The Spanish midfielder, 25, has moved on loan until the rest of the season with an option to make it permanent in the summer. Barca actually confirmed the deal on their website yesterday but were forced to remove their announcement after it was revealed the finer details were yet to be finalised. But that has now been done and Arsenal have finally signed a player they have been tracking since the very beginning of the January transfer window. Suarez joins up with Arsenal manager Unai Emery for the second time in his career having worked under him while the pair were at Sevilla. Emery said he was delighted to finally get his man and believes his versatility will be a huge boost to the squad. “We are very happy that Denis Suarez is joining us,” he said. “He is a player we know well and I have worked with him at Sevilla. He brings us quality and options in many different attacking positions, so he’ll be able to help the team.” Suarez said it was a dream come true to join a club he supported as a boy and is looking to follow in the footsteps of some of greatest players in the club’s history. “One thing no one knows about me is that when I was little and I used to watch the Premier League on the TV, Arsenal were a team that really inspired me,” he said. “I used to watch (Dennis) Bergkamp and (Thierry) Henry – they’re both legends of the club and hopefully we can follow in their footsteps.” Suarez becomes Arsenal’s first signing of the winter window and it remains to be seen heather they will do any more business before the deadline at 11pm today. They remain keen on Inter Milan’s Ivan Persicv but time is running out as the two teams are nowhere near agreeing on the terms of the deal. Perisic wants to move and handed in a transfer request at the weekend but Arsenal can only afford a loan deal with an option to buy. Inter are understood to be holding out for a permanent transfer or a guarantee that Arsenal will sign him in the summer at the very least. The Gunners have also been linked with a shock late move for Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye. Gueye is wanted by Paris Saint-Germain, who submitted a £21million offer last week. That offer was rejected because it falls below there £40m valuation but Gueye then wrote to club chiefs and begged them to let him leave. Arsenal are said to be willing to pay the asking price if they can take him now and pay the fee in the summer. The Gunners are also still tracking PSG midfielder Christopher Nkunku but that could be complicated if they do pursue a move for Gueye. PSG are said to be willing to let Nkunku go but only if they can sign Gueye. Barcelona midfielder Suarez has been heavily linked with the Gunners throughout January but Emery served up a disappointing update to Arsenal fans when he revealed the club can only sign players on loan this month. The north London club have limited funds to improve their squad this month but with Suarez a peripheral figure in Catalonia, have been tipped to secure a temporary move. Arsenal have been linked with paying a loan fee to sign Suarez until the summer before recruiting the 25-year-old Spaniard on a permanent basis in the summer for less than £20million. The player himself dropped a major hint that he wants to move to the Premier League by liking a series of Arsenal-related posts on Instagram after they beat rivals Chelsea 2-0 at the Emirates. Emery’s side moved within three points of the Blues and the Champions League places thanks to first-half goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Laurent Koscielny. And afterwards Suarez liked a series posts on the social media site including ones from Bleacher Report, Koscielny and the Premier League all celebrating Arsenal’s win. Speaking after the match, Emery revealed that the club are doing their all in the market despite their lack of finances. Asked if he was close to securing Suarez’s arrival, Emery responded: “I know the club is working with different possibilities if [it] can help us for these four months for our competition. “I know it’s a difficult window for the transfer market and if a player is coming to help us I am happy. “But the club is doing that and I am going to wait.” Suarez will play no part in Barca’s La Liga clash with Leganes today, having been left out of the 24-man squad entirely. The former Villarreal attacker – who worked with Emery in a single season on loan at Sevilla – has only played 17 minutes of La Liga action this season. His only significant minutes have come in the Copa del Rey, with Barca open to letting the one-cap Spain international leave the Nou Camp this month. With Mesut Ozil unfancied by Emery – who opted not to use the German play-maker against Chelsea meaning he has not played since Boxing Day – and Aaron Ramsey set to leave the club at the end of his contract in the summer, Suarez would boost Arsenal’s options in the middle. Despite a huge win for their top-four hopes, Arsenal lost Hector Bellerin to a serious-looking injury against Chelsea. And Emery fears the right-back will be out for a prolonged period, despite having only just returned to Premier League action after a month out with a calf strain. The Spanish boss admitted: “We are going to wait tomorrow but it is his knee and the first prediction is that it can be an important injury but tomorrow or Monday the doctor will confirm. I hope not but it is not positive, our first impression. “We have Ainsley [Maitland-Niles], he is playing with good pieces, he played well today and he can help us playing like a right back or right winger and also [Stephan] Lichtsteiner is another player and I think we have players [to cope]. “Don’t forget [Carl] Jenkinson, he is with us he played some matches and if we need he is okay to help us.”
Nikoloz Basilashvili won his sixth straight match Tuesday, beating Canada's Denis Shapovalov 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of the Shanghai Masters. All three Canadians who were in the tournament are now eliminated. Also Tuesday, Vasek Pospisil fell to Australia's Alex de Minaur 6-4, 7-6 (4). On Monday, Milos Raonic, who was seeded 14th, lost to 81st-ranked Mackenzie McDonald of the United States 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. Basilashvili, who won the China Open last week and has moved up to a career-high ranking of No. 23, never faced a break point on his serve. The Georgian earned his first victory at the tournament after qualifying in 2015 and 2017. On Sunday, Basilashvili upset fourth-seeded Juan Martin del Potro in the final in Beijing. Earlier this year, he became the first Georgian man to win an ATP title when he won in Hamburg — playing as a qualifier. "It was a very good week for me in Beijing," Basilashvili said. "Since Hamburg I got a lot of confidence and that helped me in Beijing." Basilashvili will next play fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev in the second round. "It's very important I won today after Beijing because it gives me a lot of confidence for a big match that I have," Basilashvili said. "Sascha is a very good player and I think it's going to be a very difficult match for me, but very interesting. "I am feeling very fresh and have a lot of energy so I'll have no excuses." Daniil Medvedev, who upset Kei Nishikori to win the Japan Open on Sunday, struggled but beat Chinese wild-card entry Zhang Ze 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4 in the first round. Medvedev has won all three finals he has appeared in this year and did so by beating the home favourite. Besides beating Nishikori in Tokyo, he defeated de Minaur in Sydney and Steve Johnson in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Earlier, French qualifier Benoit Paire upset 15th-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3, 6-4.
Olympic figure skating medalist Denis Ten was killed Thursday, and prosecutors in Kazakhstan said they were treating the case as murder. Timothée Chalamet is in talks to join Denis Villenueve‘s Dune, an adaptation of the epic Frank Herbert sci-fi novel. The Call Me By Your Name star will play Paul Atreides, a character played by Kyle MacLachlan in David Lynch’s weirdo adaptation of the same novel.
Deadline has the scoop on Chalamet’s potential casting. The actor has made a name for himself with several prominent indie movie roles, including Call Me By Your Name and Lady Bird. Now, Chalamet is ready to jump into the world of blockbuster filmmaking with Dune. Denis Villeneuve, who previously helmed the art-house sci-fi film Blade Runner 2049, is directing the new adaptation for Legendary Pictures.
Chalamet is in talks to play Paul Atreides, the main character of the sprawling novel. The book, which is almost impossible to sum up concisely, is set on the desert planet Arrakis and tells the story of “Paul Atreides—who would become known as Muad’Dib—and of a great family’s ambition to bring to fruition humankind’s most ancient and unattainable dream.” There’s also a ton of talk about “the spice”, “the drug gives its users heightened consciousness and an extended lifespan at the cost of crippling addiction and fatal withdrawal.”
This won’t be the first Dune adaptation. In the 1970s, Alejandro Jodorowsky attempted to mount a weird, mind-bending Dune adaptation that never came to pass (the saga of this failed adaptation is covered in the documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune). In 1984, David Lynch brought Herbert’s novel to the big screen, with mixed results. Frank Herbert himself said he approved of the adaptation, but reviews have not been kind, and Lynch has all but disowned the film at this point. In 2000, the Sci-Fi Channel released a mini-series adaptation of the book, which ended up being one of the highest-rated programs in Sci-Fi’s history.
Villenueve has called his new adaptation of the book “Star Wars for adults”, and added:
“Dune is a novel that I read a very long time ago, and it still is one of my favourite novels specifically of sci-fi. I always dreamed to do Dune. I remember how excited I was before seeing the David Lynch adaptation. David Lynch is, as we all know, one of the most talented and powerful filmmakers of the past 50 years. But I felt that there were things in his approach that I didn’t like. Things that I deeply love, but things I didn’t like. It was not the Dune I was dreaming of, and I’m still dreaming about it.”
I’ve never read Dune, but I’m a big fan of Villenueve’s work, particularly Blade Runner 2049, which I think is a film that will be celebrated years from now as an unsung masterpiece. Adding Chalamet to the cast is a huge plus as well – he’s a phenomenal young actor, and I’m very curious to see him appear in a big sci-fi epic.

Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune adaptation is finally coming together. The French-Canadian director gave an update on his highly anticipated take on Frank Herbert‘s notoriously difficult-to-adapt sci-fi series, which has challenged and felled great directors like David Lynch, Ridley Scott, and Alejandro Jodorowsky. Now Villeneuve is stepping up to the plate with his two-part adaptation, having already completed the first draft of the screenplay with screenwriter Eric Roth. And now with the draft of the screenplay out of the way, Villeneuve confirmed that he plans to start pre-production on the film “soon.”
Prior to boarding the plane for the Cannes Film Festival, where Villeneuve sits on the jury, the filmmaker gave Quebec publication La Press an update on his Dune adaptation (translation via Reddit):
“Eric Roth has written the first draft and then I worked on it on my side. I have not had such fun creatively since Incendies! I wish I could direct both movies at the same time but it would have been too expensive. We’ll do them one at a time.”
Villeneuve added that he plans to start pre-production on the film “soon.” He didn’t confirm whether the first draft of the screenplay would solely be for the first film, but he likely has the broad strokes for both parts of the adaptation planned.
Recently, Villeneuve had mused that his Dune adaptation would take two films, shot over the course of two years. “Dune will probably take two years to make. The goal is to make two films, maybe more,” he told Rendez-Vous du Cinema Quebecois. While he’s sticking by his vision of splitting the dense sci-fi novel into two movies, it seems like this ambitious endeavor will take more than two years.
A two-parter is probably the best course of action for Villeneuve to tackle Herbert’s classic 1965 novel. The story is loaded with convoluted world-building and political, scientific, and social themes that any director would have trouble condensing into a two-hour film. The last time Dune graced the big screen was in Lynch’s poorly received 1984 adaptation, which the director himself formally denounced.
But Villeneuve’s vision is daunting to say the least. Just to adapt the first novel, he’ll have to dedicate four-plus years to the two-film project. Though I would always be happy to see Villeneuve take on countless big-budget sci-fi projects, I hope it doesn’t take him away from the smaller, independent projects where he delivers some of his best work.

Denis Villeneuve is in the sci-fi community’s good graces after tackling the behemoth that was Blade Runner 2049 with elegance and nuance. For his next project, the French-Canadian director has long set his sights on an even more daunting project: Dune.
First brought to the big screen by David Lynch in 1984’s poorly received adaptation, Frank Herbert’s novel is considered one of the greatest works of science-fiction, and one that is essentially unfilmable. But the Villeneuve Dune remake may have a solution to that.
While speaking at the Montreal’s Place des Arts’ Théâtre Maisonneuve for the Rendez-Vous du Cinema Quebecois this week, Villeneuve gave an update on his Dune remake (via The Playlist):
“Dune will probably take two years to make. The goal is to make two films, maybe more.”
Fans of Herbert’s novel can breathe a sigh of relief. The 1965 novel is a famously dense work of fiction filled with political, scientific, and social themes that any director would have trouble condensing into a two-hour film. The Playlist notes that the book also features a significant time jump, which would make an ideal place to split the story — similar to Warner Bros. and the It adaptation.
Indeed, lengthy sci-fi films may just be Villeneuve’s style. His original Blade Runner 2049 cut came in at four hours long, and the director even flirted with the idea of cutting the film into two parts.
Dune‘s book sequels are equally dense, expanding the world introduced in Dune and spanning generations. It’s unclear whether Villeneuve will adapt the entire Dune franchise, or stick solely to the original novel. But if he does, this franchise could end up stretching over 10 films!
There’s little known otherwise about Villeneuve’s adaptation — other than his polarizing comments that his Dune will be a “Star Wars for adults” — as the film is still in the early stages of development.
Dune has long been a passion project of Villeneuve’s. The director has been working on the film adaptation for more than a year, with screenwriter Eric Roth boarding the project last spring.
Villeneuve will be the latest director to attempt to bring Dune to life. Lynch’s 1984 feature film starring Kyle MacLachlan is an infamous blip on the prestigious director’s career, and a highly ambitious adaptation by avant-garde director Alejandro Jodorowsky only spawned a fascinating documentary about how it failed. SyFy also produced a popular miniseries called Frank Herbert’s Dune in 2000 and a 2003 sequel Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune.

Just when you thought the family drama on Animal Kingdom couldn’t get any more complicated, here comes yet another shady figure from the Cody clan’s checkered history.
Production begins on the new James Bond movie this year, but so far all that’s known is Craig will return.
Speculation has been rife over the next director, with Christopher Nolan being the hot favourite.
However another filmmaker who has had talks with 007 producer Barbara Broccoli is Blade Runner 2049’s Villeneuve.
Now in a new interview with Screen Crush, the director has spilled the beans on his plans for helming a Bond movie.
Villeneuve said: “Listen, I would love to do a Bond movie. I think Daniel Craig is a fantastic actor and I would like to, but several months ago I came into do Dune and I engaged myself.
“I committed myself and I’m someone that doesn’t step back. I did Blade Runner, one of my conditions was that I would have time to do Arrival first. Once I commit, I commit.
“When Legendary offered me to do Dune, on a silver plate? Which was like my dream project that I’m dreaming to do for 30 years? I said yes right away. I want to honour that. It doesn’t mean the movie will happen, maybe in six months the movie will…and Bond is an old fantasy of mine. “But I can’t be in two places at the same time. It’s a strange year because I would love to do a James Bond. I need to focus.”
However, when asked if he would be up for Bond 26, the director was very positive.
He added: “I would love to. I said to Barbara [Broccoli], I would love to work with you and with Daniel, but I’m engaged. I will love to do it, honestly. I’m a spoiled filmmaker right now.”
Of course this would mean a reboot if Villeneuve were to direct Bond 26, since the film will star a new actor.
Currently James Norton is odds on at 1-2 to replace Daniel Craig.
James Bond 25 will be released in UK cinemas in November 2019.
No athlete in Canada held the spotlight in 2017 quite like Denis Shapovalov.
The 18-year-old’s remarkable run up the ATP rankings, leaving behind upset wins over Grand Slam tournament champions, has earned the Richmond Hill, Ont., tennis player the Lionel Conacher Award as the Canadian Press male athlete of the year.
Shapovalov collected 20 of 64 votes (31 per cent) in a poll of broadcasters and sports editors from across the country. He edged Sidney Crosby, who led the Pittsburgh Penguins to a second straight Stanley Cup, by a single vote. Slugger Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds was third with 11 votes (17 per cent).
“To be honest, I’m a little overwhelmed to get this award, this huge honour,” Shapovalov said in a phone interview from his training base in Florida. “There are so many Canadian athletes that deserve it, so it’s honestly motivating me to keep going and work harder. I’m very happy.”
It is the third time in five years the award has gone to a tennis player. Milos Raonic, still Canada’s top-ranked player at 24th despite an injury-shortened season, took it in 2013 and 2014.
Shapovalov is hot on Raonic’s heels. He started the year ranked 250th in the world and reached as high as 49th after big performances at the Rogers Cup in Montreal and the U.S. Open in New York. He ended the season ranked 51st.
The Canadian is being touted as a rising star with potential to crack the top 10 or even top five in the world.
But what moved voters was Shapovalov’s style and sense of timing as much as his skill. The left-hander with shaggy blond hair and a one-handed backhand had the country in thrall as he seized his wild-card entry into the Rogers Cup in August and went on a spectacular run.
In the second round, he posted a two-set victory over Juan Martin Del Potro, the 2009 U.S. Open champion, and followed that by coming from a set down to defeat 15-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal. He had another comeback win in a quarter-final over Adrian Mannarino to become the youngest player to reach the semifinals of a Masters 1000 tournament before falling to another teenage prodigy, Alexander Zverev.
“It was definitely, absolutely crazy,” Shapovalov said. “I was so proud to be playing at home, having the whole country watching my back.
“It was honestly a dream week. It’s something I’ve dreamt of my whole life. Hopefully in the years to come I can actually lift the Rogers Cup trophy. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. So many emotions that week. Everything kind of had to fall into place. I had to play big, which I was able to do, so it was definitely a life-changing week. A week I’m never going to forget and hopefully I can keep building off that feeling and just keep moving forward.”
Shapovalov stayed hot at the U.S. Open three weeks later as he got through the qualifying tournament and made it to the fourth round, beating 12th-ranked Jo-Wilfried Tsonga before losing his seventh match of the fortnight to Pablo Carreno Busta.
But the turning point of the season actually came before all that. Shapovalov pointed to the Aegon Championships on the grass courts of the Queen’s Club in London just before Wimbledon in June.
“It was one of my first ATP tournaments and I saved match points in the qualifying, got through qualifying, beat Kyle Edmund in the first round and pushed Tomas Berdych, who is an unbelievable player, to three sets, to the limit,” he said. “That really gave me the confidence that I can compete with the best in the world.
“After that, it was a matter of having that opportunity to play on the big stage again. And sure enough, the next chance I had at Rogers Cup I was able to play great tennis.”
Shapovalov also made headlines for the wrong reasons in the decisive match of a Davis Cup tie against Britain in February when he was ejected after angrily smashing a ball away and inadvertently striking umpire Arnaud Gabas in an eye. Shapovalov apologized, called it a learning experience, and was fined.
He made up for that by winning both of his singles matches against India in Edmonton in September to help keep Canada in the World Group for 2018.
Those who have tracked Shapovalov aren’t surprised to see his success. He took the U.S. Open doubles title with Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal in 2015 and won the junior singles at Wimbledon in 2016. He was winning Futures and Challenger-level tournaments before joining the big boys.
Now he’s in position to get direct entry into most ATP tournaments and hopes to continue his climb. The goal for 2018 is to crack the top 25.
“It’s a very difficult goal,” he said. “You have to have an extremely good year to reach that number, but I think it’s possible if I can play well and if things fall into place like they did this year.”
