Captain…we have a problem.
Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth have both walked away from Star Trek 4 following failed salary negotiations. Pine was going to reprise his role as Captain James T. Kirk for the fourth time. Hemsworth was going to return via time travel as Kirk’s father, who was introduced in the 2009 reboot’s memorable prologue. What happens next, especially since the rest of the cast is still on board, remains uncertain.
The Hollywood Reporter has the story, and it offers up a dark side to a franchise built upon hope and optimism. After all, money doesn’t exist in the utopian world created by Gene Roddenberry over 50 years ago…but it sure as hell exists right here and now, and Pine and Hemsworth felt they weren’t getting enough of it to step aboard the bridge again. Or rather, they felt Paramount was not honoring an existing deal.
According to THR, the actors and their reps “insist they have deals in place and that the studios are reneging on them, forcing them to take pay cuts as they try to budget a movie that is following a mediocre performer.” That mediocre performer is Star Trek Beyond, a very good movie that massively underperformed when it opened in 2016. That film grossed $ 343 million worldwide, but it cost $ 190 million. That’s not a great ratio when other franchise films regularly cross the $ 1 billion mark these days.
Still, it’s hard to blame Pine and Hemsworth for sticking to their guns and walking away if they’re not getting paid what they believe they should be paid. If you want to point fingers at someone, point them at Paramount.
So what does this mean for Star Trek 4? Well, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg and John Cho are all expected to close their deals and return as Uhura, Spock, Dr. McCoy, Scotty, and Sulu, respectively. It’s possible that Kirk and his father could be recast. It’s also possible that Pine and Hemsworth return to the negotiating table and everything gets worked out. It’s also possible that they split the difference – cough up the cash for Pine since he’s the face of the rebooted franchise and recast his dearly departed dad with someone less expensive.
In any case, I’ll just come right out and say it: this flat-out sucks. I’ve been critical of the new Trek movies, but two of them have been winners, overcoming their flaws to reflect what makes this series so damn special. Pine did the impossible – he proved that someone else was capable of filling William Shatner’s boots. And Hemsworth’s entire career was built on his powerful scenes as George Kirk and seeing him return would have been a thrill. Then there’s the rest of the crew, played to perfection by a perfectly cast ensemble who give new life to beloved characters. I’d watch a Star Trek 4 starring everyone but Kirk, but would Paramount even consider making that?
It’s especially a bummer since Star Trek 4 was going to mark the first time a female director was going to steer a Trek movie. What does this mean for S.J. Clarkson? Will she stick around if things have to get retooled?
Anyway, it’s not like this spells the end of Star Trek. The recent series Star Trek: Discovery is returning for its second season next year and there’s a new TV show starring Patrick Stewart, reprising his role as Captain Picard, in the pipeline. And Pine has the Wonder Woman movies and Hemsworth has Thor and the rest of the cast are in high-demand. In the end, nothing and no one is irreparably damaged.
But still, it was a thrill to see Trek back on the big screen ever couple of years. I’ll cross my fingers and hope they can work this one out.

Iran and Morocco have departed the World Cup to a chorus of praise after they produced thrilling performances to take heavyweights Portugal and Spain to the wire in the final round of Group B games.
Both Iran and Morocco teams played a full part in a sensational climax to Group B before settling for draws in their respective games against Portugal and Spain.
Morocco already knew their they were eliminated going into their final game against Spain in Kaliningrad, but that did not stop them from producing a thrilling display that saw them set for victory until Iago Aspas scored an injury time equalizer.
The plaudits poured in for a team that departed Russia with 1 point from three games but with praise ringing in their ears for a brave display of attacking verve.
Loved watching Morocco and Iran. So enjoyable and took it to the bigger teams on the last day. I'll miss them.

Iran faced Portugal in Saransk and ran Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. mightily close after coming from behind to equalize and almost snatching a dramatic win that would have seen them qualify for the last 16, before ultimately having to settle for 1-1.

Iranians and fans of the team showed their pride on social media after the game.
Iran can be EXTREMELY proud of their World Cup campaign. Narrowly lost to Spain, beat Morocco and came mighty close to knocking out Portugal tonight. They've given absolutely everything, as have their fans 🇮🇷

Both Iran and Morocco played with a vigor that belied their underdog status against their more fancied opponents, and many felt they even better their European rivals with the football they showed.
Spain and Portugal win the group, but the real heroes are Morocco and Iran. Both teams played much more inspiring football than these two European giants. Sad that we have to wait another four years before seeing them play again in the World Cup. Bravo! 🇮🇷🇲🇦👏

Fair play Morocco and Iran. Made a group many would have considered a procession other than a battle for first one of the most engaging of the World Cup. Morocco deserved more in every match.

Iran and Morocco: you went against two of the best teams in the world and played with such honor and passion. Never underestimate.

Spain topped the group thanks to their draw, setting up a last 16 tie against hosts Russia on July 1 in Moscow, while Portugal’s draw means they face Group A winners Uruguay in Sochi on June 30.

]]>Faraday Future is having a tough year. The electric automotive startup began 2017 cutting its planned 7-car line down to 2 vehicles before scaling down the size of – and then suspending – a planned $ 1 billion Nevada production facility. Today brings more woes, as news emerged that three top executives are leaving or have already left Faraday, including chief financial officer Stefan Krause.
Krause came to Faraday in March after holding executive roles at BMW group and Duetsche Bank. Sources toldJalopnik that during his short tenure as CFO, Krause did attract some potential investors, but they reportedly balked when a stipulation wasn’t met: Faraday’s main financier, entrepreneur and LeEco founder Jia Yueting, give up control – which he refused. Krause quietly left Faraday last month, but the news was confirmed today.
Accompanying him out the door are two other senior executives, according to The Verge. The first is Ulrich Kranz, another BMW veteran who joined Faraday in July, and the other is Bill Strickland, head of vehicle manufacturing who formerly headed the Ford Fusion program. It’s the latest in a string of executive exits from the struggling company, including a pair of its founding execs a few months ago.
The Verge‘s report paints a bleak picture for Faraday, with sources describing it as a sinking ship with low workforce morale. The company is reportedly bringing in some new talent, including an executive who describes himself on LinkedIn as a “crisis management expert” to run communications, as well as a soon-to-be-announced global head of tax.

We’re guessing this is the big Designated Survivor twist Kiefer Sutherland’s been alluding to: Natascha McElhone, who plays first lady to Sutherland’s POTUS on the ABC thriller, is departing the series in Season 2, TVLine has confirmed.
Twenty-five of the refugees departed a male-only camp on Papua New Guinea’s Manus Island, Refugee Action Coalition spokesman Ian Rintoul said, as cited by AP. They will arrive in the US via the Philippines and Qatar, and will settle in population centers including in Atlanta, Georgia, according to the Daily Telegraph.
An additional 27 refugees flew to Port Moresby on Wednesday from a camp in Nauru, he said. They will arrive in Los Angeles via the Philippines, Qatar and Chicago.
The US State Department said it expected 54 refugees from Nauru and Papua New Guinea to arrive in the country in the coming days. The origin of the two additional refugees remains unclear.
The deal is part of an agreement from the Barack Obama administration, in which the former US president agreed to accept up to 1,250 of Australia’s refugees, mostly from Iran, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.
The arrangement is in return for Australia agreeing to accept Honduran and Salvadoran refugees under a US-led resettlement program from a camp in Costa Rica.
Trump has called the deal “dumb” and “horrible,” but agreed to honor it while vowing to conduct “extreme vetting” on the new arrivals prior to their departure from the camps.
Do you believe it? The Obama Administration agreed to take thousands of illegal immigrants from Australia. Why? I will study this dumb deal!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 2, 2017
The US president’s true feelings were made public last month, when a leaked phone transcript revealed that Trump told Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull that he “hates taking these people.”
“I guarantee you they are bad. That is why they are in prison right now. They are not going to be wonderful people who go on to work for the local milk people,” he said, according to the transcript.
Meanwhile, the future of the asylum seekers left behind at the camps remains unknown, as more than 2,000 currently live at the sites. Some of them have called the camps home for more than four years.
“People [in the camps] are happy that these people have gone, but the big question is what happens to the rest?” Rintoul said.
Australia refuses to settle asylum seekers who try to arrive to the country by boat, with the government claiming the policy dissuades refugees from attempting the dangerous crossing from Indonesia, bringing an end to people-smuggling operations.
Instead, Australia pays Papua New Guinea and Nauru to house asylum seekers in the camps, which have been plagued by reports of abuse and horrible living conditions.

“The American side has made a move which, it is important to note, hasn’t been provoked by anything, to worsen Russian-US relations. [It includes] unlawful restrictions, attempts to influence other states of the world, including our allies, who are interested in developing and keeping relations with Russia,” Putin told channel host, Vladimir Solovyov, Sunday.
“We’ve been waiting for quite a long time that maybe something would change for the better, we had hopes that the situation would change. But it looks like, it’s not going to change in the near future… I decided that it is time for us to show that we will not leave anything unanswered,” the Russian president added.
Earlier this week, following the US Congress’ approval of new sanctions against Russia, Iran and North Korea, the Russian foreign ministry announced that Moscow told Washington to reduce the number of its diplomatic staff in Russia to 455 people.
The number of US diplomatic service staff in Russia was ordered to be reduced in order to equal the number of Russian diplomats in the US by September 1. As of now, it “greatly exceeds” the number of Russia’s embassy staff in the US, the ministry said. The American diplomatic mission includes more than 1,200 personnel.
“From the perspective of a working diplomatic mission, [the measure] is fairly sensitive,” Putin said.
The Russian leader went on to say that there is a number of “important spheres of cooperation” between Moscow and Washington, which he hoped would not suffer because of America’s anti-Russian policies. Those mostly include the joint fight against terrorism, obligations in nuclear arms control, and space projects rather than economic relations, Putin said.
Moscow has much wider trade and economic relations with China, the EU and other countries than with the US, the president added.
Putin however underlined that Moscow and Washington had recently reached “concrete” results in de-escalating the crisis in war-torn Syria, which are in the interests of the entire Middle East region.
“We also work together on fighting illegal migration and organized crime in a broad sense. There are also issues of cybersecurity,” Putin pointed out, having also referred to joint Russia-US scientific projects in space, such as plans to jointly explore Venus.
“The main thing is, that we have a multi-faceted cooperation in many fields. Of course, Moscow has a lot to say and there is a number of spheres of cooperation that we could potentially cut and it would be sensitive for the US side. But I think we shouldn’t do it. It would harm development of international relations. I hope it won’t get to that point. As of today, I’m against it.“
