Corporate users should now be unafraid to roll out the Windows 10 April 2018 Update, aka Version 1803, to their fleets, according to Microsoft.

Over the course of Windows 10’s life, the precise terminology that Microsoft uses to denote this has changed. Originally, there was a split between the “Current Build”—the latest stable update with the latest monthly patch—and the “Current Build for Business.” This latter label was used to denote the version that Microsoft felt was sufficiently tested and stabilized as to be suitable to roll out to conservative corporate fleets. While the Current Build would be updated to each new major update as soon as it was released, the Current Build for Business typically lagged by a few months.

The terminology has now changed a bit: what was once “Current Build” is now “Semi-Annual Channel (targeted),” and “Current Build for Business” is now “Semi-Annual Channel.” But the effect is the same: as of yesterday’s patch, which brings Windows 10’s build number up to 17134.165, Version 1803 is now blessed with the Semi-Annual Channel label.

Faux poo? $40mn eradication program which found no foxes in Tasmania deemed a success https://briefnews.eu/faux-poo-40mn-eradication-program-which-found-no-foxes-in-tasmania-deemed-a-success/ https://briefnews.eu/faux-poo-40mn-eradication-program-which-found-no-foxes-in-tasmania-deemed-a-success/#respond Sat, 23 Dec 2017 06:18:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/faux-poo-40mn-eradication-program-which-found-no-foxes-in-tasmania-deemed-a-success/ A costly Tasmanian fox eradication program, which dragged on for over a decade but failed to find live specimens, has been cleared of accusations of planting fox poop to falsify the presence of the animals and secure funding.

The new report was issued by Tasmania’s anti-corruption Integrity Commission on Monday, concluding a lengthy investigation into the activities of the Fox Free Taskforce (FFT) and the Fox Eradication Program (FEP). The eradication programs ran from 2002 to 2014, spent over AUS$ 40 million (over US$ 36.7 million), but failed to find any live specimens in Tasmania, drawing numerous accusations of planting evidence to keep the funds flowing.

“While there were administrative and management issues, they were not indicative of misconduct,” the report reads, confirming the results of an earlier police investigation which also failed to find any criminality.

Red foxes have been trying to set their paws on Tasmania’s soil since their introduction to Australia in the 1830s, but have so far failed to do so. The most recent Tasmanian fox scare started in the beginning of the 2000s amid reports of local hunters importing a number of cubs, raising them and releasing them into the wild to roam free and be hunted.

A police investigation, launched in 2001, proved the reports to be “hearsay and gossip.” Rumors of their presence, however, became the cornerstone of a decade-long large-scale baiting and eradication program, since foxes establishing themselves in Tasmania would endanger indigenous species.

Over the years, fox eradicators managed to uncover four dead foxes, one fox skull, a blood sample, a sets of fox footprints, and 61 “fox-DNA positive scats.” Another set of footprints was documented back in 1998 ahead of the great fox scare. Tasmanian foxes proved to be elusive – or possibly nonexistent – since the team did not find, capture, or even film a single live specimen in more than 10 years.

While the Integrity Commission report highlighted mishandling of evidence and other oddities which plagued the eradication programs over the years, the evidence was deemed inconclusive to prove any wrongdoing on the team’s part.

Some of the fox corpses appeared to be road kill. One fox carcass, which a local hunter claimed to have shot with a shotgun, somehow contained no projectile fragments. At least one of the four foxes presented as evidence was likely a hoax, but the commission could not prove the eradication team was involved in it.

The most fruitful part of the hunt – the uncovering of droppings – has also raised many questions. The imported fox feces, used to train scat dogs, went missing on several occasions, “carried away by birds” or becoming “liquefied” in the environment. The commission did not rule out that some of the training samples could have been later collected as “evidence.” At least one of the researchers might have “fabricated or falsified evidence by placing fox scat into the landscape. However the strength of the available evidence is not sufficient to make a conclusive finding on this issue,” the report states.

The collected droppings might have been mishandled and contaminated during laboratory tests, the report states, citing eyewitnesses. On at least one occasion, an eyewitness observed the collected droppings simply piled up in the laboratory without any casings, which would inevitably lead to their intermixture and contamination.
Following the closure of the program, a new feces-hunt dubbed ‘The Great Poo Hunt 2014’ was conducted by the Invasive Species Branch of the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment. However, it failed to recover any waste produced by foxes.

The department, which used to run the programs, praised the report for “its clear findings that there is no direct evidence to support the allegations of misconduct,” acknowledging the comments on the “practices that impacted on these programs” and promising to improve the management of similar programs in the future. It, however, implied that the eradication program was a success, stating that the “rightful focus” of these programs was not to actually find any foxes, but instead to ensure that a “fox population did not establish.”

Red alert shuts down Bali airport as big Agung volcano eruption deemed ‘imminent’ (WATCH LIVE) https://briefnews.eu/red-alert-shuts-down-bali-airport-as-big-agung-volcano-eruption-deemed-imminent-watch-live/ https://briefnews.eu/red-alert-shuts-down-bali-airport-as-big-agung-volcano-eruption-deemed-imminent-watch-live/#respond Mon, 27 Nov 2017 01:38:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/red-alert-shuts-down-bali-airport-as-big-agung-volcano-eruption-deemed-imminent-watch-live/

Indonesian authorities have halted all air traffic at Bali’s international airport after raising the Agung volcano alert back to the highest level, and ordering people within 10 kilometers of the crater to evacuate out of fear of a potential big eruption.

Mount Agung volcano on the resort island of Bali has erupted two times in less than a week, firing columns of ash thousands of meters into the air. The increase in the volcano activity and discharges into the atmosphere prompted the local authorities to close off Ngurah Rai International Airport and issue the highest alert warning.

The airport, which was closed Monday morning local time, will remain closed until at least 7am local time Tuesday. The cancellation of flights will affect around 50,000 passengers who use the airport each day to come and depart the resort island.

Just before the airport closure, the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) raised the alert level to Level 4.

“Mount Agung eruption continues to increase. The rate of eruption of the Great Volcano now rises from the phreatic to magmatic phase,” BNPB said. “This indicates the potential for a larger eruption is imminent,” noting that occasional weak blasts can be heard 12 kilometers from the peak.

The agency advised communities, climbers and tourists around Mount Agung to stay at least 10 kilometers away from the crater. “People within a radius of 8 km and 10 km are urged to immediately evacuate in an orderly and calm manner,” BNPB added.

REVEALED: This soap has been deemed the most DANGEROUS for fictional characters https://briefnews.eu/revealed-this-soap-has-been-deemed-the-most-dangerous-for-fictional-characters/ https://briefnews.eu/revealed-this-soap-has-been-deemed-the-most-dangerous-for-fictional-characters/#respond Wed, 19 Jul 2017 00:48:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/revealed-this-soap-has-been-deemed-the-most-dangerous-for-fictional-characters/

EastEnders came out top of a list of fictional settings where characters are most likely to be victims of crime in the last 10 years.

The list was compiled by security system company ADT.

The unlucky people living in Walford had 10 times as many break-ins and fires than those in the least dangerous place – Ambridge, where BBC Radio 4 drama The Archers is set.

Researchers also compared the number of fictional fires and break-ins with the likelihood of them happening in the real-life area of the country where each soap was set and found that the BBC One programme’s location was disproportionately dangerous, with 9.5 people per 100 suffering incidents compared with London’s true figure of 3.4 per 100.

EastEnders should avoid The Queen Vic in particular as the pub is the most dangerous building in soap, having suffered nine break-ins and two fires in the last 10 years, with the damage caused estimated at £128,000.

A recent storyline saw the pub’s roof collapse and it was also the scene of soap villain Archie Mitchell’s death, when he was hit over the head with the bar’s bust of Queen Victoria.

Hollyoaks came in second place for residents needing to keep their wits about them, with 5.1 crimes per 100 people, more than Chester’s true number of 3.2 per 100.

The village may be small but has seen more than its fair share of murders, serial killers, kidnaps and arson attacks.

Emmerdale has got its crime ratio spot on for its location of Esholt in West Yorkshire, working out at 4.5 incidents per 100 people for both real-life and fiction.

Soaps may seem unrealistically dramatic, but all of the other major series actually include fewer crimes than people living in the real-life areas that they are set would expect.

River City only featured 3.6 victims of crime in every 100 people compared to Glasgow’s figure of 5.7.

Coronation Street has run high-profile storylines including murders and sexual abuse, but the crimes only amounted to 2.8 in every 100 people against Salford in Greater Manchester’s true figure of 4.2.

Welsh soap Pobol y Cwm has included 2.4 incidents per 100 residents, lagging behind Llanelli’s crime stats of 3.6.

Sleepy Ambridge is the safest place to be, where The Archers saw 0.9 victims of crime per 100 although residents of real-life location Inkberrow in the West Midlands live a more dangerous existence with 1.8 incidents per 100 people

ADT advised that many of the fictional crimes in soapland could have been avoided if characters locked their doors, checked their smoke alarms and fitted CCTV to their business premises.

Coronation Street: Bethany Platt gang rape deemed ‘most horrific soap scene ever’ by fans https://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-bethany-platt-gang-rape-deemed-most-horrific-soap-scene-ever-by-fans/ https://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-bethany-platt-gang-rape-deemed-most-horrific-soap-scene-ever-by-fans/#respond Thu, 01 Jun 2017 21:49:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-bethany-platt-gang-rape-deemed-most-horrific-soap-scene-ever-by-fans/

The character (played by Lucy Fallon) was persuaded to sleep with the males by “boyfriend” Nathan Curtis (Christopher Harper) at a sex ring party.

After earlier stubbing out a cigarette on her arm, he was seen giving her a spiked drink before coercing her into the gang rape.

The shocking moment was deemed the “most horrific” scene shown in a soap by one Twitter user, while the micro-blogging site was inundated with messages from disgusted fans.

“That’s probably the most horrific scene I’ve ever seen in any soap #corrie #Bethany,” the tweet read.

Two others continued: “What a truly disturbing ending #Corrie,” and: “That was truly awful and uncomfortable viewing #corrie.”

A third went on: “The way they look at her like she’s a piece of meat in the butchers! #Corrie makes me feel physically sick.”

While others commended Corrie’s portrayal of grooming: “Finding Bethany’s storyline so hard to watch but glad they raised the profile on this crime. #Corrie it is almost too well done.”

Meanwhile, in a teaser from tomorrow’s instalment, Bethany’s uncle David (Jack P. Shepherd) and her mother Sarah (Tina O’Brien) are seen dashing to her rescue.

Led by Shona Ramsey (Julia Goulding), he tells Sarah that she is being groomed suggesting the end is in sight for the poor teen.

Coronation Street continues tomorrow at 9pm on ITV.

Frocks off for priest who’s online dating ad deemed ‘pornographic’ https://briefnews.eu/frocks-off-for-priest-whos-online-dating-ad-deemed-pornographic/ https://briefnews.eu/frocks-off-for-priest-whos-online-dating-ad-deemed-pornographic/#respond Fri, 26 May 2017 08:10:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/frocks-off-for-priest-whos-online-dating-ad-deemed-pornographic/

A Swedish priest has been fired from his vocation after an ad he placed on a dating website was deemed to be pornographic by his church. The man was looking to meet a mistress, sex buddy or even fellow nude swimmers.

His plea for company, however, was frowned on by the Church of Sweden in his diocese of Strangnas, who said it’s not compliant with a priest’s way of life, reported local radio station Sodermanland.

The unidentified priest posted an image to the dating site with his vocation and identity visible.

He claimed to be a “good looking, responsive, polyamorous domineering man” who was seeking a mistress, friend, sex buddy, relationship, partner, date, couple or fellow nude bathers.

“I’m looking for someone to join me who wants to expand their sexual and sensual horizons. I expect you to understand what polyamorous means,” the ad read.

“He has been defrocked and is no longer allowed to be a priest,” Miriam Arreback, press secretary at the diocese said, as reported by The Local citing Swedish newswire TT.

The priest reportedly attempted to explain his actions, claiming he recently separated from his wife and had moved to a new town and was feeling lonely.

Disney Shelves ‘Beauty and the Beast’ in Malaysia After “Exclusively Gay Moment” Deemed Too Exclusively Gay https://briefnews.eu/disney-shelves-beauty-and-the-beast-in-malaysia-after-exclusively-gay-moment-deemed-too-exclusively-gay/ https://briefnews.eu/disney-shelves-beauty-and-the-beast-in-malaysia-after-exclusively-gay-moment-deemed-too-exclusively-gay/#respond Tue, 14 Mar 2017 18:26:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/disney-shelves-beauty-and-the-beast-in-malaysia-after-exclusively-gay-moment-deemed-too-exclusively-gay/ With all this talk of, hype over, and yes, even controversy about the “exclusively gay moment” in Disney’s live action Beauty and the Beast remake, you’d think (or hope) said “moment” would cut away to Josh Gad’s LeFou, around whom the “moment” centers, in a sling, being drizzled in the ejaculate of all of Disney’s two-dimensional Prince Charmings past. But alas, this gay “moment” is as significantly insignificant as the words “gay moment” should have always suggested — a cute, innocuous aside that the Internet prematurely overhyped as a messiah of representation. (A notion that even the cast has been trying to temper.) But now, other countries — their homophobic imaginations sent into a frenzy by all the super-gay talk around the film — have taken measures to censor it.

In Russia, which originally considered banning Beauty and the Beast as gay propaganda, the film is now restricted for people under 16. Even more extreme, Malaysia requested that the gay “moment” be cut altogether — and yes, I can’t believe I’m still writing about this diminutive thing with so much weight, but alas, such is the weight even the most G-rated (though technically PG, for some reason) gay millisecond gets in global politics.

“We have approved it but there is a minor cut involving a gay moment. It is only one short scene but it is inappropriate because many children will be watching this movie,” the film censorship board chairman, Abdul Halim Abdul Hamid, told the Guardian. In Malaysia, as the publication points out, sodomy can get you 20 years — and whippings — in prison. Sodomy was first criminalized in the country by a British colonial law, and the criminalization was maintained under relatively theocratic Muslim governance. (Russia, meanwhile, is an outlier as an anti-LGBT society, given that it’s far less religious than most such societies, but people view Russian Orthodoxy as symbolically important on a nationalist level, which has perpetuated a good deal of anti-LGBT sentiment). In Malaysia, you’re only allowed to depict gayness on film if the character repents for it, with a character “going straight” or being punished.

Now, Disney has shelved the film for release in Malaysia. It’d be nice to think they’re refusing to screen the film without the “moment” — perhaps out of corporate goodness/mild progressiveness, and/or also because capitulating to that ridiculous demand would surely be a PR nightmare domestically. But that’s speculation, as Disney has thus far said that they’re postponing the opening for “internal review,” and did not, per USA Today, make an actual appeal about the decision to cut the scene. Malaysia’s main movie theater chains reported that, without reason, the film opening has been postponed without a new date in sight.

How to get a free replacement tumble drier after hundreds deemed too dangerous to use https://briefnews.eu/how-to-get-a-free-replacement-tumble-drier-after-hundreds-deemed-too-dangerous-to-use/ https://briefnews.eu/how-to-get-a-free-replacement-tumble-drier-after-hundreds-deemed-too-dangerous-to-use/#respond Wed, 01 Mar 2017 12:43:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-to-get-a-free-replacement-tumble-drier-after-hundreds-deemed-too-dangerous-to-use/

If you have one of the faulty machines sold under the Hotpoint, Indesit, Creda, Swan and Proline brand names then you should demand a replacement from the shop you bought the machine from.

The machines could burst into flames – prompting understandable safety concerns among members of the British public.

Customers have been told to unplug the machine and wait for a repair man – but it is taking engineers weeks to make it to some customers.

Legal experts say you are entitled to a new, free tumble drier now.

Authorities warned in June that millions of lives are at risk due to fires caused by faulty tumble dryers.

By going to the shop where you bought the tumble drier you can claim a new one.

As the tumble driers were sold under the Sale of Goods Act 1979, products bought from shops must be of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose.

The responsibility falls to the retailers to replace or repair the machine.

Chris Haan, a solicitor at Leigh Day in London, told the Daily Mail: “Most people don’t realise that their contract is with the retailer, not the manufacturer.”

You can also claim compensation for losses caused by the faulty drier, such as using a laundrette.

How to check your machine is safe

Look inside your drier door or on the back of the machine for a green sticker.

If the green sticker appears the machine is safe to use.

If you can’t find one you may well have a faulty and dangerous machine.

How to get a repair

Go to the Hotpoint or Indesit website to register for a free repair, or you can call 0800 151 0905.

Otherwise you can go to the retailer and ask for a free replacements.

If you want a free replacement, try the retailer that sold you the dryer.

If you paid by credit card you can claim against the provider. Make sure you quote “Section 75 rules” when asking for your money back.
