  • The Audi RS3 is one of the latest offerings from the German luxury brand’s Audi Sport performance division.
  • Audi Sport is cashing in on its racing success with a series of performance models wearing the “R” and “RS” designation.
  • The RS3 is based on Audi’s subcompact A3 sedan, and it’s the most affordable way to get your hands on a new Audi Sport model in the United States.
  • It’s a direct rival for the BMW M2 and the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45.
  • The 2018 Audi RS3 starts at $ 54,900 and is powered by a 400-horsepower, 2.5-liter, turbocharged five-cylinder engine.

Mercedes-Benz has AMG. BMW has its M cars. Porsche has, well, Porsche. 

All of the aforementioned represent the pinnacle of German performance motoring. But there’s another member of this club that, until recently, had taken a lower-profile approach to things: Audi Sport.

In the modern era of motorsports, there are few organizations that have had as much success as Audi Sport, from the heights of the World Rally Championships and the iconic Audi Quattro to the grueling 24 hours of the Le Mans endurance sports-car race. At Le Mans, Audi’s racing prototypes lost just twice during a 15-year stretch between 2000 and 2014.

In spite of its on-the-track dominance, Audi Sport hasn’t become the marking juggernaut like its fellow German performance brands. This is especially the case in the realm of production cars, where AMG, M Sport, and Porsche are household names. 

“We spent so much on the authenticity of Audi Sport and the racing of Audi Sport that we forgot to commercialize Audi Sport and take advantage of the success we’ve had,” Scott Keogh, president of Audi of America, told us in a 2016 interview. “Our competitors have done a smart job of putting more focus into turning out more M cars and AMGs.”

A couple of years ago, Audi decided to finally cash in on its racing success through a new line of Audi Sport-produced, high-performance models bearing the “R” and “RS” monikers. 

In the United States, the most affordable way to get your hands on one of Audi Sport’s hot rod RS cars is the Audi RS3. We were fortunate enough to spend a week with the Teutonic speedster earlier this year. 

The 2018 Audi RS3 2.5T quattro S tronic sedan starts at $ 54,900 in the US. With options, our test car, dressed in a flashy Catalunya Red metallic paint job, left the showroom with an as-tested price of $ 66,775.

The Dodge Demon doesn’t strike us as a muscle car much in need of a performance makeover. After all, this 840-horsepower MoPar machine’s voracious quest for straight-line speed means it trims weight by jettisoning everything from a front passenger seat and rear seat, to its stereo and all carpeting in the trunk. The folks at Hennessey apparently think that’s not nearly extreme enough. So, the Texas-based tuning outfit has turned the Demon into a 1,035-horsepower mega beast that runs a quarter-mile in 9.14 seconds at 152 mph.

That’s fast, really fast.

In fact, the HPE1000 is now the world’s fastest Dodge Demon, having set its record-setting pace at Lonestar Motorsports Park on May 8. “The 2018 Demonis a street-legal rocket from Dodge, but we wanted to take the car’s impressive track times to an industry leading level.” said president and company founder, John Hennessey. For comparison, the stock Dodge Demon is credited with running the quarter-mile in 9.65 seconds at 140 mph.

The main HPE1000 modification involves replacing the stock 2.7-liter supercharger with one that’s a staggering 4.5-liters in capacity. Also included in the Hennessey toy-chest are stainless steel long tube headers, a high-flow air induction system, upgraded throttle body, upgraded fuel pump and fuel injectors, along with custom engine management calibration. When all is said and done, the HPE1000 Dodge Demon delivers a total of 1,035 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 948 pound-feet of torque at 4,200 rpm.

While the standard Demon accelerates from 0-60 mph in only 2.3 seconds, the Hennessey variant trims this down to only 1.9 seconds. That’s quick enough to make a Bugatti Chiron blush.

Hennessey hasn’t stated what all this will cost, though the company did say production of these devilishly fast Demons will be limited to only 50 examples. Customers also receive a 1-year/12,000-mile warranty, which seems a nice touch for a car that’s downright scary with its performance specs.

A little while ago we wrote about the Viper factory being recommissioned into a museum, that will hold the historic cars originally evicted from the Walter P. Chrysler museum. Now, what happened to the last Viper that factory built? It’s getting auctioned off, in good company.

Barrett-Jackson is auctioning the last 2017 Viper built, together with a 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon said to be the last Demon produced. Crossing the block in June in Uncasville, Connecticut, the pair of cars produces a total of 1,485 horsepower, of which the Demon accounts for 840 horses and the Viper for 645. Both are finished in bright Viper Red, and yes, the Demon will include the optional passenger seat.

All proceeds from the sale will go to charity, to United Way. “Pairing the last Dodge Challenger SRT Demon and the Dodge Viper production cars – two of America’s most sought-after vehicles – under the roof of Barrett-Jackson gives someone the ‘last’ chance to own this unique piece of automotive history, and Dodge//SRT the opportunity to raise money for a cause close to our hearts”, said FCA’s Steve Beahm.

In addition to the cars, the sale will include memorabilia and a Demon Crate, which includes narrow, drag-spec front tires, performance modules and track tools. The auction is held from June 20th to 23rd.

Dodge has already unleashed an 840-hp, rear-wheel-drive muscle car onto public roads, but at least it’s offering owners a no-cost way of learning how to manage all that power. Dodge SRT is starting up a new drag-racing course at the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving that is included with the purchase of any Challenger SRT Demon. Taking place at Bondurant’s official NHRA drag strip at its HQ in Chandler, Arizona, the one-day class will also be available as an upgrade on top of the general high-performance driving class that Dodge already offers for buyers of other SRT models.

The day starts off with classroom instruction surveying some drag-racing fundamentals including launch, staging, reaction time, signals, and all sorts of safety checks. Then participants are let loose on the drag strip in a variety of Challenger models, including the 485-hp Challenger SRT 392, the 707-hp Hellcat, and, of course, the big kahuna that is the 840-hp, drag-optimized Demon. Each driver gets 22 runs down the quarter-mile, though Dodge doesn’t say exactly how many of those are in the full-bore Demon.

All Demon owners are eligible for the full-day high-performance driving course in addition to the drag-racing course; the drag course is $ 999 extra for owners of lesser SRT models. If you don’t have any SRT in your garage, the drag-racing school costs $ 1999 straight up. Preregistration for the course starts today, with classes beginning March 9, so get your heavy right foot ready for some demonic burnout action.

The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is built with the drag strip in mind. That said, it can be a little intimidating getting behind the wheel of an 840-horsepower monster with front-wheel lift and aim it down a thin strip of pavement. Now, though, Dodge Demon owners can get professional training from a new drag racing course through the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving.

The course is for free to Demon owners, and it includes a day of instruction at the drag strip. SRT owners (who already get a free day of training) can upgrade to a two-day course for $ 999, with a day on the drag strip and a day on a road course. If you don’t own a Dodge, you can purchase the Dodge SRT Bondurant Drag Racing School course, and learn to drag race in a Challenger SRT Demon, SRT Hellcat, Hellcat Widebody and SRT 392.

“With great power comes responsibility,” says FCA Head of Passenger Cars Tim Kuniskis, “so we want our enthusiasts to respect the full capability of their machines. Our Dodge SRT partnership with the highly acclaimed Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving, which comes with the purchase of an SRT, gives our customers the opportunity to get the most out of their new vehicles in a controlled environment, as well as gives anyone interested in our performance cars the chance to get behind the wheel of one at the track.”

“Where else can you drive a Demon without having to buy one?” Kuniskis adds.

The Dodge SRT program takes place at Bondurant’s facility, and the NHRA drag strip at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Chandler, Arizona. Classroom instruction is about two hours, followed by on-track instruction, including 22 single-lane runs in a variety of Challengers.

The first time I stepped behind the wheel of the 2018 Dodge Demon, I was pointed down a drag strip, Christmas tree just in view through my full-face helmet. My heart was racing with a mix of nervous anticipation and raw excitement. Since the teasers for this car started rolling out in January, I’d wanted to drive Dodge’s monster. This 840-horsepower hunk of steel and plastic was a rolling middle finger to EVs, carbon emissions and global warming. Only in America.

The sensation was wholly unique. More so than anything, I noticed the sheer force as I was pushed back into my seat. Watch the video. And here’s another one. If it looks like I’m just hanging on, it’s because I am. In retrospect, I should have been sitting more upright, but I was trying to watch the revs to get the perfect launch using the transbrake. Still, I managed to get a bit of air between the front tires and the drag strip, if only for a moment.

Aside from the sheer force, the most memorable thing was the sound. The scream from the supercharger nearly drowns out everything else. Just beneath that you can hear the 6.2-liter Hemi V8 kicking and screaming a song that sounds like the Devil’s own chorus. Still, words don’t quite do it justice. As this exclusive sneak peek from tonight’s episode of The Exorcist (Fox, 9/8c) shows, John Cho’s usually affable character is no longer the easygoing, kind foster dad we met at the beginning of the season. (In his defense, the same might happen to you if you were being tormented by a demon wearing the face of your dead spouse.) But he’s holding it together as best he can… even when Ben Daniels’ Marcus starts asking pointed questions about the kids and playing with the (bloody?) rock that Tomas saw in the workshop in the last episode.
