“We will look at all suspect cases,” he assured.

The condition, a type of agenesis, is where the upper limbs of a fetus fail to form correctly during pregnancy. Those affected can be born with missing upper limbs, forearms, hands, or fingers. 

An initial inquiry into rural clusters of babies being born with such defects between 2009 and 2014, concluded in October and said that the cases were not significantly higher than the national average and without a common cause. 

However, confidence that the French authorities had a handle on the crisis took another blow on Monday night, after 11 fresh cases of babies born with arm defects were reported to have occured between 2000 and 2014, this time in the eastern region of Ain, near the Swiss border. 

Seven of the babies in Ain had all been born within 17 km of the village of Druillat during the time period.

Two other areas had been previously identified as having statistically “excessive” defects in clusters in north-west France, with four cases in Brittany and a further three in nearby Loire-Atlantique.

Vowing to get to the bottom of the mystery, French Health Minister Agnes Buzyn said on Tuesday that no cause was being ruled out. 

“It’s maybe something environmental, it’s maybe what [pregnant mothers] ate, it’s perhaps what they breathed in,” she said.

Remera, a public body that looks at malformation, carried out its own investigation in the Ain area. While no exact cause has been found, the body believes the answer “revolves around agriculture,” meaning pesticides. 

While no environmental or pharmaceutical cause has yet been linked to the French defects, the scare bears similarities to the Thalidomide scandal.

Marketed in the 1950s and 60s to alleviate morning sickness, the drug’s link to fetal limb malformation only became known after years of marketing and use.

eBay is the world’s biggest online auction site, attracting thousands and thousands of buyers and sellers.

Amongst those are keen coin collectors, who are willing to splash out for seemingly small change.

One coin hoping to attract one of these collectors is a “rare” £1 coin with a significant minting error.

The coin was listed this afternoon by eBay user “robimora-1”, who is based in Wadebridge.

The seller also boats 100 per cent positive feedback, enhancing the reliability of the listing.

Robimora-1 listed the coin as a “Rare deformed pound coin offset print”.

Not elaborating much more in the description, the seller added: “Rare miss print New £1 coin” (sic).

The coin is a 2016 £1 coin, and appears to have a skew print and unusual marks on the outer rim.

Listed for a whopping £500, the seller is also open to having lower offers made on the coin.

The 12-sided £1 coin was minted in 2016, and designed to combat fraud due to two different coloured metals and a hologram underneath the Queen’s effigy.

According the the Royal Mint, many of the old one-colour £1 coins are fake.

The new £1 coin was designed by David Pearce, and features rose, leek, thistle and shamrock encircled by a coronet.

Half a billion of the new £1 coins were minted in 2016, with production rates increased.

The faster rate of production and amount of coins being minted led to mistakes being made in minting.

Many coins were misprinted or featured minting defects, often selling for sky-high prices on eBay.

Earlier this month another rare £1 coin with a minting error was sold for £200 on eBay.

The coin was listed as a “£1 very rare 2017 circulated £1 one pound coin mint error missprint miss strike” [sic].

The description simple read: “Very rare 2017 error £1. Leaked egg.”

A newly minted 2017 £1, the coin had the centre silver circle leaking into the outer gold rim.

The silver had leaked out from its perimeters, causing some of the outer engraving to be printed in silver.

Chips built with extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light are plagued with random defects with no obvious solution, according to research presented at a chipmakers’ conference reported in EETimes. The EUV hardware seems to work acceptably for 20nm or larger processes, but below this scale, small defects are cropping up that ruin the chip and prove hard to detect.

Photolithography is the process used to etch the patterns that make up chips into a silicon wafer. The wafer is coated with a light-sensitive material called photoresist. This wafer is then exposed to bright light that’s shone through a mask. Areas hidden by the mask will retain their photoresist layer; those exposed directly to the UV will lose it. The wafer is then etched using plasma or acid. Parts of the wafer that are still covered in photoresist are protected during the etching, retaining their silicon oxide; those whose photoresist has been removed are etched away.

Smaller wavelengths of light enable finer detail in the mask and hence finer detail in the etching. Processors today, built on a 14nm process, already use features that are far smaller than the wavelength of regular UV light; they apply techniques such as multi-patterning (in which multiple masks and light exposure stages are used) to reach ever smaller sizes. These additional steps increase manufacturing time and error rates, hence the interest in shorter wavelengths. With EUV, smaller chip features could be produced without needing such techniques.

More than 120 babies have been born with serious birth defects caused by the Zika virus in US territories, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday.

Scientists reviewed 2,549 women who were possibly infected with Zika who had completed pregnancies; 2,464 resulted in live births while the others resulted in miscarriage, stillbirth or abortion.

Of the total number of pregnancies, 1,508, or about 60 percent, had confirmed Zika infection.

Among the women with confirmed Zika infection during the first trimester, 8 percent had a baby or fetus with Zika-associated birth defects. Of pregnancies affected in the second trimester, 5 percent resulted in birth defects and 4 percent were affected in the third trimester.

The findings, published in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, reviewed cases from American Samoa, Puerto Rico, Micronesia, the Marshall Islands and the US Virgin Islands, from Jan. 1, 2016, to April 25, 2017.

“As these latest findings illustrate, Zika virus poses a serious threat to pregnant women and their babies, regardless of when the infection occurs during the pregnancy,” said Dr. Anne Schuchat, acting director for the CDC. “Women in the US territories and elsewhere who have continued exposure to mosquitoes carrying Zika are at risk of infection. We must remain vigilant and committed to preventing new Zika infections.”

The findings were similar to another report that reviewed cases of pregnant women in US states and the District of Columbia. Puerto Rico was hit particularly hard by the Zika virus, and health officials announced earlier this week that the outbreak had ended.

Scientists have concluded that the Zika virus, which is spread through the Aedes aegypti mosquito and also through sexual contact, can result in microcephaly, a devastating birth defect in which a baby is born with an abnormally small head, possible joint problems and brain damage that can affect hearing and vision. The CDC has advised doctors to monitor babies who have been born after their mother was infected with Zika, as some of the symptoms may not appear until months later.

According to the CDC report, 59 percent of babies were tested for Zika virus infection at birth. Of all live births, 52 percent received CDC-recommended imaging tests and 79 percent received a hearing screening.

A disappearing message app called Confide fails to actually provide the privacy safeguards it promises—such as a protection against screenshots—according to a federal lawsuit filed on Thursday in New York.

Confide, which launched in 2013, enjoyed a recent burst of popularity amid numerous reports that Republicans and Trump Administration staff were using the app to communicate in secret—and to shares leaks with the media.

The Confide app has long been controversial among security experts who have expressed skepticism about its claims of “military-grade encryption.” But the allegations in the lawsuit appear to be even more serious, claiming the app fails to deliver on a number of its advertised privacy features.

Specifically, it claims Confide fails to warn users when the person they are communicating with takes a screenshot. It adds that in the case of Windows desktop users, message recipients can easily take a screenshot of the message, including the sender’s name.

“Confide fails to deliver on two of the three requirements that it espouses as necessary for confidential communications: ephemerality and screenshot protection. Absent these protections, Confide knows that it cannot deliver on its promise to consumers that communications sent through it will be confidential,” the complaint states.

If the claims are true, it would appear to contradict Confide’s claim that its technology prevents such tactics.

The person who filed the lawsuit is a Michigan man named Jeremy Auman, who claims Confide’s advertised privacy features led him to pay $ 6.99 in January for a monthly subscription. Now, he is seeking to represent every other paid Confide subscriber in the U.S. in a class action suit, citing violations of laws against false advertising and deceptive practices. The suit does not name a specific amount of damages.

“Individuals ranging from an average consumer all the way up to government officials at the highest level have realized the importance of secure communications. And as such, that range of people put their trust in the representations made by Confide to protect their private correspondence. Our suit seeks to hold Confide accountable to the level of security it promised,” said lawyer Chris Dore, a partner at Edelson PC, which filed the lawsuit.

Confide CEO Jon Brod told Fortune the company would fight the lawsuit.

“Not surprisingly, the accusations set forth in the complaint are unfounded and without merit. We look forward to responding to this frivolous complaint and seeing this case swiftly thrown out of court,” said Brod.

The lawsuit also alleges that another aspect of the Confide app—known as the “sliver” feature—does not work. As Confide describes it, the sliver feature only reveals a little bit of text at a time, and obscures the sender’s name.

The point of the feature is to ensure a message recipient can’t use a camera to create a record of an entire message or otherwise identify its sender. But the “sliver” feature doesn’t work, according to the lawsuit, which includes a series of images purporting to show screenshots and photos of entire messages:

“Likewise, Confide did not design its macOS or Windows desktop Apps with the “sliver” feature enabled (i.e., to reveal only a “sliver” of the text as represented). Nor did Confide design its desktop Apps to ever hide the name of the sending party. As Figure 4 shows (through a photograph taken with a camera), Confide did not program either version of the desktop app to hide the sender’s name or to otherwise obscure the content of the messages. Confide’s design failure allows for a recipient to use a camera to capture the full content of each message as well as the identity of the sending party.”
