That is the belief of Norwegian football analyst Ben Wells, who has studied Solskjaer’s Molde side over the last three seasons.

Solskjaer, who spent 11 years of his playing career at Old Trafford, was appointed interim boss last week following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

The Norwegian’s contract expires at the end of the season, when he is expected to resume his post as manager of Molde.

The 45-year-old has, however, expressed his desire to secure the United job full-time, despite acknowledging he is a short-term fix for the club.

Nevertheless, Solskjaer made clear in his first press conference after taking the helm that he will have a say in any transfer activity during the January window, which opens next week.

“I will have an input, of course,” he told the media.

“The job now is to get to know the players, observe them and see the qualities we’ve got.

“The club have got their recruitment and scouting, so I’m sure they’ve got their targets. But I’ve not sat down and talked about that, because my job is to get these players enjoying football.”

Wells, who watches every Eliteserien game as an analyst for FootballRadar, is not convinced the United legend will bestow such weight in recruitment discussions, though.

Speaking about the winter window, Wells told Express Sport: “It wouldn’t surprise me if there were signings, but I can’t imagine they would go via Solskjaer.

“He might have a final say, but a lot of it would go over his head beforehand. It’ll be intriguing to see how they do back him. It does matter to an extent if he’s going to get anything out of the team.”

As for which positions Solskjaer would identify as areas for improvement, Wells added: “Obviously United need a defender.

“But, historically, especially with Molde, he’s not gone out of his way to sign top quality centre-halves or full-backs.

“I do think that, as an outsider, United have more than enough in attack for Solskjaer to work with.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if he looked to bring in a midfielder; a more attack-minded midfielder. At Molde he played with guys who were given licence to get forward, take shots from outside the box.

“But at the same time, the board will more likely push for a defender, if that’s the issue.”

RT is “extremely disappointed” following British broadcasting regulator Ofcom’s announcement that some content on the RT news network was in breach of impartiality rules.

In a bulletin issued December 20, Ofcom stated that a total of seven programmes or segments, including Sputnik, Crosstalk and various items of news coverage were found to be in breach of UK regulator rules. Most of these investigations were sparked by Ofcom itself, without viewer complaints.

When initiating the first set of investigations, Ofcom connected them to events in Salisbury, UK, which had no ostensible connection to the news broadcaster. Of a total of 10 investigations launched in spring 2018, 7 resulted in “breach” findings, while 3 broadcasts were found not to be in breach of the code.

“RT is extremely disappointed by Ofcom’s conclusions in what were almost all self-initiated investigations into RT by the regulator.”

“We operate under rules outlined by the regulator, and always strive to abide by them. It appears Ofcom has failed to fully take on board what we said in response to its investigations and, in particular, has not paid due regard to the rights of a broadcaster and the audience.”

“We are reviewing the findings Ofcom has put forward and will decide shortly the nature of our next steps.”

  • A fintech startup is giving cash rewards for consumers who sign up for its account and then take active steps to improve their financial health.
  • Status Money is pioneering a novel approach to personal financial management, effectively sharing some of the referral money with customers that it collects from suggesting credit cards or personal loans.
  • The startup is one of the first to introduce techniques more akin to video games into the personal finance arena. JPMorgan is among other firms considering similar moves.

A startup plans to pay you for opening a credit card with a lower rate. Or moving your money into a higher-yielding savings account. Or using a coupon at your favorite retailer.

The service is the brainchild of Status Money, a relatively new player in an industry led by larger firms like Mint or CreditKarma that recommend credit card offers, high-yield savings accounts or online personal loans within free personal finance software. In return for sharing their data, consumers get access to offers. The tech companies receive what is effectively a referral fee.

Britons at risk of OUTLIVING their pension pot – are you making the right decisions? https://briefnews.eu/britons-at-risk-of-outliving-their-pension-pot-are-you-making-the-right-decisions/ https://briefnews.eu/britons-at-risk-of-outliving-their-pension-pot-are-you-making-the-right-decisions/#respond Wed, 08 Aug 2018 17:54:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/britons-at-risk-of-outliving-their-pension-pot-are-you-making-the-right-decisions/

Pensions are a regular payment made by the state or a private company to Britons when they retire.

After a long working life it is often something to look forward to, but can also be a big source of worry.

Pensions are sometimes a minefield, with making the right decisions and saving enough being of high importance.

New research has now revealed that many Britons could actually outlive their pension pots.

According to the study by the Pensions Policy Institute (PPI), 28 per cent of retirees face decisions that could see them outlive their pension pot in retirement.

The Evolving Retirement Outcomes report, sponsored by Legal & General, found that borrowers approaching retirement with high levels of defined contribution savings, but little or no defined benefit pension, could see their retirement income vary by up to 70 per cent.

This will be based on decisions they have made, and continue to make, about their private pensions.

The study stated that if Britons withdraw between 3.5 per cent and 10 per cent per year, the Pensions Policy Institute found that these decisions could potentially increase the number of years they spend in retirement after having depleted their pension savings by up to 15 years.

According to the PPI research, consumer uncertainty about how long they expect to live in retirement posed a significant challenge to retirees trying to make their savings last throughout later life.

The findings raised the importance of including some form of income security when planning for retirement, such as an annuity, to prevent pension pots being exhausted.

The research also showed the importance of consumers seeking professional advice and guidance when planning retirement to help them secure better outcomes in later life.

However, it also showed that decisions about how individuals receive income in retirement are not a “once and done” event.

Financial capability and the impact of ageing on cognitive ability both meant retirees would need to revisit their retirement plan throughout later life.

Emma Byron, managing director for Individual Annuities, Legal & General said: “Pension reforms have given many of us the flexibility we want for retirement, but it also means that we now have to make our own decisions about how we access our pension pots.

“As this research shows, that could lead to a retirement that we didn’t anticipate, with many of us potentially outliving the money we’ve saved for later life.

“I believe that these findings pinpoint the importance of taking advice when it comes to planning retirement, whether it’s to understand the options like annuities and drawdown or to get a better understanding of how the choices we make might affect our experience of later life.

Policy researcher for PPI Lauren Wilkinson added: “If people are engaged and informed, they are able to achieve positive outcomes using the range of products already available to them.”

There are many types of pensions that can be received, the most accessible is the state pension.

But, how do you actually get your state pension? You do not get a pension automatically, most Britons need to claim the money for their retirement.

The only people who get their pension automatically are men born before 6 April 1951 and women born after 6 April 1953. Those born on or after these days will have to claim their own pension.

  • Tightened credit conditions have one Chinese manufacturer with $ 7 billion in debt begging for help. It won’t be the last one to do so.
  • Beijing will have to start deciding who lives and who dies in China’s corporate sector.
  • Investors shouldn’t just worry about who gets bailed out, they should also worry about how. In China, healthy companies can easily be conscripted to save sick ones.

A private Chinese manufacturer, DunAn Group, has sent a letter begging the Chinese government to help it out with its $ 7 billion of debt.

Expect to hear more companies cry for help as the government attempts to ween the country off of the easy credit that has lubricated its corporate sector since the Global Financial Crisis in 2008.

Iran warns US not to make ‘foolish’ decisions on Syria https://briefnews.eu/iran-warns-us-not-to-make-foolish-decisions-on-syria/ https://briefnews.eu/iran-warns-us-not-to-make-foolish-decisions-on-syria/#respond Wed, 14 Mar 2018 23:54:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/iran-warns-us-not-to-make-foolish-decisions-on-syria/ Iran has warned the United States not to make any “foolish” decisions regarding possible military action against Syria.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi advised the White House to think carefully before adopting a more interventionist approach in Syria. The comments from Qassemi come after President Donald Trump ousted Rex Tillerson as the US Secretary of State on Tuesday.

Tillerson was regarded as less of a hawk than many others in the Trump administration when it comes to foreign policy, and, since his departure, some foreign policy experts have speculated that the White House is preparing to take new military action against Syrian government forces.

Trump’s choice to replace Tillerson with CIA Director Mike Pompeo is further indication that his foreign policy could be moving in a more hawkish direction. Pompeo has maintained hardline views on Iran, North Korea and Russia.

The move comes as Russian Army General Valery Gerasimov warned this week that Washington was preparing to launch airstrikes against Syria using alleged chemical attacks as a pretext.

On Monday, US envoy to the UN Nikki Haley warned that the US was willing to take action against Syria if the international community “fails to act.” Haley cited last year’s attack by the US military on Shayrat airbase. Those strikes were ordered in response to accusations of a chemical attack launched by Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces. The US waited only three days before striking the airbase, despite the fact that there was no conclusive proof that the attack was carried out by Syrian government forces.

Washington has accused Damascus and Moscow of using excessive force in eastern Ghouta, a region which has been controlled by terrorist groups for years. Russia has consistently claimed that Western powers are using the situation in the Damascus suburbs as a pretext to put pressure on Moscow, and has insisted that its anti-terrorism operations there have not violated the ceasefire agreement.

Damascus has denied the use of chemical weapons, insisting that it has no reason to use such weapons, given that its forces are maintaining the upper hand against rebel and terrorist groups.

Haley also accused Russia of failing to observe a 30-day ceasefire in the war-torn country and said Moscow inserted an “anti-terrorism loophole” into the agreement. She said a new US-sponsored ceasefire resolution would not include an anti-terrorism loophole, but she did not specify how Washington plans to prevent terrorist groups from breaking the ceasefire.

In response to Haley’s comments, Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said the US was trying to cover up its own failure to properly control anti-government militant groups, with which they have close contact.

Lavrov said that the US plans to remain in Syria for a long time “if not forever,” by using chemical weapons provocations as a pretext for its continued presence. The ultimate goal, he said, was to contribute to the collapse of the Syrian Arab Republic.

Tehran has defended its own role in Syria. Unlike the US-led coalition, Iran’s presence is due to an official request by Damascus, Qassemi said. He stressed that Iran’s priority is to see peace return to Syria “through diplomacy” rather than by further destabilizing military action.

Moscow has warned that it will respond if Washington makes any more attacks on Syrian forces or puts its own Russian servicemen at risk.

  • 25 Republican senators sent a letter to President Donald Trump asking him to get the US back into the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement.
  • Trump pulled the US out of TPP on the third day of his presidency, but recently said he is open to renegotiating the deal.
  • But recent moves by the Trump administration suggest that the president is favoring more protectionist trade policies.

More than two-dozen Republican senators on Tuesday released a letter they sent to President Donald Trump, requesting the president reengage on talks to join one of the world’s largest trade agreements.

The letter, spearheaded by Sen. Steve Daines of Montana, asked Trump to reconsider his decision to pull the US out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The president signed an executive order to begin the process of removing the US from TPP negotiations on January 23, 2017 — just three days after he took office.
