ONE food that you can find in stores for as little as 31p per portion could help you slash “bad” cholesterol in your body, recent research suggests. Consuming it once a day could make a difference.
]]>How does this magic work exactly? Well, let me tell you:
Incorporating snacks into your mid-morning and mid-afternoon can balance out your blood sugar, preventing those dreaded spikes and crashes. A proper snack can also lead to sustained energy by providing you with energy all day long.
Remember, food is fuel. So without adding gas to your tank, you will quickly run out leading to decreased productivity and a crabby mood.
What about the healthy weight you may ask? When you provide your body with proper fuel throughout the day, you don’t meet meal time with starvation. You have more control when you dinner plate lands on the table, leading to decreased portions and less chance of over-eating. In fact, oftentimes I recommend snacks to most of my nutrition clientele.
The perfect snack follows a simple formula: Protein + Produce. This will give you carbs for a quick energy bump combined with fiber and protein for sustaining that energy. This snack duo also lends itself to be quite portable. A no fuss approach to feeling better throughout the day is always welcome.
Here are some healthy snacks for work to sustain your energy, keep your focus locked in, and promote that healthy weight:

Cucumber sandwiches follow that perfect snack combo of protein + produce. The light and refreshing cucumber “buns” are a great delivery system for the protein-rich turkey slices.
Cucumbers are also a great source of hydration as they are made up of mostly water! And, yes, you can eat your water.

Cucumbers again?! Yup, these little fruits (not even a veg) are so easy and friendly for all snackers.
Creating open-faced tuna salad sandwiches is a great way to have snack that will keep you going until your next meal. The tuna provides you with healthy fats that pairs nicely with the crunch of the fibrous cucumber.

This classic combination is a tried and true method of snacking for a reason. It’s super easy, fun to mix up, and provides a nutritious punch.
Check out this list of some great trail mix variations and ideas! Be sure to go for low-sodium nuts and no sugar added dried fruits to keep unwanted empty calories at bay.

You can call these dessert nachos or apple cookies. But either way they make one heck of a snack!

]]>Hopefully, you know what it’s like to wake up in the morning and realize you’ve slept so soundly that you never moved from the spot in which you fell asleep. There are no confusing, half-remembered dreams and a mild lower back pain that means you at one point slept diagonally on top of a pillow. It’s the caliber of rest that’s refreshing enough to be memorable.
Wouldn’t it be nice if you could have that every night? — or, if not every night, at least many more of them?
One way to put yourself in a position for that exact quality of deep sleep is by grabbing a weighted blanket. They’ve been used therapeutically for sensory disorders, anxiety, depression, autism, insomnia and more, and there are some surprisingly unsurprising reasons why.
The idea is that weighted blankets tap into DPTS, or deep pressure touch simulation — a type of therapy that works in the same way that massages do. While light touches alert the nervous system, deep pressure has a relaxing, calming effect on the body. It might seem too simple to be real, but DPTS can rapidly decrease your anxiety and stress levels. The pressure mimics the same sensation as a nice warm hug, relaxing the nervous system through the simulation. While our minds are complex, our bodies can still be as simple as that. Deep pressure has been likened to the popular practice of swaddling babies to calm them; we not unsurprisingly haven’t outgrown the biological response to being held. A pressure that feels grounding, safe, and comfortable helps humans feel relief, comfort, and security.
There are studies that actually demonstrate how “grounding” the human body during sleep actually measurably reduces or eliminates pain and stress.
It’s something we see again in inventions made for animals — like this weighted “anxiety jacket” that one BI staffer entered as the best thing she had ever bought a pet. It’s a drug-free way to deal with separation anxiety by increased pressure. We shouldn’t be surprised the same thing works for us in a bigger size. After all, we’re also animals.
Weighted blankets work simply. They’re a basic invention that elicits a natural response. Deep pressure relaxes the nervous system. It encourages serotonin and dopamine production, which makes you happier. Serotonin converts to melatonin, which makes you sleepy.
While it can be especially helpful for those who deal with anxiety, depression, trauma, high energy, or sleep disorders, the effects of a weighted blanket can be enjoyable for pretty much anyone. A bump in serotonin, melatonin, and deeper sleep is something many of us would happily sign up for, seeing the benefits take place in our daily life.
If you’re interested in trying out the technology for yourself, this blanket by YnM seems to be the best value option.
It’s highly-rated on Amazon (and has a great authenticity-check rating from Fakespot), as well as offering some bonuses other weighted blankets may not: There are multiple sizes and weights for the ideal fit and width (they recommend picking whichever is about 10% of your body weight), and the segmented design allows you to move around without displacing all the weighted beads inside. While some blankets have been found to trap heat, the 100% cotton construction should help regulate heat better so you won’t wake up too hot or cold.
If you’re looking for an easy, natural way to reduce stress and anxiety or you just want to get deeper, better sleep every night, you might want to give YnM’s weighted blanket a try.

The joint efforts of Russia, Turkey and Iran on a settlement of the Syrian conflict are paying off, as the level of violence has decreased in the country, Vladimir Putin said after meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Sochi.
Putin and Erdogan emerged after a marathon four-hour-long meeting. In addition to Syria, they discussed several other bilateral issues, ranging from joint counter-terrorism efforts to economic cooperation in the trade and energy sectors.
“I would like to note with satisfaction that our joint work with Turkey and Iran as guarantors of the ‘Astana process’ continues to yield concrete results. The level of violence has certainly decreased and favorable conditions are being created for promoting inter-Syrian dialogue under the auspices of the UN,” the Russian President told reporters.
Putin and Erdogan also agreed to “step up efforts to ensure long-term normalization in this country, primarily to advance the process of political settlement and to assist the Syrians in post-conflict reconstruction.“
The Turkish leader echoed Putin by saying the Astana meetings “have made some contribution to reducing violence in this region.” Erdogan added, “We came to an agreement that, at this moment, there’s ground, which allows us to focus on the political resolution” of the Syrian crisis.

WASHINGTON – U.S. traffic deaths jumped 5.6 percent in 2016 to a decade-high of 37,461, and pedestrians killed rose 9 percent to 5,987, the highest number since 1990, the U.S. auto safety agency said on Friday.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said fatalities rose 2.6 percent to 1.18 deaths per 100 million miles driven, outpacing the mileage increase in 2016.
This was the second straight year of a sharp rise in U.S. traffic deaths. In 2015, they rose 8.4 percent, the single highest yearly jump in motor vehicle deaths since 1964.
Before 2015 U.S. traffic deaths had been falling for a decade as automakers added anti-rollover technologies and more air bags, the agency said in a report. Automakers are also adding features to help avoid rear-end crashes and other driver errors.
The last time traffic deaths were higher was in 2007, when 41,259 were killed on U.S. roads.
Bicyclist deaths rose 1.3 percent to the highest number since 1991, the data showed.
Deaths involving distracted drivers fell by 2.2 percent to 3,450 deaths, while drowsy deaths decreased by 3.5 percent. Distractions include talking or texting on the phone, eating, drinking and fiddling with the stereo or navigation system.
Drunk driving deaths rose 1.7 percent to 10,497 and speeding-related deaths increased 4 percent to 10,111. The agency said 2,500 deaths would have been prevented if all occupants wore safety belts.
Senior citizen drivers are accounting for a rising number of traffic deaths, the report showed. Drivers in fatal crashes aged 65 and above rose 8.2 percent last year.
The report may provide more ammunition for automakers and technology companies that are pushing Congress to pass legislation to help speed self-driving cars to market. A Senate committee unanimously passed such legislation earlier this week.
John Bozzella, chief executive of Global Automakers, an industry association whose members include Toyota, Hyundai and Honda, said in a statement that the news was disheartening.
“We are on the verge of taking a quantum leap in road safety with the deployment of driver assists, connected vehicles, and automated technologies that will help address and mitigate the main causes of fatalities, human error and impairment,” he said.
Reuters reported on Friday that the Trump administration had not nominated a candidate to head the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which remains without much of its permanent leadership team.

IBS is a common, long-term condition of the digestive system, and can lead to debilitating side-effects such as stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation.
According to the NHS, it affects one in five people in the UK at some point in their life, and targets twice as many women as men.
The exact cause of the condition is unknown, but it is thought among experts to be due to an increased sensitivity of the gut.
While triggers can vary from person to person, these foods – widely considered to be healthy – are commonly thought to exacerbate IBS.
Carbs
Fibre is important for a healthy digestive system, but certain kinds can be problematic for people with IBS.
A type known as insoluble fibre – found in wheat bran and whole grains – can cause diarrhoea in those who can’t tolerate it.
It is recommended IBS sufferers consume soluble fibre instead, from sources such as grains, root vegetables, fruit and legumes such as peas.
However, some grains may also not be suitable for IBS sufferers who are intolerant to gluten, in the same way as those who have coeliac disease.
Gluten, a protein, can be found in rye, wheat and barley.
Dairy
The fat in dairy foods – like milk, yoghurt and cheese – can increase diarrhoea.
Switching to low-fat or non-fat dairy could help reduce this.
Many people with IBS are also lactose intolerant, meaning that a person is unable to digest a sugar called lactose which is commonly present in dairy.
Eliminating dairy completely and swapping in alternatives like tofu and nut milks could help.
Vegetables
While beans and legumes are important sources of fibre – and can help constipation – they can cause gas, bloating and cramps.
Similarly, garlic and onions can be difficult for the intestines to break down, meaning excess gas can be released causing painful cramps.
Broccoli and cauliflower can also be hard for many people to digest, and are a well-known IBS trigger.
Breaking both down in your intestine can cause gas and constipation symptoms.
However, it is important to note that vegetables are a key source of vitamins and minerals and should make up a significant proportion of your diet.
Additionally, limiting alcohol, chocolate and processed foods can help ease IBS.
Before cutting out any food groups ensure you see a doctor first to ensure you don’t miss out on vital nutrients.
IBS – or irritable bowel syndrome – can trigger pain and symptoms such as bloating, stomach cramps and diarrhoea. But changing your diet by avoiding certain ‘healthy’ foods could help.![]()
Jeremy Corbyn’s election would be likely to spell disaster for those looking for love online in the UK, according to eHarmony CEO Grant Langston.
On the other hand, if Theresa May is elected in the 2017 election then the UK’s chances of couples finding love will remain ‘strong and stable’.
This is because in times of uncertainty Britons have a habit of withdrawing, and spending time with family and friends, the online love expert claimed.
“If it ends up that (Theresa May) remains Prime Minster I think there will be no effect,” Grant, who founded eHarmony in August 2000 explained.
“We’re already on the horse, I think if it goes another direction now you’ll have more confusion.”

Jeremy Corbyn: His election could spell disaster for the love lives of the British people
“It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if there is a dramatic decrease in communication,” Grant continued.
And Grant’s views are not just vague speculation.
There are stats that reveal quite plainly the effect the political uncertainty has on Brits reaching out online to find a partner.
Immediately after Brexit communications on eHarmony decreased by a whopping 18 per cent, which Grant believes is down to lack of optimism stifling people’s hopes for love.
“It seems to us that because of the depressing facts, the confusion and the uncertainty that accompanies something like (Brexit), the British decided that dating wasn’t something they wanted,” Grant said.

Jeremy Corbyn’s election would be likely to result in less communications on eHarmony
Jeremy Corbyn as Prime Minister could spell disaster for the love lives of the British people
“You need a certain amount of optimism to date, you need to hold out hope there is someone attractive out there.
“So when things seem uncertain people’s reaction is to take a pause and make their life about family and friends.”
However, there is a ray of light for British voters that also helps give credence to Grant’s theory.
When Theresa May was announced as Prime Minister the number of communications soared back to its original level.
“We see an increase when Theresa May was named as Prime Minister. Then people felt a little more secure about their lives,” Grant added.
“The British are well known for being determined people who get on with it, but when trouble happens it’s natural to be knocked off your game.”
People are writing more about their political views on eHarmony than ever before, Grant claims.
“It’s a lot more important now than it was five years ago, politics is an increasing litmus test for who we want to be with.”
People are being much more choosy about coupling up with others who have the same views.
“We see more people writing in their profiles that they are very conservative or liberal and these are the kind of people they want to date,” he said.

Online dating: Poltical uncertainty makes Brits withdraw according to eHarmony’s CEO
Interestingly, Grant notes that while British people withdraw in times of uncertainty, Americans are the opposite. They tend to reach out more in politically uncertain times.
“I worked at eHarmony when 9/11 happened and the trend we saw after that was a dramatic increase in communication,” Grant said.
“When the world felt like a dangerous and unpredictable place people wanted the solace of a relationship.
“They wanted to find someone to go through this scary time with, and when Trump was elected we saw the same thing,” he said.
Ahead of World Book Day on April 23rd, the relationship experts at eHarmony mined site data to find the most frequently occurring book titles in user profiles.
What Britain’s decision to leave the EU will do to its property market is a question that has been asked frequently.
The simplest answer to the question possibly lies in what we’ve already seen, which isn’t a lot, according to Buy Association.
The property advice website says the impact of the Brexit vote last year was hardly noticeable when it comes to the property market.
House prices have been rising constantly with only London being an exception to that rule.
London has seen a decrease in house prices and with that seems to have lost its Number One spot of ever growing desirability.
But Paulina Carl, Author at Buy Association, said: “Putting that purely down to Brexit would be a great mistake, especially considering the stamp duty changes came into effect only two months prior to the referendum.
“And the argument that a change to tax regulations adding a rather substantial amount to an already rather large price tag will have a bigger impact on an investor’s decision than the possibility of a country leaving a political union is an easy one to make.
“Which means one may be better off explaining London’s dropping popularity with tax changes rather than political instability.”
When it comes to the rest of the country, there’s one simple factor that, almost automatically, makes Brexit seem less important – the growing gap between supply and demand.
Estimates suggest the country is in need of 174,000 new homes to be built every year to balance out the demand – but Britain is far from reaching this at the moment.
Paulina added: “If anything, triggering Article 50 was the first step towards certainty after almost nine months of not knowing what will happen next.
“So whilst the next two years might be a bit of a bumpier ride, filled with hard negotiations and tough decisions, the long-term outlook for Britain’s property market is still one worth taking note of.”
Robert Gardner, Nationwide’s chief economist, spoke about the growth in his housing market outlook for 2017.
He said: “Looking forward house price prospects will depend crucially on developments in the wider economy, around which there is a larger degree of uncertainty than usual.
“Like most forecasters, including the Bank of England, we expect the UK economy to slow modestly next year, which is likely to result in less robust labour market conditions and modestly slower house price growth.
“But we continue to think a small gain (around 2 per cent) is more likely than a decline over 2017 as a whole, since low interest rates are expected to help underpin demand while a shortage of homes on the market will continue to provide support for house prices.”
