Then-President Donald Trump campaigning with Ron DeSantis at a rally in Pensacola, Florida, on November 3, 2018.

  • Trump slammed DeSantis in private, wrote New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman in her new book.
  • Citing sources, Haberman wrote that Trump had called DeSantis "fat" and "whiny."
  • He also said Chris Christie, another rival, had a "weight problem," per Haberman's book.

Former President Donald Trump has been making rude comments in private about Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, according to a new book by New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman.

In an excerpt from "Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America," published by The Atlantic on Sunday, Haberman detailed a meeting she had in the summer with Trump at the latter's golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey.

During the meeting, she spoke with Trump about Christie, one of his 2016 election rivals.

"I was compared to him? Why? I didn't know I had that big of a weight problem," Trump told Haberman, per her account. He also called Christie an "opportunist."

Haberman also wrote that she had heard of Trump using similar terms to describe DeSantis. She also recalled learning from sources that Trump had called DeSantis "fat," "phony," and "whiny" while also taking credit for the latter clinching the governor's seat in 2018.

Per the excerpt, Trump told Haberman that the question he most often received was whether he would be running for president again.

"The answer is, yeah, I think so. Because here's the way I look at it. I have so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are," Haberman wrote of Trump's response.

She added: "Reflecting on the meaning of having been president of the United States, his first impulse was not to mention public service, or what he felt he'd accomplished, only that it appeared to be a vehicle for fame, and that many experiences were only worth having if someone else envied them."

Representatives for DeSantis and Christie and an aide at Trump's post-presidential press office did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.

DeSantis and Trump have been posited as leading contenders for the 2024 Republican presidential ticket, though neither has made a formal declaration about running in the next election.

In July, a DeSantis representative told Insider that DeSantis remains "focused on Florida and running for reelection as governor this year." However, the governor has been boosting his political profile — launching a fundraising blitz that included selling a gold "Florida First Fighter" card that appeared to resemble the Trump Card.

DeSantis also has high-profile supporters, such as podcast host Joe Rogan, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, and billionaire and Trump megadonor Peter Thiel.

Trump has reacted harshly to the idea that DeSantis might be a potential competitor for the 2024 GOP ticket.

In July, the former president slammed "Fox & Friends" for reporting on polls that showed DeSantis taking the lead over him, accusing the show's hosts of having "gone to the dark side." Earlier this month, Trump took a swipe at DeSantis, sharing an Insider story about his polling lead over DeSantis via his Save America political action committee.

Rolling Stone also recently reported that Trump was irritated that DeSantis was stealing his limelight with a political stunt that involved two planeloads of migrants being flown to Martha's Vineyard, a Democratic enclave.

Meanwhile, Trump also fat-shamed Christie on Truth Social after Christie gave an unflattering interview to ABC News' "This Week" about the Mar-a-Lago raid.

Former Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey.

  • DeSantis thinks Chris Christie "missed his moment" in running for the White House in 2016, per WaPo.
  • Christie passed on a 2012 campaign and opted to run in 2016, where he faced Donald Trump.
  • DeSantis is up for reelection in November and could potentially launch a 2024 campaign of his own.

In 2009, Chris Christie leaped to the top of the national political conversation, having won the New Jersey gubernatorial election as a Republican only a year after then-President Barack Obama won the solidly-blue state in a landslide.

Christie, a hard-charging former federal prosecutor with a blunt demeanor, quickly became a leading pick among Republican voters to potentially take on Obama in the 2012 presidential election. But after mulling over a presidential run that year, Christie eventually declined to challenge Obama and instead opted to run for reelection in 2013.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is up for reelection in November and could potentially launch a 2024 presidential bid of his own, has thought about Christie's decision to forgo a 2012 campaign and instead run in 2016, according to The Washington Post.

DeSantis, who could find himself in a race with both Trump and Christie in 2024, feels that the New Jersey governor "missed his moment" by choosing to run in 2016 instead of 2012, according to the report.

By the time Christie entered the 2016 contest, Donald Trump had just announced his White House campaign and was quickly becoming a phenomenon within the party, which would lead to him winning the GOP nomination and the general election. And Christie's aura had also dimmed.

The New Jersey governor was bruised after a high-profile scandal — dubbed "Bridgegate" — in which several of his political appointees colluded to create backups at the heavily-trafficked George Washington Bridge as political retribution against a local official.

There is no indication that DeSantis, who critics note has some political baggage of his own, would defer on a 2024 White House bid should Trump decide to launch a campaign.

Per the report, Dan Eberhart, a donor to DeSantis, said that several advisors informed him of the governor's thinking.

Eberhart told The Post that many individuals in DeSantis' political orbit want him to run for president in 2024.

Earlier this year, The Washington Post reported that Casey DeSantis, the governor's wife, wanted him to launch a 2024 White House bid, citing three individuals with knowledge of related conversations.

A recently-released USA Today/Suffolk University poll showed DeSantis ahead of Trump 48%-40% among Florida Republicans in a potential primary matchup.

But Trump remains — at the moment — far ahead of any of his potential rivals in virtually every major national poll surveying GOP voters.

In a POLITICO/Morning Consult poll conducted in mid-September, 52% of respondents said they would back Trump in a 2024 GOP presidential primary, compared to DeSantis with 19% support. Christie was backed by 1% of the respondents.

Insider reached out to the DeSantis campaign for comment.

In this November 3, 2018 file photo, then-President Donald Trump stands behind Ron DeSantis during a rally in Pensacola, Florida, during his first gubernatorial run.

  • Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis haven't spoken in months, The Washington Post reported.
  • Trump endorsed DeSantis during his 2018 gubernatorial campaign but hasn't campaigned for him this year.
  • Privately, Trump now slams DeSantis as "ungrateful," telling advisers: "I made him," WaPo reported.

Though former President Donald Trump vigorously campaigned in support of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2018, the one-time allies have grown distant amid rumors they will soon launch competing campaigns for the 2024 presidential election.

Sources familiar with the pair's interactions told The Washington Post the two haven't spoken in months, despite Trump once saying DeSantis would make a good Vice President if he changed up his ticket in 2024.

Privately, Trump now lambasts the man he once referred to as his "great friend," calling the Florida governor "ungrateful" for his earlier endorsement, The Washington Post reported.

"I made him," The Washington Post reported Trump told his aides while monitoring DeSantis' public appearances and polling numbers.

Though neither has officially announced a 2024 presidential run, the two politicians are widely regarded as expected frontrunners in the upcoming race, which Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell predicted would feature a "crowded" primary.

"I don't understand what happened here," The Washington Post reported Trump said of DeSantis' diminishing support. "I don't understand why he doesn't appreciate me more."

Trump has made similar comments before, criticizing DeSantis for his "dull personality."

In response, DeSantis has taken steps to distinguish himself from the former president on the campaign trail, though he hasn't explicitly criticized Trump. His recent decision to fly asylum seekers to Martha's Vineyard sent the former president into a rage, according to a report from Rolling Stone, spurring political analysts to argue that DeSantis was taking the spotlight off of Trump and furthering their rivalry.

The strategy appears to be working: DeSantis has out-fundraised the former president this year to the tune of $ 43 million, according to data collected by OpenSecrets. Polling also suggests the governor has an advantage over the former president in a hypothetical primary match-up in 2024.

Representatives for Trump and DeSantis did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.

Ron Desantis speaking.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis speaks at a press conference on September 7, 2022, in Miami, Florida.

  • Migrants who were flown to Martha's Vineyard filed a lawsuit against Gov. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday.
  • Migrants were made to believe that they would receive refugee benefits upon arrival, lawsuit says.
  • They received "official-looking materials" including a brochure "manufactured" by Florida officials.

Florida officials and agencies used several tactics to lure migrants on a chartered flight to Martha's Vineyard, including making a fake brochure that purports refugee benefits, according to a class-action lawsuit.

On September 14, 50 migrants, most of whom were from Venezuela, were flown in two chartered planes from Texas to Martha's Vineyard as part of a political stunt by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to criticize border policies under the Biden administration.

Now, a group of those migrants is taking action against DeSantis and other state officials and agencies in a class-action lawsuit filed on Tuesday. Lawyers representing the migrants accused DeSantis and Florida officials of plotting an "illegal scheme" to "defraud vulnerable immigrants to advance a political motive."

Part of that "scheme," according to the lawsuit, was to make "false promises and false representations" of potential employment and housing, among other benefits, upon arriving on Martha's Vineyard.

For example, just before they arrived on the island, migrants were given a "shiny, red folder" filled with "official-looking materials," including a brochure titled "Massachusetts Refugee Benefits."

The brochure contained misleading information on resettlement aid that, in reality, was not available for migrants seeking asylum in Massachusetts, as previously reported by Insider.

The lawsuit goes further by accusing DeSantis and other officials of fabricating the leaflet entirely.

"On information and belief, the brochure was manufactured by Defendants," the lawsuit read, adding that it "echoed the type of false representation" that migrants were given by word-of-mouth, such as assistance with housing, food, and employment in the first 90 days upon arrival in Massachusetts.

Brochure for Migrants
Lawyers for Civil Rights says migrants bound for Martha's Vineyard received this brochure promising cash, job placement and more.

According to the lawsuit, the brochure also took language from an existing state program, the Massachusetts Refugee Resettlement Program, which none of the migrants were eligible for.

"This brochure was not prepared by the Massachusetts Office for Refugees and Immigrants, or any other Massachusetts agency or immigration services organization," the lawsuit stated.

A representative from the state's Office for Refugees and Immigrants did not immediately respond to request for comment.

  • Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis defended his decision to fly dozens of migrants from Texas to Martha's Vineyard.
  • Over the weekend, he suggested that those migrants "hit the jackpot" by landing in Massachusetts.
  • But immigration experts say that language is dehumanizing and dangerous.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis continues to praise his own politicking after flying dozens of migrants from Texas to Martha's Vineyard last week, but immigration experts say the stunt was dehumanizing to the migrants at the center of the controversy and minimized the oft-harrowing journeys endured by asylum-seekers.

DeSantis in the last week has faced criticism and compliments for the decision, in which Florida chartered two planes to fly about 50 undocumented migrants from San Antonio, Texas, to the Massachusetts island.

The GOP lawmaker's office later clarified that the move was part of Florida's "relocation program to transport illegal immigrants to sanctuary destinations" — the most recent effort by GOP leaders to highlight what they call a crisis at the US Southern border.

Immigration advocates have uniformly rebuked the stunt, accusing DeSantis of prioritizing politics — and specifically, his aims for higher office — over the real lives of the Venezuelan and Colombian migrants caught in the crossfire.

"We all know this is sheer political theater," Vicki Gaubeca, director of Southern Border Communities Coalition, told Insider. "Florida is not on the US-Mexico border, so the migrants were transported to Martha's Vineyard from Texas on Floridians' dime."

She added that, instead of "caring about human beings fleeing political or economical disasters and providing a humane, orderly solution," DeSantis, along with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, "chose to lay bare their cruelty, add another layer of suffering and make the problem worse."

During a weekend speech at a Republican rally in Wisconsin, DeSantis doubled down on the move, saying that the migrants he sent to Martha's Vineyard had "hit the jackpot to be in the wealthiest sanctuary jurisdiction in the world."

It's carefully-chosen language on DeSantis' part but doesn't represent the reality for most migrants, according to immigration experts.

"Migrants being transported under false pretenses, away from their intended home communities, with the families and friends willing to receive them, to an island with no immigration courts or ICE field offices where migrants can check-in, can hardly be considered 'hitting the jackpot,'" Nicole Ramos, Al Otro Lado's Border Rights Project director, said in a statement to Insider.

"It looks more like a different shade of family separation to me," Ramos continued.

The migrants who landed in Martha's Vineyard last week were given misleading brochures promising cash assistance and job placement services before touching down on the island, according to lawyers for the migrants. Some of the asylum seekers also told NPR that a woman, who solely identified herself as "Perla," promised they would receive work permits in Boston after arriving.

The migrants on Tuesday filed a federal class action lawsuit against DeSantis, claiming that the incident was a "premeditated, fraudulent, and illegal scheme."

The governor's ongoing rhetoric, including his "jackpot" remark, could have longterm, harmful repercussions for migrants, according to Pedro Rios, director of the American Friends Service Committee's US/Mexico Border Program.

"By suggesting that the migrants he flew to Martha's Vineyard have a hit a 'jackpot,' he minimizes the harrowing experiences migrants have faced in their home countries and what they've encountered along dangerous routes," Rios told Insider.

He added: "This has the effect of dehumanizing them, which makes it easier for DeSantis' supporters to be intolerant of people in vulnerable conditions and easier to deny migrants and asylum seekers basic rights and protections."

Many migrants face danger and even the threat of death during their immigration experience, only to be met with further animosity once they reach the US, Rios said, which can have significant impacts on a person's mental health.

Earlier this week, an asylum seeker died by suicide in a New York City homeless shelter, Mayor Eric Adams announced on Monday. While there were few details released about the incident, Adams said at a press conference that the woman's death highlights the traumatizing experiences many migrants face.

"All local and state jurisdictions have the obligation to welcome migrants and asylum seekers with measures that uplift their dignity, that prioritize their emotional, mental, and physical integrity," Rios said.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' office said that the dozens of migrants that he had flown to the Massachusetts island of Martha's Vineyard are better off than they would have been in Texas after a Texas county sheriff announced that he had launched a criminal investigation into the matter.

Last week, about 50 migrants were taken on two chartered planes from Texas to Martha's Vineyard in a controversial move orchestrated by DeSantis.

The Republican governor's spokesperson Taryn Fenske said in a statement shared with Insider that immigrants were "more than willing" to leave Bexar County, Texas, "after being abandoned, homeless, and 'left to fend for themselves.'"

"Florida gave them an opportunity to seek greener pastures in a sanctuary jurisdiction that offered greater resources for them, as we expected," Fenske said.

Fenske added that unless the Massachusetts National Guard "has abandoned these individuals, they have been provided accommodations, sustenance, clothing and more options to succeed following their unfair enticement into the United States, unlike the 53 immigrants who died in a truck found abandoned in Bexar County this June."

The remarks came in response to the Bexar County Sheriff's Office opening an investigation into the transport of migrants to Martha's Vineyard.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar, a Democrat, said that the migrants were "lured" with "promises of a better life."

The Bexar County Sheriff's Office said that the migrants "were ultimately left to fend for themselves in Martha's Vineyard."

  • Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has gotten into high-profile fights with Disney and Big Tech.
  • It's a model Republicans should follow, he said at a conservative conference near Miami.
  • "I think that's an absolutely appropriate use of government power," he said.

AVENTURA, Florida — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has battled large corporation on everything from diversity trainings to environmental, social, and governance investing. He even took on family-favorite Disney by stripping the company of its self-governing status.

It's a surprising approach to business for a Republican who has support from more than 40 billionaire donors, and one that some critics have called heavy-handed and polarizing. Republicans have historically doled out major tax breaks to corporations while eschewing regulations in favor of a more hands-off posture.

But on Sunday evening in an hourlong speech before the National Conservatism Conference, DeSantis said Republicans' approach and thinking about big business needs to change, arguing that his experiences in Florida provide a "lesson for people on the right."

"Corporatism is not the same as free enterprise, and I think too many Republicans have viewed limited government to basically mean whatever is best for corporate America is how we want to do the economy," DeSantis said during his keynote speech before a crowd of friendly attendees at the JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort.

"And my view is — obviously free enterprise is the best economic system — but that is a means to an end. It's a means to having a good fulfilling life and a prosperous society. It's not an end in and of itself."

DeSantis has pushed through numerous contentious policies as governor that netted him national headlines and criticisms from the Biden administration. With the attention has come speculation that he may run for president in 2024.

First, however, he has to win reelection in Florida in November. He'll be facing off against former Rep. Charlie Crist, a Democrat who was a Republican governor of Florida from 2007 to 2011.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis speaks during the inaugural Moms For Liberty Summit at the Tampa Marriott Water Street on July 15, 2022 in Tampa, Florida. DeSantis is up for reelection in the 2022 Gubernatorial race against Democrat Charlie Crist.

DeSantis' list of actions against corporations is growing

DeSantis has taken numerous actions against what he refers to as "woke corporations." Most recently, he pushed the State Board of Administration to ban the consideration of "social, political, or ideological interests" — such as ESG — when it decides what investments to make for the state's pension fund.

The governor also revoked Disney World's self-governing status after the company pleaded with the governor to oppose the Parental Rights in Education Act. The bill limits discussions about gender identity and sexual orientation in a way critics say is too vague and will harm LGBTQ students, parents, and teachers. Critics have dubbed the law the "Don't Say Gay" bill.

Another law, the "Stop WOKE Act," would limit the way private companies carry out mandatory diversity, equity, and inclusion trainings. Companies that have 15 employees or more could face civil lawsuits if a worker accuses them of violating the law, which says businesses can't implement trainings saying members of a specific ethnic group are inherently racist or that people should feel guilty for actions committed by their predecessors.

And soon after former President Donald Trump left office and was booted off social media platforms for his role in the January 6, 2021m violent attack on the Capitol, DeSantis signed a bill into law to prevent tech companies from censoring political candidates.

"There's some people that criticize us in Florida because we've taken action to stand up to big tech companies," DeSantis said Sunday evening. "They say you know what, it's private. Let them do what they want to do. First of all, they cannot be viewed as private entities given that we know without a shadow of a doubt they are doing the regime's bidding when it comes to censorship."

Say Gay billboard
A mock-up is pictured of a "SAY GAY" billboard that activists are placing in Florida in response to the so-called "Don't Say Gay" bill.

But not all his plans are working

Some of the business laws in Florida are in litigation. The business portion of the "Stop WOKE Act" is being stayed after a judge cited free speech violations. The tech law has been blocked by an appeals court, with Circuit Judge Kevin Newsom writing in the opinion that "the government can't tell a private person or entity what to say or how to say it."

Other Florida laws have been confusing to navigate. This week, for instance, a Miami school board rejected a measure to observe LGBTQ History month, even though the governor's office said it wouldn't have violated the Parental Rights law.

But DeSantis doubled down on his actions during Sunday night's speech and predicted his administration would prevail against legal challenges. He accused "corporate America" of having too much power in America and of "exercising quasi-public power in terms of using their economic power to change policy in this country."

"What I'm doing is using government to give space to the individual citizen to be able to participate in society to be able to speak his or her mind," DeSantis said.

"And I think that's an absolutely appropriate use of government power. "
