We’ve got a lot of Servant questions. Like, was the Turners’ baby really Jericho? Why can’t Sean and Julian stop lying? And is the creepy doll actually a poltergeist from hell? Hey, on this show, anything’s possible. Season 2 of the psychological horror series premiered Friday on Apple TV+, and as you probably could’ve guessed, we didn’t exactly get the answers we’ve been craving. With Jericho (or whoever) gone missing, Dorothy and Sean are in panic mode, as nanny Leanne — who may or may not have supernatural powers that possibly revived Jericho — remains on the lam, too. (Sound crazy? Oh, it is.) Dorothy, however, remained hopeful, devising a 72-hour game plan she hoped would guide her to the truth… which, of course, she may not even be able to accept. Despite her laser focus, Sean and Julian continued prolonging a whole mess of lies and ethical problems for the Turners, as the couple remained desperate to reunite their family and quell their pain. Here, TVLine talks to Lauren Ambrose, who plays Dorothy, about the season’s tense premiere, the couple’s refusal to grieve and why Dorothy’s delusions have made her a “woman on a mission.” TVLINE | Before we dive into the premiere, what drew you to this project, and what was your first impression of the scripts you read? TVLINE | Considering that Dorothy’s version of the truth is very questionable, how do you approach playing such a traumatized, damaged character? TVLINE | With Jericho missing in the Season 2 opener, Natalie tells Sean and Julian that it’s a chance to finally let Dorothy grieve, but is it too late for them to back their way out of this whole thing? Maybe this couple’s real problem is that they refuse to grieve. Dorothy is doing it in this very big and cuckoo way, and Sean is doing it as well by perpetuating the story. Maybe she’s criticizing him in that moment on a deeper, unconscious level for the lies and for not facing the reality of it or helping her face the reality of it. TVLINE | Julian anonymously sends Dorothy a baby bootie with a message that reads, “Tell no one. Baby lives.” Why give Dorothy false hope when she’s already been through so much pain? TVLINE | Sean not only finds the discarded doll, but brings it inside and gives it a bath. What’s your take on that? TVLINE | Oh, they do! Can you give us a little tease about what’s in store for Dorothy this season? There were definitely times when I was like, “How do I maintain sympathy for this character with what she does?” Ultimately, I always come back to: She will do anything to save her child or get her child back, and that she is a good mother, despite all of her varied flaws. The 63-year-old star is currently promoting his new movie The Equalizer 2 and was asked what the last film to make him cry was, revealing it was one of this year’s Marvel epics. Speaking with JOE.co.uk, Denzel replied: “Black Panther, I shed a tear. “I was sitting in there – I ran into Chad[wick Boseman] and Ryan [Coogler] before the movie started. “It was their premiere, or the screening in New York, and just talking to them and they went into the movie – and the 40 years I’ve been in this game came back to me.” Denzel continued: “I said, ‘Man, look at these young boys, man.’ “And I actually, I just started (crying). I was like, whew. “You know, Sidney, to now? And I’m in the gap – me and many others –are in the gap, but it was like, man. I felt like the third leg of the relay race. “Like, here, go. Now, I ran behind them – I’m still running. But I was like, man, they gone. They’re gone.” Smith continued: “You guys have challenged and potentially even shattered a lot of long-time, long-held, false Hollywood beliefs and paradigms. “I just wanna say congratulations to you. I’m proud, I’m excited, damn near giddy. Congrats, y’all.” Black Panther will return in Avengers 4 next year.RELATED STORIES
I thought it was a very strange premise and a fascinating character… a tragic character. She’s got so much going on. She’s hiding so much and broadcasting so much and wearing this crazy mask and refusing to look at reality. I was like, “Wow, I have no idea how to do that. That’ll be a challenge.” It’s a thriller, too, [and] I’ve never been in a thriller or a scary thing before. M. Night Shyamalan was in charge, so that seemed like good hands to be in. At the time, I was doing My Fair Lady on Broadway, and this was the polar opposite.
The job is to make the scene work. Someone who is delusional, they’re not delusional to them, they’re only delusional to the outside world. So as long as I have conviction in my actions and beliefs as the character, then I’m doing my job. Everybody else is going, “Oh my God, what are we going to do about this woman, she’s bananas, she thinks that doll is real,” and I’m there bouncing the dolly on my lap like, “What’s everybody’s problem? Why are you treating me like I’m nuts? There’s no problem here!”
There’s this deep web of lies at this point that they’re all wrapped into and invested in. I don’t know what they should do, but they continue to go along with it. That’s what’s interesting about this show: It explores these big feelings and ideas of what it is to be honest in a relationship, and the vulnerability of being a parent for the first time. And you can explore these ideas through the genre in a really different way. It reaches the pit of your stomach because these are all things we work on all day long as humans. But to explore it with this kind of storytelling is really fascinating to me.
TVLINE | Dorothy and Sean get into a huge fight, and she tells him, “I thought you’d be a better father than this.” Why does she come down so hard on him at that moment?
He’s in the midst of doubting his actions and [questioning] if she should be telling the truth or involving the police, or if he should be giving up this ruse that he and Rupert [Grint]’s character have been perpetuating with all these lies and problems. We turn away from the fragile vulnerability of “What’s going to happen? Is she going to wake up and recognize what happened?” Now she’s like Denzel! She’s a woman on a mission! “I’m getting my baby back, no matter what.” She’s problem-solving, and they just aren’t sure what to do. They’re sort of half-heartedly trying to figure it out, but mostly trying to cover up whatever wrong they’ve done. It’s very complicated. There are so many layers.
I think it’s actually to assuage her pain, and to say that there’s something to live for. That they’re going to find the baby and figure it all out together. There’s hope. But are the lies we tell each other good for our relationships or bad?
It’s a really interesting storyline for Sean’s character because he ends up having this faith crisis, which I think is such a beautiful story. He’s starting to believe and he’s starting to come around to this faith in something, something bigger than him and bigger than reality. So much of this show is about what lies between perception and reality, and whoever’s looking at the problem might see it in a different way, depending on how you’re bent and the way your mind thinks. You might see something that’s happening on the show as a miracle or supernatural phenomenon, or a coincidence, a very practical reason why the doors of the attic slam closed or whatever. I think Sean is coming around to having this opening of faith led by his wife’s conviction that they’re going to find this baby. He sort of doesn’t care who the baby is anymore. At this point, there was a real baby, and he wants that feeling back. He wants his family back. Maybe there’s an opportunity for that through some kind of magical, spiritual thing… through healing. I don’t know, I could be wrong, too! I’m sure the internet will have all kinds of other ideas!
With Dorothy, we turn away from “Is she going to wake up, and is the baby real?” At the end of Season 1, she sees the doll for what it is, and doesn’t accept it as her baby anymore. Now it’s like, “Who put this doll here? Where’s my baby?” Now she has a very practical problem, and it takes a darker, more supernatural turn at times, and definitely leans into the horror. For me, I had some really wild acting challenges. [M.] Night [Shyamalan] directs Episode 4, and that was a really wild episode that I read right before bed — I definitely shouldn’t have done that! That was one that really scared me. There’s a really cool face-off. Leanne and Dorothy have to work out their differences, and it’s a battle of wills: teenage power vs. maternal rage.

Sony
There’s always been an understanding on a Hollywood movie set: the director is king.
But that thinking gets a little blurred when a superstar actor is in the mix. Whether it is Tom Cruise or Meryl Streep, the director often has their job only because the star “okay’d” it.
If things go right, director and star work together, tolerate one another, and maybe even enjoy the experience enough to do it all over again on another movie. The latter is almost a definite if the actor receives Oscar acclaim.
So expect director Dan Gilroy and star Denzel Washington to work again.
The actor received a best actor Oscar nominations (his eighth Oscar nomination of his career) on Tuesday for his performance in “Roman J. Israel, Esq.” It was a role in which Gilroy let Washington into every facet of the production.
SonyThe process began when Gilroy got an idea for a movie about a lawyer who, for most of his career, has been fighting the causes of the underdog. However, when his partner (and the face of the firm) is taken ill and may not recover, the lawyer has to come out of the shadows. And then what he faces makes him question what he’s been fighting for his entire career.
But instead of pitching the idea to a studio — many of which had been knocking down Gilroy’s door to work with him after his hit directorial debut “Nightcrawler” — Gilroy took a year and a half and wrote the entire script on spec. Then he presented the completed script to the only actor he wanted for the movie: Denzel Washington.
Convinced only Washington could play the role, Gilroy promised himself that if Washington passed, he would throw the script in a drawer and move on.
“I’ve never written so specifically for an actor that if they passed on it I wouldn’t have done it,” Gilroy told Business Insider. “I always had a list of people I would have followed up with. This one I did not. I felt very strongly that the character is somebody who believes deeply in things, he’s someone who believes there’s something bigger than him, and Denzel is a guy who in real life believes in something bigger than himself. Him welding to that character was a quality I wouldn’t be able to find in another actor. I felt very strongly about that.”
Gilroy jumped through the usual rings: Getting the script to Washington’s reps, waiting patiently for a response, and shock when he got word several months later that Washington wanted to meet. In that meeting, Gilroy was even more shocked by the outcome.
“We sat down to have lunch and an hour into it he stuck out his hand and said, ‘Let’s do this movie together,’” Gilroy said.
Now Gilroy had a finished script and one of the greatest living actors packaged for his movie. Sony won the auction to make and release the movie.
A major reason for this entire journey to make the movie was because Gilroy wanted Washington to be a collaborator with him on “Roman J. Israel, Esq.” And not just in the creation of the title character, but in every facet of production.
SonyThe two broke down every part of the script and tweaked things to Washington’s suggestions. When the two took a break so Washington could go direct and star in “Fences,” Gilroy said Washington returned with an understanding about the character that had gone beyond his own. This included everything from the character’s look on screen to things he would say in the middle of a take.
“There’s a scene where he goes through a metal detector and before putting his iPod through it Denzel said the line, ‘I lost the bass range on Gil-Scott Heron’s ‘Winter in America’ last time I put this in there.’ That was a line Denzel came up with on the spot,” Gilroy said. “So the choice of song — that’s a very heavy song — but also apropos to what the guy is doing. He would do stuff like that in many scenes. I’m not looking for him to give that to me. There’s another scene when he’s looking for a job and he starts to cry. That wasn’t in the scene, but what he’s playing becomes real to him.”
But the collaboration didn’t end when filming stopped. Gilroy wanted Washington in the edit room with him as well.
“I couldn’t have really conceived before this of letting an actor come into the cutting room. Most actors are not objective,” Gilroy said. “But I knew I wanted him to come in and look at the character and in the process we started asking each other, do we need this scene? Should we trim this? Egos really got checked at the door.”
Gilroy believes he was so comfortable in welcoming Washington into all the phases of the movie because he’s been married to actress Rene Russo for 25 years. He said watching her prepare and craft parts for years has left him with a comfort with actors that many directors do not have.
However, another reason was he was only going to make “Roman J. Isreal, Esq.” with Washington, why wouldn’t he utilize him to the fullest?
“There are quite a few directors who would not welcome this process,” Gilroy said. “They would want to tell the actor their vision. I feel for myself, as much as I trust my instincts, you lose a tremendous asset when you’re working with a great actor and you’re not listening and rethinking or realizing this can be approved upon. I wanted to create a space that Denzel felt comfortable creating in. That was my biggest thing.”

Varietyreports the two-time Oscar winner will star in next spring’s production of Eugene O’Neill’s The Iceman Cometh for super-producer Scott Rudin. Rudin also mounted Washington’s last two Broadway revivals: the 2010 production of Fences, which the actor then directed for last year’s film adaptation (above), and the 2014 production of A Raisin in the Sun (which Denzel was just a taaaad too old for, but you didn’t hear it from me.) Both productions won Tonys for Best Revival.
O’Neill’s Iceman was originally staged in 1946, and its three-plus hour length, coupled with the complexity of the leading role of Theodore “Hickey” Hickman – an alcoholic salesman – has made it a bucket-list play for many an actor. Though the original production was indifferently received, a 1956 off-Broadway production starring Jason Robards affirmed the play’s greatness. Robards would reprise the role for a TV production (directed by Sidney Lumet) and again for a 1985 Broadway revival; other stage and film productions have featured Lee Marvin, Brian Dennehy, Kevin Spacey, Nathan Lane, and James Earl Jones.
Washington’s iteration of Iceman will begin previews on March 22, 2018, and is set to open on April 26 at the Jacobs Theater.
