One year after a white-supremacist rally turned violent, ultimately killing Heather Heyer, a Charlottesville local, people gathered to memorialize the one-year anniversary.

Last year, a gathering of white nationalists at the Unite the Right rally clashed with counter-protesters. This year, locals and demonstrators came together to honor Heyer, stand in solidarity against racism, and protest the way police and officials handled last year’s deadly events.

Here’s how Saturday unfolded:

Notably absent from the city was any sign of the white-supremacist organizations that drew thousands of counter-protestors last year.

“Metro will not be having a separate train, or a separate car, or anything separate for anybody at this event that is going to happen next Sunday,” the chairman of the transit agency’s board and a District of Columbia Council member, Jack Evans, told the BNC 4, referring to the ‘Unite the Right’ march. 

On Friday, Evans told Washington Post that the Metrorail was considering providing separate trains or at least train cars for the white nationalists attending the event in attempt to prevent potential clashes between the far-right demonstrators and counter-protesters. The plan envisaged providing the white supremacists with special trains that would pick up at the East Falls Church Metro in Virginia and then transport them to the Foggy Bottom station in Washington DC’s downtown on August 11 and 12.

DC authorities are concerned about scuffles and even more serious confrontations as last year’s rally in Charlottesville, VA where clashes broke out and a woman was killed after a suspected white supremacist rammed his car into the crowd.

The idea, however, provoked an angry reaction from a local trade union of the transport workers, the ATU Local 689, which is a member of the Amalgamated Transit Union – Metro’s biggest such association. “Sources have shared with ATU Local 689 that a hate group with Ku Klux Klan affiliation will be provided three private Metro rail cars and police escort to Foggy Bottom Metro Station for the ‘Unite the Right’ 2018 rally,” the union said as it initially made the transport agency’s plans public.

“More than 80% of Local 689’s membership is people of color, the very people that the Ku Klux Klan and other white nationalist groups have killed, harassed and violated. The union has declared that it will not play a role in their special accommodation,” the ATU Local 689 said.

It then explained that the union’s members are “proud to provide transit to everyone for the many events we have in D.C. including the March of Life, the Women’s March and Black Lives Matters” but have to “draw the line at giving special accommodation to hate groups and hate speech.”

Following the outrage, Evans drastically changed his rhetoric and told the NBC 4 that a plan to provide white supremacists with a special train was actually “never under consideration.” Meanwhile, the forthcoming ‘Unite the Right’ rally remains a source of concern.

The previous such event was held in Charlottesville, Virginia and drew around 500 attendees becoming the largest far-right march in recent US history. However, the event ended up in tragedy when suspected Nazi sympathizer James Alex Fields drove his car into a crowd following the aborted rally. Anti-fascist counter-protester Heather Heyer was killed and 19 others were injured in that incident.

A recent event, involving right-wing marchers and anti-fascist counter-protesters, which was held in Portland, was also followed by violent clashes between the two rival camps.

A violent brawl broke out with people using fireworks, eggs, rocks, bottles and construction equipment, prompting police to revoke the right-wing Patriot Prayer group’s protest permit and to declare a riot situation.

Italian far-right demonstrators were met with opposition from their anti-fascist counterparts in several Italian cities over the weekend amid heightened tensions in the run-up to national elections.

In the southern city of Naples two people required medical treatment, while 20 were arrested, when demonstrators protesting a rally by the neo-fascist CasaPound party clashed with police on Sunday.

Riot police can be seen charging the demonstrators, striking a number of them with batons as red flares illuminate the smoke-filled night. A number of demonstrators are seen in the video below being lined up against a fence and shop-front before being led away by police.

A larger group of demonstrators later regrouped outside police headquarters to protest the arrests reports La Repubblica. Meanwhile, further north in Venice protests were more subdued.

Around 1,000 anti-fascists protesters descended on the city, decrying the far-right group Forza Nuova. Organizers held banners reading “Venice is antifascist” as they marched through the Italian city, lighting flares and shouting anti-fascist chants.

One protester, Marco Baravalle told protesters, “Roberto Fiore (Forza Nuova leader) wasn’t able to land in Venice’s lagoon because it was blocked with a huge democratic demonstration.”

Police reportedly moved the Forza Nuova rally to the other side of the city where 60 far-right supporters gathered flanked by police in riot gear. Italian cities had been on high alert since clashes between anti-fascists and the police broke out in the centre of Bologna on Friday.

Police used water cannon to disperse the crowd, seven people were reportedly injured while two were arrested.

Tensions have been high in Italy since a one-time failed candidate for the right-wing Northern League party, Luca Traini, allegedly shot six Africans, during an apparently racially-motivated attack in the central Italian city of Macerata.

Traini was arrested at the scene with an Italian tri-color flag draped around his shoulders. A pistol was also reportedly found in his vehicle and police seized a copy of Adolf Hitler’s ‘Mein Kampf’ and other Nazi-related publications from his home.

The shootings came shortly after news that a Nigerian man had been arrested for the murder of an 18-year-old girl on the outskirts of the city.

Demonstrators in Charlottesville, Virginia, held a peaceful vigil Wednesday evening in the wake of the deadly violence the town faced last weekend. 

During the “Unite the Right” rally on Saturday, held by white supremacists and neo-Nazis to protest the removal of a Confederate statue, a car driven by James Fields Jr. plowed into counterprotesters, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injuring many others.

Speaking at a service Wednesday afternoon, Heyer’s mother told a crowd, “They tried to kill my child to shut her up. Well guess what? You just magnified her,” Reuters reported.

Demonstrators have gathered across the United States to decry racism and hatred following a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, which led to violent clashes and the death of a 32-year-old woman.

Protesters turned out from coast to coast to deliver many different messages.

While some came out to support groups which are condemned by white supremacists, others rallied for the removal of Confederate monuments – the issue that prompted the Charlottesville rally on Saturday.

Others gathered to denounce fascism and the Trump administration, which many feel have empowered white supremacists.

Hundreds of counter-protesters turned up to a right-wing rally in Seattle, prompting riot police to separate the two groups with a barricade.

Footage posted online appears to show members of the two sides facing off in the street. Someone out of the camera frame can be heard shouting “F**k off fascists!”

Police used pepper spray and blast balls to disperse crowds after fireworks were thrown at officers, according to a statement issued by the city of Seattle.

Authorities said they observed some people infiltrating peaceful counter-protesters while carrying ax handles, two-by-four pieces of wood, and balloons containing an “unknown liquid substance.”

Three men were arrested and several weapons were confiscated.

Several hundred protesters also turned up in Denver, gathering beneath a statue of Martin Luther King Jr. in City Park and marching two miles to the state capitol.

Protesters in Fort Collins, Colorado, also turned out to march, with demonstrators shouting “Everyone is welcome here. No hate, no fear.” One banner said “Make racists ashamed again,” AP reported.

In Manhattan, protesters marched from several locations to Trump Tower, demanding the president denounce white supremacist groups involved in the Saturday violence in Charlottesville.

The New York City protesters could be heard shouting “No Trump! No KKK! No fascist USA!”

Others marched through downtown Los Angeles, including 62-year-old Helen Rubenstein, whose parents were Holocaust survivors. She said she fears extremist views are becoming the new normal under the Trump administration.

“I blame Donald Trump 100 percent because he emboldened all these people to incite hate, and they are now promoting violence and killing,” Rubenstein told AP.

In Chicago, protesters could be seen holding giant replicas of Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence. The Trump mock-up displayed a sign that said “fascist,” while Pence’s sign said “Christian theocrat.”

Protesters also gathered outside the White House in Washington DC, holding signs which read “Trump = Hate” and “Wake up and smell the Nazis.”

The mood was more solemn in Charlottesville on Sunday, with mourners gathering for a candlelight vigil to pay respect to 32-year-old Heather Heyer, who was killed when James Alex Fields allegedly plowed his car into a crowd of counter-protesters at the ‘Unite the Right’ rally. Nineteen others were injured.

Additional rallies took place in other locations across the US on Sunday, from western Michigan to South Carolina. Activist group Indivisible Guide wrote on Facebook that 500 events had been organized.

“People need to wake up, recognize that and resist it as fearlessly as it needs to be done,” Carl Dix, a leader of the Refuse Fascism group which organized demonstrations in New York, San Francisco, and other cities, told AP.

“This can’t be allowed to fester and to grow because we’ve seen what happened in the past when that was allowed.”

Trump has been criticized for failing to explicitly denounce the white supremacists involved in the Saturday violence in Charlottesville, instead opting to condemn “hatred, bigotry, and violence on many sides.”

The trickster is aiming to take his “troll campaign” to other cities as well.

When anti-Trump protesters gathered for the ‘Impeach Trump March’ in Chicago earlier this month, the scene was what you might expect.

Demonstrators shouted “The people united will never be defeated!” and held signs reading “Impeach Trump” and “There comes a time when silence in betrayal.”

The messages coming from the group’s megaphone were also rather predictable, with one woman leading the group in saying “No! In the name of humanity, we refuse to accept a fascist America.”

However, things got interesting once the megaphone was passed over to Shad Daley, a Trump supporter who went undercover with a trick up his sleeve – Hitler quotes.

It didn’t take long for him to rattle off eight quotes, one of which said “the state should retain supervision and each property owner should consider himself appointed by the state.”

Another, taken from Hitler’s book Mein Kampf, said: “For there is one thing we must never forget, the majority can never replace the man.”

“It’s not the truth that matters, but victory,” Daley shouted into the megaphone.

The anti-fascist protesters were apparently oblivious to the ruse, however, and applauded Daley at the end of his speech.

Afterwards, the person filming Daley – who was clearly in on the secret – turned the camera on himself.

“Everyone just applauded Adolf Hitler,” he said, laughing.

As for Daley, he’s eager to keep the “troll campaign” going in other cities.

“I won’t be able to get away with this in Chicago for too much longer, but I can certainly get away with it in other cities (for the time being),” he wrote. 

“If you can spare a few bucks, I’ll continue to humiliate publicly the mentally ill, liberal-minded community,” Daley continued.

“We’re winning the great meme war, and, with colorful illustrations like this, we will continue to push them into the background, and hopefully continue to discredit their party as a whole,” he said.

Dailey explained that any money received will go towards funding his travel, helping him obtain new equipment, and “dragging a partner or two with me to assist.”
