The video was filmed by rapper I-NZ as another parody of Childish Gambino’s ‘This is America.’ While Gambino took on police brutality and racial bias in his acclaimed work, the Iraqi rapper chose to cast the light on the ugly results of the Iraq War, with its well-documented instances of maltreatment and humiliation of detainees by US soldiers. The name of the former US military prison, Abu Ghraib, the video’s supposed set, became synonymous with abuse after harrowing images and accounts of physical and psychological torture within its walls became public in 2004.
‘This is Iraq’ starts with I-NZ, playing a prisoner in a distinctive orange jumpsuit, being forced by two armed “soldiers” to kill an elderly man peacefully playing a musical instrument.
“This represents the transition from old and beautiful to all that is new and ugly as a result of the invasion of your country. This is represented by soldiers who force the country into war and destruction that it did not ask for,” I-NZ told VICE Arabic, describing the scene.
At another point, it shows kneeling detainees apparently being prepared for execution. One of the most memorable images from Abu Ghraib – that of a hooded man standing atop a box in a shabby poncho with his face covered and electrical wires attached to his arms – gets recreated in the video. As I-NZ raps “This is Iraq, look at us blowin’ up, nobody showin’ up, nobody ownin’ up,” soldiers in American-style camo engage in violence in the background and pose for selfies with prisoners.
The rapper, who was born to Iraqi parents and grew up in New Zealand and has never actually been to Iraq in his life, highlights the lack of coverage on the issue and the impunity of foreign forces and local corrupt elites with the line: “They’re immune, this is telly, that’s the news, media blackout, then it’s lights out, keep sniffin’ the tar.” The video also mocks former US President George W Bush for his infamous May 2003 speech, which he delivered under a “Mission Accomplished” banner, and after which the war continued for eight more years, arguably paving the way for the rise of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) and for leaving the country in economic and political disarray.
The video was released on July 4, and it has been watched over 500,000 times on YouTube since. Speaking to VICE Arabic, the rapper said that he did not initially plan for it to coincide with the US Independence Day, however, he then decided to speed up the release to draw more attention to the issue.

“The US authorities have expelled American friends,” Antonov said of the departing diplomats in a video address. “They are not the US enemies… Our diplomats were developing cooperation between Russia and the US in different areas, among which are business, science, culture, space exploration and joint search for prisoners of war and missing in action.”
Calling the US’ decision to expel 60 Russian diplomats “unfortunate,” Antonov expressed confidence that the current rift between Washington and Moscow will eventually be a thing of the past.
“We want everybody to understand that we [US and Russia] are destined to become friends again,” the ambassador said, adding that “only close interaction between our countries can help maintain international strategic stability and find mutually beneficial solutions to global and regional challenges.”
“Relations between ordinary people shouldn’t suffer” when there are problems on the state level, Antonov said. “We’ll do everything in our capacity to make sure that Americans have zero problems with trips to Russia.”
US President Donald Trump chose to expel the diplomats and close Russia’s consulate in Seattle after allegations of Russian involvement in former double agent Sergei Skripal’s poisoning in the UK. The measure has been promoted by the UK government of Theresa May, who has been openly accusing Moscow of poisoning Skripal without providing Russia or the public with any evidence.
In early March, Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, were poisoned in Salisbury with what the UK said was a Soviet-designed nerve agent called ‘Novichok.’ Without a proper investigation being carried out, London blamed Moscow for masterminding the attack, expelled Russian diplomats and introduced other restrictions against Moscow.

Live footage from RT showed the departure of diplomats and their families from the Russian Embassy in Washington, DC. They are expected to be delivered to the airport in Washington on buses and board the two planes provided by Russian airlines, Rossiya. Before heading back to Russia, the aircraft will land in New York to pick up the expelled staff from the Russian missions there.

The bloody conflict marked 1,000 days earlier this month since the Saudi-led military intervention in March, 2015. The gloomy anniversary spells further sufferings for civilian population and offers little hope for the future, as the war-ravaged country “has passed the tipping into a rapid decline from crisis to deepening catastrophe,” the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), World Health Organization (WHO) and World Food Program (WFP) said in a joint statement Friday.
Since the battle between Yemeni rebels and the forces of ousted President Abd Rabbu Mansour, backed by Saudi Arabia first erupted, “the worst humanitarian crisis in the world” has spread across the entire country, the statement says. The UN estimated that by the end of 2017, some 75 percent of the Yemeni population would require humanitarian assistance, including some 11.3 children who rely exclusively on aid to survive.
Severe shortages of fresh water, food and lack of access to medical care, as well as an almost absent sanitation infrastructure have led to some 167,000 children suffering severe malnutrition, and rapidly induced outbreaks of cholera and diphtheria. Some 60 percent of the Yemeni population struggle to find food to eat, and a further 16 million lack access to water and sanitation.
Acute fuel shortages has sent the prices of basic commodities into orbit. And against a backdrop of a scarcity of fresh water and blocked humanitarian access, the price of water has skyrocketed an astronomical 600 percent, which essentially makes it a luxury for the majority of the poverty-stricken Yemenis. Diesel prices have doubled due to the restrictions on imports imposed by Saudi Arabia.
Despite the partial lifting of embargoes in some areas, the agencies warned that if full humanitarian access is not granted and the level of violence remain at the same high level, “the cost in lives will be incalculable.”
The situation on the ground does not inspire any optimism as the violence rages on, with “children and families yet again being killed in attacks and bombardments,” the three UN organizations wrote. “This horrific tally of the conflict’s devastation reflects only what we know. In reality, the situation is likely to be worse.” They added that it’s impossible to assess the scope of the catastrophe, particularly in the most heavily affected areas, as aid workers could not get there.
While the Yemeni population is enduring immense hardships as a result of over two and a half years of bombings and airstrikes coupled with a Saudi-imposed blockade, children are the most vulnerable victims of the crisis.
In a recent interview with RT, Dr. Meritxell Relano, the UNICEF representative in Yemen, estimated that more than 5,000 children were killed or maimed since the violence engulfed the country. About 2,000 have been dragged into the conflict as child soldiers. Despite all UN efforts, the only way to alleviate the plight of the Yemeni people trapped in the conflict is to find a political solution, she argued, warning, that more children could die in the coming year if a settlement is not reached.
UN calls to stop the bloodshed have so far been ignored. The Saudi-led coalition of nine states, that has been regularly accused of indiscriminate bombings, blasted a recent UN report on civilian casualties attributed to its airstrikes and accused the organization of bias toward the rebels.
The ongoing war in Yemen killed has killed more than 10,000 people, according to conservative estimates, most of them civilians. UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen, Jamie McGoldrick, said in his recent (Thursday) report that the coalition killed 68 people, including 8 children, and injured dozens in just two airstrikes conducted on one day.
“These incidents prove the complete disregard for human life that all parties, including the Saudi-led Coalition, continue to show in this absurd war that has only resulted in the destruction of the country and the incommensurate suffering of its people, who are being punished as part of a futile military campaign by both sides,” McGoldrick wrote.

The News Media Alliance, a trade group representing almost 2,000 news organizations, has asked US Congress for an exemption to antitrust law so that it can “negotiate collectively” with Google and Facebook.
The Alliance, formerly known as the Newspaper Association of America, complains that the two dominant Internet companies form a “de facto duopoly that is vacuuming up all but an ever-decreasing segment of advertising revenue.”

Two days after a National Security Agency-derived ransomware worm infected 200,000 computers in 150 countries, Microsoft on Sunday criticized the stockpiling of exploits by government spies, warning it results in damage to civilians.
The unusually blunt message from Microsoft President and Chief Legal Officer Brad Smith came after a weekend of tense calm, as security professionals assessed damage from Friday’s outbreak and braced themselves for the possibility of follow-on attacks that might be harder to stop. It also came 24 hours after Microsoft took the highly unusual step of issuing patches that immunize Windows XP, 8, and Server 2003, operating systems the company stopped supporting as many as three years ago.
Sunday’s salvo tacitly noted the NSA’s key role in Friday’s attack, which copied almost verbatim large sections of two highly advanced hacking tools that were stolen from the NSA and leaked to the world at large last month by a mysterious group calling itself Shadow Brokers. In the post, Smith wrote:

In response to US media hysteria over Russian outlets obtaining photos of Donald Trump’s closed-door meeting with Russian FM Sergey Lavrov, the White House says both a Russian and an American photojournalist were present.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s meeting with US President Donald Trump was widely anticipated by the media, and while it happened behind closed doors, it was the Russian Foreign Ministry that first publicized Lavrov’s visit to the Oval Office to the world.
What made the photo shoot even more intriguing was the attendance of Russia’s ambassador to the United States, Sergey Kislyak – a key figure in the investigation of the Trump administration’s ties to Russia.
After the pictures taken by a TASS correspondent became public, American journalists were quick to look for conspiracy theories.
State-run Russian “media” allowed to cover Trump meeting with Russian Foreign Minister. US media not so. Reality. #2017.

Observation: The world is getting almost all of its news about the US president today from the Russian gov’t and Russian state media.

NBC News correspondent Andrea Mitchell, who Lavrov last month scolded for her manners, appeared on MSNBC to criticize TASS’ presence at the Oval Office.
“The Russians had it all out globally while the White House press corps was kept out,” Mitchell said. “It’s unprecedented.”
It appears Russian state media agency TASS was allowed into the Trump-Lavrov meeting for photos.

Other journalists voiced their concern on Twitter, saying that they suddenly became reliant on Russian news outlets for pictures from the American president’s meeting.

The Washington Post cited US intelligence and White House officials who hinted that TASS’ visit to the office was a potential security breach. The officials feared that the TASS correspondent could have planted a spying device in the presidential office.
The photos of the clandestine Lavrov-Trump-Kislyak meeting were taken by TASS photographer Alexander Shcherbak. The photos were then distributed by the Associated Press, which credits the Russian Foreign Ministry as the source, and then Getty Images, which credits TASS.

As speculation over the TASS images gathered momentum, the White House responded, saying one Russian and one American photographer captured the historic encounter.
“On background, our official photographer and their official photographer were present, that’s it,” the White House said, according to a pool report, USA Today notes.

Meanwhile, a senior administration official dismissed fears that TASS planted a bug in the Oval office.
The Russian news agency “had to go through the same screening as a member of the US press going through the main gate to the [White House] briefing room,” the official told the Washington Post.
Another official also dismissed any speculation that Ambassador Kislyak was there to recruit Trump.
“It is standard practice for ambassadors to accompany their principals, and it is ridiculous to suggest there was anything improper,” the administration official told the Washington Post, adding that the White House rooms “are swept routinely” for listening devices.

Dutch police treated a Turkish delegation in a “harsh and rude way” despite the members’ diplomatic immunity, Turkey’s expelled family minister said upon her return in Istanbul.
Quoted by Anadolu news agency, Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya told reporters at Istanbul Ataturk airport that Dutch police had detained the entire Turkish delegation, including the chargé d’affaires and the minister’s advisor, as well as five people from her security detail.
“We were taken to the police headquarters and stayed there for 1.5 hours, and we were given very harsh and rude treatment,” Kaya said, noting “the European attitude towards a female minister three days after the International Women’s Day is a tragicomedy.”

The minister also pointed out that she had diplomatic immunity and that the Turkish consulate where she was expected to speak was “part of our homeland and we do not need to get permission for [entering it].”
She said “democratic and humanitarian values were trampled underfoot” as the Turkish delegation was being forcibly escorted to the German border near the town of Nijmegen.
The family minister was visiting Rotterdam to speak at an event organized to drum up support among emigre Turks for a referendum on expanding the powers of Turkey’s president, which is scheduled for April of this year.
The rally was subsequently derailed and the pro-Turkish demonstrators dispersed, with the Dutch authorities citing concerns that such events could affect security days before the Netherlands’ parliamentary elections.
The Netherlands’ actions have understandably infuriated Ankara, with top-tier officials promising retaliatory measures.
Shortly after President Recep Tayip Erdogan branded the Dutch “Nazi remnants,” Turkish authorities sealed off the Dutch embassy and consulate. Meanwhile, the Dutch ambassador to Turkey, who is currently home on leave, was told not to return to his post “for some time.”
Later on Sunday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that Ankara demands a formal apology from the Netherlands.
“We have begun to give a response and said the [Dutch] ambassador should not come to [Turkey] and he cannot. We will take steps and then the Netherlands will apologize. Otherwise, we will continue to take these steps,” Cavusoglu was quoted by Hurriyet as saying.
Meanwhile, the Dutch Foreign Ministry said that Ankara bears responsibility for the safety of its diplomats in Turkey, according to Reuters.
“The situation is unclear. The Turkish authorities are responsible for the safety of the Dutch diplomatic mission in Turkey. We have filed a complaint with the Turkish authorities,” the Dutch Foreign Ministry said shortly after Turkish protesters pulled down the Dutch flag outside the consulate general of the Netherlands in Istanbul and replaced it with Turkey’s.
Amid the tit-for-tat row, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said he is determined to alleviate the mounting tensions between the two NATO allies.
“I’ve never experienced this before, but we want to be the more prudent party,” Rutte said, as cited by Reuters.
On Monday, Nils Usakovs, took to the social media platform to condemn the center and its policies, which he described as “medieval savagery”.
“The Latvian State Language Center launches an investigation why the mayor of Riga, when asked a question by Russian-speaking children, answered them in Russian,” Usakovs wrote.
“The spokesperson for the State Language Center publically states that the Mayor of Riga, even on his own personal Facebook profile, can write only in Latvian,” Usakovs continued.
“This medieval barbarism along the lines of ‘a mayor cannot answer a Russian child in Russian’ is, putting it mildly, incomprehensible. Not to me, I’m long used to the VVC. But to those children who, in the opinion of the VVC, can only ask questions in their native language outside working hours.”
Usakovs compared the government’s stance towards languages to the Soviet regime and blamed the VVC’s position on the tight political grip of the nationalist parties.
“Latvia spends her last money on defense and loves every platoon of allied soldiers that comes by. But our nation will never be safe while right-wing parties in Latvia continue their current policies towards the Russian-speaking residents of the country.”
Usakovs noted that British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson, during his tenure as mayor of London, called on Londoners to celebrate Maslenitsa in Russian, while the official website of Berlin has information in German, English, French, Italian, Chinese, Polish, Russian and Turkish languages. Even the NATO homepage has information in Russian, in addition to English, French, and Ukrainian.
Latvia, as a former Soviet republic, has a large Russian-speaking minority, with about 37 percent of the people considering Russian their primary language. For some of them, like small children in Russian families, Russian is the only language they can speak well.
However, Latvian is legally the only official language in the country, and passing a language test is mandatory in order to receive full citizenship. Hundreds of thousands of ethnic Russians living in Latvia are languishing as “non-citizens”, ineligible to vote or take public office.
Last year, Usakovs and his City Hall were fined €140 ($ 148) for posting information in both Latvian and Russian on his official social media account.
“If we talk about the essence of social networking, it is a form of remote communication,” VVC representative Viesturs Razumovskis told the BBC’s Russian service. “With respect to the Latvian or foreign social networks it does not matter, what information the municipality gives, but whether it is given at all. And if we are talking about information from the government, it must be in the state language.”
Usakovs appealed the decision which was upheld by the Riga District Court, but signaled that he intends to appeal again. Latvia’s State Language Law mandates that both local and national governments may only use the official state language for informing the public, with a few exceptional cases.
“It is clear what the law requires, but also from a human point of view, if we want to engage people among us who speak a foreign language, for instance, Russian-speakers,” Delfi reported Ingrida Berzins, Deputy Director of VVC, as saying. “We are not just helping them integrate, we are paving the way for [full] integration.”
Usakovs is the leader of the center-left Harmony party, which represents the interests of Russian speakers in Latvia. In the 2014 parliamentary elections, Harmony won 23.1 percent of the vote, the most of any other party, but was kept out of power by a coalition of the three runners up – Unity, National Alliance and the Union of Greens and Farmers.
