.

When many people, including most materials scientists, think of folding, their first thought is origami. But the research team found that the earwig’s ” exquisite natural folding system” behaves in a way that “cannot be sufficiently described by current origami models.” Part of the issue is one of materials science: there are certain folding patterns in the wing that just can’t be done by creating a crease in a single material or using the straight lines of origami. In addition, the wing is bi-stable, holding itself in place during flight with minimal input from muscles and folding up entirely without any muscular energy being expended.
