In Whale Rock Games’ co-op shooter Deployment, future wars between governments and megacorps have escalated into digital conflicts, within the procedural battlefields of servers.
In this cyberpunk action game, bots created from information data battle the encroaching forces of megacorps, in a ceaseless virtual war to control data. Working with a friend online or fighting AI in single player, you choose between several “infobot” classes – the aggressive Gunner, the damage-absorbing Pyro – and enter hectic dual-stick combat against waves of enemies.
Survival means quick reflex, precise aim, customizing your attack style through skills and perks for each class, and capturing powerful turrets within rooms to turn the tides against your relentless enemy.
Deployment is available for $ 12.99 on Steam.
]]>“Pairing F-35B Lightning IIs with the USS Wasp represents one of the most significant leaps in warfighting capability for the Navy-Marine Corps team in our lifetime,” US Navy Rear Admiral Brad Cooper said in Monday’s statement. The Navy said it was “the first time the aircraft has deployed aboard a US Navy ship and with a Marine Expeditionary Unit in the Indo-Pacific.”
The ship set sail from the US Navy overseas base at Sasebo on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu on Saturday. It had six of the F-35B short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) variants of the Lockheed Martin jets from the US Marine Corps VMFA-121 Fighter Attack Squadron on board.
The voyage follows a year of escalating tensions between the US and North Korea over Pyongyang’s nuclear weapon and ballistic missile tests, as a trade war looms with China.
The USS Wasp is a 40,000-ton amphibious assault ship built by the US Marine Corps for launching seaborne invasions. It is a far cry from the Navy’s 10 USS Nimitz-class supercarriers which weigh in at 100,000 tons and can carry 90 aircraft each. The Wasp carries a mere six F-35Bs in its full aircraft complement.
With a projected $ 1.5 trillion spent over its lifetime, the F-35 is the most expensive weapons system ever built. But critics say it has inferior performance to the four tried and tested aircraft models it was designed to replace: the F-16 Falcon, F/A-18 Hornet, A-10 Warthog tank buster and AV-8 Harrier II jump-jet.
The aircraft’s development and in-service program has also been plagued with technical hitches. On Monday, the Pentagon confirmed that 49 percent of the 280 F-35s that have been delivered to the US Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps so far were suffering from a litany of software and hardware problems, leaving only half of the force airworthy.

A reporter, apparently working for Al Mayadeen pan-Arabist satellite television channel, has narrowly escaped being struck by a shell that landed a few hundred meters down the road from the crew’s position. The video, obtained by RT’s Ruptly video agency, show the correspondent reporting live on camera as a projectile narrowly misses his position.
“Turkish forces targeted with artillery the locations of the popular forces upon their arrival in the area of Afrin, in addition to targeting media delegations that are covering the arrival of the forces,” Syrian SANA news agency’s reporter in Afrin confirmed.
While SANA reports that the “popular forces” comprised of Shia militias have established themselves in the region to support the Kurds against terrorists and the “Turkish aggression,” Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday claimed that the Syrian forces’ advance into Afrin was thwarted. “They were forced to go back after artillery shooting,” the Turkish President said, noting that “Afrin city center will be besieged in the coming days.” Earlier, Turkey said they it fired “warning shots” at Syria pro-regime forces in Afrin, claiming that militias were forced to fall at least ten kilometers back.
Turkey, which has been conducting the so-called operation Olive Branch in Afrin since January 20, insists that the offensive is solely aimed at wiping out Kurdish “terrorist” fighters along its borders, denying allegations that it has targeted civilians. Medical sources at Afrin Hospital, however, told Syrian media that at least 175 civilians were killed and more than 450 wounded since the launch of the Turkish operation in northern Syria.
Ankara’s operation, which aims to create a 30km “secure zone” within Syrian territory, has repeatedly been denounced by Damascus as a blatant attack on its sovereignty. Seeking protection, the Kurdish authorities in Afrin called on the government to send troops to help defend the border from Turks.

Twitch is getting a new chief operating officer and some new vice presidents to help it continue to develop and launch community products on a steady schedule. The company, which now calls itself a “social video service,” wants to keep its lead in broadcasting live video to the internet, and its new leadership is coming in to provide more tools to keep content creators and their audiences engaged.
Above: Twitch COO Sara Clemens
The new executives include three hires. Sara Clemens is the biggest of those as she will overtake the role of chief operating officer after her time as COO of music-streaming platform Pandora. Twitch is also bringing in Mark Weiler (former Rubicon Project head of engineering) as its head of platforms and services and Amir Shevat (former developer relations boss at Slack) as its vice president of developer experience. In 2017, Twitch introduced a number of new features like achievements and subscription gifting. In 2018, Twitch wants to do even more.
“Twitch has continued to grow at an amazing rate,” Twitch chief executive Emmett Shear said in a statement. “With our focus on listening to our community and providing the products and services to fuel their success, it’s important that we continue to invest in a leadership team that will ensure we are bringing these things to market in a timely and effective manner. To that end, Sara Clemens, Mark Weiler, and Amir Shevat are all recognized leaders in their respective fields and extend Twitch’s role as a leader in social video.”
Clemens comes from Pandora, where she worked as COO. She landed on Billboard’s Most Powerful Women in Music in 2015 and 2016 for helping the streaming-music service connect musicians with their fans. Clemens has also spent time with LinkedIn and Microsoft’s Xbox team.
“Brands with a creator-first ideology have the greatest potential for success because they are driven by the customer, not competitors,” said Clemens. “Twitch is a uniquely creator-centric company as demonstrated by the level of social engagement on the service. My goal is to apply my global experience from the technology, gaming, and entertainment industries to optimize how the teams at Twitch work together to further the brand’s mission of enabling creators to connect with fans and build amazing real-time experiences.”
Former Twitch COO Kevin Lin, who cofounded Twitch, is shifting into a new role where he will build out the company’s original programming.
Clemens experience at Pandora explains why Twitch is turning to her. The company’s keys to growth are figuring out ways to maximize the exposure between audiences and their favorite broadcasters. That’s what is important to Amazon’s livestreaming platform at the moment. Clemens oversaw a similar strategy at Pandora, and she could unlock some of that potential at Twitch.
On Thursday, Niger officials announced they would allow the Pentagon to operate armed drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), out of the country’s capital, Niamey. The drones will be used to conduct strikes on terrorist groups like al-Qaeda and its affiliates that operate along the country’s border with Mali. The move would allow the US military to significantly expand its reach in West Africa.
But Africa affairs analyst Lawrence K Freeman says that drone strikes alone will be unlikely to change the region’s jihadist landscape, which is being driven by more than just a handful of key operatives.
“So, this is a big problem for the Niger government, for West Africa, and for all of Africa – [that Niger] is now allowing the US to carry out these kind of military attacks,” Freeman told RT. “What is missing from this, is a strategy.
“There has not been a strategy now for many, many years through several presidential administrations, including the current one.”
The thinking in Washington is that by taking out key figures in the terrorist chain of command, this will help bring down the whole network. This approach has worked against some militant groups in the past but is unlikely to work here, Freeman said.
“The Sahara Desert itself, which goes all the way up to the Mediterranean, this is larger than the US. The Sahel desert stretches from the east end to the end of Africa. It is impossible to patrol all these areas. Therefore, you might pick off a few people here and there, which is useful, but you’re not going to stop the problem of terrorism.”
US drone strikes under presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama and now Donald Trump have claimed thousands of innocent lives across the world, Freeman said, with no tangible reduction in terrorism. Indeed, a New York Times report back in 2012 claimed that the Obama administration, which was conducting operations in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen and Somalia, considered “all military-age males in a strike zone as combatants… unless there is explicit intelligence posthumously proving them innocent.”
Now it seems the US wants to export that model to West Africa.
“The African countries now are being pressured by the West and by the Trump administration to allow these armed drones and another military buildup, and I am sure it is going to cause them many, many internal problems,” Freeman said. “And it will not solve the problem of terrorism, and that is a sad point about it.”
Indeed, Freeman added, the collateral damage from these attacks may even give the terrorists a propaganda boost, though the chronic levels of poverty and underdevelopment in the region already provide a fertile ground for extremist recruitment.
“If you take northern Mali, Niger, Chad – I have been in Chad, I have been in northern Nigeria – these places are totally undeveloped. Therefore, they are perfect further bases for Boko Haram, for al-Qaeda, for ISIS (Islamic State) and others to operate, recruit and establish bases.
“So why not to take that territory from them? Why not to occupy with development, with cities? This will actually move the terrorists out. And the Europeans now in an existential crisis, because of the hundreds of thousands of Africans that have migrated, plus the hundreds of thousands that appeared to be in Libya slaves? And this is all because Africans in West Africa cannot live there anymore. They are desperate to get out, because there are no jobs, and there is no hope for the future.”
Instead of dropping bombs, the analyst suggested, the United States and Europe should make further investments in the region, as China is doing.
“This is the solution, and the US should join that effort, rather than carry out these piecemeal military attacks which in the long run are not going to work and may further destabilize these countries, as US military troops are not going to be welcome all over Africa.”

And somewhere amid all that, she made time to pay the occasional visit to TNT’s Animal Kingdom.
TVLine invited Ochoa to reflect on Blood Drive‘s unbridled run (anal action, fisting and all!), tease the climactic clash between Grace and Karma, and defend The CW’s braving of a new genre, with Valor.
TVLINE | I’m always fascinated when an actor has their “moment” — when because of scheduling, lead times and whatever, all of a sudden they have not one but three projects popping at once. What’s that like on your end?
It’s something I can’t quite process even though it’s happening. There seems to be a part of me that doesn’t really believe it’s happening. I count my blessings, but when people are like, “Oh, I just saw your show,” the fact that I actually have the capability of asking, “Which one?” is something I never thought would happen.
TVLINE | Actors, you just hope for that one job.
Well, maybe a year-and-a-half ago I was unemployed, I had $ 600 to my name, I was crashing on a friend’s couch, borrowing money to get to an audition — and lo and behold, that was Animal Kingdom Season 1. But it’s not that long ago. It still hasn’t set in.
TVLINE | Who would you in real life be friends with — Animal Kingdom‘s Renn (above), Blood Drive‘s Grace or Valor‘s Warrant Officer Nora Madani?
Ooooh…. Probably Renn. Yeah, even though she was a smaller part for me, I think she is maybe less “stuck up” in a certain way. [Laughs]
TVLINE |Blood Drive was shot on a shoestring budget, all the way in Cape Town, you were caked with blood for maybe 60, 75 percent of the time…. What was most challenging about that project for you?
The challenge came with tackling such a deeper, big part. I went from working maybe one day every four weeks for a couple of scenes in one episode, to working all day, every day. Learning about stamina and my own work discipline, learning what I’m good at, what I’m not…. that was a big challenge. And then there’s the blood. There are three types, and each has its own challenges, depending on budget and purposes. [Laughs] You have the sticky blood, you have the dried blood, and you have the mouth blood — that you can eat.
TVLINE | Were you disheartened to find out that Grace’s mission would not lead to a warm, fuzzy reunion with her sister? Or did you know from go?
I knew the end game from Day 1. Because of the format of the show — we went straight to series — we had all the scripts ahead of time. Also, before I signed on they w anted to make sure I was comfortable knowing exactly what I would have to be doing on the job. I mean, there’s anal [sex] in the pilot, and all sorts of things that were pushing boundaries in a lot of ways. They wanted to make sure we were all drinking the Kool-Aid, that we were all on board to have fun and do this outlandish show. That was one of the reasons why they gave us our full character arc, before we even left for South Africa.
TVLINE | So you knew that at some point Old Man Heart would peel off his face to reveal cute-but-psycho Karma.
Yes. And how lucky did we get, because initially another actor was attached and fell through. We could not find another Old Man Heart, but then Sean [Cameron Mitchell, Black Sails] came in and scooped up that role and was such a powerhouse.
TVLINE | He was perfect, like a sinister Colonel Sanders.
That’s a good analogy. [Laughs] I like that comparison.
TVLINE | This is almost rhetorical, but at any point during filming would you look at Alan Ritchson (who plays Arthur), look at Colin Cunningham (Slink), and remark to each other, “This is so f—ked up”?
Whenever we would get to set and see what they had done with it, or we would do rehearsal for the first time, there was such a — pardon my French — “What the f—k are we doing?!” moment and we loved it. We relished those moments, because they were kind of the ones that we would push the most with, and have the most fun with. “Oh yeah, of course she has this weird robotic arm that’s fisting Christopher. Duh! What else would she have?” They got crazier and crazier and every week you think, “OK, we’ve done the shock value, there’s nothing else they could pull out of our asses to surprise the audience.
And then James Roland or the production designer would come up with something that would just take it to a whole new level.
TVLINE | Or even just be bizarre. As I was saying to Colin, Slink’s living room there with the dentist’s chair….
Can we take a second to just acknowledge how fantastic and phenomenal Colin is in that role? That was not on the page.
TVLINE | James told me how for his audition tape he had vape smoke trickling out of his mouth.
It was unbelievable. It was wonderful. And again, not on the page. He totally devoured that role.
TVLINE | What can we expect from the finale? Is it sufficiently bananas?
It’s bananas. It’s also a culmination of everything you’ve been waiting for, all the storylines, all the plot twists. Everything sort of comes together in this really epic, final throwdown. The characters you hopefully love are banding together and becoming enemies again, and then coming together again and having to do battle…
TVLINE | Is any kind of door left open for more Blood Drive? I know James said he might franchise out the Midnight Grindhouse brand.
With the way that things are going, and with the amount of different platforms, and given the support we’ve had from Syfy and UCP, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were something that kind of lends itself to continuing within that world. I don’t know about a second season; everybody asks, but I don’t know. We have no news, which we’re assuming is good news! But I speak for myself and I hope most of the cast when I say that that even if not for a whole second season, we would be honored and lucky to tackle these roles again — whether they take it the anthology route, or a movie, or a streaming thing.
TVLINE | As you moved on to do The CW’s Valor (costarring Matt Barr), did you find yourself having to rein in the occasional expletive?
Oh, 100 percent. I curse like a trucker now thanks to Grace. Not that I didn’t before, but now every third word is an F-bomb. It’s been a little bit challenging, because I obviously I’m on a network that does not allow that kind of terminology when referring to another human being. [Laughs] But I think that Nora Madani has an underlying current of fighter that I picked up from playing Grace. So what I learned by the end of [Blood Drive] Episode 13, I was able to then bring to Nora.
TVLINE |Valor of course is new frontier for The CW, being a military drama. No supernatural elements, no costumed superheroes. Does that make the venture just that much more scary for a cast member? Knowing that that’s possiby working against it?
I can’t speak for the rest of the cast, but…. Animal Kindgom was a departure for TNT. And Blood Drive certainly was a departure for Syfy. And now Valor is a big departure from the kind 0f content that is normally attributed to The CW. I love being part of a team, a community of people, willing to take a risk. I wouldn’t change it for the world. I would much rather be on Valor than on something that’s almost a pre-sold, done deal.
TVLINE | And [CW president] Mark [Pedowitz] has been wanting a military drama for a while.
Yeah, he’s been very enthusiastic. Hopefully it’s reflective of the audience that he wants to cater to.
TVLINE | We do have three new military dramas this fall — The Brave on NBC, SEAL Team on CBS….
I haven’t heard of them! [Laughs]
TVLINE | Yeah, yeah. What do you think will help Valor stand out, set it apart?
Obviously the female protagonism is very important for our show versus the other ones. And I also think that the other shows are action-driven, or story-driven, or plot-driven; ours is very much character-driven. There’s a different cadence to what we’re putting out there. Having a show like this, where the interpersonal relationships are really at the forefront versus the mission or the action, is a bit different, I think. The wrapper is still action and plot and story, but really the heart of it is all character.

“As for the deployment of six (THAAD) launchers, South Korea and the US will make a decision after consultations,” Ministry of National Defense spokesman Moon Sang-gyun said during a Monday press briefing, as quoted by Yonhap news agency.
“Such discussion is currently going on, but further consultations are needed for the specific issues of when and how,” he added.
It comes after North Korea’s Friday test launch of a missile which Seoul and Washington believe was an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).
South Korean President Moon Jae-in ordered that four remaining interception missile launchers be “temporarily” deployed while environmental assessments continue to take place.
That order reversed a previous decision to stall the deployment of the remaining launchers, after concerns were raised about their environmental impact. Two THAAD launchers are already operational at a new United States Forces Korea (USFK) base in Seongji, some 300km (186 miles) southeast of Seoul.
“Full-swing discussions with the US will also start soon for the deployment of additional launchers,” Moon said.
While Seoul and Washington continue to aggressively respond to North Korean missile launches, Russia’s Defense Ministry said its tracking of the Friday launch showed that it was not an ICBM, but rather a “medium-range ballistic missile.”
On Saturday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said Pyongyang was “years and years away” from obtaining a viable nuclear device.
Russia and China have long voiced their opposition to deploying the THAAD missile defense system in South Korea, with Moscow saying it would merely serve as an “additional destabilizing factor for the region.” Beijing considers the system a threat to its own security, and also maintains it will not contribute to the easing of tensions with Pyongyang.
The US and Seoul have maintained that the system – which is designed to intercept short, medium, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles during their terminal flight phase – is purely for defense purposes and poses no threat to China.
Meanwhile, Washington appears to have no intention of changing its rhetoric against North Korea, with Vice President Mike Pence stating on Sunday that “all options are on the table” when it comes to countering the threat posed by Pyongyang.
“The era of strategic patience is over. The president of the United States is leading a coalition of nations to bring pressure to bear until that time that North Korea will permanently abandon its nuclear and ballistic missile program,” Pence said.
The US ambassador to the United Nations echoed Pence’s words on Sunday, saying“the time for talk is over” when it comes to North Korea.
The comments came after the US flew two B-1B bombers over the Korean Peninsula on Sunday, in a show of force following the Friday missile launch.

(Reuters) — An influential U.S. House committee on Thursday approved a revised bipartisan bill on a 54-0 vote that would speed the deployment of self-driving cars without human controls and bar states from blocking autonomous vehicles.
The bill would allow automakers to obtain exemptions to deploy up to 25,000 vehicles without meeting existing auto safety standards in the first year, a cap that would rise to 100,000 vehicles annually over three years.
Automakers and technology companies believe chances are good Congress will approve legislation before year end. They have been pushing for regulations making it easier to deploy self-driving technology, while consumer groups have sought more safeguards. Current federal rules bar self-driving cars without human controls on U.S. roads and automakers think proposed state rules in California are too restrictive.
The measure, the first significant federal legislation aimed at speeding self-driving cars to market, would require automakers to submit safety assessment reports to regulators, but would not require pre-market approval of advanced vehicle technologies.
The House of Representatives will take up the bill when it reconvenes in September, while senators plan to introduce a separate similar measure.
“Our aim was to develop a regulatory structure that allows for industry to safely innovate with significant government oversight,” said Representative Greg Walden, who chairs the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
Initially, authors proposed to allow automakers and others to sell up to 100,000 vehicles immediately. Representative Frank Pallone said the phase-in period was essential so “millions of exempted cars will not hit our roads all at once.”
Manufacturers must demonstrate self-driving cars winning exemptions are at least as safe as existing vehicles.
Under the House proposal, states could still set rules on registration, licensing, liability, insurance and safety inspections, but could not set self-driving car performance standards.
Automakers praised committee passage, while Consumer Watchdog privacy director John Simpson said preempting state laws “leaves us at the mercy of manufacturers as they use our public highways as their private laboratories.”
General Motors Co, Alphabet Inc, Tesla Inc, Volkswagen AG and others have been lobbying for legislation to speed deployment of self-driving cars. Consumer advocates want more changes, including giving the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration quicker access to crash data and more funding to oversee self-driving cars.
The issue has taken on new urgency since U.S. road deaths rose 7.7 percent in 2015, the highest annual jump since 1966.
Automakers say that without changes in regulations, U.S. self-driving car testing could move to Europe and elsewhere.
]]>“The deployment of the US THAAD missile defense system in South Korea does serious damage to the strategic security interests of all countries in the region, including China and Russia, and disrupts the regional strategic balance,” Xi warned ahead of his visit to Moscow in an interview with TASS news agency and the Rossiyskya Gazeta daily.
The Chinese president also said that this move would not help denuclearize Pyongyang in any way and would by no means contribute to maintaining stability and peace in the region as it would only provoke further tensions. He added that Beijing already repeatedly expressed its deep concern over this issue.
Moscow and Beijing have a “similar view on the nature of the THAAD deployment and its negative impact” on the situation in the region, the Chinese leader also said, adding that the two countries maintain a close cooperation in dealing with this security problem.
“Russia and China would take adequate measures to ensure their national security and strategic balance in the region both in cooperation with each other and on their own,” Xi told the Russian media.
He then once again called on the “relevant parties to stop THAAD deployment to the Republic of Korea and back away from this decision,” apparently addressing the US and Korean leadership.
The Chinese leader also said that the crisis on the Korean Peninsula should be resolved only through dialogue that would take into account the “reasonable concerns” of all parties involved. He then suggested using a “two-track approach” that would involve both gradual nuclear disarmament of North Korea and cessation of the massive joint US-South Korean drills in the region.
China has repeatedly expressed its opposition to the THAAD deployment in South Korea. In early June, it said it was “gravely concerned” by reports that four extra THAAD launchers were delivered to South Korea.
The THAAD battery sent to South Korea was equipped with two launchers out of a maximum capacity of six when it was deployed in March. The stealthy delivery of the additional four launchers brings the system up to full strength.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who assumed office in May, even ordered a probe into his country’s Defense Ministry after it was revealed that it had “intentionally dropped the introduction of four more (THAAD) launchers [from] its report.”
However, he also told visiting US Senator Dick Durbin on Wednesday that the Defense Ministry probe was a “purely a domestic measure,” which was “not about trying to change the existing decision or sending a message to the US,” and even sent his top security aide to Washington to reassure the US authorities that THAAD won’t be scrapped.
Beijing remains unconvinced that THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) is needed to protect South Korea from a potential nuclear threat posed by the North, the US claims. However, China believes it highly likely that the Americans will use the anti-missile system’s powerful radar to monitor its military activities.
On June 1, China urged the US to pull the THAAD system out of South Korea, following the reports of its secret deployment. Russia shares China’s worries about the presence of a US anti-missile system in South Korea. In June, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia will not leave this move without response, explaining Russia’s own military build-up in the region.
“This issue is a major concern for us and we have been constantly voicing it for decades. This disrupts the strategic balance in the world. But the world is silent and nobody listens to us,” Putin said at that time.
