Google subsidiary DeepMind announced today that it’s working with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to use machine learning in an attempt to predict when patients will deteriorate during a hospital stay.

Deterioration (when patients get worse under hospital care) is a significant issue, since care providers can miss warning signs for potentially lethal conditions that arise as part of other treatment. DeepMind and the VA aim to tackle Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), which — as the name implies — occurs when a person’s kidneys temporarily stop working as well as they should. That can mean full-on kidney failure, or just injury that reduces their function. It can kill people if untreated.

DeepMind’s goal is to improve algorithms used to detect AKI so that doctors and nurses can spot it quicker and treat patients faster. Dominic King, the clinical lead for DeepMind Health, said in a blog post that the two organizations are already familiar with the condition, which is why they’re choosing to tackle it first.

The company will have access to more than 700,000 medical records that have had identifying personal details stripped out of them. Using those records, DeepMind and the VA aim to determine whether or not it’s possible to predict the onset of AKI and patient deterioration more broadly using machine learning.

That’s one of the key things to note about this move: it’s possible that our current crop of machine learning algorithms, the data available, and other factors may make this a task that can’t ultimately be solved through the application of AI. While DeepMind has seen a great deal of success in its past research endeavors

DeepMind is also treading on sensitive territory when working with health data. The company ran afoul of regulators last year, when the U.K.’s data protection watchdog said that a deal the company struck with that country’s National Health Service to access Britons’ anonymized health records failed to comply with the law.

The VA also had a run-in with data protection concerns. In 2016, the agency cancelled a deal with AI startup Flow Health, which was supposed to use veterans’ medical information to predict diseases. That was an abrupt end to what was meant to be a five year contract that empowered the startup to use veterans’ genetic data and medical records.

All of that said, applications of machine learning have shown early promise in the realm of medicine. For example, a Google Brain team showed off its use of computer vision to detect heart disease earlier this week. DeepMind’s work could help mitigate a major cause of hospital deaths. At this point, though, it’s time for the public to play the waiting game.

Google’s next DeepMind AI research lab opens in Canada https://briefnews.eu/googles-next-deepmind-ai-research-lab-opens-in-canada/ https://briefnews.eu/googles-next-deepmind-ai-research-lab-opens-in-canada/#respond Wed, 05 Jul 2017 23:50:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/googles-next-deepmind-ai-research-lab-opens-in-canada/

Google’s DeepMind artificial intelligence team has been based in the UK ever since it was acquired in 2014. However, it’s finally ready to branch out — just not to the US. DeepMind has announced that its first international research lab is coming to the Canadian prairie city of Edmonton, Alberta later in July. A trio of University of Alberta computer science professors (Richard Sutton, Michael Bowling and Patrick Pilarski) will lead the group, which includes seven more AI veterans. But why not an American outpost?

As Recode observes, you can chalk it up to a combination of familiarity and political considerations. There are about a dozen University of Alberta grads already working at DeepMind, and Sutton was the firm’s very first advisor. It only makes sense to set up shop where you already have close allies, especially when the school is at the forefront of AI research.

And simply speaking, the Canadian government is friendlier to AI research than the current American leadership. The country has been courting AI scientists with $ 125 million in funding (on top of existing provincial efforts) at the same time as the Trump administration is proposing major cuts to scientific research. If you were looking for financial support, where would you go? And it wouldn’t be surprising if Google’s opposition to the US travel ban plays a role. The company believes that the ban limits access to talent, and it won’t face that restriction in Canada.

We’d add that the country is no stranger to big companies establishing AI-related research labs. Uber just recently opened a self-driving car lab in Toronto, while Apple and BlackBerry both have autonomous driving facilities in Ottawa. This is really just the latest in a string of major AI coups for Canada — while there’s still plenty of active American research, it’s almost surprising when a tech giant doesn’t focus its attention north of the border.

NHS patient information illegally shared with Google DeepMind https://briefnews.eu/nhs-patient-information-illegally-shared-with-google-deepmind/ https://briefnews.eu/nhs-patient-information-illegally-shared-with-google-deepmind/#respond Mon, 03 Jul 2017 16:17:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nhs-patient-information-illegally-shared-with-google-deepmind/

Data belonging to 1.6 million patients was illegally shared with Google after a National Health Service (NHS) trust tested a medical app with the tech giant.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) ruled on Monday that the Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust had not complied with the Data Protection Act when it provided information to Google’s DeepMind program.

Artificial intelligence agency DeepMind was given the data in order to try out a smartphone application called Streams. The app was set to alert doctors about patients at risk of acute kidney injuries.

According to the ICO, “a number of shortcomings” were found in how the hospital handled data, including a failure to tell patients that their information could be used in tests.

“There’s no doubt the huge potential that creative use of data could have on patient care and clinical improvements, but the price of innovation does not need to be the erosion of fundamental privacy rights,” said Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham.

“Our investigation found a number of shortcomings in the way patient records were shared for this trial. Patients would not have reasonably expected their information to have been used in this way and the trust could and should have been far more transparent with patients as to what was happening.”

“The Data Protection Act is not a barrier to innovation but it does need to be considered wherever people’s data is being used,” the ICO said.

The hospital failed to offer an apology, but rushed to reassure its patients that the information shared “has been in our control at all times.”

DeepMind said in a statement: “Although today’s findings are about the Royal Free, we need to reflect on our own actions too.

“In our determination to achieve quick impact when this work started in 2015, we underestimated the complexity of the NHS and of the rules around patient data, as well as the potential fears about a well-known tech company working in health.”

Here’s this week’s newsletter:

VentureBeat today announced the launch of a personalized news bot for Facebook Messenger, which follows the release of our voicebot for Google Home. What sets the VB Messenger bot apart from other news bots are its built-in learning and intelligence.

The VB bot observes readers’ behavior and continuously updates their profiles based on their interests in order to deliver personalized news feeds. Over time, as a reader’s profile evolves, the bot will learn about their new interests and unlearn the old ones. We partnered with Gupshup to build the VB bot. (Notably, CEO and cofounder Beerud Sheth’s graduate research at M.I.T. Media Lab involved the development of autonomous agents for personalized news filtering.)

Samsung’s intelligent agent also made news this week. Bixby, its long-awaited competitor to Siri, will not be included with the new Samsung 8 phone shipping later this month. The company also revealed it was creating a $ 150 million fund to invest in startups around virtual reality, AI, Internet of Things, and other so-called frontier technologies.

Also happening this month will be a five-day festival from Alphabet’s DeepMind, taking place in Wuzhen, China. The event will pair some of China’s top Go players with DeepMind’s AI-powered program, AlphaGo. Last year, AlphaGo beat a top, professional South Korean Go player. And earlier this year, Google confirmed that AlphaGo had beaten other top players online, too.

Google’s DeepMind made ‘inexcusable’ errors handling UK health data, says report https://briefnews.eu/googles-deepmind-made-inexcusable-errors-handling-uk-health-data-says-report/ https://briefnews.eu/googles-deepmind-made-inexcusable-errors-handling-uk-health-data-says-report/#respond Thu, 16 Mar 2017 11:03:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/googles-deepmind-made-inexcusable-errors-handling-uk-health-data-says-report/

A new academic report examining a deal between Google’s AI subsidiary DeepMind and the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) has said that the US tech giant made “inexcusable” errors in terms of transparency and oversight when handling sensitive medical information.

The data sharing agreement — which was signed in 2015 and has since been superseded by a new contract — allows DeepMind access to medical records from 1.6 million patients attending London hospitals run by the NHS Royal Free Trust. Although at the time Google presented the deal as primarily about finding patients at risk from a condition known as acute kidney injury or AKI, the actual terms of the agreement, revealed in April 2016 by a New Scientist investigation, were more broad.

The report notes that DeepMind was given access not only to relevant blood tests and diagnostics, but historical medical records dating back five years including information on HIV diagnoses, drug overdoses, and abortions. The report also says the wording of the 2015 deal did not constrain the company from using AI analytical techniques on the data (something DeepMind disputes).

“I think it was a very flawed basis on which they originally operated,” Julia Powles, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Cambridge and a co-author of the report, told The Verge. “I’m pro data-driven health innovation, but I think that there are real questions of autonomy, public value, and competition that people ought to be looking at.”

In response to the report, published today in the journal Health and Technology, DeepMind and the Royal Free issued a statement saying that the study “completely misrepresents the reality of how the NHS uses technology to process data.” They say: “It makes a series of significant factual and analytical errors, assuming that this kind of data agreement is unprecedented.” The report’s authors say these accusations are unfounded, and have asked DeepMind and the Royal Free to respond to them on the record and in a public forum.

The cause of friction between these two readings of the agreement is complex, but often comes down to questions of intent and good faith. For example, the report notes that the 2015 deal does not addressed contractually how medical records would be “cabined from other identifiable data stored by Google, given that […] the company’s business model depends on monetizing personal data.” DeepMind’s response is that it made several public assurances that the Royal Free data would never be joined with Google user data, and that any such combination would be covered by the UK’s Data Protection Act, making it unnecessary to detail the issue within the 2015 agreement.

DeepMind’s Streams app was developed using the data from 1.6 million UK patients.

Powles and co-author Hal Hadson, who wrote the New Scientist story in April 2016, maintain that DeepMind’s ambitions in the healthcare industry are “vast” and “considerably out of step” with the company’s PR statements. They liken the relationship between the UK public and DeepMind to a one-way mirror. “Once our data makes its way onto Google-controlled servers, our ability to track it — to understand how and why decisions are made about us — is at an end,” they write.

DeepMind and Google have taken steps to respond to these criticisms already. In addition to the new data-sharing agreement signed with the NHS last November (still under review by the UK’s data watchdog), DeepMind has held a forum to answer questions from patients and members of the public about how its technology is being used. It also recently announced plans to develop blockchain technology that would let patients track every time their data is accessed. Powles praised the latter initiative, but suggested it didn’t go far enough in giving individuals power over their medical records. “What it doesn’t offer you is a robust way of withdrawing from the system,” she said.

More broadly, Powles and Hodson paint a picture of Google and DeepMind as companies poised to profit from access to UK health data that was created at the expense of the taxpayer. As well as its agreement with the Royal Free, DeepMind has partnered with other UK hospitals to access medical data including a million retina scans and hundreds of cancer scans. The exact terms of these deals — including how much DeepMind is getting paid for developing an app named Streams for the NHS — have been kept under wraps, despite requests for more information.

Nicola Perrin, part of the data and policy team at the Wellcome Trust, the world’s largest medical research charity, said that today’s report makes a number of important points but presents an “overly-critical” reading of the 2015 agreement. “There is no doubt that both DeepMind and the Royal Free made mistakes,” Perrin told The Verge. “But all the parties involved have also learned a significant amount.”

Perrin said: “It is important to remember [that] new data-driven technologies do offer real promise in improving healthcare. But the NHS will only be able to make the most of the opportunity that new technologies such as this can offer if the public has confidence that data is appropriately protected.”

DeepMind adds memory to its AI system to tackle multiple Atari games https://briefnews.eu/deepmind-adds-memory-to-its-ai-system-to-tackle-multiple-atari-games/ https://briefnews.eu/deepmind-adds-memory-to-its-ai-system-to-tackle-multiple-atari-games/#respond Wed, 15 Mar 2017 19:30:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/deepmind-adds-memory-to-its-ai-system-to-tackle-multiple-atari-games/

When Google announced in February 2015 that its DeepMind AI beat 49 Atari video games, it was a major step forward for machine learning, but it left the team behind DeepMind with a frustrating situation. Even though the AI could beat the games, it needed to be retrained to beat each new game, and quickly forgot how to play a game after it had moved on to the next one.

The researchers at DeepMind, however, have developed an algorithm to solve the problem: Elastic Weight Consolidation (EWC).

As explained in a paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal and an accompanying blog post, EWC allowed DeepMind’s AI to overcome the issues it encountered back in 2014. With EWC, the AI is now able to retain knowledge of the games and is able to learn multiple games in succession.

DeepMind developed EWC in order to overcome a phenomenon known as “catastrophic forgetting,” where new tasks and adaptations overwrite previously acquired knowledge and memories. The researchers explain in the paper that this usually occurs because the deep neural networks used for machine learning are typically only capable of learning multiple tasks when data is presented all at once. Human brains, in contrast, learn things sequentially.

While the researchers state that today’s “computer programs cannot learn from data adaptively and in real time,” they “hope that this research represents a step towards programs that can learn in a more flexible and efficient way.” They also say that their research “progresses our understanding of how consolidation happens in the human brain” by using neuroscience-based theories about acquired skills and memories in human brains. DeepMind’s further development of machine learning and memory represents progress toward more advanced AI, even though today’s AI tech still face major problems.

Previous DeepMind experiments include pitting AIs against each other to see if they would fight or cooperate, and defeating legendary Go player Lee Se-Dol.
