Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon speaks to reporters at the US Capitol.

  • Democrats' Inflation Reduction Act contains nearly $ 80 billion in funding for the IRS.
  • Republicans have said that the funding will go towards hiring an "army" of IRS agents.
  • Sen. Ron Wyden said that Republicans want to save their billionaire friends from audits.

The IRS is set to get nearly $ 80 billion from Democrats' big climate and tax spending package, earmarked to help the overstrained agency improve tax enforcement and customer service — and Republicans haven't been pleased.

Republicans have seized upon the idea that the increased funding could result in an "army" of 87,000 agents, although that number comes from a Treasury Department report estimating that the IRS could hire that many new employees by 2031, according to Time, and a Treasury Department official told Time that the majority of the new hires won't even be IRS agents.

"If Democrats are going to keep declaring everything to be free, Biden is going to need a lot more taxpayer money," Senator Rick Scott, a Republican from Florida, said in prepared floor remarks on Wednesday, speaking on his legislation to rescind the funding for the IRS. "That, my fellow Americans, is how we get full circle back to the supersized IRS. It's a vicious cycle to fund a radical, socialist agenda.

But Senator Ron Wyden, the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, isn't humoring that argument.

"Even senators who should supposedly know better are spinning wild fantasy stories about 87,000 agents who are armed to the teeth and coming to the doors of innocent small business people," Wyden said in floor remarks on Wednesday.

Instead, he said, "by attacking the IRS, Republicans are helping high-flying tax cheats get away with breaking the law." The agency is "badly outmatched" by wealthy tax cheats, Wyden said; IRS commissioner Charles Rettig has said that the amount of taxes going uncollected every year could be upwards of $ 1 trillion. A 2021 study from IRS researchers and academics found that the top 1% of American earners did not report about 21% of their income.

"What so many Republicans want to do is preserve the status quo, so only the little guys get audited while billionaire friends" get off scot-free, Wyden said.

Instead, Wyden stressed that some of the funding would go towards customer service, something that the embattled agency has particularly struggled with since the onset of the pandemic. With a shrinking budget and low staffing levels compounded by new pandemic-era responsibilities like stimulus checks, the IRS accumulated a backlog of millions of unprocessed returns — which it's still digging its way out of. Those processing delays — paired with the IRS's inability to answer the phone and provide prompt customer service — have meant some Americans waited months to receive thousands in tax refunds.

"The far right and the wealthy tax cheats want the IRS to apparently continue to struggle because it makes it easier to attack and vilify. That's why we've heard so many falsehoods about thousands of new IRS agents," Wyden said. "I don't know where this number came from, absent nonsense, conjured out of nothing."

RESULTS: Democrat Mary Peltola defeats Sarah Palin in Alaska US House special election https://briefnews.eu/results-democrat-mary-peltola-defeats-sarah-palin-in-alaska-us-house-special-election/ https://briefnews.eu/results-democrat-mary-peltola-defeats-sarah-palin-in-alaska-us-house-special-election/#respond Thu, 01 Sep 2022 00:38:07 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/results-democrat-mary-peltola-defeats-sarah-palin-in-alaska-us-house-special-election/ 2022 Alaska Primaries

The races & the stakes

Democrat Mary Peltola won the US House special election for Alaska's at-large US House seat, vacated by the death of longtime Rep. Don Young in March.

Peltola's win makes her the first-ever woman to represent Alaska in the US House, the first Alaska Native person to serve in Congress, and the first Democrat to represent Alaska in the House since 1972.

Peltola, Republicans Sarah Palin and Nick Begich III, and Independent Al Gross, who subsequently dropped out of the race, advanced out of the June primary to the August general, which was held with ranked-choice voting. Peltola will serve out the rest of Young's term through January 2023.

Palin, a former governor and 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee, attempted a political comeback and vied to win a seat in the House.

Palin, Peltola, Begich, and Republican Tara Sweeney also advanced to the regular primary election to represent Alaska's at-large House seat for a full term, which was held concurrently with the special general election.

The 2022 elections are the first held under Alaska's brand-new top-four primary voting system, approved in 2020. All candidates from all party affiliations run on the same primary ballot and the top four advance to the general election, which is then held under a ranked-choice voting system.

The new system was expected to help insulate GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski, seeking a third term in office, from being defeated by a primary challenger endorsed by President Donald Trump. Murkowski, who drew Trump's ire by voting to convict him for inciting the January 6 insurrection, is now facing a Trump-backed primary challenger in Kelly Tshibaka.

Murkowski, Tshibaka, and Democrat Patricia Chesbro had advanced out of the primary and onto the general.

Murkowski faced her Trump-backed primary challenger on the same day as GOP Rep. Liz Cheney lost to Trump-endorsed Harriet Hageman in Wyoming's at-large House seat. Cheney voted to impeach Trump and now is investigating his role in the insurrection as the vice-chair of the January 6 Committee.

Four of the 10 GOP House members who voted to impeach Trump — Cheney, Rep. Tom Rice of South Carolina, Rep. Peter Meijer of Michigan, and Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler of Washington — have lost reelection to Trump-backed primary challengers. Out of the seven GOP Senators who voted to convict Trump in the Senate, Murkowski is the only one up for reelection in 2022.

In addition to Congress, GOP Gov. Mike Dunleavy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Dalhstorm are seeking another term in office. But Dunleavy faces two serious primary challengers, state Rep. Christopher Kurka and Charlie Pierce, mayor of the Kenai Borough Penninsula, challenging him from his right, Alaska Public Media reports.

Rebel Democrat Tulsi Gabbard hints at 2020 run with a tour of first primary states https://briefnews.eu/rebel-democrat-tulsi-gabbard-hints-at-2020-run-with-a-tour-of-first-primary-states/ https://briefnews.eu/rebel-democrat-tulsi-gabbard-hints-at-2020-run-with-a-tour-of-first-primary-states/#respond Tue, 04 Dec 2018 02:59:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rebel-democrat-tulsi-gabbard-hints-at-2020-run-with-a-tour-of-first-primary-states/ Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) has indicated her desire to run for president in 2020. The outspoken anti-war advocate said that she is thinking of how she can “best be of service” to the US in a meet-up in New Hampshire.

Speculation has been rife that Gabbard, who backed Bernie Sanders in 2016, is contemplating a presidential bid of her own. However, the popular Hawaii Democrat was tight-lipped about the prospect so far, despite making a series of appearances at high-profile progressive events, firing up her base in Iowa and New Hampshire, the first and the second states to host nationwide party primary elections.

Gabbard was in New Hampshire to drum up support for her progressive cause on Sunday, when she was asked whether she had already set a date for the big announcement. Short of providing an unequivocal response, Gabbard said that she has been “seriously thinking of how I can be best of service to our country.”

If she ventures to join what is expected to become a crowded field of Democratic contestants, Gabbard might have to face off with Sanders, who also recently signalled another run.

Asked whether the Vermont Senator’s decision would influence hers, Gabbard made clear a possible clash is not on the list of her concerns.

“I think you’d better ask him what his plans are, I’m thinking about how I can be best of service to our country,” she doubled down.

Addressing a packed audience at Rockingham County on Sunday, Gabbard covered many nationwide issues, such as the dominance of big corporate money in US politics and the “counter-productive” interventionist policy of the successive US administrations.

“I’ve been meeting with progressive leaders and activists who are doing the work that’s necessary on the ground to make the kind of change that we need to see across the country at the local level and the national level,” she told Honolulu Civil Beat in the wake of the meeting.

Rumors of Gabbard’s anticipated run have been circling for several months. In September, she headlined a summit of several hundred progressive and grassroots activists in New Hampshire.

In October, Gabbard was one of the keynote speakers in the annual Johnson County Democrats fundraiser in Iowa, where she was reportedly cheered on by supporters to consider a presidential campaign.

Gabbard resigned as Democratic National Committee (DNC) vice-chair in early 2016 to endorse Sanders and has long since fallen out with the Democratic establishment.

She angered the mainstream left by going on a private fact-finding mission to Syria in 2017, during which she met with President Bashar Assad and other officials. Gabbard, an Iraq War veteran, argues that the US’s primary goal in Syria is to topple the Assad government through terrorist proxies on the ground.

The anti-interventionist congresswoman, known for speaking her mind, recently drew a massive backlash for pointing out that the Trump administration acts “as protectors of AQ [Al-Qaeda] in Syria/Idlib.”

Gabbard also recently called Trump “Saudi Arabia’s b*tch” for his decision to stand with Saudi Arabia in the aftermath of the killing of Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi.

If Gabbard does run, she would be joining what promises to be a tightly-contested field, as several prominent Democratic party figures have already indicated similar intentions, including Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey, Kamala Harris of California and Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who recently said that she would “take a hard look” at the prospect of running in 2020.

Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is not entirely out of the game either, as rumors of her launching another presidential bid endure.
