Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Nicola Coughlan, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell, Dylan Llewellyn and Siobhan McSweeney all appear in the Channel 4 comedy – based in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. They attempted to impress judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood with an alcohol-laced trifle for their signature challenge. But a few of them tucked into the booze early as they whipped up sponges, jelly and custard. 

Prue told Dylan, 27, the layers of his Bakewell trifle are “a bit casual”, while she branded Saoirse-Monica’s effort “a bit messy and smeary”. 

Paul told Siobhan her trifle “looks like an aquarium,” while Prue added: “It does look like slime.” 

For the showstopper, the contestants had to make a two-tiered cake based on their favourite decade. 

Dylan crafted a 60s camper van using lemon cake, while Jamie-Lee, 28, fashioned the plane Amelia Earhart landed in Londonderry in the 1930s out of coconut cream cake. 

Nicola, 32, prepared a bowler inspired by 1930s film Berlin, while Saoirse-Monica, 26, made a 1960s peace and love lemon and blueberry cake. 

Siobhan, whose chocolate raspberry cake was in memory of family camping trips to Cork in the 1980s, later joked: “I’ve basically ruined the memory of my mother and father.” 

After the final challenge Nicola said: “I am a broken woman,” while Saoirse-Monica added: “I don’t think it could have gone any worse.”

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed on Friday night that they were dealing with “two incidents at two separate addresses in West Belfast.” 

A further search of both locations saw remnants of “industrial, firework-type devices” seized by police, and “a parked car was damaged at one of the houses”, according to a PSNI statement.

Sinn Fein’s Policing and Justice Spokesman Gerry Kelly condemned the “reprehensible and cowardly attacks.”

“Grandchildren were in the driveway of Adams’ home minutes before the attack,” he said.

Appealing for calm, Kelly described the attacks as “the desperate acts of increasingly desperate and irrelevant groups.”

Adams, a prolific social-media user who led Sinn Fein from 1983 until his retirement last February, tweeted in the early hours of Saturday morning that no one had been hurt during the attack, thanking neighbors and Sinn Fein members for their quick response.

The attacks were also condemned by other political parties in Northern Ireland, with Alliance Party leader Naomi Long calling for unity in the wake of the incident. 

“We need to stand together against all violence. No exceptions. No excuses,” she said. “It seems this week some people are determined to drag us back into violence at whatever cost.”

Those sentiments were echoed in the Republic of Ireland, where Taoiseach Leo Varadkar denounced the Belfast attacks, as well as the wider violence across Northern Ireland.

“We stand with the decent law-abiding people from all communities in the North,” he said. “We will not allow a small minority intent on violence to drag Northern Ireland back to the past.”

The west Belfast incidents come after six days of violence in Derry’s republican Bogside neighborhood, which the PSNI have attributed to dissident republican elements from the ‘New IRA.’

The unrest coincides with the loyalist marching season, which sees loyalists and unionists parading through nationalist areas.

Stating that the rioters in the Bogside had tried to murder them on Thursday night, police arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder after officers were attacked with 74 petrol bombs and two improvised explosives.

The previous night saw numerous vehicles hijacked and burned in Belfast, while a bus was hijacked by masked men and set on fire in county Down.

In the Sixties, some felt a sitcom about the Home Guard, just two decades after the Second World War, might be inappropriate. 

The success of Dad’s Army proved them wrong. 

Then there was the Nazi occupation of France and the French resistance, hardly the stuff of high jinks yet by 1982, it was quite able to tickle TV audiences in the form of ’Allo, ’Allo! 

Set in Northern Ireland in the Nineties, Lisa McGee’s comedy Derry Girls (C4) marks the first attempt, I believe, to make giggles out of The Troubles and doesn’t treat the divisions of Derry/ Londonderry just as backdrop. 

In the first episode, main girl Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson) and her pals were joined at their convent school by lone boy James (Dylan Llewellyn) who despite being Catholic couldn’t go to the boys’ school because he’s English.

The subject was even more pronounced last night, as Erin’s unremarkable Uncle Colm (Kevin McAleer) finally found something to talk about. 

His experience at the hands of balaclava-wearing gunmen turned him into a local celebrity and the family saw this as an opportunity to get free chips. 

Unfortunately, Erin and Co had rather spoiled relationships with the local chippy while trying to raise money for a school trip. 

It’s a clever thing, Derry Girls, pulling off several jobs while never forgetting to make us laugh. 

As well as turning the lead and bombs and graffiti of the era into something not far off comedy gold, it’s also good on the pains of growing up.

Hearing that a classmate is going to use her “trust fund” to pay for the Paris trip, Erin goes home and asks if she can dip into hers. 

“Sure,” says Erin’s splendidly formidable mammy (Tara Lynne O’Neill). 

“Account number, 654321, password, catch yourself on!” 

Wrapped up in school, friendships and the distant shoreline of getting off with actual boys, Erin and pals haven’t realised they’re poor. 

Meanwhile, at home, as on the streets, ancient quarrels rumble on.

Two episodes in to what we hope will be a long run, Derry Girls provides a rude and robust riposte to anyone who ever asked if you can joke about everything. 

Sure you can. 

As long as you’re funny.  

What sort of person goes to a beautiful Caribbean island like Sainte Marie, home of Death In Paradise (BBC1) and spends their time playing cards? 

Only the wicked, as last night’s tale, focussing on a poisoned poker champion, proved. 

Fans of this sea breeze of a cop show know how important veteran island officer, Dwayne Myers (Danny John-Jules) is to the work in hand. 

Despite his eye for the ladies and preference for a short cut, Dwayne is the one who knows someone who knows someone, the one who always remembers a vital detail from years back. 

It was a treat, then, to see him temporarily promoted to the role of detective. 

It would have been, that is, had the script not kitted him out with a bad suit, a comedy briefcase and made him all but useless at the job. 

We know this show’s never tried to be an in-depth character study but it should respect the ones who’ve been in it since the start.

For anyone who has coulrophobia, a fear of clowns, you’ll probably want to steer clear for the latest trailer for the new adaptation of Stephen King‘s beloved horror novel It.

Much like the first trailer, It doesn’t go out of its way to try to terrify you with cheap jump scares. Instead, they let suspense do the work as the audience anticipates something horrible happening. In this instance, mysterious disappearances have the town of Derry, Main on edge, even going so far as to institute a curfew. But a group of kids apparently aren’t scared enough of the abductions as they continue to ride around town on their bikes, exploring the dark, damp sewers where a terrifying monster resides.

New Line Cinema’s horror thriller “IT,” directed by Andrés Muschietti (“Mama”), is based on the hugely popular Stephen King novel of the same name, which has been terrifying readers for decades.

When children begin to disappear in the town of Derry, Maine, a group of young kids are faced with their biggest fears when they square off against an evil clown named Pennywise, whose history of murder and violence dates back for centuries.

“IT” stars Bill Skarsgård (“Allegiant,” TV’s “Hemlock Grove”) as the story’s central villain, Pennywise.  An ensemble of young actors also star in the film, including Jaeden Lieberher (“Midnight Special”), Jeremy Ray Taylor (“Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip”), Sophia Lillis (“37”), Finn Wolfhard (TV’s “Stranger Things”), Wyatt Oleff (“Guardians of the Galaxy”), Chosen Jacobs (upcoming “Cops and Robbers”), Jack Dylan Grazer (“Tales of Halloween”) and Nicholas Hamilton (“Captain Fantastic”).

Muschietti directed “IT” from a screenplay by Chase Palmer & Cary Fukunaga and Gary Dauberman, based on the novel by King.  Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Seth Grahame-Smith, David Katzenberg and Barbara Muschietti are the producers, with Richard Brener, Dave Neustadter, Walter Hamada, Marty P. Ewing, Doug Davison and Jon Silk serving as executive producers.

It hits theaters on September 8.
