It’s finally go time. For the first time since 2011 and the space shuttle’s retirement, a rocket and spacecraft stand on a launch pad in Florida capable of blasting humans into space. Launch time is set for 2:49am ET (07:49 UTC) Saturday from Kennedy Space Center. NASA and SpaceX have worked toward this goal for nine years. It hasn’t always been easy, but now here we are.

This particular Dragon won’t carry humans, just a single mannequin named Ripley as an homage to Sigourney Weaver’s iconic character in the movie Alien. Ripley will wear a flight suit and be well instrumented in order to determine conditions inside the spacecraft. “The idea is to get an idea of how humans would feel in her place basically,” Hans Koenigsmann, the vice president of build and flight reliability at SpaceX, said at a news briefing Thursday.

Critical flight

NASA is taking few chances for this critical flight. Although SpaceX has flown a cargo version of the Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station since 2012, the crew variant of the spacecraft is entirely made over from the exterior solar panels to the interior life support system. When Dragon arrives at the space station, which it will on Sunday morning if the launch proceeds as scheduled, crew there will enter the vehicle with full oxygen masks. This is because Dragon’s cooling system relies on freon, and there’s presently no robust way to check for leaks.

  • More than one thousand women from all over the US marched in the streets and occupied the Hart Senate Office Building on Thursday.
  • They were protesting the Trump administration’s immigration policies and calling for the abolition of Immigration Customs and Enforcement.
  • At least 575 women were arrested, according to Capitol police.

More than one thousand demonstrators& from 47 states descended on Washington, DC, for a peaceful protest and sit-in over a “zero tolerance” immigration policy the Trump administration has touted in recent weeks. That police had led to the separation of thousands of children from their parents before the Trump administration halted the separations in late June.

Hundreds of children remain separated from their parents in shelters throughout the US.

The protesters occupied the Hart Senate Office Building on Thursday while wearing foil blankets that resembled those worn by children being held in detention facilities on the US-Mexico border. During their sit-in they called for the reunification of families and the dissolution of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.

Several prominent members of Congress, including Sen. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts joined in solidarity with the protesters.

In all, Capitol police arrested at least 575 women for the misdemeanor offense of unlawfully demonstrating in the Capitol. Two of those arrested included actress Susan Sarandon and Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who serves the 7th Congressional District of Washington state.

Actor George Takei, who lived in a Japanese internment camp at age 5, wrote an op-ed in Foreign Policy in which he drew comparisons to Japanese internment camps and the Trump administration’s now-defunct practice of causing the separation of children from their parents as a consequence of crossing the US border illegally.

“At least during the internment, when I was just 5 years old, I was not taken from my parents,” Takei wrote.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians, pressing for a right of return for refugees to what is now Israel, gathered along the fenced 65-km (40-mile) frontier where tents were erected for a planned six-week protest, local officials said. The Israeli military estimate was 30,000.

Tensions are rising in the post-vote protest in Paris against President-elect Emmanuel Macron, as well as against new labor reforms. Police have briefly engaged in scuffles with protesters, according to images from the scene.

“He is not our president”, “Say No to the new labor reform!”, “Say No to repression”, read the banners held by demonstrators.

Representatives of trade unions, left wing groups, as well as anti-fascists and anarchists are taking part in the rally, according to French media.

“En Marche! is pushing towards social war” said another banner held by protesters. The En Marche! political party was created by Macron in 2016 after he stepped down as Economy Minister under Francois Hollande’s government to join the presidential race.

Activists announced before the presidential run-off that they would demonstrate regardless of who won, saying that both Macron’s and rival Marine Le Pen’s policies are anti-social.

The protest was partially organized on Facebook by the Front Social political movement. 

“The next President of the Republic is already preparing his anti-social policy,” the movement wrote on its Facebook page, “We… tell him that we will not let him implement his policy.”

French riot police have deployed tear gas on protesters who gathered at the Place de la Bastille in central Paris after preliminary results of the first round of the presidential election were announced.

Protests in Paris in the aftermath of the vote have turned violent with smoke grenades, flares and glass bottles thrown at police.

RT’s correspondent Charlotte Dubenskij was tear gassed while reporting from the scene.

The rallies, dubbed the “night of the barricades,” are expected to take place in 13 cities across France.

The protests erupted minutes after the polling stations closed in the first round of the presidential elections.

There is a massive riot police presence on the streets of Paris, with officers wearing full body armor, including shields and carrying batons and pepper spray bottles, as can be seen on images from a Ruptly video.

At some point protesters were seen throwing chairs – apparently from nearby cafes – at police officers.

At least one protester has been reportedly injured in clashes with police.

The protesters say they are unhappy with all of the 11 candidates taking part in the elections, according RT’s Dubenskij.

Police are currently trying to kettle the crowd and block it off in one area to prevent the protest from escalating.

Protesters brought a makeshift guillotine to the Opéra Bastille to show their dissatisfaction with the elections, claiming they are against racism, sexism, fascism and basically anything that has to do with the establishment, Dubenskij added.

“We came to protest against the masquerade that represents this election,” a protester said, the French Europe1 news outlet reported.

Paris police have issued a warning on Twitter, saying the traffic around the Bastille area is heavy due to the protest.

An estimated 100,000 people marched in London on Saturday during a Unite for Europe demonstration against ‘hard Brexit’.

Several past and current Westminster politicians, including Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron and former Labour spin-doctor Alastair Campbell, took part in the protest.

However, the BBC barely touched the event.

“Am assuming the Brextremist Lie Machine bullying of the BBC means this excellent rally not being covered. #FarageNews,” Campbell tweeted on the day.

An article on the channel’s website was also criticized for focusing on the minute’s silence for the victims of last Wednesday’s terrorist attack in Westminster rather than the actual topic of the march.

“Appalling editorial. This has NOTHING to do with the attacks. We marched against Brexit,” said one Facebook user.

The original headline of the article read “London attack: Victims remembered at anti-Brexit march.” It was later changed to “Thousands take to streets in anti-Brexit London march.”

Other well-known establishment figures took to social media to vent against the public broadcaster’s decision to cover the story only on the 6pm and 10pm national bulletins.

“Is BBC under political pressure to play down massive anti-Brexit movement in the UK? You bet it is. The Downing St stench grows. Be angry,” author and philosopher AC Grayling wrote on Twitter.

Tech magazines editor Mike Butcher also tweeted: “Pretty annoyed the BBC has ignored the biggest pro-EU march ever & 60 years of the EU.”

Some pointed out the event had more coverage in Portuguese and German news than on Britain’s largest news broadcaster.

According to the Independent, the BBC declined to comment and was unable to divulge the number of complaints it had received over the day’s coverage. The exact amount of time dedicated to the protest was also not confirmed.

Some, however, said the BBC was being wrongly targeted.

“Can we please not add ‘public trust in the BBC’ to the list of Brexit’s many victims? If we erode that edifice we’ll just get more Fake News,” TV presenter Greg Jenner said on Twitter.

BBC Brexit bias

Despite the complaints, the BBC has more readily been accused of having an anti-Brexit bias.

Last week, a group of 70 MPs used pro-Brexit newspapers, the Telegraph and Daily Mail, to publish an open letter to ‘Auntie’, shaming the channel for its alleged pro-EU stance.

“I agree with you that these are consequential times. For that reason, it is more important than ever that the BBC’s journalism is independent of political pressure,” BBC Director General Tony Hall wrote in reply.

“We will continue to listen respectfully and respond wherever appropriate. Above all, we will guard our independence, report the news diligently and impartially, and continue to fulfil our mission on behalf of all our audiences.”

A passenger has claimed the BA pilot had to help out with the safety demonstration, which usually takes place as the plane is taxiing along the tarmac. 

The 747 flight was taking off from Houston in Texas, United States, headed for London Heathrow. 

Jo Osborn was one of the passengers on the 10-hour journey and decided to tweet about her unusual experience. 

Jo wrote: “’We’re short of crew today so the pilot is helping with the safety demo’. 

Want me to do it @British_Airways, so he can fly the plane?”

BA took to Twitter to reply to Jo personally, with staff member Lolly writing: “We normally have two pilots on each flight, Jo. Hope this clarifies matters.”

Jo hit back, commenting: “Thanks Lolly – I knew that – it was a first to see – he did a great job pointing out the exits though…”

Another person entered the Twitter debate, writing: “All BA planes need two pilot minimum in the flight deck. Also all demo positions must be covered…”

One Twitter user wrote: “omg [sic] this is so embarrassing”.

The UK airline is investigating the passenger’s claims but insists there were enough staff on board the flight. 

A BA spokesperson said: “​We would never operate a flight without the sufficient numbers of fully trained pilots and cabin crew.​

“The Houston flight had three pilots and 13 cabin crew on board.

“Our cabin crew and pilots always work as a team to ensure the safety of our customers.”

The passenger’s claim came in the midst of a week-long strike by BA Mixed Fleet cabin crew over wages. 

It followed months of strike action by the staff, organised by the Unite union. 

A four-day strike was carried out from February 22, as union members vowed to “pile on the pressure” over what they call “poverty pay”. 

The two sides have clashed over rates, with Unite saying the cabin crew earn an average of £16,000 a year, including allowances, but BA insisting no one was paid below £21,000.
