The US is worried that “unilateral” military action against its proxy forces might jeopardize its foothold in Syria, claiming that the Kurds are vital in the battle against IS, as Turkey vows to get rid of “separatist terrorists.”

Despite major breakthroughs in the battle against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorists and in the ongoing reconciliation process in Syria, the US has repeatedly made clear its intention to remain in the country indefinitely, pledging to continue to back the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to counter Bashar Assad and Iranian influence in the Kurdish-dominated part of Syria. The presence of some 2,000 US military ‘advisors’ in the country has not only angered Damascus, but has also placed Ankara in direct confrontation with its NATO ally, especially after US-backed fighters attempted to set up parallel government structures.

To get rid of what he called a “separatist terrorist organization” east of the Euphrates, where the US-supported YPG Kurdish militia of the SDF now controls much of the territory, the Turkish president on earlier this week promised to launch a new military campaign in Syria “within a matter of days.”

Washington, keen to protect its interest in the area, has –somewhat hypocritically– warned Ankara against launching a “unilateral” military campaign that might endanger US soldiers, who have recently established observation posts along the Turkish-Syrian border. Kurds, the Pentagon stressed, remain a “committed partner” in Washington’s fight against Islamic State.

“Unilateral military action into northeast Syria by any party, particularly as US personnel may be present or in the vicinity, is of grave concern,” Commander Sean Robertson, a Pentagon spokesman, said in a statement. “We would find any such actions unacceptable.”

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, however, believes that there is not much of a threat from the crippled Islamic State in Syria anymore, and that the Turkish military has the right to act to get rid of what he called a “terrorist corridor” forming alongside its border. “It is time to realize our decision to wipe out terror groups east of the Euphrates,” Erdogan said.

It is clear that the purpose of these US observation posts is not to protect our country from terrorists but to protect terrorists from Turkey.

“Our target is not the American soldiers, it is the terror organizations that are active in the region,” Erdogan added in a televised speech, which triggered a strong response from the Pentagon.

Ankara has already conducted two major offensives in northern Syria with the help of the Turkish-backed Free Syrian Army. Earlier this year, Turkey launched Operation Olive Branch in northwestern Syria after the US announced its renewed commitment to maintaining support of the predominantly-Kurdish militia with training and weapons. Another cross-border incursion by the Turkish military, called Operation Euphrates Shield, was held from August 2016 to March 2017 with the aim of driving out IS terrorists, and the US-backed forces away from the border.

Belgium’s Gaming Commission has ruled that loot boxes—in-game purchases where what you receive is randomized and only known once you open the box—are gambling. The country’s minister of justice, Koen Geens, has said that he wants to see them banned Europe-wide, reports PC Gamer (and, in Dutch, VTM Nieuws).

Amid outcry over the use of loot boxes in Overwatch and Star Wars Battlefront 2, the Belgian Gaming Commission decided last week to look into the issue, with Commission Director Peter Naessens specifically saying that the combination of paying money and receiving something “dependent on chance” prompted the investigation. Rather swiftly, it seems, the Commission has made its decision.

In October, the US’ Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rejected calls to classify loot boxes as gambling. It told Kotaku that since players receive some reward from opening the loot box—even if it’s useless or unwanted—that it’s not gambling. As such, loot box games will receive neither ESRB’s “Real Gambling” nor “Simulated Gambling” labels, the former of which automatically gives a game an “Adults Only” rating. Many retailers refuse to sell A-O games, so giving every title that uses loot boxes such a rating would likely be harmful to their sales.

President Bashar Assad’s government has once again condemned the indiscriminate bombardment by the US-led coalition which continues to kill civilians and destroy the country’s infrastructure, while at the same time, hampering Damascus’ anti-terrorist efforts.

The Syrian government expresses “strong condemnation” of the ongoing attacks against civilians carried out as part of US-led Operation Inherent Resolve, the Permanent Mission of the Syrian Arab Republic to the UN said in its latest communication addressed to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council.

Syria accused the “rogue coalition” of adding “new bloody massacres” to their records of “war crimes and crimes against humanity.”

The letter stated that just this Saturday, the US-led coalition was operating in residential areas in the al-Duwaiji village, Deir ez-Zor, killing 10 civilians, wounding “scores,” and causing “massive material damage” to local civilian infrastructure. It further claimed that coalition jets targeted a paramedic vehicle on its way to help the injured, killing everyone inside.

Damascus is further dismayed and alarmed over countries who claim to be vigilant about the rule of law and human rights turning a blind eye to the “massacres” being committed in Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor, SANA reported, citing the contents of the letters.

As troops of the so-called Syrian Democratic Force (SDF) continue their US-led military operation in the northeast of the country, the Syrian government remains firm in their “suspicion” that the US-led bombing campaign, and its support for opposition groups on the ground, are coordinated campaigns to help Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorists attack government forces. The letters noted that IS attacks on government positions continue to come from areas where the US coalition’s proxy forces are deployed.

Furthermore, Syria believes that the ongoing airstrikes are aimed at derailing the Syrian Army’s progress against IS terrorists. The Syrian government called on the UN to take “immediate” action to “stop the brutal crimes perpetrated by the illegal ‘coalition’… And to prevent further crimes and attacks on the Syrian people as well as [on] the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria.”

Leading technology-sector bosses denounced President Donald Trump’s move Tuesday to end a program that had prevented the deportation of so-called “Dreamers,” people who illegally came to the US as children.

Apple chief Tim Cook told employees in an e-mail that “We issue an urgent plea for our leaders in Washington to protect the Dreamers so their futures can never be put at risk in this way again.” Cook has tweeted that 250 people who are Dreamers work for Apple.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg took to his social media network, saying Trump’s decision was “cruel.”

The former independent counsel who investigated former president Bill Clinton in the 1990s slammed President Donald Trump in a Washington Post op-ed Thursday for his “wildly inappropriate” public comments about Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Kenneth Starr, who also served as US solicitor general and a federal judge, urged Trump to “cut it out” and said his behavior is damaging to the presidency and inimical to the rule of law.

“An honorable man whom I have known since his days as a US attorney in Alabama, Jeff Sessions has recently become your piñata in one of the most outrageous — and profoundly misguided — courses of presidential conduct I have witnessed in five decades in and around the nation’s capital,” Starr said.

“The attorney general is not — and cannot be — the president’s ‘hockey goalie.'”

Starr’s op-ed follows Trump’s week-long public tirade against Sessions, during which he told The New York Times he would not have selected Sessions as attorney general had he known Sessions would recuse himself from the Russia investigation.

Trump has also called Sessions “VERY weak” and “beleaguered” in tweets, prompting speculation that Trump may be attempting to bully Sessions into resigning. Sessions has said he intends to remain in his position “as long as that is appropriate.”

“Mr. President, for the sake of the country, and for your own legacy, please listen to the growing chorus of voices who want you to succeed — by being faithful to the oath of office you took on Jan. 20 and by upholding the traditions of a nation of laws, not of men,” Starr wrote.

Although hostile relationships between presidents and their top law enforcement officials are not uncommon — Clinton and Attorney General Janet Reno were at odds over Starr’s role investigating the Monica Lewinsky scandal, for instance — presidents tend to avoid taking their feuds public lest they give the appearance of interfering in independent investigations.

In his op-ed, Starr urged Trump not to view himself as a client of the attorney general.

“The attorney general’s client is ultimately “We the People,” and his fidelity has to be not to the president but to the Constitution and other laws of the United states,” Starr said. “Indeed, the attorney general’s job, at times, is tell the president ‘no’ because of the supervening demands of the law.”

White House press secretary Sean Spicer on Tuesday denounced “in the strongest terms” a new wave of bomb threats to Jewish community centers and Anti-Defamation League offices across the United States.

Spicer began his daily press briefing by acknowledging the wave of threats on Tuesday, which is at least the fourth against Jewish organizations since January.

“According to some reports there have been over 100 bomb threats phoned into Jewish institutions since the start of this year alone,” he said. “We denounce these latest anti-Semitic and hateful threats in the strongest terms.”

Jewish community centers in at least five states and multiple offices of the Anti-Defamation League reported bomb threats on Tuesday. ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt counted the threats as the latest addition to 121 threats received by Jewish organizations since January.

“It’s incredibly saddening that I have to continue to share these disturbing reports with you, and I share the President’s thoughts that he fervently hopes that we don’t continue to have to share these reports with you,” Spicer said. “But as long as they do continue we will continue to condemn them and look at ways in which we can stop them.”
