Retired tech tycoon Robert Tsao also announced that he had regained his Taiwanese identity after giving up his Singaporean citizenship.

  • A retired Taiwanese tech mogul is pledging his millions to fund training for civilian troops.
  • He says he'd pay a private military training outfit to train 3 million civilians for three years.
  • Taiwan has around 88,000 active-duty ground troops, compared to China's 1.04 million professionals.

A retired Taiwanese tech tycoon said on Thursday that he plans to use his own wealth to train more than 3 million "civilian warriors" to defend against a Chinese invasion.

Robert Tsao, 75, intends to use $ 33 million of his own cash to fund the effort, according to Taiwan News, an English-language news outlet on the self-governing democratic island.

Tsao also announced that he was renouncing his Singaporean citizenship in favor of regaining his Taiwanese identity in light of China's repeated military threats to Taiwan, per Taiwan News.

According to the outlet, Tsao said his money would go toward having the civilian troops trained for three years by the Kuma Academy, a private military outfit also known as the "Black Bear Academy."

The eventual 3 million "black bear warriors" could then work alongside Taiwan's military, Agence France Presse reported, citing Tsao.

Tsao also said that $ 13 million from the sum would be used to train 300,000 "marksmen," the outlet reported.

Tsao became one of Taiwan's most prominent business magnates after founding United Microelectronics Corps in 1980. He no longer holds a position in the company.

As Insider reported, Taiwan has around 88,000 active-duty ground troops, compared to mainland China's 1.04 million professional soldiers. However, the island also has around 1.5 million reservists — civilians who have completed a four-month mandatory national service.

It's unclear if the "black bear warriors" mentioned by Tsao comprise reservists who will receive extra training, or if they are other civilians.

China-Taiwan tensions have soared since US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi visited the self-governing island in early August, despite Beijing's threats of military action. China's People's Liberation Army has so far responded to Pelosi's visit by carrying out live-fire drills in positions around Taiwan and sending ships and fighter jets into the areas around the island.

On Wednesday, Taiwan vowed to counterattack without exception should any of Beijing's forces crossed into the island's waters or airspace.

Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho gets philosophical in RANT to defend his managerial record https://briefnews.eu/man-utd-boss-jose-mourinho-gets-philosophical-in-rant-to-defend-his-managerial-record/ https://briefnews.eu/man-utd-boss-jose-mourinho-gets-philosophical-in-rant-to-defend-his-managerial-record/#respond Sat, 01 Sep 2018 00:25:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/man-utd-boss-jose-mourinho-gets-philosophical-in-rant-to-defend-his-managerial-record/

Rather than address the team’s many problems, once again launched a passionate defence of his managerial record ahead of Sunday’s vital game at Burnley where will be seeking to avoid a third successive defeat.

The self-proclaimed Special One claimed he is still “one of the greatest managers in the world” and pointed – once again – to the eight League titles he has won in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain.

But when asked if he could still consider himself one of the greatest if he failed to deliver the Premier League championship to Old Trafford, he quoted the 18th century German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel to argue that a career should be judged over its length rather than just three games, and emphasise his irritation at the plaudits Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino got for finishing behind United last season.

It didn’t rival Eric Cantona’s famous “seagulls and trawlers” line, but Mourinho’s response was: “Of course I will. Did you read any philosophers? Did you never spend time reading for example, Hegel? Okay, so, just as an example Hegel says, ‘the truth is in the whole. It’s always in the whole that you find the truth’.

“Do you ask that question to the manager [Mauricio Pochettino] that finished third in the Premier League last season? To the manager [Jurgen Klopp] that finished fourth? To the manager [Antonio Conte] that finished fifth?

“Because he [Klopp] never won anything in international [European] competition for example. That’s his problem.

“I’ll tell you what I think and how I feel. I analyse my performance myself and for me it is more important what I think than what you think.”

Mourinho then reiterated his view that guiding Untied to second place behind runaway champions Manchester City last season was one of his greatest achievements, despite the 19-point gap.

“I had great success last season,” he added. “That’s probably not what you want to admit and you do what you want.

“I have won eight League titles in my career and I am the only manager in the world who has won in Italy, Spain and England – not small titles, not small countries, eight proper titles. But my second position last season is one of my greatest achievements in football.

“Two seasons ago we had a fantastic season by winning the Europa League and last season everybody thought Atletico Madrid did amazing, because they won the Europa League after being knocked out of the Champions League. We won the Europa League, because that was our level, and we are the last team in England to win a European competition.”

United fans are only interested in the here and now however. And if his team lose again on Sunday Mourinho’s hopes of adding to those eight League titles will look pretty slim and the pressure will intensify.

Support came from the manager who will be trying to pile on the agony on Sunday, Sean Dyche, as well as Pep Guardiola, whose success at City is intensifying the scrutiny on the problems at Old Trafford.

Dyche – dubbed the “Ginger Mourinho” by Clarets fans – said: “My respect for people like Jose is because I’m a young manager, learning the game, and these people have done enormous things.

“In this game you get questioned for what you’re doing now. People forget your history and what you’ve done. He has done massive things for the game, for his clubs and for himself.

“You’ve got to have a bit more respect when they’ve done what they’ve done in the game. I’m certainly not going to question his conduct because he knows what he’s doing.”

Guardiola put his past hostility with Mourinho to one side to say: “Of course we are judged on the titles we get, especially because if you won titles, you have worked.

“But I don’t judge the managers only on that. I judge on the CV, the history, the way Jose did it in all the places he was – it’s hat’s off to him. There is no doubts about his quality.”

AFL, Suns to defend racism claim https://briefnews.eu/afl-suns-to-defend-racism-claim/ https://briefnews.eu/afl-suns-to-defend-racism-claim/#respond Wed, 09 May 2018 18:39:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/afl-suns-to-defend-racism-claim/ THE AFL and Gold Coast are prepared to defend themselves in the Human Rights Commission against allegations by former Suns player Joel Wilkinson that he was the victim of years of racial abuse and sexual harassment.

The league has recently admitted to reaching an out-of-court settlement with a former employee of the Fremantle football club who made allegations of misconduct against a senior staffer, reported to be coach Ross Lyon.

But in the Wilkinson case, months of legal talks with the AFL failed to deliver an outcome.

FORMER SUN: AFL PLAYER CLAIMS ‘RACIAL ABUSE, SEXUAL TAUNTING’

Wilkinson is now preparing for a racial vilification and sexual harassment case against the AFL, clubs, coaches and players in the Human Rights Commission.

He is seeking compensation for loss of past and future wages as well as compensation for pain, suffering and humiliation.

He has engaged Shine Lawyers and American lawyer Mika Hilaire who are set to begin proceedings on Monday.

Wilkinson, who is of Nigerian descent, endured a torrid start to his career when he was racially abused by opposition player Justin Sherman from the Western Bulldogs in his debut game for the Suns in Round 14, 2011.

Sherman was suspended for four matches and ordered by the Bulldogs to pay $ 5000 to a charity and undertake work in the club’s multicultural programs.

The following season he was again vilified by a Collingwood supporter during a game at the MCG.

Pies star Dale Thomas was praised for reporting the incident immediately after the match.

The Suns issued an official complaint with the AFL.

Wilkinson was delisted by the Suns at the end of 2013 after playing 26 games over three seasons.

In 2014 Wilkinson fronted an AFL Media video called Making a Stand where he spoke out against racism in football and praised the league for the work it was doing on the issue.

However, he now believes his career was cut short because he spoke up about racism against him and because of his association with other players who were also subject to racial discrimination.

His lawyer said he had been silenced by the AFL.

The AFL would not comment on Wednesday night but issued a statement.

“We are sorry that Mr. Wilkinson suffered experiences of racial abuse during his time as an AFL footballer,’’ it said.

“He has previously shared his experience of racial abuse, helping educate the community via a series of social awareness videos produced with the AFL.

“We respect a person’s right to pursue claims through the legal system. We will continue to work with Joel to seek to resolve this matter.”

Gold Coast also said in a statement “we are treating the matter seriously and will participate in any process as appropriate and required”.

Wilkinson had undeniable athletic ability.

He was captain of the Queensland under-18s side in 2010 and was drafted by the Suns as a zone selection in 2011.

During his time at the club he held records for the bench press and 2km time trial.

After he was delisted, he was signed by the Northern Blues in the VFL but retired the following year to pursue a career in the NFL.

He spent time on the roster at the Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants but did not make a senior NFL appearance.

Erica Wiebe goes around the world and back to defend her Commonwealth gold https://briefnews.eu/erica-wiebe-goes-around-the-world-and-back-to-defend-her-commonwealth-gold/ https://briefnews.eu/erica-wiebe-goes-around-the-world-and-back-to-defend-her-commonwealth-gold/#respond Thu, 12 Apr 2018 18:19:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/erica-wiebe-goes-around-the-world-and-back-to-defend-her-commonwealth-gold/ GOLD COAST, Australia — Erica Wiebe’s to-do list here was short, but ambitious.

“My goal was to pet a koala, get a tan and get a gold medal.”

The Canadian freestyle wrestling superstar quickly took care of the first two items at the Commonwealth Games athletes’ village.

Wiebe completed the third on the mat Thursday at the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre — with authority.

The Stittsville, Ont., native began her Commonwealth title defence in the women’s 76-kilogram category with a speedy victory, pinning Hajaratu Kamara of Sierra Leone a little more than a minute into their quarter-final match.

Next up was a semifinal against England’s Georgina Nelthorpe, who the Canadian handled in a time not much longer than her first match, via technical superiority, by a score of 11-0.

The final saw Wiebe give up her first and only points of the tourney before she pinned Blessing Onyebuchi of Nigeria to claim gold and repeat as Commonwealth champion.

Olympic and Commonwealth Games champion Erica Wiebe was one of 4 Canadian medal winners on the wrestling mat during day 8 of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.1:45

The last time she won this title, in 2014 in Glasgow, Wiebe spun it into Olympic gold two years later. That’s the aim once again for Wiebe, who says she takes a lot of confidence from her Commonwealth Games victories.

“In 2014 when I came here it was really my first big multi-sport Games, my first big event — bright lights in a big stadium,” she says. “Competing on a big major stage like that gave me the confidence and experience that when it came time for the finals in Rio, I knew what to expect, I knew what I was capable of and had confidence in myself.”

The Olympic champion wrestler is competing for Canada in Gold Coast, Australia.3:28

To say it’s been a busy few years for Wiebe would be an understatement of global proportions.

After winning Olympic gold in Rio in 2016, the Canadian has been on a whirlwind tour, the latest stop of which has her in Australia to defend her Commonwealth Games title.

So, in a way, the 28-year-old is back where her wild ride began.

“It’s so crazy being back here four years later,” she says. “Everything has changed, but in some ways it’s still a wrestling match and anything can happen. I still love this sport, I’m still growing and learning so much. I just hope to be there for the ride and be there in Tokyo.”

Wiebe’s road to Rio went through Glasgow, but she got to the Gold Coast via… well, let’s just say her passport is full of stamps.

“I always have a lot going on in my life, she says. “I’ve always loved having balance with my personal goals, academic goals and having sport goals. After Rio, it got super crazy.

“I love adventures, so I went on quite the adventure.”

WWE comes calling

Her Olympic success landed her a huge gig in the India’s Pro Wrestling League, where she was team captain of the Mumbai Maharathi. Wiebe’s participation fee was 4.3 million Indian rupees, which equates to more than $ 80,000 Canadian, making her one of the highest-paid wrestlers out of many world-class women and men.

Wrestling-related adventures have also had Wiebe globe-hopping to Sweden, Ukraine, Iceland and across Canada. She also received an invite from WWE.

The sports-entertainment behemoth offered Wiebe a chance to visit and watch the Mae Young Classic finale in Las Vegas, with a follow up-stop at the WWE’s Performance Center in Orlando, Fla.

Becoming an Olympic champion also means increased demands on her time. However, if her results here in the Gold Coast are any indication, she’s well equipped to deal with the growing attention and has found her balance.

“I took a look at what I wanted to accomplish in Tokyo in 2020, so I’m really focused on what I want my schedule to look like,” Wiebe says. “I’m actually working in a flexible work role at Deloitte in Calgary, so that’s keeping me focused and grounded. It gives me so much balance outside of the wrestling world [and] the padded wrestling room that we train in every single day.

“I’m really intentional about what I do every day.”

Special relationship

Helping to keep her on track is coach Paul Ragusa, himself a silver medallist in wrestling at the 1994 Commonwealth Games. He says Wiebe’s work ethic is second to none, and it’s helped her cope with being a hot commodity.

“She’s a Commonwealth Games champion and an Olympic champion. There’s a lot of expectations on her,” he says. “She always feels a lot of pressure but she’s managing it well.

“She’s a great champion and a great role model. She’s someone you can really get behind because she works so hard.”

The relationship with her coach is a special, and emotional, one for Wiebe.

“In [Glasgow] we won that gold medal together and he started really focusing on me and being that mentor for me. He pushes me and challenges me. He’s the best technical coach in the world and I know that he supports me, no matter what,” Wiebe says, tears running down her cheek.

Now that she’s taken care of her three goals here in Australia, Wiebe will stick around to cheer on her teammates who are looking to check off their own podium finishes. Her gold was one of four medals won by Canadians on the night, with Diana Weickel, Steven Takahashi and Jevon Balfour also hitting the podium.

“I love the Wrestling Canada team. I think we’re going to have a really strong performance,” Wiebe says. “Tonight was just the beginning.”

Lewis Hamilton forced to defend himself after ANOTHER controversial Instagram post https://briefnews.eu/lewis-hamilton-forced-to-defend-himself-after-another-controversial-instagram-post/ https://briefnews.eu/lewis-hamilton-forced-to-defend-himself-after-another-controversial-instagram-post/#respond Mon, 09 Apr 2018 20:41:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lewis-hamilton-forced-to-defend-himself-after-another-controversial-instagram-post/

The Brit deleted his Instagram account in December after captioning a video of his little nephew with “boys don’t wear princess dresses”.

The Formula One star has since returned to social media and has been very active, which pleases his loyal supporters.

But now the four-time world champion has been shrewd in controversy once again after he wrote “thank you, Jesus” on a post which confirmed grid girls were remaining at two circuits this season.

F1 owner Liberty Media banned grid girls for the 2018 campaign but promoters for the Monaco and Russian Grand Prixs have announced that they will remain at their events.

Hamilton posted the cheeky message that he was glad the girls remained in the sport.

But he has since been forced to defend his action.

“It was just a joke,” he said.

“I saw this publication about beautiful girls coming back and said, ‘Thank you Jesus’.

“But honestly it doesn’t interest me.”

Hamilton has made a disappointing start to the 2018 season as Sebastian Vettel claimed wins in the first two races.

The Brit finished second in Australian and third in Bahrain at the weekend.

  • President Donald Trump has been rejected by another set of attorneys he reached out to about joining his legal-defense team in the Russia investigation.
  • The lawyers, Tom Buchanan and Dan Webb, said “business conflicts” will prevent them from representing the president, multiple news outlets reported on Monday night.
  • One lawyer that Trump lined up last week has had to back out as well, citing similar reasons. Trump lost John Dowd, the top attorney on his Russia investigation team, last week.

President Donald Trump has reportedly been turned down by a new set of attorneys as he seeks to bolster his legal-defense team in the Russia investigation.

The lawyers, Tom Buchanan and Dan Webb, of the law firm Winston & Strawn declined Trump’s invitation, citing “business conflicts,” multiple news outlets reported on Monday night.

Piers Morgan addresses Dan Walker DEFEAT as ITV defend their loss: 'Right' https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-addresses-dan-walker-defeat-as-itv-defend-their-loss-right/ https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-addresses-dan-walker-defeat-as-itv-defend-their-loss-right/#respond Sat, 24 Mar 2018 00:14:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-addresses-dan-walker-defeat-as-itv-defend-their-loss-right/

Tonight’s charity telethon aired a dramatic rowing race between the BBC and ITV, all in the name of Sport Relief.

Charlotte Hawkins represented Good Morning Britain and has been encouraged to win by Piers Morgan for weeks.

However, when it came down to the race, it seemed there was drama ahead.

As both teams set off, it seemed the BBC had the edge.

And when they got further down the Manchester river, ITV were out of the race.

BBC Breakfast’s Dan and his comrades sailed over the line well ahead of their rivals.

Immediately, viewers demanded to know what Piers would make of the defeat.

Although keeping quiet for a few hours, the outspoken presenter couldn’t help himself and answered a tweet.

Charlotte tried to explain Piers would forget about the loss as he is off Good Morning Britain next week.

However, the host responded chillingly: “Right.”

Not one to let bygones be bygones, it seems fans of Good Morning Britain can expect fireworks when he returns.

This comes as Charlotte worried whether she could go back to work following a loss.

She exclusively told Express.co.uk earlier this week that the “pressure was on”.

Charlotte, 42, confessed: “If I lose, I’m not sure I can go back into work. Piers Morgan would be absolutely furious if I lose this one. So the pressure is definitely on.

“It’s definitely given it an edge because Piers Morgan has said doesn’t come back to the studio if you lose so there’s nothing like getting a pep talk from one of your colleagues is there?

“But he’s made it quite clear that ITV have to win at all costs, so that’s definitely gave me the influence to put the effort in and shall we say there is some friendly rivalry between Dan and myself, we will have to wait and see what happens.”

Meanwhile, Dan posted to his 501,000 followers: “Thanks to all your @sportrelief support and well done #TeamBBC for beating the lovely guys from ITV.”

The biggest lobby groups representing broadband providers will help the Federal Communications Commission defend the repeal of net neutrality rules in court.

Yesterday, three trade groups that collectively represent every major home Internet and mobile broadband provider in the US filed motions to intervene in the case on behalf of the FCC. The motions for leave to intervene were filed by NCTA–The Internet & Television Association, CTIA–The Wireless Association, and USTelecom–The Broadband Association. (Yes, those are the organizations’ correct names.)

NCTA represents cable companies such as Comcast, Charter, Cox, and Altice. CTIA represents the biggest mobile carriers, such as AT&T, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, and Sprint. USTelecom represents wireline telcos with copper and fiber networks, such as AT&T and Verizon. All three groups also represent a range of smaller ISPs.

Twelve lawsuits filed against the Federal Communications Commission over its net neutrality repeal have been consolidated into one suit that will be heard at a federal appeals court in California.

The 12 lawsuits were filed by more than three dozen entities, including state attorneys general, consumer advocacy groups, and tech companies.

Here’s a list of who filed the 12 lawsuits against the FCC:
