For our third and final interview from our visit to the set of The Happytime Murders, I bring you a discussion with producer/co-writer and Melissa McCarthy’s close collaborator Ben Falcone. In a roundtable interview, Falcone talked about how good the screenplay was on first read, the strange world-building of the movie, the difficulties in making an R-rated puppet comedy, making raunchy comedy that isn’t mean-spirited, how inactive puppets look like they’ve died, and how a puppet set is different from a regular set.
Do you do any puppets in this movie? What’s your role beyond producer?
That’s it. I’m just back there trying to pitch jokes, but mostly yeah. Thank you so much. But yeah, no, that’s, that’s all I, that’s all I’m doing here.
What made you and Melissa want to this?
You know, Melissa read the script and she read it really quickly and said she thought it was great. Which, you know, there are, there are good scripts out there… This one’s really great, not all that common. So, um, I read it and I also thought it was really great. And so basically it just comes. I read it, I mean, I’m sure I’m exaggerating, but I feel like I read it in 30 minutes. It was just a really clean and really funny and I thought it had a good point, some good points to make. So I was into it from the, from the start.
Could you give us a synopsis of the movie kind of where we start without too far into it?
Sure. Like 25 minutes later, I’m like, and in summation! It’s a movie about, it’s a world in which, you know, puppets and humans lived together and puppets are sort of the outcasts of society a little bit. There’s a puppet cop named Phil played by Bill Barretta who’s amazing and a human cop, a detective Edwards played by Melissa and they’ve had a falling out and they have to re-team up to solve a series of murders. So that’s basically what it is with the, you know, the sort of puppet human societal element in the background.
As the murders are happening? Apparently there was a show that happened in the 1980s?
Right. So, The Happytime Murders refers to a show called The Happytime Gang, which is like a famous show from the eighties or early nineties where, yeah, where there are puppets and a human, Jenny, played by Elizabeth Banks, our friend. Then she was the star of the show. And so basically Phil gets wise to the fact that these murders are going down and brings Edwards in even though they have a lot of animosity towards each other and they, you know, it’s, it’s kind of a, it’s a, a cop movie. A buddy movie and it’s, you know, to me it’s about their friendship and about them, like kind of reconnecting through some hard stuff and you know, during some hard times, and it’s super fun because puppets are very funny.
You said the puppets are sort of outcasts. Did something happen to make that?
You know, it’s, I think it’s just the world that’s set up that Brian is setting up really well. Brian Henson and the director and it’s, it’s just like, that’s how the world is. There’s just a, there’s puppets, you know? So, when you see a walks sign, there’s a human one and then there’s a puppet one at their level because generally they’re a little bit smaller. You know, the way that he’s got it set up is that puppets are sort of ostracized and they’re a little bit less than and they’re not taken care of entirely by the law. And so, it’s a really interesting kind of world that he’s just setting up and he’s just saying this is how it is.
Is there a message in there?
Well, I mean, I think you could definitely find some messages in there of like, you know, trying to treat everybody with equality and you know, a better, a better country for all of us for sure. Yeah.
I always loved when Henson would do these more adult things, but it seems like it’s harder and harder to do puppet stuff that is adult. How hard is it to get a production like this off the ground?
Well, they’ve had it going for, I mean, I’ll let Brian speak to it, for many reasons. First of which, he’s smarter than me, but he’s, I think had the script for six years and Adam Fogelson from STX has loved it forever. And when you’ve got the head of a studio and Brian Henson and it still takes a long time, it must mean that it’s pretty tricky to get it going. But here we are. They were crazy enough to let us try it. So, it seems really funny and Brian’s making a great movie.

The drama series features Nighy, Anna Chancellor, Poldark’s Eleanor Tomlinson, Alice Eve from Star Trek and Downton Abbey’s Matthew Goode.
But glorious Ardgowan House on the west coast of Scotland, once a favourite bolthole of Princess Margaret, also has a starring role.
Viewers have fallen in love with its fine exterior, rolling acres and interiors reeking of history.
For Sir Ludovic, 31, who is the 12th Baronet, it has proved a surreal experience. He said: “When they are in your house filming for five months it all becomes routine. You wake up and Bill is in the kitchen making a cup of coffee and that’s just life.
“As you are working and it’s late you might also hear someone scream. It can be a bit alarming.
“Also there was a moment where everyone had gone home and I walked into the drawing room to see they had set up a huge coffin.”
The stars used Sir Ludovic’s kitchen as their green room, apart from Bill Nighy and Anna Chancellor who had their own dressing rooms.
Filming ended in September but the crew returned to re-shoot in January and February after actor Ed Westwick was accused of sexual assault, which he denies, and replaced by Christian Cooke. The film crew have also helped Sir Ludovic finish renovations to his home. “They embellished the rooms and put the finishing touches on them,” he said.
Over the course of 800 years, the 10,000-acre Ardgowan Estate has been the scene of witch-hunts, been transformed into a wartime hospital, and had connections with Napoleon, Florence Nightingale and Robert the Bruce – Sir Ludovic’s ancestor.
The estate came into his family in 1406 and the current house was built in the 18th century.
Sir Ludovic inherited the property when he was 17 after his father, Sir Houston Shaw Stewart, died aged 72. Recalling Princess Margaret’s visits, Sir Ludovic said: “She used to come and stay here twice a year. When I was young they used to have these sniffer spaniels who would arrive a week before her visit and run around the house looking for non-existent bombs. I always remember that being a real highlight.”
TV shows Jonathan Creek, Still Game and Van Gogh: Painted With Words, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, have also been filmed there.. One tonight at 9pm.
Ordeal By Innocence is on BBC.
Shocked by the British authorities’ refusal to grant her a visa to visit relatives recovering from the March 4 attack in Salisbury, Viktoria Skripal told RT’s Ruptly video agency that she is planning to plead the case to the British Prime minister – especially after she was forced to tell Skiripal’s 90-year-old mother about the poisoning in order to get the needed paperwork.
“The main thing I want now is to see them in person in order to personally tell our grandmother about the state of health of her son and granddaughter. But my visa was denied,” Viktoria said, quoting the text of the letter she plans to send to PM May.
While the entire world is focused on the political scandal fueled by London’s accusations of Moscow, Viktoria, in her letter, reminds the British Prime Minister, that “ordinary people, our family” are at “the epicenter of this scandal.” All Viktoria and her relatives want now is “to be close” to their loved ones and support them in their recovery, hoping that Theresa May can relate to this “simple human desire.”
Yet Viktoria says she was denied entry to the UK because, in the first instance, her uncle Sergei Skripal and cousin Yulia were allegedly “not in the right condition” to receive visitors, and also because had never previously had a British visa issued to her. Earlier, Britain’s Home Office spokesman noted that they “refused a visitor visa application from Viktoria Skripal on the grounds that her application did not comply with the immigration rules.”
“I will collect all the missing documents and I hope your bureaucratic tricks will not continue to separate me from my loved ones,” Viktoria read the text of the letter on the sidelines of a Russian talk show in Moscow. “I urge the UK and you [PM May] personally to reconsider the decision to refuse my visa.”
During a brief phone conversation she had with Yulia when she regained her consciousness, Viktoria recalls her cousin saying “nobody is going to give you a visa.” Commenting on the call, Viktoria told Ruptly that she believes that conversation was prompted and coached, especially after Yulia noted that she would likely not consent to her visit, given the “situation.”
“You know what the situation is like here,” 33-year-old Yulia told her cousin on the phone. “We will figure it out later.”
“It was clear that she did not speak with her own words,” Viktoria told Ruptly. “It could not be heard on the phone, but [I heard someone saying] – ‘You can talk.’ She was obviously shuffled [by someone] and [somebody] dialed my number for her, because she clearly did not remember all nine figures of my cell number. Logically, she had to call my home number, but for some reason, she phoned my cell phone.”

The Skripals, who were discovered unconscious on March 4 on a bench at a shopping center in the town of Salisbury, have been treated in a UK hospital. British authorities insist they were poisoned by a military-grade nerve agent of Soviet origin (A-234, also known as ‘Novichok’). After battling for their lives for weeks, both Sergei and Yulia are reportedly no longer in critical condition and are now recovering.
The incident, which still poses more questions than answers, was used by Prime Minister Theresa May and other British officials to claim that it was ‘highly likely’ that Russia was behind the attack in Salisbury, and to pressure UK allies into introducing ‘retaliatory’ measures against Moscow before any investigation was concluded. Russian authorities have denied any involvement in the poisoning, saying there were no facts supporting the accusations, and urged an open, joint investigation into the case, which was rejected by the British side.

Princess Margaret, who died at the age of 71 in 2002, was the younger sister of Queen Elizabeth II, 91.
Although she was first engaged to Peter Townsend, she later married Lord Snowdon, also known as Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon, in 1960. The pair divorced 18 years later in 1978.
A Channel 5 documentary, Kensington Palace: Fit For A Princess, has told the story of Princess Margaret and “Tony’s” marriage and its subsequent breakdown.
The programme tells how their marriage became “ugly”, despite the couple’s “glamorous” reputation among peers.
The marriage wasn’t always doomed, it was suggested. The documentary described how the married couple renovated apartment 1A at Kensington Palace with a sum of £80,000 from the government.
“There were gaping holes in the floor, it was such a mess.” It is said the couple did many of the renovations together.
The home was famously the centre of the couple’s famously celebrity studded parties. “The Princess loved it. She was a great pianist.”
“They had parties with all the A list people around: Frank Sinatra, Peter Sellers, Elizabeth Taylor – anyone who was anybody,” said the documentary narrator.
However, the narrator described that everything wasn’t as it seemed inside the glamorous relationship.
“Margaret and her husband may have transformed Kensington Palace and made it into a celebrity hotspot, but behind the glamorous veneer their home life was in trouble.”
“The arguments started to become rather public,” he said, adding that the couple were “attracted to other people”.
“There was one occasion where she wanted to leave, he didn’t, he hid under a table, it all became rather ugly.
“Eventually, it became clear to Margaret and Tony that their marriage was over,” he continued.
“On the 24th of May 1978, they did something that no royal couple had done in 400 years. They divorced.”
Another Channel 5 royal documentary described the time Princess Margaret was reunited with her former lover, Peter Townsend, 30 years after their romance ended.
Their romance first began in 1947 during the royal tour of South Africa, when Peter was appointed Comptroller of the Household for the Queen Mother.
However, the romance proved controversial and the British Cabinet would not approve it which conflicted with her duties as part of the Royal Family.
Lady Glencoccer, a close friend of the late Princess Margaret, recounted what she said after her reunion was Peter.
She said: “Peter Townsend came to lunch with her and I said: “What was it like seeing him?”. “She said charming, he hadn’t changed at all.”
That is according to the US Secret Service, which profiled the perpetrators of the 28 mass attacks that took place in public places in the United States last year, from Orlando to Las Vegas. These incidents – defined as attacks in which three or more people were harmed – claimed the lives of 147 people and injured nearly 700 others.
John Robert Neumann was one of these perpetrators. After an honorable discharge from the Army in 1999, the 45-year-old had a history of petty crimes, including a driving offence in 2000, possessing stolen property in 2003, marijuana possession and leaving the scene of an accident in 2009.
Neumann worked for Fiamma, an Orlando company that manufactures RV awnings, until 2017, when he was fired in April for starting fights with co-workers. This was not without precedent. In 2014, Neumann was accused of battering a colleague, who later dropped the charges.
After his firing, one of Neumann’s managers, Robert Snyder, was fearful he would return to exact his revenge. On June 5, Snyder’s fear came true. Armed with a handgun and several knives, Neumann slipped into the factory through a rear door, where he singled out five former co-workers, including Snyder, and executed them with shots to the head.
Neumann allowed several other workers to escape and committed suicide as deputies closed in on the scene.
Neumann is a typical mass attacker, according to the Secret Service’s study. All of the perpetrators profiled in the study were male, and Neumann was just above the average age of 37. All age groups are represented fairly evenly in the study, with the exception of those over the age of 55, who make up only seven percent of all mass attackers.
Like Neumann, 54 percent of the subjects had a history of illicit substance abuse, including alcohol and marijuana. Another 71 percent also had criminal histories, including non-violent (57 percent) and violent (54 percent) offences.
One-third of the subjects, like 26-year-old Devin Patrick Kelley, had a history of domestic abuse. Kelley had been jailed in 2012 for brutally abusing his wife and stepson, and was investigated for rape and sexual assault in 2013.
On November 5, 2017, Kelley entered a Baptist church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, and opened fire with a semiautomatic rifle. Kelley killed 26 people and injured 20 before turning the gun on himself and taking his own life.
Neumann and Kelley are typical in that they killed not for an ideology or belief, but for personal reasons. In total, 41 percent of the 28 attackers were motivated by personal vendettas. Twenty-one percent of these grievances came from the workplace. The attacks that involved subjects who pre-selected their targets, as happened in Neumann’s case, are typical of attacks stemming from workplace grievances.
Robert Snyder was right to be fearful of Neumann too. Eight out of 10 attackers behaved in a way that raised concerns among their colleagues or friends. Like Neumann, 32 percent committed suicide after the attack.
Mental health problems are another common trait of mass attackers. Sixty-four percent experienced some mental health symptoms prior to striking, including paranoia, delusions, hallucinations, suicidal thoughts and depression. Eighty-two percent were described as “aggressively self-centered.”
While killers like Neumann were personally motivated to take violent revenge on those around them, 25 percent were motivated by ideology. These ideologies ranged from government conspiracy theories and white supremacy, to radical black nationalism and radical Islam.
White supremacy motivated 20-year-old James Alex Shields to plow his Dodge Challenger into a crowd of protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia; and radical Islam motivated Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov to mow down pedestrians in New York in the name of ISIS. However, according to the study, five of the seven attackers who were motivated by ideology, also suffered from paranoia, hallucinations or delusions. Moreover, for two of the attackers, their psychoses played “a dominant role” in the adoption of their belief systems.
School attacks made up five of the 28 attacks studied, and while gun violence in American schools has dominated media coverage since last month’s Parkland tragedy, separate research from Northeastern University shows that school shootings, and mass shootings in general, have been steadily declining since the early 1990s.

The arrest of a senior Serbian official in Kosovska Mitrovica threatens to scuttle the EU-led talks and between Belgrade and Kosovo, which declared independence a decade ago with NATO backing.
Ethnic Serb representatives in the institutions of Kosovo have withdrawn their participation following Monday’s arrest of Marko Djuric, the head of the Serbian government’s Office for Kosovo and Metohija, the province’s official name. Accused of being in Kosovo illegally, Djuric was arrested by heavily armed police at a town hall in Mitrovica, and transported to the provincial capital of Pristina where he was paraded before the cameras.
“To me, those are not police officers,” Djuric said in Belgrade on Tuesday after his release, according to B92. “That’s a raging terrorist gang. They were sent against unarmed people. That’s disgraceful for them, and for those who kept silent and in that way agreed to it.”
On the way from Mitrovica to Pristina, the Kosovo police took selfies as they pushed a rifle into his stomach and threatened him with a knife, Djuric said, adding that they also chanted “Allahu Akbar” (‘God is great’ in Arabic). Ethnic Albanians who live in Kosovo are predominantly Muslim.
Djuric added he was “dragged like a dog” and that his treatment was an attempt by Kosovo authorities to not only humiliate him, but also Serbia and the Serbs in general.
The incident comes after last week’s failed talks to advance the EU-sponsored agenda to “normalize” relations between Serbia and its breakaway province. The EU insists Serbia can only join the bloc if it recognizes Kosovo as an independent state, though five current members still refuse to do so.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic recently made comments about “hard decisions” and “painful compromises” that were widely interpreted as a willingness to recognize the province’s independence. Djuric was in Mitrovica to hold an “internal dialogue” town hall with ethnic Serbs who have survived in the province’s north after nearly two decades of repression and pogroms.
One of the leaders of Serbs in the north of Kosovo, Oliver Ivanovic, was gunned down in Mitrovica in mid-January. The investigation into his murder, which was conducted by Kosovo authorities, has not turned up any results so far.
NATO launched a 78-day air war against Serbia in 1999, accusing Belgrade of persecuting ethnic Albanians in Kosovo. The province was subsequently occupied by NATO forces under the UN Security Council Resolution 1244, which maintained that Kosovo was a part of Serbia. However, the NATO-backed ethnic Albanian provisional government unilaterally declared independence in February 2008, which has been recognized by over 100 countries, mainly US allies.
