During Designated Survivor Season 3, every time a person brings to President Kirkman’s attention a video of a citizen’s testimonial, what he watches is never an actor reading from a script but actual documentary footage. Some of the topics covered throughout the 10-episode season (now available on Netflix) include opioid addiction and the exorbitant cost of life-sustaining medicines such as insulin. “A mother whose child died of diabetes, people addicted to opioids, people who were in a transgender therapy group…. It’s always real,” Season 3 showrunner Neal Baer tells TVLine of the video clips. “When there are people saying to Kirkman why they don’t vote [in the previous presidential election], those are non-actors telling us why they didn’t vote.” Describing the incorporation of documentary footage into an episodic series as something that is “very different,” Baer explains, “When I was first starting out, I did a pilot with John Wells in 1991 called Night Life, which integrated documentary footage with people who work all night. It was ultimately not picked up by NBC, but I’ve had this bug in my ear ever since.” “I haven’t met one person who knows that the child marriage rate in the United States is sort of equal to what’s going on in Saudi Arabia,” says Baer. “That was why that episode is about assumptions, like, ‘Oh, my gosh, it must be worse,’ and actually it’s not. These are all real facts and figures that are supported by the data we have.” Baer in fact shared said data with series consultant Eric Schultz, who served as Deputy Press Secretary under President Obama, asking why the issue never grabbed a real-life White House’s attention. “Eric said, ‘It wasn’t on our radar.’ I showed him the figures, and he’s like, ‘Whoa. It wasn’t on our radar.’” Even if it had been on the White House’s radar, implementing policy to change things, as illustrated on Designated Survivor, would prove problematic and face some surprising opposition. “As [Director of Social Innovation] Isobel says, two of the most liberal organizations, ACLU and Planned Parenthood, were against it,” Baer notes. “And that’s all true. That is all out of California.” Leslie Odom Jr. is turning ABC into the room — er, network — where it happens. The Tony-winning actor (Broadway’s Hamilton) is set to star in and executive-produce an untitled comedy series at the Alphabet network, inspired by real-life couple Pastor Touré Roberts and Pastor Sarah Jakes Roberts, who preach at a Los Angeles church. The potential series, which has received a put-pilot commitment from ABC, will center on Leslie (played by Odom Jr.) and Hope, joint pastors at a young, hip, diverse L.A. church. Through their services, online streams and books, they are experts at uniting people across different races, genders, orientations and opinions. But when it comes to uniting the people in their blended family, they are way out of their comfort zone. Well… * Elena Tovar (General Hospital) will recur on Season 3 of the recently rescued Designated Survivor as Isabel, the White House’s director of social innovation, per Deadline. * Freeform is developing Joyland, a drama series based on the 2013 Stephen King novel of the same name. The project focuses on Devin Jones, a college student who takes a summer job at the titular North Carolina amusement park and must confront the legacy of a vicious murder and the fate of a dying child. * Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek and Wheel of Fortune duo Pat Sajak and Vanna White all have renewed their contracts with Sony Pictures Television through 2022. * CBS on Wednesday launched ET Live, a free, 24/7 streaming network that serves as a companion to the on-air Entertainment Tonight broadcast. According to Deadline, her first episode will air in 2019. It appears there has been a recount! As foreshadowed by our August 13 Blind Item, the Kiefer Sutherland drama Designated Survivor — cancelled last May at ABC — has been resurrected by Netflix, with the streamer ordering a 10-episode Season 3. Netflix confirmed the news late Wednesday, while also announcing that Neal Baer (Law & Order: SVU, Under the Dome) has taken over showrunner duties. This marks the series’ fourth showrunner change in two years. To recap: Amy B. Harris (Wicked City) originally served as showrunner on the series (which was created by David Guggenheim), only to be replaced in May 2016 upon its official pickup, with Jon Harmon Feldman (Blood & Oil). Feldman left in the middle of Season 1, and was succeeded by Jeff Melvoin (Army Wives). And then in May 2017, it was announced that The Good Wife grad Keith Eisner would take the reins for Season 2. In last May’s Season 2 finale, Sutherland’s President Kirkman announced a bid for re-election, catching his staff quite, but pleasantly, off-guard. When Season 3 picks up, Kirkman “will face a political reality — campaigning,” per the official logline supplied by Netflix. “What does it take to make a leader? What price will he be willing to pay? Democracy, as we know it, will hang in the balance.” This new season will also “explore today’s world of campaigning, smear tactics, debates, campaign finance and ‘fake news.’”
In a statement, Sutherland said, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to play President Kirkman for Season 3 of Designated Survivor on Netflix… I believe this format will allow us to continue to delve deeply into storylines and issues concerning the American electorate that were not previously possible.” Added EP Mark Gordon: “The continuation of the show via Netflix is a win-win for all involved. The story of President Kirkman and those around him has not been fully told and we look forward to working with our new partner in continuing the show for a global audience.” Designated Survivor Season 3 is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2019. Thoughts on Designated Survivor‘s death-defying return? Do you think the series will fare better with a shorter episode order? This week on Designated Survivor, in its Season 2 and, at very least, ABC series finale, Tom Kirkman’s administration stepped in it yet again, casting even more doubt on the future of his presidency. But as the series cut to black, was change in the air?RELATED STORIES
Episode 1 of the new season ends with Kirkman bingeing a slew of videos from generally disenfranchised Americans. From there the videos get more specific, starting in Episode 2 with an American woman who tearfully describes her sexual assault as a 13-year-old bride. Building off of a public relations snafu in which Kirkman unwittingly posed with a Saudi and his child bride (assuming the girl was a daughter), the episode proceeds to expose hard truths, including how child marriage is legal in all of the United States but two (Delaware and New Jersey).

Elsewhere in the episode:
* After her ex parte misstep, Emily turned in her resignation, sensing that she is holding on too tight to her job, and in doing so making bad calls that get in POTUS’ way; Kirkman begrudgingly accepted her decision, but assured her she always has a place at his side.
* Seth and socially inept Lyor realized they had bonded as friends during the tsunami ordeal, where a humble Seth apparently helped save a family by carrying the kids to the building roof.
* Leo got accepted into Georgetown, greatly pleasing his father, but he also got into Stanford, he confided in Emily. Leo later came clean to his father, including about his preference — but Tom already knew, having the university president on one of his committees. Leo kept quiet because he worries about leaving his father alone in Washington, after all they’ve been through, but Tom urges his son to chase his dreams.
* Hannah tracked down Damien’s daughter Amy, who tried to dodge the spook at first until she proved herself trustworthy. Amy shared that her father kept a secret safe, but they discovered it was now empty. Luckily, Amy has an photographic memory and can recite the five pages of names/addresses that had been stashed inside — a “knock list” of British operatives and their posts. Hannah uses the intel/Amy to draw out Valera, with whom she eventually gets into a scuffle/chase. Hannah emerges with the upper hand and declares that she is bringing in her adversary, but Valera maintains that an ex-FBI agent has no authority abroad. Hannah answers that by putting a few bullets into Valera, before fishing from her jacket pocket a flash drive. On it, Hannah realizes — as she escorts her new “ward” Amy home to the States — is video of Valera making a furtive exchange with… Emily Rhodes?!

Last week brought dozens of cancellations by TV networks clearing the path for new shows hitting the air for the new 2018-2019 television season. Brooklyn Nine-Nine was lucky enough to be saved with a last minute renewal, and now one more has been given a new lease on life after being canceled.
Designated Survivor is an ABC drama following Kiefer Sutherland as Tom Kirkman, a lower-level cabinet member in the United States government who is suddenly appointed President of the United States after a catastrophic attack on the US Capitol during the State of the Union. With his new responsibilities, he had to keep the country and his own family from falling apart, while navigating the highly-volatile political arena and while leading the search to find who is responsible for the attack.
The series lasted just two seasons before being canceled by ABC last week, but now production company eOne is in talks with Netflix about the political thriller getting picked up for another season. However, it’s not a done deal yet.
Deadline has news on the possibility of Designated Survivor being renewed at Netflix. The talks about picking the show up from ABC are early, and there’s one complication making it a little difficult. Netflix’s competitor Hulu has the streaming rights to the first two seasons of the series in the United States. That means if they want the show to be successful in the US, they would probably need to pay Hulu for the rights to those first two seasons. Thankfully for Netflix, they already have the global streaming rights for Designated Survivor.
However, it sounds like Netflix isn’t the only place that Designated Survivor might get revived. A statement from eOne indicates that they are “in active discussions with other parties for further series of the show.” So if Netflix can’t get those US streaming rights from Netflix, that doesn’t mean the show is dead in the water.
But other difficulties might continue to plague the series.

Whenever a series on network TV gets canceled, it’s usually because the ratings are too low for the show to be profitable for both the network and the advertisers that keep programming on the air. While ratings certainly played a part in the cancellation of Designated Survivor, it sounds like there are other problems behind the scenes that could still be an issue.
First of all, Variety reported the ratings in the second season of the show dropped quite a bit. While the first season pulled in 12.1 million viewers and a 2.9 live Nielsen rating in the key demographic among adults 18-49, the second season dropped to 8.6 million viewers and 1.7 rating in adults 18-49. But the show was still doing pretty well on the delayed viewing numbers, which makes it desirable for Netflix.
Beyond ratings though, Designated Survivor has had a problem holding on to showrunners. In just two seasons, the series went through four showrunners, and producers had already hired Neal Baer to become their fifth showrunner for the show’s third season (before it was canceled). If the series gets picked up for a third season somewhere, it’s like that Baer will come with it.
But the showrunner issue has created another problem with the show’s star. The revolving door of showrunners has been frustrating to Kiefer Sutherland, who wasn’t a fan of the change in creative direction that came with each new showrunner. While the series began as more of a political drama about the struggles of taking over the role of President after a terrorist attack takes out the entire presidential cabinet, it has become more of a drama about the difficulty of living in the White House with a family to maintain.
On top of that, Kiefer Sutherland’s contract for the third season called for the series to move production into Los Angeles instead of Toronto. That was going to make the show more expensive for the network to produce. But that’s the kind of cost that a home like Netflix wouldn’t balk at. In fact, it might give more freedom to Designated Survivor to venture out beyond its network limitations.
If Designated Survivor gets picked up, it’ll be good news for the cast, which also includes Natasha McElhone, Adan Canto, Italia Ricci, LaMonica Garrett, Tanner Buchanan, Kal Penn, Maggie Q and Paulo Costanzo. But more importantly, it will keep the crew employed too. Stay tuned to see how this all pans out.

The decision to cancel Designated Survivor was not purely ratings-driven, per ABC president Channing Dungey. During a conference call with reporters Tuesday, the exec cited the series’ anemic “live” ratings as only part of the Kiefer Sutherland drama’s woes.
“Creatively, we’ve had a lot of behind-the-scenes churn on the show in terms of the number of showrunners involved,” she noted. “We were less confient with the creative path forward than the other shows we brought back.”
Designated Survivor underwent three significant backstage shake-ups during its brief, two-season run. Amy B. Harris (Wicked City) originally served as showrunner on the series (which was created by David Guggenheim), only to be replaced in May 2016 upon its official pickup, with Jon Harmon Feldman (Blood & Oil). Feldman left in December, and was succeeded by Jeff Melvoin (Army Wives). And then The Good Wife grad Keith Eisner stepped in to run Season 2.
Averaging a 0.7 demo rating and 4 million total weekly viewers thus far this season (in Live+Same Day numbers), Designated Survivor ranks ninth and seventh among all ABC dramas, having dropped sharply from its freshman averages (1.2/5.8 million).
Designated Survivor series finale airs Wednesday at 10/9c.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Designated Survivor seasons 1 and 2.
Netflix’s season two of Designated Survivor reached a dramatic mid-season finale with a devastating death that will set tee tone for part two of the season.
The ABC production is about a low level US cabinet member who is suddenly appointed as President after a horrific terrorist attack kills everyone else above him in government.
Kiefer Sutherland stars in the main role as new President Tom Kirkman.
Season two began with President still coping with suddenly becoming the most powerful politician in the world whilst still trying to figure who is responsible for the attack on the Capitol Building which killed most of the government.
President Kirkman was pushed to his limit in the first half of season one with several national security threats and a murder investigation involving his wife, the First Lady (played by Natascha McElhone).
Fans were shocked when First Lady Alex was killed in a car accident in episode 10 and as of yet it is unclear whether it was an accident or not.
Show bosses have confirmed that the show will pick up with Tom Kirkman dealing with his tragic loss, and learning how to be both the President and a single parent in light of extreme political pressure and personal grief.
Kiefer Sutherland will reprise his role as President Thomas Kirkman but fans are devastated that Natascha McElhone won’t be back as the First Lady.
However, other cast members starring in season two include Paulo Costanzo as White House Political Director Lyor Boone, Italia Ricci as White House Chief of Staff Emily Rhodes and Divergent actress Maggie Q as Hannah Wells.
Fan favourite Kal Penn will be starring as White House Press Secretary Seth Wright. The Harold and Kumar actor is in politics in real life, having served as the Associate Director in the White House Office of Public Engagement under the Obama administration.
A major new addition to the cast for season two is none other than Michael J Fox. The Back to the Future star is set to play Ethan West, a well-connected Washington DC attorney appointed to investigate information leaks in the White House.
Fans of The Good Wife will be pleased by this development as Fox starred as a lawyer, earning him three Emmy nominations.
Designated Survivor will return to Netflix for the second half of season two on Wednesday, February 28.
It airs 24 hours earlier in the US on ABC.
Designated Survivor will continue on Netflix on Wednesday, February 28.
