For a team trying really hard to avoid using the word "rebuild," it certainly looks like Montreal is doing exactly that after sending captain Max Pacioretty to Vegas and shipping off sometimes centre Alex Galchenyuk to Arizona. However, all-world goalie Carey Price and his eight-year, $ 84 million US contract, which kicks in this season, remain. At 31 years old, Price is coming off the worst of his 11 NHL seasons (16-26-7, .900 SV%, 3.11 GAA). While his team floundered to a 28th-place finish last season, Price struggled through various injuries, including a lower-body issue and a concussion. If he can stay healthy, Montreal will be hoping that Price can come close to the form that won him the Vezina Trophy, Ted Lindsay Award and the Hart Trophy in 2014-15. And with an already weak defence corps made worse by Shea Weber being out until at least December due to knee surgery, the Canadiens are going to have to lean on Price yet again. General manager Marc Bergevin insists his team's step back is just a "reset," but how long will a player of Price's calibre be willing to wait? Here's what you need to know about every Canadian NHL team: Up front, the picture isn't at all improved. The Habs still lack a bona fide No. 1 centre – something Bergevin hasn't been able to address in his more than six-year tenure. Montreal's offence was 29th last season (2.52 GF/GP), with Brendan Gallagher (31G, 23A) leading the way with just 54 points. It appears they're counting on a crop of young forwards, which also includes an unproven Max Domi (9-36-45 with Arizona last season) and Jonathan Drouin (13-33-46), to find some sort of scoring touch. At least they'll have the leadership of veteran centre Tomas Plekanec (6-20-26), who returned as a free agent after being traded at the deadline to the Leafs. With division rivals like Toronto, Tampa Bay and Boston taking steps forward this off-season, it's not exactly a promising outlook. Those teams will likely take up room at the top of the Atlantic Division, making the odds slim of Montreal reaching the playoffs with its current roster. Last year's abysmal season allowed them to draft promising centre Jesperi Kotkaniemi third overall, so it's not all bad news. 2017-2018 record: 29-40-13 (71 points) 6th in Atlantic Division, missed playoffs New faces: F Tomas Tatar, F Max Domi, F Joel Armia, F Tomas Plekanec Key forwards: Jonathan Drouin, Tomas Tatar, Max Domi, Brendan Gallagher, Paul Byron Key defencemen: Shea Weber, Jeff Petry, Victor Mete, Karl Alzner No. 1 goaltender: Carey Price

It’s one of the oddest sensations. That feeling where you are in a new situation, or a completely new environment, but you get an intense feeling of familiarity. For no apparent reason, you feel like you’re reliving a past experience.
It’s called déjà vu, which is French for “already seen,” and it happens to an estimated 70% of the population, according to How Stuff Works, with people aged between 15 and 25 years old experiencing it most.
Unless it’s happened to you, it’s a hard experience to explain, but it’s a bit like trying to remember a dream that is slipping away. And as soon as you rack your brain to try and think back to when you might have experienced something familiar, the feeling is gone.
Déjà vu is difficult to study as it is so fleeting. It has puzzled researchers as to how to replicate it in a laboratory environment. This has led to a few different theories over time about how and why our brains act this strange way.
Back in 2006, scientists at the Leeds Memory Group thought they had gone some way to recreating the sensation in a lab by using hypnosis to trigger part of the brain’s recognition process. The experiment was based on the theory that two key processes happen in the brain when we recognise something or someone familiar.
Firstly, our brains search through our memories to see if we’ve observed the scene before, and if it comes up with a match, a separate area of the brain identifies it as familiar. In déjà vu, the second part of the process could be triggered by accident.
The researchers recruited 18 volunteers, who were asked to look at 24 common words. Then they were hypnotised and told that when they were presented with a word in a red frame, it would feel familiar. Words in green frames would make them think the word was in the original list of 24.
After being taken out of hypnosis, the subjects were given a series of words in different coloured frames, including some words that didn’t appear in the original list. In the group, 10 said they felt a peculiar sensation when they saw new words in red frames, and 5 said it felt like they were having déjà vu.
Over the years, psychologists have come up with a few different theories for déjà vu.
It could be some sort of malfunctioning between the long and short term circuits in the brain, meaning new information may take a shortcut straight to long-term memory. This skips over the mechanisms the brain normally uses to store information, so it could feel like we are experiencing something from the past.
It could also be something to do with the rhinal cortex, which is an area of the brain that makes us feel familiarity. It could somehow be activated without triggering other areas associated with memory. That could explain why it’s so difficult to pin down what feels familiar about the déjà vu. It’s usually a vague familiarity, not a specific object or person.
A fourth theory is that the feeling déjà vu is set off by false memories. Psychologist Valerie F. Reyna came up with one of the leading theories for false memories. She told Business Insider:
“[Déjà vu] is certainly related to false memory in the sense that it is a memory dissociation kind of effect. It dissociates reality from your memory.
“There’s all kinds of different dissociative experiences that can happen. Sometimes you cannot be sure, for example, if you dreamed something or experienced it, if you saw it in a movie or it happened in real life.”
Work last year by psychology researcher Akira O’Connor, however, suggested false memories may not be to blame. Instead, it could be a sign of the brain checking its memory.
O’Connor and his team scanned the brains of 21 volunteers while doing a common test for triggering false memories, New Scientist reported.
To do this, you give a person a list of related words, such as bed, night, snooze, and nap. Then, when the person is asked about the words afterwards, they tend to give words related to what they’ve heard — in this case it would be “sleep.”
To try and create the feeling of déjà vu, the researchers asked the subjects if they heard any words beginning with “s,” which they replied they hadn’t. But when they asked about the word “sleep,” they were able to remember they couldn’t have heard it, but it felt familiar all the same.
The team expected to see areas of the brain associated with memory — such as the hippocampus — light up. But it didn’t. Instead, areas involved in decision making were active.
When presenting the findings at the International Conference on Memory in Budapest, O’Connor said he thinks the frontal regions of the brain could be flipping through our memories, then sending signals if there’s a mismatch between what we think we’ve experienced and what we actually have experienced.
“Brain regions associated with memory conflict, rather than false memory, appear to be driving the déjà vu experience,” O’Connor wrote in a blog post about the findings.
“This is consistent with our idea of déjà vu as the conscious awareness of a discrepancy in memory signals being corrected. This, in turn, sheds some light on why déjà vu occurrence appears to decline with age despite the fact that memory errors tend to increase with age. If it’s not an error, but the prevention of an error, this makes a lot more sense.”

This weekend, Happy Death Day will give audiences that old familiar feeling that they’ve seen something like this before. Because they have: it’s a slasher movie take on Groundhog Day. But Groundhog Day isn’t the only film to use the time loop scenario.
Ever have deja vu? The feeling that you’ve been somewhere, or said something, or did something already and are inexplicably repeating it? I’m sure you have, and if you haven’t, you’ve probably seen Groundhog Day, the Bill Murray comedy where he finds himself reliving the same day over and over again until he gets it right. Groundhog Day may be the most popular example of this trend, but it’s not the only film or TV show to tackle the concept. Happy Death Day is just the most recent example, but here are some more films are basically Groundhog Day rip-offs.
How similar is it to Groundhog Day?
First things first: Groundhog Day didn’t invent the time loop scenario. Richard Lupoff published a short story in 1973 called 12:01, about an executive reliving the same day of his life over and over again. The story was adapted twice, first into a short film and then a feature film. The short film came out in 1990, before Groundhog Day, and the feature hit theaters in 1993, the same year as Groundhog Day. The coincidences of the time loop premise were similar enough that Lupoff and Jonathan Heap, the co-writer of the short film and feature, mulled over a potential lawsuit, but it never came to pass. The feature film stars Jonathan Silverman (remember him?) as a man stuck in a 24-hour time loop, trying to save the woman he loves (Helen Slater) from being murdered. Like Groundhog Day, the same day plays out again and again.
What does it do differently than Groundhog Day?
Groundhog Day famously never explains why the time loop is happening. It just happens. 12:01 attempts to explain the phenomenon with both a particle accelerator and having the main character receive an electrical shock. So word to the wise: don’t get an electrical shock, or you might get stuck reliving the same day over and over again. 12:01 is also a thriller, which is much different than the comedic Groundhog Day.

Lola (Franka Potente) has to score 100,000 Deutsche Mark in twenty minutes or her boyfriend will die. What follows is a frantic, frenetic flick from Tom Tykwer that has the same scenario unfolding three different times, in three different ways. Like Groundhog, we see an event, see it repeated, and see it begin to diverge from the way we initially experienced it, until the main character gets things right.
What does it do differently than Groundhog Day?
Run Lola Run isn’t really a time loop movie, per se. Lola is never aware she’s in a loop, and she’s never trying to find a way to break out of said loop. Instead, the film is just using the time loop premise to recreate the same set-up in three different ways, highlighting the many different ways the same story could possibly unfold. It’s more of a stylish excuse to explore philosophical concepts of free will.

I don’t have to recap The X-Files for you, right? You know the basic premise: FBI Agents Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) explore the paranormal on a weekly basis. In the sixth season episode “Monday,” Mulder and Scully find themselves trapped in a loop during a bank robbery that keeps going terribly wrong, with many people – including our two heroes – dying. Like Groundhog Day, the same events, beat for beat, will unfold before our eyes, often in humorous ways. And once again, the goal is to get things right to finally break that damn loop.
What does it do differently than Groundhog Day?
In an interesting twist on the formula, the main characters aren’t the ones who are aware they’re stuck in the loop. Instead, a character named Pam (Carrie Hamilton), the girlfriend of the bank robber, is the one who is aware of the loop, and she’s the one trying to break it. Another twist on the formula: in Groundhog Day, and other films here, when the person aware they’re in the loop dies they often simply wake up and start all over again. Here, Pam’s death is the thing that finally closes the loop. Maybe. Or maybe she’s still stuck in it somewhere. (Cue the spooky X-Files theme).
How similar is it to Groundhog Day?
Oh boy, how on earth can I even begin to sum up Primer, Shane Carruth’s mind-bending 2004 time travel film? I can’t – it’s impossible. The film is complex and weird, but also fantastic. It’s taken me about seven re-watches to understand just what the hell is going on here, and even now I’m not 100% sure. Nonetheless, the film involves two friends (Carruth and David Sullivan) who discover a method of time travel. What follows is a slowly unfolding existential nightmare that all turns out to be one big loop. The event that opens the film ends up being the event that ends the film, starting things all over again. Who knows how many times it’s happened? It might even be happening right now.
What does it do differently than Groundhog Day?
Beyond the looping scenario, Primer is really nothing like Groundhog Day, but I felt I’d be remiss if I left it off here. While Groundhog Day is having a bit of fun with its loop, the realization that a loop is happening in Primer is a bit terrifying.
How similar is it to Groundhog Day?
Remember Day Break? It’s okay if you don’t. This 2006 TV series only lasted one season, and then almost everyone had it surgically removed from their memory. Taye Diggs starred as a cop forced to relive the same day again and again. Unfortunately for him, it’s the day he’s framed for murder. Each episode had Diggs’ character trying to find out who the real killer was before everything reset. Just like Groundhog Day, each day reset begins with the main character looking warily at his alarm clock as the time rolls over.
What does it do differently than Groundhog Day?
While each day’s reset in Day Break occurs at the same time, like Groundhog Day, the episodes themselves could pick up at anytime during the predestined day. In Groundhog Day, any injuries – fatal or otherwise – that Bill Murray’s character sustains vanish the minute the day resets to start all over again. In Day Break, injuries Diggs’ character suffered remained even as the day reset, which is kind of a bummer and takes all the fun out of a time loop.

The volatile Australian stormed off after losing the first set 7-6 (7-5) in a tiebreaker.
Kyrgios’s dramatic walk-off comes a year after he was suspended from the ATP Tour for tanking at the Shanghai Masters and leaves his immediate playing future in doubt once again.
The 22-year-old had received two code violations for unsportsmanlike conduct and expressed his dismay at the chair umpire for copping a point penalty during the tiebreaker.
He was picked up on TV telling his courtside entourage he would stop if he lost the set, which he did.
Runner-up to world No.1 Rafael Nadal in the China Open final, Kyrgios had been making a run towards the season-ending World Tour Finals before handing Johnson a mid-match walkover.
He was sitting 15th in the Race to London, where the top eight players of the year will assemble for the prestigious round-robin event.
But he will now almost certainly come under serious scrutiny from officials for quitting a match at the very same venue where he was accused of not giving his best efforts 12 months ago.
The moment before Russian president Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Donald Trump locked palms has been compared to a scene from the popular political drama ‘House of Cards.’

Donald Trump’s ascend to the White House has often been compared to something out of fiction.
But on Friday at the G20 Summit, Trump’s meeting with Putin in front of the cameras took on the uncanny resemblance of a scene from a Netflix series.
The two leaders are in Hamburg as part of a meeting between international leaders to discuss pressing global issues such as Syria, climate change, global finance, migration and terrorism.
The G20 summit has already yielded two handshakes between Putin and Trump, with the second official greeting garnering the most interest due to its resemblance to a scene in chapter 29 of the ‘House of Cards.’
In the 2015 episode, the fictionalized US President Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) and President of the Russian Federation Viktor Petrov (Lars Mikkelsen) are at loggerheads over a European missile defense system.

But there doesn’t appear to have been the same animosity in real-life, according to US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who said the pair had “positive chemistry”.
However, Putin did appear to look down on Trump’s open hand gesture just before shaking it.

For Canadian hockey players, it’s never been easy to deal with a shootout loss.
And for the second time in four-and-a-half months at a major international tournament, there was Canada, once again, on the losing end of a gold-medal final shootout.
This time it was Sweden skating away with a 2-1 shootout victory to claim gold in Cologne, Germany over Ryan O’Reilly, Matt Duchene and Canada to end a bid for a third World championship in a row.
Just like the World junior final on Jan. 6, a game the United States won 5-4 thanks to a shootout, this was no way to end a championship tilt. But the International Ice Hockey Federation has settled its tournaments like this for decades and Canadians have felt the pain for decades.
I still maintain the 1998 Canadian Olympic team was as good as any of the Canadian clubs that claimed gold in 2002, 2010 and 2014. But Wayne Gretzky and Co. were simply foiled by the best goaltender in the world at the time, Dominik Hasek, in a shootout.
For those of us old enough, we’ll never forget the 1994 Olympic gold-medal final in Lillehammer, Norway. The Peter Forsberg postage-stamp shootout goal against Canadian goalie Corey Hirsch was the difference. But we all came away from that Winter Games so proud of Todd Hlushko, Brad Schlegel and the rest of that underdog Canadian bunch.
Just like this time. Who’s not a Ryan O’Reilly fan? The bearded Buffalo Sabres forward was so dominant. I hope one day he gets a shot at Olympic gold to go with his two World championship gold medals and his World Cup of hockey title last September.
But let’s not get sucked into the vortex of a shootout debate. We all know this is a terrible way to end a hockey game. We’ve grown up with the dramatic overtime games of the Stanley Cup playoffs that end in the wee hours of the morning. It’s a treat.
The European-based IIHF has its soccer influence. If World Cup soccer finals are decided in OT then why not hockey?
Canadian head coach Jon Cooper was spot on with his remarks after the shootout loss.
“We sat in our locker room and don’t feel like we lost a hockey game tonight, we feel like we lost a shootout,” the native of Prince George, B.C. said. “I told our guys, ‘[hold] your head high.’
“We knew the rules going in, it was part of the format, and they bested us. I thought both goalies were exceptional, but in the end, it came down to a skill competition and they were better than us and they are deserving world champs.”
Good for Sweden goalie Henrik Lundqvist, one of the truly solid professionals in the game. Time is ticking for the 35-year-old Swede. He won two Le Mat Cups (Swedish titles) with Frolunda and his brother Joel in 2002-03 and 2004-05, and Olympic gold in 2006. He now has that elusive world title and it will be interesting to see if he can lasso a Stanley Cup championship as his career winds down.
Canada was seeking its third World title in a row, something it has not accomplished since the Edmonton Mercurys, Lethbridge Maple Leafs and Edmonton Mercurys, again, won consecutive championships representing Canada in 1950, 1951 and 1952, respectively.
O’Reilly and Duchene were trying to become the first Canadian players to win three in a row.
But what a run. Canada had an incredible 27-1-2 record in the last three World championship tournaments. The only loss in regulation time was to Finland in the preliminary round in 2016. The other two defeats were a preliminary round overtime loss to Switzerland last week and the shootout loss to Sweden on Sunday.
Hockey in this country continues to be in a good place, judging by the success of Canada at the last two Olympics and the past three World championships. Three different head coaches (Todd McLellan, Bill Peters and Cooper) steered Canada the last three World tournaments and 54 different players suited up to win two gold medals and settle for a silver this time.
From this tournament, fans of the Canadian game likely gained an appreciation for goalie Calvin Pickard of Winnipeg, defencemen Colton Parayko of St. Albert, Alta. and Chris Lee of MacTier, Ont., the only non-NHLer on Canada’s roster.
The 36-year-old Lee plays in Russia for Magnitogorsk Metallurg and Canadian coach Mike Pelino. Maybe Lee will be an anchor for the Canadian Olympic team in Pyeongchang, South Korea in eight months time if NHL commissioner Gary Bettman continues his stubborn stance to prohibit NHLers from participating in the Olympics.
If the NHLers stay home and its this country’s best juniors, AHLers and those playing pro in Europe who will represent Canada at the 2018 Olympics, they will be worth getting to know and Canada will have a shot at gold because of the depth in this country and winning spirit.
