In less than two years, anything that can connect to the internet will come with a unique password — that is, if it’s produced or sold in California. The “Information Privacy: Connected Devices” bill that comes into effect on January 1, 2020, effectively bans pre-installed and hard-coded default passwords. It only took the authorities about two weeks to approve the proposal made by the state senate.

The new regulation mandates device manufacturers to either create a unique password for each device at the time of production or require the user to create one when they interact with the device for the first time. According to the bill, it applies to any connected device, which is defined as a “physical object that is capable of connecting to the Internet, directly or indirectly, and that is assigned an Internet Protocol address or Bluetooth address.”

The law is clearly aimed at stopping the spread of botnets made up of compromised network devices, such as routers, smart switches or even security cameras and other IoT equipment. Malicious software could often take control of them by trying easy-to-guess or publicly disclosed default login credentials. It’s not entirely clear yet as to how the new regulation will affect legacy industry hardware from the 1980s and 1990s where passwords are either hard-coded or next to impossible to change.

A bondholder finds a sneaky way to trigger insurance against default https://briefnews.eu/a-bondholder-finds-a-sneaky-way-to-trigger-insurance-against-default/ https://briefnews.eu/a-bondholder-finds-a-sneaky-way-to-trigger-insurance-against-default/#respond Fri, 04 May 2018 14:43:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-bondholder-finds-a-sneaky-way-to-trigger-insurance-against-default/

IN 2013 Codere, a Spanish gaming firm, owed money it could not repay. Its bonds were trading at just over half face value. Blackstone, a private-equity firm, offered it a cheap $ 100m loan. But there was a catch. Blackstone had bought credit derivatives on Codere’s debt that would pay out about €14m ($ 19m) if Codere missed a bond payment. So Codere delayed a payment by a couple of days to prompt a “technical default”. Blackstone got its payout; Codere got its loan and stayed afloat.

On the satirical “Daily Show”, Jon Stewart, the then host, likened the scheme to the insurance fraud in “Goodfellas”, in which mobsters insure a restaurant before blowing it up. But that missed an important point. Blackstone did not blow Codere up—quite the opposite. As it said at the time, it “provided capital when no one else would, which allowed the company to live and fight another day”. The investors who sold Blackstone credit-derivative contracts had in effect bet that Codere would not go bankrupt….

Vivaldi, the desktop browser app that was launched in 2016 by Opera cofounder Jon von Tetzchner, has introduced a small but interesting new feature today. As most other browsers do, Vivaldi offers a private browsing mode that offers a degree of privacy insofar as it doesn’t record the sites you visit or store cookies and temporary files. Countries rarely default on their debts https://briefnews.eu/countries-rarely-default-on-their-debts/ https://briefnews.eu/countries-rarely-default-on-their-debts/#respond Wed, 20 Dec 2017 02:47:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/countries-rarely-default-on-their-debts/

VENEZUELA is an unusual country. It is home to the world’s largest reserves of oil and its highest rate of inflation. It is known for its unusual number of beauty queens and its frightening rate of murders. Its bitterest foe, America, is also its biggest customer, buying a third of its exports.

In defaulting on its sovereign bonds last month (it failed to pay interest on two dollar-denominated bonds by the end of a grace period on November 13th), Venezuela is also increasingly unusual. The number of governments in default to private creditors fell last year to its lowest level since 1977, according to the Bank of Canada’s database. Of the 131 sovereigns tracked by S&P Global, a rating agency, Mozambique is the only other country in default, having missed payments on its Eurobond (and failed to make good on guaranteed loans to two state-owned enterprises). Walter Wriston, a former chairman of Citibank, earned ridicule for once declaring that “countries don’t go bust”. But they don’t much…

A full-scale Venezuelan default could push up oil prices https://briefnews.eu/a-full-scale-venezuelan-default-could-push-up-oil-prices/ https://briefnews.eu/a-full-scale-venezuelan-default-could-push-up-oil-prices/#respond Fri, 08 Dec 2017 03:18:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-full-scale-venezuelan-default-could-push-up-oil-prices/

Who believes in Nicolás?

ON NOVEMBER 30th, as oil tsars from the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and Russia met in Vienna, Venezuela’s former oil minister, Eulogio del Pino, once one of their number, was seized by armed guards at dawn in Caracas, and taken to jail. His arrest was not publicly acknowledged in Vienna. His replacement, Manuel Quevedo, a general in the national guard, attended OPEC and was received with the usual deference.

Also unmentioned was how Venezuela, embroiled in a massive, messy debt default, is doing plenty of OPEC’s dirty work. Since November 2016, when OPEC first agreed with Russia to cut output to push up oil prices, Venezuela’s has fallen by 203,000 barrels a day (b/d), to 1.86m b/d in October. That is more than twice the cut it agreed with OPEC of 95,000 b/d.

If its production continues to fall—some analysts say it could be down to 1.6m b/d in 2018—it could either drive up…

  • President Nicolas Maduro announced Venezuela will look to restructure its US$ 89 billion worth of debt to be able to continue servicing it.
  • Forecasts about what will happen next are all pessimistic.
  • By the end of next year, the government and state-owned PDVSA must repay debt obligations to the tune of $ 13 billion, and foreign currency reserves are less than that already, at $ 10 billion.
  • Plus, Venezuela is subject to economic sanctions from the United States, which prohibit any U.S. entities from taking part in any business dealings with Venezuela, including debt restructuring.

Bondholders, creditors, and any company with operations in Venezuela are all agog for news from Caracas after President Nicolas Maduro announced Venezuela will look to restructure its US$ 89 billion worth of debt to be able to continue servicing it.

Forecasts about what will happen next are all pessimistic, and that’s no wonder. By the end of next year, the government and state-owned PDVSA must repay debt obligations to the tune of US$ 13 billion, and foreign currency reserves are less than that already, at US$ 10 billion. What’s more, the country is subject to economic sanctions from the United States, which prohibit any U.S. entities from taking part in any business dealings with Venezuela, including debt restructuring.

It is these sanctions that many analysts view as the main reason for an unavoidable default. As Bloomberg author Katia Porzecanski wrote in a recent overview of the Venezuela situation, lack of access to U.S.-based banks and investment companies will make the debt restructuring initiative very difficult if not impossible, as debt restructuring almost invariably involves new debt issuance.

Some observers believe a default might be the lesser evil for Venezuela: imports are at multi-year lows and the population is suffering from shortages in basic goods including food and medicine. The government could stop servicing its debt and use what money remains in the state coffers to tackle the shortages.

A default, however, is in nobody’s favor, which makes the situation extremely complicated. Bondholders are just fine with payments coming in, even if they are late, as the bonds carry a quite attractive coupon. What they are not fine with is the possibility of a default followed by fights about the order of repayment of the various debts.

Another thing bondholders and creditors are not fine with are statements from opposition leaders that if there’s a regime change in Caracas, they will stop servicing certain debts—debts that include a PDVSA bond purchased by Goldman Sachs, which, the opposition claims, covertly supported the Maduro government. The bank could suffer a paper loss of several million dollars on this bond if Venezuela defaults.

The Venezuelan government is certainly not fine with a default regardless of the arguments for it, which boil down to boosting much needed imports. If Caracas defaults, it will lose a lot of internationally located assets, most of them related to the oil industry, which supplies almost all of Venezuela’s export revenue.

Citgo will have to go. Refineries and oil cargoes, too. Some analysts, like Katia Porzecanski, even argue that if Venezuela defaults and creditors get their hands on its oil assets, buyers of its oil will start looking for other suppliers. Others, such as FT’s John Paul Rathbone, note that even if it stops servicing its debt, Venezuela will not gain anything, as any savings would be offset from lower oil revenues following the seizure of foreign oil assets.

It seems the corner is very tight for Venezuela. It has a strong backing from Russia and China, but it’s doubtful how ready these two would be to take on a lot of new debt as part of its restructuring. There aren’t a lot of options for Venezuela, but it seems bent on continuing with its debt payments whatever the cost.

Microsoft’s new version of Windows 10 doesn’t let you make Google your default search engine https://briefnews.eu/microsofts-new-version-of-windows-10-doesnt-let-you-make-google-your-default-search-engine/ https://briefnews.eu/microsofts-new-version-of-windows-10-doesnt-let-you-make-google-your-default-search-engine/#respond Wed, 03 May 2017 05:11:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/microsofts-new-version-of-windows-10-doesnt-let-you-make-google-your-default-search-engine/ microsoft surface laptopMicrosoft

Microsoft’s lightweight version of Windows 10 is a bit more locked down than first anticipated.

In an FAQ page for Windows 10 S, as the just-announced variant is called, Microsoft notes that its Edge web browser will be the default in the new operating system.

That much was known already, as the main thing that makes Windows 10 S “lightweight” is the fact that it only runs apps from Windows’ app store. Right now, no other major browser is in that app store to begin with.

What wasn’t specified before, though, was the fact that neither Edge nor Internet Explorer (Microsoft’s older browser) will let you change the default search engine in Windows 10 S. As LaptopMag notes, that means you’ll be sent to Microsoft’s Bing engine whenever you search from the address bar, with no way of switching to Google, DuckDuckGo, or another competitor without going to their respective websites.

Microsoft Surface EventMicrosoftWith regular Windows 10, you can dig through a few settings menus in Edge and change the default engine from Bing to your preference.

Beyond that, the FAQ page notes that even if you are able to download another browser from the Windows app store, Edge “will remain the default if, for example, you open an .htm file.” In other words, when you open a link from an email, chat app, and what have you on a Windows 10 S machine, that link will open in Edge every time.

Microsoft likely has its reasons for this — the big ideas it’s selling with Windows 10 S are security and simplicity, with a particular focus on schools. The easiest way to create that, in its eyes, is to put the services it can directly control at the forefront of the OS as much as possible. Getting more people to use its stuff probably doesn’t hurt, either.

But from a consumer standpoint, this kind of closedness is a ways away from the flexibility of standard Windows 10. Bing, while generally fine, has long been less popular than Google Search, even as it’s become more tightly integrated with Windows 10.

microsoft surface laptopJeff Dunn/Business InsiderIt’s worth noting that Microsoft has tried pushing people toward Bing before. Back in 2014 it launched a “Windows 8.1 with Bing” edition of its OS that was aimed at lower-cost hardware, much like Windows 10 S today. It required Microsoft’s device partners to make Bing the default search engine, too, though it gave consumers the ability to opt out if they wanted.

Theoretically, there isn’t much stopping a Google or Mozilla from bringing their web browsers to the Windows app store. And if you really wanted to avoid Bing, you can always make a shortcut to Google Search or whatever else.

Plus, this kind of policy isn’t totally unprecented: Google locks Chrome as the default browser on its Chrome OS (but does let you change default search engines), while Apple does the same with Safari on iOS.

But those interested in Microsoft’s flashy new Surface Laptop may want to keep in mind that Windows 10 S really wants you to use Microsoft things, and that it’s aimed at schools much more than professionals and heavier PC users. It’s more like Chrome OS, just with Microsoft in Google’s place.

It’s also worth remembering that schools can upgrade a Windows 10 S machine to full Windows 10 Pro for free. Surface Laptop buyers can do the same until the end of the year — though it may make the hardware a bit less efficient than it’d be otherwise. For every other case, that upgrade fee will be $ 49.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
