Apple Quest Monsters DX is a book of charming monsters and their descriptions, all for a game that does not exist. Not that this mattered for Splendidland, developer of Tender Caves of Death, as this look at monsters detached from a game carried that sense of discovery that came with cracking open strategy guides for Earthbound, Banjo Kazooie, and more, creating a digital space within the reader’s mind that called up imaginary game worlds.

“I used to love reading strategy guides for games I never got to play, so why not make a guide for a game nobody has played? I loved the guide of Banjo Kazooie because it had so many different characters, and I still haven’t played that game!” says Splendidland.

Guided Worlds

A strategy guide, or a feature in an issue of Nintendo Power, often came with unique artwork and character descriptions for the games they covered. While these were meant to be informative on the games they covered or to help flesh out a narrative, there was still a creativity, curiosity, and excitement contained within the artwork and words alone. Arguably designed to help make playing a game easier, these guides were still made with a love for storytelling and play that made the guides themselves fun all on their own.

This is the spirit Splendidland looked to capture with Apple Quest Monsters DX. “I love monster bestiaries! I read the Pokedex in Pokemon Yellow so much as a kid that I could memorize the cries of each monster. I am developing a game called Tender Caves of Death that also features a monster encyclopedia, but it’s going to take a while to finish, so I wanted to make something where I don’t actually have to program a game around them.”

There is a sense of getting to know these digital places that is captured within the pages of the book, and whether the reader ever gets to go there, a familiarity is built through looking at the artwork and maps while reading the descriptions. What manner of place would have creatures like these? How would they move? It kickstarts the imagination and helps create a sense of place within the reader’s mind whether they play the game or not.

For some, this can even replace the playing of the game altogether, letting them experience the game through text and visuals without any input. “RPGs are typically quite lengthy, and I think there’s a lot of people who want to have the feeling of playing one without the time investment, that was one of the feelings I hoped to capture with the book,” says Splendidland.

Guides and features can give the reader that sense of having been there, or of learning of a place in a way that carries a different kind of joy all its own. Splendidland tapped into this sensation with Apple Quest Monsters DX, letting the reader feel as if they’re transported to an RPG they can play through in their imaginations.

Monsters Beyond

What thoughts go into creating the monsters for a game that doesn’t exist? In telling a game world’s story without the game world itself?

It was something that felt comfortable for the developer. “I’ve played video games since I was 6, and it was the medium I found the most compelling, so my art has always been inspired by video games,” says Splendidland.

“I feel like the most important thing is for them to all be memorable in some way. The Dragon Quest series is well known for its unique designs even though a lot of the enemies are things like ‘Slime’ and ‘Skeleton’ and ‘Golem’,” says Splendidland. “When I designed the monsters, I had a little grid, with all the Type and Habitat combinations, and I came up with one monster for each, trying to make them appropriate while also including a lot of variation. The puppet type of the plains habitat is a robot simply because I wanted to have a robot, and it seemed like the best place for one!”

The look wasn’t the only key part in making Apple Quest Monsters DX‘s monsters feel like they had a game world to belong in, as their descriptions, which laid out the monsters’ personalities, were a large part in making them feel like they belonged in their own digital worlds.

“I tried to give each monster their own personality as well! A lot of people loved certain monsters not because of their design, but their accompanying flavour text being what the kids would call ‘a big mood’. The Zombie monster mentions having dysphoria because it can’t stand the appearance of its rotting body. I think small details like that go a long way to making even a generic monster more interesting,” says Splendidland.

1BgM2f.png

These descriptions went beyond giving the monsters an identity, but also established an overall sense of this imaginary world’s mood. The Slime is described as “It’s the weakest of all monsters, but don’t let that stop you from loving it,”. The Power Beetles boss “always compliment each other to boost their self-esteem.” They give the monsters these hopeful, cheery identities, but also bring to mind a world that is hopeful and helpful. Their descriptions immediately call up thoughts on the world they would live in, and help the reader establish more about them on top of their cute designs.

A final step, one familiar to those who’ve ever enjoyed the Earthbound strategy guide, was to give the monsters their own real interpretations. Seeing these adorable beasts brought into reality offers this sense of touch that makes them feel more realistic, in a sense, and may bring back memories of flipping through that particular guide and seeing these creatures in vibrant color and touchable material.

“I was actually just going to paint the cover or make it pixel art. The models were a last-minute decision that probably delayed the books release by a month! I’ve always loved making models, and this is my first book, so I wanted to make it special! My favourite game, Wario Land 3, also had a physical model of the music box the game takes place in on the cover, and I was always so enamoured by it!” says Splendidland.

Not that this decision was motivated by nostalgia for that old guidebook. “I never had a SNES, and even if I did, Earthbound wasn’t released in the UK. I didn’t get to read the guide until long after I’d already played the game on emulator, but what a guide it is! You could just read that instead of playing the game (though you should play the game anyway because it’s good for your soul),” says Splendidland.

Still, this final step created a connection to reality and color that makes the monsters seem to spring to life in Apple Quest Monsters DX, their cheerful looks creating a sense of adventure and play. Within the creatures’ designs, we can get a sense of their places within the world, and are captivated by the details that make them stand out. Likewise, Splendidland’s cheerful style runs through each, creating that sense of cohesive identity and place that ties them all together, and their descriptions give them, and the world, a further sense of personality. In reading this, we know a digital place, even if it isn’t real.

A Game In the Mind

For those who ever leafed through a guide book for a game they didn’t own, how much did it truly matter if they never got to play that game? Did they not find joy in that world in their own way, or get a sense of knowing the place and having seen it in their imaginations? Our games are but constructs of code assisted by our imaginations in becoming real, so a guide for a game that isn’t real isn’t necessarily a leap. As such, using artwork, style, text, and physical models, Splendidland captured that feeling of knowing a place through game guides and features – of reading and seeing a world to life.

Apple Quest Monsters DX is available for £10.00 through Splendidland’s online store, or £2.50 for a digital copy on Itch.io. For more information on the book and the developer, you can follow them on Twitter.

This December Danny Boyle’s 25 starts shooting at Pinewood Studios.

However apart from Craig, the film’s title, plot and cast remain very much a mystery.

But now Bond site have come across a casting call for Bond 25’s main villain, a female role – likely a Bond girl – and a henchman.

The same source accurately provided the casting call for Dave Bautista’s Hinx for Spectre, so it looks like this information can be trusted. See the description below.

Male Leading Role

Playing age: 30’s – 60’s

Russian. (Also open to suggestions of actors from the Balkans or similar) Must speak fluent English.

Characteristics: Charismatic, Powerful, Innovative, Cosmopolitan, Bright, Cold and Vindictive.

Female Leading Role

Playing age: 30 – 45

Russian. (Also open to suggestions of actresses from the Balkans or similar) Must speak fluent English.

Very Striking. Strong Physical / fighting / stage combat skills required.

Male Supporting Role

Playing age: 35 – 55

Maori.

It seems Bond will be facing the Russians this time around and the female lead is apparently likely to be the male villain’s partner and a possible Bond girl.

Nevertheless recent rumours have claimed the and Angelina Jolie circling the roles.

Of course the character could turn out to be the real baddie, as was the shock twist with Electra King in The World Is Not Enough.

Meanwhile Benedict Cumberbatch and Mark Strong could potentially play the male Russian villain.

New ‘Stranger Things 3’ Character Descriptions Surface https://briefnews.eu/new-stranger-things-3-character-descriptions-surface/ https://briefnews.eu/new-stranger-things-3-character-descriptions-surface/#respond Mon, 26 Feb 2018 00:40:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/new-stranger-things-3-character-descriptions-surface/ Stranger Things 3 New Characters

When Stranger Things 2 debuted on Netflix last fall, the memorable cast of characters from the first season of the sci-fi horror series was joined be several new, key characters. The likes of Sean Astin, Brett Gelman, Dacre Montgomery, Sadie Sink and Paul Reiser expanded the world of Stranger Things and each character was key to the latest peculiar happenings in Hawkins, Indiana.

Therefore it should come as no surprise that Stranger Things 3 will be bringing several new characters into the fray. Descriptions of a few of the new players have come to light, and they provide some hints of where the story will head and what movies might influence the third season of the Netflix series. So who are these Stranger Things 3 new characters?

Details on these Stranger Things 3 new characters comes from That Hashtag Show. Their track record can be hit or miss, but this kind of information is usually what makes the rounds to various talent agencies, management companies and casting companies, so it’s likely fairly accurate. There are three new characters their source has learned about, though it’s noted that the character names may only be placeholders and might change during production. Here they are:

“Mayor Larry Kline” – A classic, 80’s style slick politician. Pathetic and driven only by his own interests. The studio is looking for a male, aged from 40s-60s, to fill the role.

“Bruce” – A morally compromised news reporter in his 50s. Outwardly sexist, overweight and bedraggled.

“Patricia Brown” – A sweet, neighborhood elder in her 70s who will spend a lot of time tending to her garden and offering her advice to the neighborhood kids.

The mayor role is an interesting one, because it implies the supernatural problem unfolding in Hawkins, Indiana is getting big enough that the upper echelons of the city’s government is starting to get involve. Considering his character’s description, this sounds like we might be dealing with a Jaws mayor situation where he doesn’t do what’s in the best interest of the town. In fact, he might end up being in the back pocket of Hawkins Power and Light, the front for the Department of Energy’s branch of experiments with the Upside Down at Hawkins National Laboratory.

Meanwhile, Bruce sounds like he might make an adversary for Murray Bauman, the private investigator played by Brett Gelman in Stranger Things 2. If Bruce is morally compromised, then he might be contradicting all of the conspiracy details about Hawkins National Laboratory that he, Nancy and Jonathan sent tot he Chicago Sun-Times.

Finally, Patricia Brown seems like an innocent enough character. Maybe she’s one of the few adults who listens to the kids when they experience more supernatural events. Then again, As That Hashtag Show predicts, maybe she’s a character who will seem like an ally but turns out to be ingrained in the conspiracy by keeping an eye on the kids.

Outside of this new information, we don’t know much about Stranger Things 3 yet. We know the season will have eight episodes, and it will be a little more weird and character-based. However, we might not see it debut until 2019. Stay tuned for more updates soon.

Star Wars 8 The Last Jedi LEAK: New descriptions reveal PLOT SPOILERS? https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-8-the-last-jedi-leak-new-descriptions-reveal-plot-spoilers/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-8-the-last-jedi-leak-new-descriptions-reveal-plot-spoilers/#respond Tue, 21 Nov 2017 00:26:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-8-the-last-jedi-leak-new-descriptions-reveal-plot-spoilers/

With less than a month to go until the release of Star Wars The Last Jedi, much of the plot is still very much under-wraps.

However a new set of supposed LEGO set descriptions have leaked, with a couple revealing what could be major scenes in the upcoming movie.

Spotted by Flickering Myth, the info appeared on Eurobricks, a LEGO fan forum.

Here are the descriptions, which should be taken with a pinch of salt.

75195 – Ski Speeder vs. First Order Walker –  Defeat the First Order’s Storm Walker with the help of a super-speeder equipped with skis! Plant the pilot of the resistance spider and the First Order troopers in their cabins, ready the guns and get set for an exciting adventure. The set also includes a small shelter with additional weapons and ammunition for even more exciting battles!

75916 – A-Wing vs. TIE Silencer –  Play out the space battle between the Kyle Ren TIE Fighter and the A-Wing Fighter of the Resistance! Plant the minifigures in the cabins of their ships, load rockets on board and start the fight. The set also includes a mini-station for repairing ships. Good luck, warrior!

75197 – First Order Specialists – Send reinforcements – it’s the combat set of First Order specialists! Let the First Order gunner take his place, then ready the gun and aim. Guard the weapons with the tough stormtroopers of the First Order, armed with laser axes. Can you defeat the Resistance? All in your hands!

75200 – Ahch-To Island Training – Go along with Rey in search of a hut on the mountainside on one of the islands of the planet Ahch-To! Teach her to use a lightsaber and try to destroy a stone boulder. Sit back by the fire and learn more about the Jedi Order, and then spend the night in order to sleep well before the new training day.

75201 – First Order AT-ST ATV – Help Finn, Rose and BB-8 to capture the unfinished AT-ST! Jump to the suspended lift and climb onto the walker. Turn the steering wheel to deploy the gun, and control the walking pylons to start moving. Lead with fire to retreat to a safe place where you can hold out until reinforcements arrive! Can Captain Phasma stop our heroes before they manage to escape? Their fate is in your hands!

75202 – Defense of Crait – Prepare the Ski Speeder to battle for the Resistance base against the forces of the First Order! Send the soldier to the laser cannon and other tools installed in the trench, and carefully monitor the movements of the enemy from the command tower. Set the guns on the Ski Speeders and check the serviceability of the engine. When the enemy approaches the base, put Poe in the cockpit and send him to perform another difficult mission. Fight for victory to the last, brave Resistance soldiers!

While much of the alleged descriptions are just scenes spoken about generally, there are a few nuggets that stand out.

Why is Rey searching for a specific hut? Has it got something to do with the Force tree?

And it looks like Finn, Rose and BB-8 will be stealing an AT-ST to take on the Force Order – presumably near the end of the film as they need to escape.

Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi will be released in UK cinemas on December 14, 2017.

Star Wars Bits: A Petition to Remove J.J. Abrams, ‘Rebels’ Season 4 Episode Descriptions, The History of The Falcon, and More https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-bits-a-petition-to-remove-j-j-abrams-rebels-season-4-episode-descriptions-the-history-of-the-falcon-and-more/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-bits-a-petition-to-remove-j-j-abrams-rebels-season-4-episode-descriptions-the-history-of-the-falcon-and-more/#respond Sun, 01 Oct 2017 08:29:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-bits-a-petition-to-remove-j-j-abrams-rebels-season-4-episode-descriptions-the-history-of-the-falcon-and-more/ JJ Abrams Interview

In this edition of Star Wars Bits:

  • A petition is circulating that intends to get J.J. Abrams fired from directing Star Wars: Episode 9
  • Ron Howard is tweeting a lot from the set of Han Solo
  • Star Wars Rebels season 4 gets a slick poster and the first episode descriptions have been unveiled
  • The history of the Millennium Falcon is explored in a new video
  • A new look at Star Wars Battlefront II, featuring an intro by John Boyega
  • And much more!

abrams pic

Some Star Wars “fans” have started a fruitless petition to remove J.J. Abrams as the director of Episode IX. It is pretty ridiculous, and unless they have $ 2 billion to spend on removing him, we’re gonna go ahead and say this is a waste of everyone’s time. But good on TVOvermind for analyzing it anyway.

Mark Hamill was honored by GQ this year, and his interview shows how much he still loves Star Wars and the fans. He loves the line, “I have a bad feeling about this,” and can rock a space cape like a boss. Watch all the way through for his tease about the set of Canto Bight, the casino; he says he’s “never been on a set that opulent,” but we’re not 100% sure that means his character is actually in a scene on that set.

Hey, did you guys know Ron Howard has been posting pictures from the set of Han Solo on Twitter and Instagram? Man, when this movie wraps this column is suddenly going to be half as long. Anyway, here’s a cool, dark shot with some people rocking helmets in the background. But what kind of helmets?

Palpatine

Will Ian McDiarmid ever play Palpatine/The Emperor again? With the “Dark Times” era seemingly the only timeframe the “Star Wars Story” movies are willing to explore, at least for now, there’s a chance, and if McDiarmid has anything to say about it no one else is taking the power of the dark side from him.

“Maybe they are keeping me as a surprise for later but I have no idea. Of course, I don’t want anyone else to play him,” the actor told BBC. It’d be nice to see him cut loose one more time.

Yes, Star Wars Battlefront II is just looking better and better. John Boyega, who of course stars in the films as Finn, was an outspoken critic of the first game and its lack of a single-player campaign, which EA is now using to their advantage. Way to turn that around, folks! In this video, he details all the new features in the sequel, and man, it’s looking more and more like this will be played just constantly when it debuts on November 17, 2017.

Hey, did you guys know Ron Howard has been posting pictures from the set of Han Solo on Twitter and Instagram? Emilia Clarke has wrapped her run on the film as an unnamed character in an unnamed movie. But she looks happy, and has bangs. Space bangs.

Here’s a very nearly complete look at the current #StarWars canon!

A post shared by Silas Lesnick (@silaslesnick) on Sep 24, 2017 at 1:38pm PDT

Friend of the site (and good dude) Silas Lesnick has been avidly collecting the current canon Star Wars novels and comics. As he says this is a nearly complete look, in chronological order. If you’re behind, well, get to reading!

Speaking of timelines, here’s everything we know so far about the First Order and how they rose over the 30 years or so between Episodes 6 and 7. It’s a pretty comprehensive look of the story so far (what there is of it), but we’ll learn a lot more when Battlefront II comes out and we play Iden Versio’s story, which spans across generations.

Hey, did you guys know Ron Howard has been posting pictures from the set of Han Solo on Twitter and Instagram? (Comedy in threes, ladies and gents!) This Ralph McQuarrie font was designed for Yavin IV – but don’t expect Han Solo to be heading to the planet in this film. From what little we know about the timeline, it’s a good decade before the Rebels had established a base there. Find out more about what that text means here.

‘Twin Peaks’ Season 3 Episode Descriptions Are Cryptic and Weird and…Lynchian https://briefnews.eu/twin-peaks-season-3-episode-descriptions-are-cryptic-and-weird-andlynchian/ https://briefnews.eu/twin-peaks-season-3-episode-descriptions-are-cryptic-and-weird-andlynchian/#respond Thu, 18 May 2017 10:47:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/twin-peaks-season-3-episode-descriptions-are-cryptic-and-weird-andlynchian/ Twin Peaks season 3 Episode Descriptions

We’re only a few days away from the wildly-anticipated return of Twin Peaks, but we’re still largely in the dark about what the revived series will actually contain. More of Kyle MacLachlan’s FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper? Absolutely, but even something as seemingly simple as that is tinged with a spoilery caveat I won’t get into now. Will we see another murder in the small Northwestern town? Almost certainly. But beyond that, it’s been nothing but tumbleweeds out there when it comes to plot details.

But some new descriptions of the first eight episodes have just surfaced, and in typical Twin Peaks fashion, they’re intriguingly – and almost frustratingly – mysterious.

The AV Club pointed us to the fan site WelcomeToTwinPeaks, which tracked down some descriptions from Showtime’s website. Before we jump into those, it’s worth noting that Peaks co-creator David Lynch is directing every installment of the revived series (as he should be!), and that he considers the new Twin Peaks to be an eighteen-hour film that’s being spooled out in “parts” instead of a traditional television season broken up into eighteen episodes. That ought to make for some…interesting structuring to this season, but in any case, let’s dive into the descriptions of the first eight parts.

Part 1: My log has a message for you.
Part 2: The stars turn and a time presents itself.
Part 3: Call for help.
Part 4: …brings back some memories.
Part 5: Case files.
Part 6: Don’t die.
Part 7: There’s a body all right.
Part 8: Gotta light?

Among those descriptions, only one thing seems like a sure bet: part 1 should feature the return of Catherine E. Coulson’s mysterious Log Lady dispensing valuable information to someone in need. Further speculation: “The stars turn and a time presents itself” could reference an alignment that could hint at the opening of the portal to the Black (and White) Lodge, which might link to the last time we saw Cooper in the season 2 finale. “Case files” could be a good place to reintroduce FBI Regional Bureau Chief Gordon Cole (played by Lynch himself).

But the rest of these are so purposefully cryptic that it’s impossible to know what Lynch has in store. And frankly, that unpredictability is a huge part of the joy of the series in the first place, so I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Twin Peaks returns to television with a two-part season premiere this Sunday night on Showtime, and episodes three and four will be available on demand right afterward. Those episodes will then air the following Sunday, and the show will settle into a routine of airing a single episode per week until its two-part season finale on September 3, 2017.

Widely considered one of the most groundbreaking and influential broadcast series of all time, TWIN PEAKS followed the inhabitants of a quaint northwestern town who were stunned after their homecoming queen Laura Palmer was shockingly murdered. The town’s sheriff welcomed the help of FBI agent Dale Cooper, who came to town to investigate the case. As Cooper conducted his search for Laura’s killer, the town’s secrets were gradually exposed. The mystery that ensued set off an eerie chain of events that plunged the inhabitants of Twin Peaks into a darker examination of their very existence. Twenty-five years later, the story continues…

YouTube wants you to translate video descriptions https://briefnews.eu/youtube-wants-you-to-translate-video-descriptions/ https://briefnews.eu/youtube-wants-you-to-translate-video-descriptions/#respond Sat, 01 Apr 2017 18:44:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/youtube-wants-you-to-translate-video-descriptions/

YouTube has had community-sourced subtitle translations since 2015, but they’re only useful if people can find the videos in the first place… what about labeling the videos? You now have a chance to help. The internet video service has expanded its Community Contributions to let you translate video titles and descriptions, not just captions. If you think a video in your preferred language would be helpful elsewhere in the world, you don’t have to ask the clip creator to do you a favor.

The user-powered tools could be important to spreading YouTube’s international reach. There are 76 languages in use on the site, but those groups exist in relative isolation from each other. You probably won’t search for videos in Korean if you only know Hindi, for instance. If all goes well, the community translations will expose you to a raft of videos that you’d otherwise have never seen, regardless of your native tongue.

YouTube now lets creators crowdsource translations for titles and descriptions https://briefnews.eu/youtube-now-lets-creators-crowdsource-translations-for-titles-and-descriptions/ https://briefnews.eu/youtube-now-lets-creators-crowdsource-translations-for-titles-and-descriptions/#respond Thu, 30 Mar 2017 17:28:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/youtube-now-lets-creators-crowdsource-translations-for-titles-and-descriptions/

YouTube today announced that creators can now use the Community Contributions feature to translate a video’s titles and descriptions. This means that it only takes a few clicks to let viewers translate your content so more people around the world can discover, understand, and learn from it.

Back in November 2015, YouTube started letting its community of viewers contribute translations for captions (also known as subtitles). Now the Google-owned company is opening up the functionality to titles and descriptions as well.

At the time, YouTube cited data from early tests where partners saw an increase in viewership because of the translations. Giving titles and descriptions the same treatment as captions is a no-brainer, and it’s frankly surprising it wasn’t done from the start. If your content is available in more languages, you’ve basically increased your potential audience.

We asked why title and descriptions weren’t included at the same time as captions. A YouTube spokesperson explained the plan was always to allow them eventually, but the team wanted to launch with subtitles first in order to test the product, improve it, get feedback from creators, and grow the community of contributors before expanding.

In short, this is the story of YouTube figuring out how crowdsourcing can be used to break down language barriers. YouTube has over 1 billion users, and they speak 76 languages, the company says.

“While that’s great for building global audiences, it means your content can sometimes get lost in translation,” the YouTube team noted. “That’s why we built translation tools so you can easily connect with audiences who don’t speak your native tongue.”

If you want to learn more, YouTube is offering a Creator Academy Boot Camp to provide more hands-on learning on how to use translation tools and grow your audience. The course runs between April 6 and April 24, so make sure to register before then.
