DEHYDRATION is when you don’t have enough fluid in your body. If it’s left untreated, serious health problems can occur. One of the signs and symptoms to indicate the condition can be spotted in the colour of urine.![]()
Muscle cramps are painful moments when the muscle suddenly and involuntarily contracts.
If you’ve ever had to stop suddenly, you know what it can feel like.
Though often harmless, these muscle cramps could also be a sign of something more serious, like dehydration or vitamin deficiency.
They can happen at any time, but most people have them at night or when resting, and can last for anywhere between a few seconds to a quarter of an hour.
When they occur, you may be temporarily unable to control the affected muscle.
Dehydration, or a harmful reduction in the amount of water in the body, can cause muscle cramps, according to the NHS.
This is more likely to happen on hot days, such as those forecast for this bank holiday weekend, as you are more likely to sweat due to the temperature or exercise.
The sweat causes your body to lose water, and electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium, increasing your risk of muscle cramp.
To avoid this, drink plenty of water.
The government recommends six to eight glasses normally, but you should increase this in hot weather.
The NHS says you should drink “regularly” in hot weather, but this will vary depending on the person.
The national healthcare provider also advised that during a heat wave, which is not yet forecast, you should avoid drinking “excess alcohol, caffeine (tea, coffee and cola) or drinks high in sugar.”
You can tell if you’re dehydrated if you feel thirsty, or your urine becomes a darker colour. Although, this colour change can also be caused by eating certain foods, such as beetroot.
Muscle cramps can also be caused by an inadequate blood supply, nerve compression or vitamin deficiencies, according to the Mayo Clinic.
“Too little potassium, calcium or magnesium in your diet can contribute to leg cramps,” says the US healthcare advisor.
“Diuretics – medications often prescribed for high blood pressure – also can deplete these minerals.”
Similarly, summer walks may also cause muscle cramps as they may compress nerves in your spine.
“The pain usually gets worse the longer you’re walking,” says the Mayo Clinic.
“Walking in a slightly flexed position – such as you would use when pushing a shopping cart ahead of you – may improve or delay the onset of your symptoms.”
An inadequate blood supply due to a narrowing of artery walls which may happen while you’re exercising, can also produce cramp like symptoms, although these usually go away as soon as you finish exercising.
As another method of treating cramp the NHS recommends trying stretching exercises or taking quinine tablets “if your cramps are very bad and exercise hasn’t helped”.
The Mayo Clinic recommends you “stretch before and after you use any muscle for an extended period. If you tend to have leg cramps at night, stretch before bedtime.
“Light exercise, such as riding a stationary bicycle for a few minutes before bed, also may help prevent cramps while you’re sleeping”.
MUSCLE cramps risk can increase during hot weather, if you don’t drink enough water. Vitamin deficiencies, ageing and medication can also drive the painful condition. You should do this to avoid muscle cramps.![]()
Motorists are being warned about the dangerous effects of driving whilst dehydrated.
During the summer months, it can be tough to stay hydrated – especially during a long drive.
However, it is vital to carry liquids and make sure you’re hydrated while behind the wheel.
New research conducted by Leasing Options has revealed that more than two in three (67%) UK drivers fail to recognise the major symptoms of dehydration.
Symptoms include slower reaction times, loss of focus and muscle cramps – potentially putting drivers and others at risk.
Driver error accounts for more than two thirds (68 per cent) of vehicle crashes in the UK.
With the potential loss in concentration and focus caused by dehydration, drivers could run into harm behind the wheel.
Health authorities recommend drinking around two litres of water a day, but Leasing Options found that 37 per cent of those surveyed only drink one litre of water a day, with 18 per cent drinking less than one litre a day.
Over 84 per cent of drivers believe that drink driving is more dangerous that dehydrated driving.
However, a new study by Loughborough University revealed that mild dehydration is equivalent to being over the drink driving limit with regards to its impact on the drive.
Iain Temperton, Director of Communications at Road Safety GB, said: “Before you start a journey you should make sure your vehicle is prepared, but just as importantly you should ensure that you are ready and fit to drive.
“Driving on our ever more congested network is a task that requires full concentration.
“Making sure you are fully hydrated is a vital part of that process; the safety of vulnerable road users around you depends upon it.”
Mike Thompson, Brand Manager at Leasing Options, said: “At Leasing Options we pride ourselves on our safety measures and we think British drivers need to be more aware of the risks and symptoms of dehydrated driving during the hot summer weather in order to make our roads a safer place.

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Reuters) – Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, appearing fully recovered from dehydration suffered while helping to build a home for charity in Canada, was released from an overnight hospital stay on Friday and addressed the project’s closing ceremony.
Carter, 92, collapsed while working on Thursday at the Winnipeg construction site for Habitat for Humanity, which promotes affordable home ownership, and was taken to St. Boniface General Hospital for medical treatment and tests.
By Friday morning, Carter was smiling as he returned to the building site to help kick off the project’s last day.
Hours later, he and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, 89, attended closing ceremonies at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Manitoba’s capital, receiving a rousing ovation from the crowd.
Dressed in blue jeans, a T-shirt and light-weight jacket, a relaxed, fit-looking Carter climbed a short flight of steps to the stage to salute Habitat’s members for their contributions.
“I look upon all the volunteers, in a very sincere way, as human rights heroes, and I thank you for it,” he said, and joked that his “bringing attention to this Habitat project was completely unintentional.”
The former first lady told the crowd her husband received a clean bill of health after an extensive battery of tests during his brief hospitalization, including from one test designed to detect heart damage.
The results showed “there has never been any kind of damage at all to Jimmy Carter’s heart,” she said. “I knew he had a good heart.”
Thursday’s health scare generated an outpouring of support for Carter, a Democrat who served in the White House from January 1977 to January 1981 and has lived longer after his term in office than any other president in U.S. history.

A high point of his presidency was Carter’s role in brokering the 1978 Camp David Accords that ushered in peace between Israel and Egypt.
But having left office profoundly unpopular, he is widely regarded as a better former president than he was a president, and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his humanitarian work.
Carter disclosed in August 2015 that he had been diagnosed with a form of skin cancer called melanoma that had spread to his brain and elsewhere and had been spotted during liver surgery.
But months later, Carter told the Maranatha Baptist Church, where he teaches Sunday school in his home town of Plains, Georgia, that his latest brain scan showed no sign of the disease.
Carter was in Canada for a project to build 150 new homes for needy families, celebrating the country’s 150th independence anniversary.

On Monday, prosecutors with the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office began an inquest into the events surrounding the death of Terrill Thomas and whether any staff of the Milwaukee County Jail should be criminally charged for his treatment, according to the Journal Sentinel.
In April 2016, Thomas, 38, was arrested and taken to the jail on charges that he fired shots at a man, then drove to a casino and fired two rounds while inside the building. His family has said Thomas, a bipolar man, was experiencing a mental breakdown at the time.
During his seven days without water at the jail, Thomas never requested medical attention. Staff eventually found Thomas dead from severe dehydration, a medical examiner concluded. Thomas was one of four people, including a newborn, that died at the Milwaukee County Jail in a six-month period in 2016.
Prosecutors have indicated that they believe jail policy was violated in the case, the Sentinel reported. The inquest will allow prosecutors to publicly question witnesses before a jury, which will then offer a recommendation into whether a probable cause exists to then press charges. Prosecutors can then choose whether or not to follow the jury’s verdict.
Assistant District Attorney Kurt Benkley said Monday that Thomas’ bipolar disorder, a condition the jail staff knew about, according to the Sentinel, rendered him “unable to tell people about his basic needs” while in jail.
In his opening statement, Benkley said surveillance video evidence indicates that three jail officers cut off water to Thomas’ cell as discipline for the inmate’s flooding of another cell.
The officers never documented the action or told supervisors, effectively allowing the water supply to remain turned off as Thomas’ health deteriorated.
“This order to shut off Mr. Thomas’ water was highly irregular and contrary to standard operating procedure in the jail,” Benkley said, according to the Sentinel.

Thomas did not receive water with meals in line with jail policy which dictates that inmates receive water through their cell sinks, prosecutors said. He lost about 35 pounds in the seven days he was in jail.
Other inmates held at the jail during Thomas’ incarceration have said they complained to jail staff about Thomas’ condition. At least 20 officers worked a shift during Thomas’ stay at the jail, the Sentinel reported.
Officers are expected to testify during the weeklong inquest that they were not aware of the water cut-off.

“If someone requests, ‘Can I get my water turned on?’ and I find out their water is off, I turn it on,” said one officer, Decorie Smith.
Smith said he was personally unaware of Thomas’ situation. Smith and his lieutenant said Monday that the sheriff’s office does not allow indefinite shut-off of an inmate’s drinking water.
Following the inquest procedure, jurors will address three questions, Benkley said, according to WITI. “What was the cause of Mr. Thomas’ death? Was it the result of criminal activity? And if so, who committed the crime?”

A bad temper is one surprising sign that you need a glass of water. If you are feeling grumpy – you might need to reach for a bottle of H2O.
“Dehydration can affect your mood, making you more irritable. Conversely, studies show well-hydrated people generally report to be happier, more focused and more alert,” Helen explained.
A sticky mouth is another one of the sure signs you could do with a hydrating beverage.
“One of the first signs of being dehydrated is having a dry and sticky mouth. You may also experience white residue on your lips,” Helen said.
Flagging at work? Struggling to concentrate is also a big sign you need a drink. Dizziness also occurs, as it does when you don’t eat enough and your blood sugar levels start to drop.
“As you become more dehydrated you may find it progressively difficult to concentrate, which may affect your work life,” Helen said.
A headache and feeling both mentally and physically tired is a sure sign you might need to get some water.
“If you start to feel tired or develop a headache during the day, it is always a good idea to have some fluid to top up your fluid stores. It’s common to be anxious and stressed when thirsty too,” Helen said.
Urine also gets darker and smellier when you are dehydrated, and you ability to play sports or exercise will drop drastically if you are thirsty.
Helen is working with Robinsons fruit juice, who found a 85 per cent of a cross section of UK adults reported they drink less than the recommended eight glasses of fluid.
So how much water should you drink?
According to Root7 – a company that develops innovative yet functional products to improve the way you drink – water makes up 70 per cent of a human’s body weight, and its important to be drink the right amount every day to keep our bodily functions in check.
The recommended daily water intake for men is three litres a day, while it’s 2.2 litres for women.
The NHS says: “Dehydration occurs when your body loses more fluid than you take in.”
“When the normal water content of your body is reduced, it upsets the balance of minerals (salts and sugar) in your body, which affects the way it functions.”
“Water makes up over two-thirds of the healthy human body. It lubricates the joints and eyes, aids digestion, flushes out waste and toxins, and keeps the skin healthy.”
