Turkey deploys special forces to Afrin, Syria in ‘preparation for new fight’ https://briefnews.eu/turkey-deploys-special-forces-to-afrin-syria-in-preparation-for-new-fight/ https://briefnews.eu/turkey-deploys-special-forces-to-afrin-syria-in-preparation-for-new-fight/#respond Mon, 26 Feb 2018 17:58:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/turkey-deploys-special-forces-to-afrin-syria-in-preparation-for-new-fight/ Ankara has sent police special forces units to the northern Syrian region of Afrin in anticipation of a new phase of its campaign against the Kurdish militias. It also says the UN-backed ceasefire does not affect its operation.

The special forces units crossed into Syrian territory from the southern Turkish provinces of Kilis and Hatay, local media reported. The new forces are expected to hold villages taken by Turkish troops from the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) as well as to take part in urban combat as Turkey’s Operation Olive Branch apparently moves from the countryside to the major settlements.

“Deploying special forces is part of the preparation for a new fight that is approaching,” Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag told Turkish NTV. “The fight will shift to places where there are civilians, as the area (of fighting) narrows,” he said, adding that the special forces units have experience in fighting militants in residential areas.

Even though the Turkish operation has entered its sixth week, most of the larger towns in the Kurdish-held enclave, including the city of Afrin itself, remain in the hands of the YPG. Still, Turkish forces drove the Kurdish militias from all areas bordering Turkey, local media report. On February 20, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the troops would lay siege to Afrin “in the coming days.”

Operation Olive Branch will continue despite a UN Security Council resolution envisaging a 30-day nationwide ceasefire in Syria. The resolution, which was unanimously adopted by the security council on Saturday, says that the ceasefire does not apply to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS), Al-Nusra, or any other terrorist organization.

Ankara believes this exemption applies to the Kurdish militias as well. “When we look at the UN Security Council resolution, we see that fight against terror organizations is outside its scope. Therefore, it will not affect Turkey’s ongoing operation,” Bozdag said, as cited by Anadolu news agency.

The Turkish military began its operation against the YPG, a Kurdish-led militia, as it considers it to be a wing of the PKK, an armed movement that Ankara regards as terrorist. The YPG, which controls several enclaves in northern Syria, including Afrin, secured the territories from Islamist rebels and other extremist groups over the course of the Syrian conflict with the US-led coalition’s backing.

The number of “terrorists” who were “neutralized” over the course of the operation has reached 2,059, the Turkish General Staff said on Monday. Ankara also insists that the offensive is solely aimed at wiping out terrorists, denying allegations that it has targeted civilians.

The Turkish operation also increases tensions between Ankara and Damascus. The Syrian government has repeatedly condemned the operation as a violation of the country’s sovereignty and has accused Ankara of “aggression” against the Syrian people. Damascus also sent militias to Afrin to reinforce locals in their resistance against the Turkish onslaught.

This information was disputed by Ankara, which said the Syrian forces were prevented from entering the region. Erdogan also warned that the incoming militias would “pay a heavy price.”

Japan deploys first of 10 US-made stealth fighter jets https://briefnews.eu/japan-deploys-first-of-10-us-made-stealth-fighter-jets/ https://briefnews.eu/japan-deploys-first-of-10-us-made-stealth-fighter-jets/#respond Sat, 27 Jan 2018 16:47:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/japan-deploys-first-of-10-us-made-stealth-fighter-jets/

Japan has commissioned the first of its new F-35A stealth fighter jets at a military base in the north of the country amid ongoing regional tension over North Korea’s missile testing.

READ MORE: American provocateur: Why North Korea is going ballistic over missiles

The Air Self Defence Force (ASDF) plans to add another nine of the radar-evading planes to its fleet from April, according to the Japan Times. “The deployment of the high-performance F-35 aircraft is significant for Japan’s security at a time when neighboring countries have been quickly building up their air force capabilities in recent years,” said Itsunori Onodera, Japanese Minister of Defense.

The move to deploy the jet to the Misawa Air Base in the Aurora Prefecture comes amid increased tensions in the region following North Korea’s latest series of nuclear and ballistic missile tests. Japan hopes to increase its overall number of F-35As to 42 in the coming years as the country seeks to replace its fleet of outdated F-4 models. Each unit costs around $ 95million, according to the manufacturer Lockheed Martin.

The US Air Force grounded dozens of F-35s after five pilots complained of dizziness and tingling in their extremities following flights out of Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, Arizona. The pilots were diagnosed with hypoxia, but despite failing to identify the malfunction responsible for the condition the USAF cleared the F-35s to fly after just 11 days.

The F-35 remains a popular jet for countries looking to bolster their defenses. In December, the Joongang Ilbo newspaper reported that South Korea’s defense chiefs plan to buy an additional 20 F-35A aircraft from the US. This follows the country’s previous purchase of 40 stealth jets from Lockheed Martin in 2014.

Overall, the US and its allies plan to buy more than 3,100 F-35s in the coming years as part of a near $ 400 billion program to replace outdated aircraft, according to Reuters.

China deploys ‘jellyfish shredders’ to protect its fleet of aircraft carriers https://briefnews.eu/china-deploys-jellyfish-shredders-to-protect-its-fleet-of-aircraft-carriers/ https://briefnews.eu/china-deploys-jellyfish-shredders-to-protect-its-fleet-of-aircraft-carriers/#respond Sat, 02 Dec 2017 15:56:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/china-deploys-jellyfish-shredders-to-protect-its-fleet-of-aircraft-carriers/

China has created a new weapon to destroy one of the biggest threats to its aircraft carriers – pesky jellyfish.

Dubbed the “Jellyfish shredder,” the Chinese weapon simply destroys the fish by chopping them into thousands of pieces. The threat of jellyfish sabotaging aircraft carriers is very real as the floating invertebrates can get sucked into the ships’ water intake pipes and clog the cooling systems.

In fact, in January 2006 a swarm of the creatures took out the USS Ronald Reagan while it was docked in Brisbane, Australia. The fish were sucked into the giant ship’s condensers, paralyzing it until technicians could clean up the blubbery mess.

The jellyfish shredder is a large net, several hundred meters long, with a set of sharp blades in the middle. The South China Morning Post reports that the net is towed by an accompanying boat which travels at high speed using the force of the currents to suck the jellyfish to their grisly demise.

The mass killing machine leaves a trail of destruction in its wake as the water becomes murky with decomposing matter. Researchers also warned that pieces of jellyfish that wash up on shore could sting bathers even though the creatures have been destroyed.

Another team of researchers from the Urban Robotics Lab at Korea’s KAIST university created a similar machine and released a video showing how it pulverizes the fish.

Not content with immobilizing warships, the gelatinous blobs also have a reputation for knocking out power plants. A nuclear power plant in Torness, Scotland was closed for an entire week in 2011 after a swarm of moon jellyfish blocked its cooling water intakes. Similar incidents have also taken place in the US, Japan, Sweden and Israel in recent years.

Chicago deploys more police as death toll hits 500 https://briefnews.eu/chicago-deploys-more-police-as-death-toll-hits-500/ https://briefnews.eu/chicago-deploys-more-police-as-death-toll-hits-500/#respond Tue, 19 Sep 2017 20:19:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chicago-deploys-more-police-as-death-toll-hits-500/ Despite a boost in police numbers, Chicago, Illinois has recorded its 500th homicide for the year, with 11 people killed and more than 30 wounded in shooting incidents over the weekend.

Among those killed was a pregnant woman, and two people who lived on the same block, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Four people were killed in Brighton Park on Friday as they traveled in a car, police said, adding that the latest bloodshed resulted from an ongoing gang war in the Southwest Side neighborhood.

The neighborhoods of Brighton Park and Back of the Yards have been the scene of dozens of rifle shootings since early 2016. In February, rival gangs were reported to have stepped up their use of assault rifles.

Last year was the most violent in Chicago in decades, with many residents using the nickname “Chiraq” to compare it to Middle Eastern war zones.

In the first four months of 2017, more than 1,000 people were shot and nearly 200 homicides were reported in Chicago. Last year was the most violent in Chicago for the past 20 years, reaching 500 homicides by late August.

Over 2,700 people were shot in Chicago this year, a more than 11 percent decrease from the 3,066 shot during the same time last year, according to Tribune data. So far, the number of homicides is down about 7 percent from this time last year, according to the Tribune. The city of 2.7 million still has the second-highest violent crime rate in the US.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a Democrat, announced Sunday that nearly 100 new Chicago police officers have hit the streets, according to WBN-TV.

Nearly two dozen are to be stationed in Englewood on the South Side, which has a predominately African American population (93 percent) and some of the city’s poorest housing and inadequate services.

Emanuel said the new officers are part of an effort to increase the police presence while taking “kids, guns and gangs off the streets.”

“The Englewood community is one of the toughest, and they’re leading in the decline in the city and we want to see that in every neighborhood,” the mayor said in a statement.

Emanueltouted a 45 percent decline in shootings in the neighborhood in the past year, including a 30 percent decrease in homicides.

City officials plan to add an additional 1,000 officers to the force over the next two years. Police have seized more than 5,000 guns from the city’s streets this year.

Mayor Emanuel’s plan may be affected by an ongoing lawsuit filed by Chicago against the Department of Justice, however. Chicago sued the DOJ after Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced in July that “sanctuary cities” would not receive law enforcement funding from the DOJ. Chicago expected $ 3.2 million in grants.

A Chicago judge filed an injunction against the DOJ policy on Friday, preventing it from going into effect until the lawsuit is decided. Chicago refuses to comply with federal demands to help immigration authorities detain and deport illegal immigrants.

A report in 2013 said most of Chicago’s violent crime came from gangs trying to maintain control of drug-selling territories, and specifically related to the activities of Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel, which was working to control illicit drug distribution against local street gangs, according to Bloomberg.

Violence in Chicago is often hyped by the media, Grammy-nominated rapper Vic Mensa told RT’s Larry King last month.

“Violence in Chicago is often sensationalized and it’s turned into a headline. It is used for the benefit of people in the media and people in power. It is looked at very one dimensionally without observing the factors that have created this violence,” Mensa told King. “The fact that you can live your entire life in Lincoln Park, Chicago and not hear a gunshot, but be in a different neighborhood and hear gunshots every night.”

The tally for the number of homicides is also in dispute. The Chicago Tribune keeps a running tally and said the weekend’s death toll took the year’s total past 500, whereas the Chicago Police Department said the number was 486. The Tribune counts all homicides, including those counted as justifiable.

South Korea deploys final pieces to THAAD anti-missile system as US seeks tough North Korea sanctions https://briefnews.eu/south-korea-deploys-final-pieces-to-thaad-anti-missile-system-as-us-seeks-tough-north-korea-sanctions/ https://briefnews.eu/south-korea-deploys-final-pieces-to-thaad-anti-missile-system-as-us-seeks-tough-north-korea-sanctions/#respond Thu, 07 Sep 2017 04:02:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/south-korea-deploys-final-pieces-to-thaad-anti-missile-system-as-us-seeks-tough-north-korea-sanctions/ thaadSEOUL/UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – Protesters clashed with thousands of police at a South Korean village on Thursday as components of a controversial system to guard against North Korean missiles were deployed, while China and the United States discussed options to deal with Pyongyang.

The United States wants the United Nations Security Council to impose an oil embargo on North Korea, ban its exports of textiles and the hiring of North Korean laborers abroad, and subject leader Kim Jong Un to an asset freeze and travel ban, according to a draft resolution seen by Reuters on Wednesday.

Pressure from Washington has ratcheted up since North Korea conducted its sixth and largest nuclear test on Sunday. That test, along with a series of missile launches, showed Pyongyang was close to achieving its goal of developing a powerful nuclear weapon that could reach the United States.

Amid the rising tensions, Seoul installed the four remaining launchers of the U.S. anti-missile Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system on a former golf course in the south early on Thursday. Two launchers had already been deployed.

More than 30 people were injured when around 8,000 South Korean police broke up a blockade of about 300 villagers and civic groups opposed to the THAAD system deployment, fire officials said.

The decision to deploy the THAAD system has drawn strong objections from China, which believes its radar could be used to look deeply into its territory and will upset the regional security balance.

‘See what happens’

U.S. President Donald Trump has urged China, North Korea’s biggest ally and trading partner, to do more to rein in its neighbor.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said he has an executive order ready for Trump to sign that would impose sanctions on any country that trades with Pyongyang if the United Nations does not put additional sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear tests.

Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping committed on a phone call on Wednesday to “take further action with the goal of achieving the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula”, the White House said.

“President Xi would like to do something. We’ll see whether or not he can do it. But we will not be putting up with what’s happening in North Korea,” Trump told reporters, although he offered no specifics.

“I believe that President Xi agrees with me 100 percent,” he said.

Asked whether he was considering a military response to North Korea, Trump said: “Certainly, that’s not our first choice, but we will see what happens.”

Xi told the U.S. president during their 45-minute call that the North Korean issue must be resolved through “dialogue and consultation”.

The United States had set aside for now consideration of terminating a U.S. trade agreement with South Korea, a senior administration official said on Wednesday. The trade issue is unrelated to North Korea but has been a source of tension between the two allies.

Moon, Abe meet

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korean President Moon Jae-in spoke at a regional meeting in the eastern Russian city of Vladivostok and agreed to persuade China and Russia to cut off oil to North Korea as much as possible, according to South Korean officials.

Abe also invited Moon to a trilateral meeting between China, Japan and South Korea in Tokyo and Moon said he would be happy to attend if such a summit happened.

Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported that Abe and Moon would seek Russian and Chinese support for new sanctions against the North.

However, sanctions have so far done little to stop North Korea boosting its nuclear and missile capacity as it faces off with Trump.

China and Russia have advocated a “freeze for freeze” plan, where the United States and South Korea would stop major military exercises in exchange for North Korea halting its weapons programs, but neither side is willing to budge.

North Korea says it needs to develop its weapons to defend itself against what it sees as U.S. aggression.

South Korea and the United States are technically still at war with North Korea after the 1950-53 Korean conflict ended with a truce, not a peace treaty.

Rio de Janeiro deploys 10,000 troops to tackle crime surge https://briefnews.eu/rio-de-janeiro-deploys-10000-troops-to-tackle-crime-surge/ https://briefnews.eu/rio-de-janeiro-deploys-10000-troops-to-tackle-crime-surge/#respond Sat, 29 Jul 2017 11:00:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rio-de-janeiro-deploys-10000-troops-to-tackle-crime-surge/

Authorities in Brazil are deploying 10,000 troops to Rio de Janeiro in response to a rising surge in organized crime and murders since the city hosted last year’s Olympics.

Over 90 police officers have been killed in 2017 so far, and in the first six months of the year, an average of three people were killed by stray bullets each day.

Around 8,500 soldiers and police were sent to the capital in trucks on Friday. President Michel Temer signed a decree to allow the troops to be in Rio until the end of next year.

Brazilian Defense Minister Raul Jungmann said the troops are there to carry out intelligence operations and to tackle criminal organizations involved in drug trafficking, theft, and other crimes.

Jungman referred to the situation as “war” and said, “I promise a very hard job here, but do not expect miraculous and immediate results,” O Globo reports.

“We will have troops on the street for a certain period and, later, their participation in more extensive areas,” he said.

The minister said communities won’t be occupied, but that specific operations would be conducted when necessary. He also pointed to prisons as a target, and wants to change family members acting as “mail pigeons” for inmates.

“What we need is to disrupt the command of the crime. What can not be to have a head of an organization for 15 years in the penitentiary of Mossoró and to continue in the control of the faction,” he said. “We have to cut off this communication and society has to face it.”

Last week, relatives of police officers gathered at Copacabana to protest the latest death of an officer killed in the Vidigal favela, and to demand more support.

Brazilian police have also been accused of using “unnecessary and excessive force,” Amnesty International said.

Favela residents also gathered at Copacabana beach at the start of July to call for an end to shootouts between drug dealers and police, after a mother and daughter were killed, Journal Dia Dia reported.

Stray bullets are such an issue in Rio that two apps have recently been created to help locals avoid areas where gun battles are taking place in real time, Reuters reported.

Duterte deploys commandos, attack helicopters to retake Marawi from ISIS-linked fighters (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/duterte-deploys-commandos-attack-helicopters-to-retake-marawi-from-isis-linked-fighters-video/ https://briefnews.eu/duterte-deploys-commandos-attack-helicopters-to-retake-marawi-from-isis-linked-fighters-video/#respond Thu, 25 May 2017 19:14:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/duterte-deploys-commandos-attack-helicopters-to-retake-marawi-from-isis-linked-fighters-video/

Philippines special forces launched an attack on Islamist militant positions in Marawi City early Thursday morning in a bid to retake the city from the ISIS-affiliated Maute group. The operation involved ground troops supported by attack helicopters.

“We’re confronting maybe 30 to 40 remaining from the local terrorist group,” said Jo-Ar Herrera, spokesman for the military’s First Infantry Regiment, as cited by Reuters.

“The military is conducting precise, surgical operations to flush them out… The situation is very fluid and movements are dynamic because we wanted to out-step and outmaneuver them.”

Ground troops engaged Maute fighters – affiliated to IS (Islamic State, formerly ISIS/ISIL) – while attack helicopters bombarded their positions from above with heavy machine gun fire and rockets.

Some 18 rebels and six soldiers were killed in the operation according to an army spokesperson cited by Reuters.

RT reached out to Marawi resident and eyewitness Chico Dimaro Usman who has captured the carnage in detail, uploading images and video to Facebook.

Maute fighters have torched buildings throughout the city including a jail, a cathedral and a local school, Dansalan College.

The coordinated air and ground operations began at roughly 9am Usman said.

The air raids continued throughout the morning into mid-afternoon but Usman captured both raids on camera.

RT has corroborated that the videos were taken in the region through comparisons of local topography in the videos with imagery from Google Earth.

Local weather reports confirm roughly 90 percent cloud cover in the area around Marawi City which matches the footage taken by Usman.

RT obtained private statements from Usman confirming that he is in the area. Out of concern for his and his family’s safety, RT is not disclosing his exact location at this time.

So far, a total of 46 people including 15 security forces and 31 Maute fighters have been killed in Marawi City reports Reuters.
