Google Assistant buttons won’t just be limited to a handful of LG phones this year. The internet giant has widened its partnerships to add dedicated buttons to a whole range of handsets in 2019, including returning partner LG (on phones like the G8 ThinQ, V50 ThinQ and K40) and Nokia (3.2 and 4.2). Phones from Xiaomi (Mi Mix 3 5G and Mi 9), Vivo (V15 Pro) and TCL are also in line for Assistant buttons later on. Google expects over 100 million phones to ship with a hardware shortcut to its AI helper, and that’s not including Samsung phone owners who remap their Bixby buttons.

On all of these new additions, the button works the same. A single press launches the assistant, while double-tapping it gives you a visual snapshot of your day. A press-and-hold will turn it into a sort of walkie talkie that will keep listening for commands until you let go.

There’s no hiding why Google is pushing for this button: it’s all about winning the AI assistant wars. The easier the access to Google Assistant, the more likely you might be to use it over Amazon’s Alexa and other rivals. That, in turn, might convince you to buy Assistant-equipped smart devices and keep you glued to Google’s ecosystem.

  • A scathing watchdog report accused an immigration detention facility in California of providing substandard medical and dental care.
  • One of the two dentists overseeing the 1,700 detained immigrants said he doesn’t provide cleanings or fillings because he doesn’t have time.
  • The dentist suggested that immigrants who can’t afford floss from the commissary can prevent cavities by flossing with strings from their socks.

A California detention center housing nearly 1,700 immigrants provides such substandard medical care that inspectors called it a “significant threat” to immigrants’ health and well-being, a recently released Homeland Security watchdog report said.

Particularly troubling to the inspectors who in May visited the Adelanto facility, located about 85 miles northeast of Los Angeles, was the lack of dental care immigrants received, according to the inspector general’s report.

When Nintendo promised to revive the NES Classic Edition and SNES Classic Editions, we didn’t expect the company to do it this way. In celebration of Japanese manga magazine Weekly Jump, Nintendo will release a special gold and red Famicom Mini (NES to Western audiences) preloaded with 20 games that were based on manga from the magazine, as spotted by Kotaku. The mini console will be released in Japan on July 7th. If you really want one, your best bet is probably to keep an eye on eBay, or find a friend abroad.

Viacom has come a long, long way from the days when online video was seemingly its mortal enemy. The media giant has formally launched Digital Studios, a wing dedicated to (you guessed it) original internet shows. The initial programs in the works are all attached to familiar names like BET, Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon, and will be available across services like Facebook Watch, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube — it won’t just involve the previously unveiled Snapchat plans.

It’s easy to find a few highlights. There’s a BET sketch comedy show on YouTube from Majah Hype (The Majah Hype Show), a Facebook Watch celebrity news riff from Nikki Glaser (You Up? With Nikki Glaser), an extension of Broad City on multiple services (Hack into Broad City), a YouTube companion show for MTV’s Cribs (Cooking in the Crib with Snooki) and a Nickelodeon YouTube series covering a Minecraft tournament (Super League Gaming Minecraft City Champs). All told, Viacom is clearly aiming at a young audience.

You can also expect Twitter-specific news bites from BET, Comedy Central and TV.

Viacom hasn’t outlined release schedules as we write this, and most of these shows aren’t likely to make you ditch conventional TV. Not that the company necessarily minds. This is more about catering to a “mobile-first” audience that rarely if ever sits down to watch on a big screen. Viacom knows it can’t ignore this audience if it wants to stay relevant, and that means offering more than just a handful of material.

This year, Japan will deploy a Cray XC50 that will be the world’s most powerful supercomputer in the field of advanced nuclear fusion research. It will be installed at the National Institutes for Quantum and Radiological Science (QST) and used for local nuclear fusion science and to support ITER, the massive multinational fusion project scheduled to come online in 2035.

QST’s system, which has yet to be named, won’t even be the top Cray XC50 system (that honor is held by the Swiss National Supercomputing Center’s “Piz Daint“). It will crack the top 30, however and, as mentioned, be the fastest fusion research supercomputer.

Over 1,000 European and Japanese researchers will get access to the system, which is optimized for plasma physics and fusion energy calculations. “The speed and integrated software environment of the Cray XC50 will enhance QST’s infrastructure and allow researchers to speed time to discovery,” said Cray Japan’s Mamoru Nakano.

ITER is still a long way from even running, let alone heralding a breakthrough that will pave the way to commercial fusion reactors. Though it won’t be fully finished until 2035, scientists hope to start running experiments by 2025. Once commercial fusion reactors come online, they’ll be able to supply humanity with unlimited energy for potentially millions of years.

Recently, MIT announced that it would work on its own fusion project with the aim of bringing a 200 megawatt reactor online by the year 2033. It plans to use newly available superconducting materials and technology that can create magnetic fields four times stronger than any in use now. Such powerful magnetic fields are required to keep the explosive nuclear fusion reactions contained.

President Trump’s new 10-year plan for “rebuilding infrastructure in America” doesn’t contain any funding specifically earmarked for improving Internet access. Instead, the plan sets aside a pool of funding for numerous types of infrastructure projects, and broadband is one of the eligible categories.

The plan’s $ 50 billion Rural Infrastructure Program lists broadband as one of five broad categories of eligible projects. Here’s the full list:

  • Transportation: roads, bridges, public transit, rail, airports, and maritime and inland waterway ports.
  • Broadband (and other high-speed data and communication conduits).
  • Water and Waste: drinking water, wastewater, storm water, land revitalization, and Brownfields.
  • Power and Electric: governmental generation, transmission, and distribution facilities.
  • Water Resources: flood risk management, water supply, and waterways.

Eighty percent of the program’s $ 50 billion would be “provided to the governor of each state.” Governors would take the lead in deciding how the money would be spent in their states. The other 20 percent would pay for grants that could be used for any of the above project categories.

  • Discord has shut down a chat group on its service that was being used to share pornographic videos that had been edited using an artificial intelligence technology to include the images of female celebrities without their consent.
  • Dozens of people were active on the channel, which Discord said violated its rules on revenge porn.

Online chat service Discord has shut down a user-created chat group that was being used to share pornographic videos that had been doctored using artificial intelligence technology to include the images of female celebrities without their consent.

The company closed down the group shortly after Business Insider reached out to Discord about it. Discord took it offline because the chat group violated its rules against non-consensual pornography — otherwise known as revenge porn, a company representative said in a statement.

“Non-consensual pornography warrants an instant shut down on the servers whenever we identify it, as well as permanent ban on the users,” the representative said. “We have investigated these servers and shut them down immediately.”

Discord lets users create their own communities or “servers” around certain subjects. Originally intended as a tool for gamers to communicate, it is now used more broadly, with more than 14 million daily users it says, who send more than 300 million daily messages.

The chat group was called “deepfakes”, and it included several channels in which users could communicate. One was reserved for general discussions, another for sharing pictures that could be used to train the AI technology, and yet another for sharing the doctored videos. About 150 Discord users were logged into the deepfakes server earlier on Friday.

The users who created the chat group did attempt to set some ground rules for it. The rules stated that the videos couldn’t be doctored to include images of “amateurs;” instead, only images of celebrities and public figures were allowed. And the rules barred images or videos of children.

“It goes without saying that you should respect each other,” the rules added. “Be polite, avoid excessive swearing, and speak English at all times.”

Over the last few months, growing numbers of people have been using an AI technology called FakeApp to virtually insert images of celebrities and other people into videos in which they didn’t originally appear, as first reported by Motherboard in December 2017. People who are interested in the technology or who have already edited videos using it have been congregating on Discord and Reddit to exchange notes on how to use FakeApp and share their efforts. (A Reddit spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.)

Although the technology can be used for a variety of purposes, to date it’s largely been used to place the images of famous women into adult videos without their consent.

As of publication, a Reddit community dedicated to sharing the clips remained online, and users were discussing the closure of the Discord channel. Some had been banned from all servers across the service, they said. 

“The celeb faceswap gifs and videos seem to be slowly disappearing from this [subreddit], and now the discord is gone… I’m worried that the best fap fuel may be about to be buried,” one user wrote.

“Of course this has more potential than that, but come on. The porn is clearly the best part.”
