JD Vance has a razor-thin lead over Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan in the Ohio Senate race, with the Republican nominee edging out the veteran congressman by one-percentage point, according to a new Marist Poll.
The survey showed that Vance had 46% support among registered voters, while Ryan earned the backing of 45% of respondents; nine percent of respondents said that they were undecided.
Among voters who indicated that they were highly likely to vote in November, Vance led by a similar one-point margin (48%-47%).
In the poll, Vance attracted the support of 85% of Republicans, with 9% of GOP respondents crossing over to back Ryan.
The venture capitalist and "Hillbilly Elegy" author performed strongly in western Ohio, where he led Ryan by 40 percentage points (65%-25%), and in the Appalachian region of southern Ohio, where he held a robust 28-point lead (60%-32%).
However, Ryan has managed to remain competitive in the Republican-friendly Buckeye State by consolidating the Democratic base while also performing well with independents and peeling off some GOP voters.
In the survey, Ryan captured 92% of the Democratic vote and had a two-point lead with independents, while also earning the support of nearly one-in-ten Republican respondents.
Among white voters — by far the largest share of voters in Ohio — Ryan and Vance are nearly even, with the Democratic congressman winning 45% of their votes to 47% for the GOP nominee.
Ryan led Vance by 11 percentage points (50%-39%) among nonwhite voters.
And Ryan is running ahead in three critical regions where he must deliver robust margins in order to win statewide — he led in the Cleveland area 53%-35% and metropolitan Columbus 51%-43%.
In the Cincinnati area — where populous Hamilton County in recent years has increasingly backed Democratic candidates in statewide races — Ryan held a 47%-45% edge over Vance.
AP Photo/Jay LaPrete
The top three issues for respondents in the poll were inflation (36%), the preservation of democracy (27%), and abortion (18%).
While Vance has hammered Ryan over the economy by linking him to President Joe Biden — who is currently unpopular in the state — the Democratic nominee has sought to highlight his opposition to free-trade deals that accompanied the decline in manufacturing jobs in the state.
In the gubernatorial contest, Republican Gov. Mike DeWine held a wide 55%-37% lead over his Democratic opponent, former Dayton mayor Nan Whaley.
Among those who indicated that they would definitely head to the polls this fall, DeWine held a 55%-39% lead.
DeWine, who is seeking a second term in office, received the backing of 92% of Republicans and attracted the support of 10% of Democratic respondents.
Among independents, DeWine held a significant 22-point lead (54%-32%) over Whaley.
In the survey, the governor also led in every region of the state, including the Democratic-leaning Cleveland area, where he bested Whaley 48%-45%.
Marist polled 1,200 registered voters from September 12 through September 15; the survey had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.

Alaska hasn't voted for a Democratic presidential nominee since Lyndon B. Johnson's landslide victory in 1964.
The state last backed a Democrat in a Senate race in 2008, when then-Anchorage Mark Begich won a close contest against veteran Republican lawmaker Ted Stevens.
And for nearly 50 years, Alaska voters sent longtime Republican Don Young to Washington, DC, as its at-large congressman.
But in the race to succeed Young — who passed away in February — former Democratic state Rep. Mary Peltola won a House special election last month in a field that included former Republican Gov. Sarah Palin and Republican Nick Begich III. (Begich is the nephew of the former Democratic senator.)
Despite the long history of GOP triumphs in the Frontier State, Peltola — who will be the first Alaska Native elected to Congress — said she was not surprised by her victory.
In an interview with Politico, she spoke of the tight-knit nature of Alaskan politicians and her embrace of bipartisanship while serving in the legislature — where she also developed a working relationship with Palin, the 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee.
"I was very optimistic," she told the outlet. "The three of us who were in the final round of the special election, we had come out of a field of 48 candidates. And I worked very, very hard."
She continued: "I was on the phone two or three hours a day reaching out to Alaskans across the state. We had a number of events that we hosted to connect with as many voters as I possibly could."
Peltola remarked that her experience in the Alaska House of Representatives was a key part of her background.
"I did have a lot of connections that I had made over the 10 years in the Statehouse," she told Politico. "I developed a reputation over the years that I served in Juneau of being very easy to work with, able to work with anyone in the building — regardless of party."
"Alaska is a small state. Most of the people who are in leadership positions have been here many decades and Alaskans tend to have a long memory. So I was not shocked at the outcome of our race," she added.
The election was held with ranked-choice voting, where voters can indicate on their ballots their ranked preferences. If no candidate has received the majority of the vote in a race, the candidates are eliminated until votes for the top-two finishers are tallied up and a winner is declared.
After the votes were tabulated, Peltola defeated Palin 51.5%-48.5%.
The congresswoman-elect — who will sworn in on Tuesday — will serve out the remaining weeks of Young's term, and will once again face Palin and Begich in November for a full two-year term in office.

NBC on Wednesday night hosted the ninth Democratic debate, held in Las Vegas. Who had the best showing just days ahead of the Nevada Democratic caucuses and with the Presidential Primary Election just around the bend on March 3?
The two-hour debate featured six candidates, including first-time qualifier Mike Bloomberg. He was joined on stage by former vice president Joe Biden; South Bend, Ind., mayor Pete Buttigieg; Minnesota senator Amy Klobuchar; Vermont senator Bernie Sanders; and Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren.
Those who did not meet the qualifications for Wednesday’s matchup included hedge-fund billionaire Tom Steyer (who qualified for the last five debates) and U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (out of the mix since the Nov. 20 debate). Meanwhile, three other candidates have dropped out of the race since the previous debate on Feb. 7: Colorado senator Michael Bennett, former Michigan governor Deval Patrick, and tech exec Andrew Yang.
Based on what you saw and heard Wednesday night, who is the most electable and would give President Trump the toughest fight in November? Vote below.
The next Democratic presidential debate will be held Tuesday, Feb. 25 at the Charleston Gaillard Center in Charleston, S.C., and air on CBS and BET.

ABC on Friday plays host to the eighth Democratic debate, live from St. Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire. It is the first of three primary showdowns scheduled for the month of February, and comes just days ahead of the state’s Feb. 11 primary.
The three-hour debate will feature seven candidates. Those who qualified will appear on stage in the following order (from left to right):
* Andrew Yang, former tech exec
* Pete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Ind.
* Bernie Sanders, Vermont senator
* Joe Biden, former vice president
* Elizabeth Warren, Massachusetts senator
* Amy Klobuchar, Minnesota senator
* Tom Steyer, hedge-fund billionaire
Though the number of democrats vying for the nomination has dwindled considerably as of late, there are still four other candidates who did not meet the qualifications for Friday’s matchup:
* Michael Bloomberg, former mayor of New York City
* Tulsi Gabbard, U.S. representative for Hawaii’s second congressional district
* Deval Patrick, former governor of Massachusetts
* Michael Bennet, Colorado senator
ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos, David Muir and Linsey Davis will serve as moderators of the debate. They’ll be joined by Adam Sexton and Monica Hernandez of WMUR, the local New Hampshire affiliate.
Friday’s debate comes on the heels of the (admittedly bungled) Iowa caucuses, where Sanders and Buttigieg are locked in a virtual tie. Meanwhile, Sanders leads in recent polls in New Hampshire, according to the The New York Times.
The debate begins at 8 pm ET. Watch along via the live stream above (or click here to watch it on YouTube), then scroll down to discuss in the comments.

“You’re endorsed!”
The New York Times used its Sunday-night TV newsmagazine, The Weekly, to build up to and then reveal its endorsements for the Democratic presidential race: Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren and Minnesota senator Amy Klobuchar.
Explaining the split vote, the Times said in a statement, “In this perilous moment, both the radical and the realist models warrant serious consideration. For this reason, we are breaking with convention, and putting our support behind not one, but two candidates.”
The announcement came after The Weekly (which airs on FX and streams on Hulu) had aired excerpts from their editorial board’s traditional in-depth interviews with leading contenders for the Democratic nomination, also including Joe Biden, Andrew Yang, Pete Buttigieg, Bernie Sanders, Tom Steyer, Cory Booker (who has since dropped out) and Deval Patrick.
“These illuminating interviews have historically happened behind closed doors. This year, the Times board experimented with a new level of openness,” the publication said of the decision to open their deliberations to the public. “We hope this endorsement process will give readers — and voters — a new understanding of the key issues facing the nation and shaping the 2020 presidential race.”
The decidedly Apprentice-style format of the proceedings understandably drew mixed reactions on social media, with some likening it to the world’s worst rose ceremony and others acknowledging that, well, reality-TV is what entertains people nowadays.
Warren took the split decision in stride, while Klobuchar regarded it an honor:

Live from Loyola Marymount University, a comparatively sleek pack of seven squared off in the sixth Democratic presidential debate on Thursday night. Who emerged as the current frontrunner to go up against embattled President Trump?
Hosted by PBS NewsHour and Politico, the debate was moderated by PBS NewsHour anchor and managing editor Judy Woodruff, Politico chief political correspondent Tim Alberta, PBS NewsHour senior national correspondent Amna Nawaz and White House correspondent Yamiche Alcindor. The candidates that qualified were former tech exec Andrew Yang; Pete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Ind.; Elizabeth Warren, Massachusetts senator; Joe Biden, former vice president; Bernie Sanders, Vermont senator; Amy Klobuchar, Minnesota senator; and hedge-fund billionaire Tom Steyer.
Coming out of the first, two-night debate in June, Harris led our poll that asked, “Who has the best chance to defeat President Donald Trump in 2020?” (followed by Warren, Biden, Buttigieg and Sanders). In the second round of debates in July, Yang came out on top, followed by Warren, Biden, Sanders and Gabbard. Yang also led our September poll following Debate No. 3 (followed by Warren, Sanders, Biden and Buttigieg), our October poll for Debate No. 4 (followed by Warren, Buttigieg, Sanders and Biden), and our November poll for Debate No. 5 (followed by Buttigieg, Sanders, Warren and Biden). It must be noted that Yang is typically a slow starter in TVLine’s debate polls, and yet unerringly enjoys an overnight surge.
Who from Thursday’s seven debaters delivered the best ideas, and delivered them well? In the poll below, choose up to two candidates that have the best chance to defeat Trump in 2020, and then hit the comments to discuss your choices.
The seventh Democratic debate is scheduled for Jan. 14, 2020, to be held at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and hosted by CNN and the Des Moines Register.

And then there were seven!
PBS on Thursday plays host to the sixth Democratic primary debate, live from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Calif. For the first time this election cycle, less than 10 candidates — seven, to be exact — qualified for the three-hour matchup, which is set to get underway at 8 pm ET.
Those who did qualify for the final debate of 2019 will appear on stage in the following order (from left to right):
* Andrew Yang, former tech exec
* Pete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Ind.
* Elizabeth Warren, Massachusetts senator
* Joe Biden, former vice president
* Bernie Sanders, Vermont senator
* Amy Klobuchar, Minnesota senator
* Tom Steyer, hedge-fund billionaire
Candidates who did not qualify for the sixth debate are Michael Bloomberg, Cory Booker, Julian Castro, Tulsi Gabbard, Michael Bennet, John Delaney, Marianne Williamson and Deval Patrick. (Kamala Harris would have qualified, but dropped out of the race on Dec. 3.)
Coverage will kick off with the PBS NewsHour POLITICO Debate Preview at 7:30 pm, hosted by Capitol Hill correspondent Lisa Desjardins. She will be joined by correspondent and PBS NewsHour West Coast anchor Stephanie Sy, The Cook Political Report’s national editor Amy Walter, POLITICO chief Washington correspondent Ryan Lizza, and national political correspondent Laura Barrón-López.
Debate No. 6 will be moderated by PBS NewsHour anchor and managing editor Judy Woodruff, POLITICO chief political correspondent Tim Alberta, PBS NewsHour senior national correspondent Amna Nawaz and White House correspondent Yamiche Alcindor. After a first wave of contenders including Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren had their shot last night, ten more candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination took the stage in Detroit tonight for a lively — and loud! — debate on CNN.
Former vice president Joe Biden was joined by California senator Kamala Harris, New Jersey senator Cory Booker, New York senator Kirsten Gillibrand and six more Democrats vying to take on Republican incumbent Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election. And things got fiery early, with moderators Jake Tapper, Dana Bash and Don Lemon doing their best to keep things civil… and keep the crowd quiet.
Among the night’s notable moments:
* As the candidates first took the stage, Biden jokingly asked Harris to “go easy on me, kid,” referring to their heated battles in the last debate.
* Opening statements by New York mayor Bill de Blasio and Booker were both interrupted by protestors in the crowd shouting, “Fire Pantaleo!” (They were referring to NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo, who has not yet been charged for his role in the death of Eric Garner.) Booker got the worst of it, but CNN did allow him to pause and finish his statement in full.
* A long, mind-numbing debate on health care pitted Biden against Harris once again, with Biden slamming the high cost of her Medicare For All proposal (and calling the idea that it’d be free to consumers “a bunch of malarkey”), and Harris hitting back against the massive profits made by private health insurance companies each year.
* Another interruption came during Biden’s answer on immigration reform, with a heckler chanting, “Three million deportation!” referring to the number of undocumented immigrants deported during the Obama administration. Former HUD secretary Julian Castro pounced on the opportunity to hit Biden on that statistic, saying: “It looks like one of us has learned the lessons of the past, and one hasn’t.” Booker piled on by chiding Biden for his habit of invoking Obama’s legacy: “You can’t do it when it’s convenient, and then dodge it when it’s not.”
* Booker also slammed Biden for his record on criminal justice reform, accusing him of throwing drug users behind bars for life just to appear “tough on crime.” When Biden tried to take shots at the crime rate in Booker’s native Newark, Booker fired back with an old saying from his childhood: “You’re dipping into the Kool-Aid, and you don’t even know the flavor.”
* Gillibrand got off probably the best one-liner of the night, though, when she claimed: “The first thing that I’m going to do when I’m President is, I am going to Clorox the Oval Office.”
If you’d still like to hear more from the candidates, a third set of Democratic debates is scheduled to air Sept. 12 and 13 via ABC News and Univision.
Choose up to three Night 2 candidates that impressed you the most — and who has the best chance to defeat Trump — and then hit the comments to discuss your choices.

The Democratic presidential race kicked off Round 2 on Tuesday night, as half of the 20 candidates currently in the mix debated live on CNN, for nearly three hours.
CNN’s Jake Tapper, Dana Bash and Don Lemon cracked the whip loudly and often during the proceedings, earning some admonishment on social media for continually cutting off respondents just as they were getting to the meat of their answer.
Among the night’s notable moments:
* Ohio representative Tim Ryan raised eyebrows by failing to put his hand over heart during the National Anthem.
* Elizabeth Warren earned claps for responding to a toothless POV from John Delaney by saying, “I don’t understand why anybody goes to all the trouble of running to be the president of the United States to talk about what we really can’t do and shouldn’t fight for.”
* When Ryan argued that Bernie Sanders didn’t know whether “Medicare For All” would provide union members with better health coverage, Sanders shot back, “I do know that — I wrote the damn bill!”
* Pete Buttigieg urged contenders to not worry about what Republicans say about their policies, noting, “If we embrace a far-left agenda, they are gonna say we’re a bunch of crazy socialists. If we embrace a conservative agenda… they’re going to say we’re a bunch of crazy socialists. So let’s just stand up for the right policy, go out there and defend it.”
* Multiple candidates referred to President Donald Trump’s pattern of “racism” and “xenophobia” (as Sanders for one put it).
Night 2 of Round 2, airing Wednesday at 8/7c, brings us Colorado senator Michael Bennet, former VP Joe Biden, New Jersey senator Cory Booker, for HUD secretary Julian Castro, New York mayor Bill de Blasio, Hawaii representative Tulsi Gabbard, New York senator Kirsten Gillibrand, California senator Kamala Harris, Washington governor Jay Inslee and tech exec Andrew Yang.
Choose up to two Night 1 candidates that impressed you the most, and then hit the comments to discuss your choices.

And another 10 contenders for the Democratic party’s presidential nomination faced off at Miami’s Adrienne Arsht Center for Performing Arts on Thursday night.
For two hours, the candidates — Michael Bennet, Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg, Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris, John Hickenlooper, Bernie Sanders, Eric Swalwell, Marianne Williamson and Andrew Yang — fielded questions from NBC’s Savannah Guthrie, Lester Holt and Chuck Todd, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow and Telemundo’s José Diaz-Balart. (From the Night 1 crop, Elizabeth Warren, Julian Castro and Cory Booker emerged as the “winners“, per a TVLine poll.)
Before you head to our “voting booth,” a few memorable moments from Night 2:
* Signaling that Trump would be discussed and without any mincing of words, Sanders roared (as he pretty much did everything). “Trump is a phony, he is a pathological liar, he is a racist, and he lied to the American people during his campaign…. That’s how we beat Trump — expose him for the fraud he is.”
* When asked how Democrats pitching big plans would pay for them, Harris marveled, “Where was that question when the Republicans and Donald Trump passed a tax bill that benefits the top 1%.. .and contributed at least $ 1 trillion to the debt of America?”
* After Swalwell shaded Biden by citing his decades-old call to “pass the torch” to a new generation, the moment segued into a full-stage squabble. Harris shut the murmuring down by saying, ”America does not want to witness a food fight, they want to know how we’ll put food on their table.”
* In perhaps the most resonant “show of hands” display across the two-night debate series, all 10 candidates signaled that they would provide healthcare coverage for undocumented immigrants (triggering Trump’s first debate tweet of the night).
* Yang showed up sans necktie!
* Buttigieg on how Republicans far more than Democrats like to (think they) bring religion into things: “We should call out hypocrisy when we see it. God wouldn’t condone putting children in cages” and anyone who supports that practice “has lost all claim to ever use religious language again.”
* “As the only black person on the stage, I would like to speak on the subject of race,” Harris said, claiming her time and launching into the night’s most charged moment. Her comments eventually targeted Biden, to whom she said, “I do not believe you are a racist,” and yet he opposed busing when she was age 9. Following Biden’s middling response, she declared, “On this subject [of race] it cannot be an intellectual debate among Democrats. We have to take it seriously, and we have to act swiftly.
* With her closing statement, author Williamson warned that she is going to beat Donald Trump with “love.”
Now we want to know what you think. Choose the Night 2 candidates that impressed you the most — followed by the best challengers to Trump — and then hit the comments to discuss your choices!
