The Royal Family announced on Saturday that the funeral for Queen Elizabeth II will take place on September 19, but who exactly will make the guest list is still up in the air.
The Queen died on Thursday at age 96 after a historic 70-year reign. Buckingham Palace has long planned for her death, upon which her son, now King Charles III, immediately ascended to the throne.
The Queen's coffin is being prepared to lie in state in Westminster Hall for four days prior to the funeral to allow the public to pay their respects. Officials anticipate more than one million people will attend.
An official funeral service is expected to be held at Westminster Abbey, where the Queen was crowned and where she married Prince Philip in 1947. Around 2,000 people are expected, including Europe's royal families and leaders from around the world.
President Joe Biden said Friday that although he did not yet have details about the service, he would be attending. Whether former US presidents will make the guest list is unclear.
CNN reported Friday that the UK was leaving that decision to Biden.
"I am told by a couple diplomatic officials that Buckingham Palace is leaving it up to every country individually," Jeff Zeleny, CNN's chief national affairs correspondent, said, noting that former President Barack Obama invited George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Jimmy Carter to go with him to the funeral of Nelson Mandela in 2013.
"So there is protocol for having US presidents invite other presidents," he continued. "Who knows, maybe in the spirit of forgiving and giving President Biden will invite Donald Trump on Air Force One. I doubt that will happen, but I do expect some type of a bipartisan delegation."
Former President Donald Trump, for his part, was a vocal fan of the Queen, whom he met on several official state visits during his presidency. After the news of her death, Trump shared a long tribute to the Queen in a series of posts on Truth Social.
"Melania and I will always cherish our time together with the Queen, and never forget Her Majesty's generous friendship, great wisdom, and wonderful sense of humor. What a grand and beautiful lady she was—there was nobody like her!" he wrote, adding: "May God bless the Queen, may she reign forever in our hearts, and may God hold her and Prince Philip in abiding care."
Trump also shared several photos of him and the Queen smiling together during their visits.
Trump and Biden, on the other hand, may be on more hostile terms than ever after the president's address on September 1 in which he said "MAGA Republicans" represented a danger to American democracy.
While discussing whether or not Biden would invite Trump to the funeral, CNN's Jake Tapper said he thought it would be a "clever" move for the president to invite him and see if he goes.
"I don't think former President Trump would want to be subordinate on Air Force One, and I think probably he prefers his own plane anyway," Tapper said.

]]>Some of the top-requested sites are the least accessible, including US National Parks, Vancouver Island, Hawaii and Alaska. If you've ever been to British Columbia you'll notice a lot of Tesla EVs driving around, but there are only a pair of Supercharger stations on Vancouver Island in Victoria and Nanaimo. Similarly, there's only a single station in Alaska at Soldotna, and a lone six-bay facility in Honolulu. It would also make sense to install Superchargers at National Park gateways often located in remote regions.

— Tesla Charging (@TeslaCharging) September 8, 2022
Tesla has 1,469 Supercharger locations in the US, with the number of charge points varying widely per station. However, station growth has lagged behind Tesla EV sales — the latter grew 87 percent in 2021, but Supercharger installations increased just 35 percent. This could become a bigger problem soon, as the company said it will open up its Supercharger network to non-Tesla vehicles.
Installing them isn't quite as simple as throwing money around, either. Tesla recently posted a job ad for its Canadian Supercharger design team, noting that applicants require experience in site permitting, construction feasibility, utility service requests and more. The company recently told sites hosting Superchargers that they're good for business, with average monthly charging visits between 2,000 to 5,000 at locations in Vancouver, BC.

The future of Calgary's bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics will become clear this week. On Tuesday, Calgary voters will go to the polls to register their opinion on whether or not they want to host the world. The vote is technically not binding, but make no mistake, the future of the bid hangs in the balance of the results.
Calgary has been down this road before, having hosted the Winter Olympics back in 1988. The question is, does the city want to go down that road again? That has fuelled much passion and debate in the months leading up to this week's vote.
CBC Sports' Jamie Strashin examines the factors Calgarians will weigh before voting:
Calgary is a very different city than it was 30 years ago. Its economy has been hampered by historically low fuel prices and supporters of the bid have painted the 2026 Games as the economic lift Calgary needs.
"This isn't going to solve all problems, but it can be a great launching pad for us to have a purpose — to more clearly define what our economic objectives are and to really start attracting people talent in companies here around the Games or delivering on the Games. So if you look back at '88, it's precisely what it did," says Mary Moran, CEO of the Calgary 2026 bid committee.
The job of Moran's group has been to sell this bid to both city council and the citizens of Calgary. She says hosting another Olympics would allow the city to show its evolution into a world class city.
"There's a lot of activity that's happening here that's a bit of an untold story about Calgary," Moran said. "I look at this as a platform. We're on the global stage. We can tell a different story about Calgary and that's the best thing that the Games provides us with."
What is a plebiscite?
Numerous opposition groups have formed around the bid, arguing that the Olympics is the wrong idea at the wrong time.
"1988 was a great time for Calgary, but it was a completely different time," says Erin Waite, one of the organizers behind the opposition group No Calgary Olympics.
"There is a ton of talent, expertise and creativity in this city. Let's galvanize that toward a project that will do something for the next generation," Waite says. "I don't think helping a few winter athletes come to a party in 2026 for a few weeks is really the investment we should be considering."
Calgary's vote comes at time when some feel the Olympic mystique is fading, due to unwieldy hosting costs that inevitably balloon beyond initial estimates, and to the perception that the IOC is corrupt and mismanaged.
Bid supporters and the IOC organizers have worked diligently to counter this narrative. Cost forecasts this far away from the Games historically miss the mark. In the case of this bid, taxpayers are being asked to contribute $ 3 billion — a big number, but small by Olympic standards. The lower cost projections stem from the IOC's efforts to make hosting the Games more attractive and affordable. In Calgary's case, many of the big ticket items, like a potential new NHL-size arena, have been sidelined, with the focus instead on rehabbing existing venues.
Watch Jamie Strashin bring you up to date on the plebiscite:
"These Games make sense. The Games make sense for Calgary. Calgary makes sense for the Games. There are many opportunities and risks. Where we stand, we don't see them because you have the culture of hosting events. You have done the Games before," says the IOC's Christophe Dubi, who has frequently visited Calgary in recent months.
Dubi says he hopes Calgarians are aware of the IOC's leaner approach.
"You can have different opinions, but at the same time the promoters of the Games have to provide information. This is how this referendum will be won," Dubi says.
Calgary city council's next move will obviously be guided by this vote. On recent Olympic-related votes leading up to Tuesday's, council has been divided about whether to keep going.
So what's the magic number that will push council to go ahead?
Moran says she'd like to see 50 per cent or more of voters support an Olympic bid. "But you can also win the Games with a strong plebiscite. And so you know, the stretch goal for me would be closer to 60."
The No side hopes for an equally strong result. "I would love to see a good turnout and a strong no vote percentage," Waite says. "That's the easiest thing to respond to for our elected officials. No question it gets tougher if that percentage is more of a split vote."
If Calgary does choose to put a bid forward for the 2026 Winter Olympics, the IOC will announce a winner in June.

BMW’s display at the 2018 Chicago Auto Show was bewildering. Among the massive lineup of vehicles, the company had at least four obviously different models that were all connected by a common thread. From biggest to smallest, the BMW had a bunch of fastbacks—the 640i GT, X6, 330i GT, and X4—on display. To be sure, having multiple options across a body style is no different than, say, the Volvo XC40, XC60, and XC90, or Audi’s Q3, Q5, and Q7. Automakers churn out different-sized cars for different market segments, and there’s nothing odd about that.
But the BMW lineup stuck with me enough to bring it up in conversation later with Ars’ automotive editor Jonathan Gitlin. BMW is taking this approach to fill automotive niches not even recognized by most other carmakers, and its recent fastbacks are proof. For all that unites them—those four doors and a sloping rear-hatch body style—there’s plenty to differentiate. Size, for one thing: simple math tells us the 640i GT and X6 are obviously bigger than the 330i GT and X4. So we decided to review as many as we could to see if the world really needs all the fastback options.
I started with the 640i xDrive GT last March and came away impressed. The GT truly drove like a grand touring car, offering a quiet and posh ride coupled with excellent performance and handling but with a price tag starting well north of $ 70,000.

Christine Blasey Ford’s attorneys say they need more time to decide whether Ford will speak to the Senate Judiciary Committee about her claim that Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in the 1980s.
In a letter to the committee cited by CNN on Friday night, Ford’s lawyer, Debra Katz, scolded the committee for taking what she called a “cavalier” attitude toward “a sexual assault survivor who has been doing her best to cooperate with the Committee.”See the rest of the story at Business Insider

]]>Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani will host his Russian and Turkish counterparts Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday. The three leaders are engaged in the so-called Astana process, which aims to de-escalate violence in Syria to facilitate a political transition and a sustainable end to the seven-year-old war in the country. It is the third meeting of its kind and is expected to be dominated by discussion relating to Syria’s Idlib governorate.
Located in western Syria, Idlib is the last major stronghold of anti-government armed groups, many of which are hardcore jihadists. The region is dominated by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, an Al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group. The total number of extremist forces in the area is estimated at between 10,000 and 60,000, among a population of some 3.5 million people.
The meeting in Iran takes place amid disagreement as to whether the jihadists – who used the governorate to launch regular attacks on other parts of Syria – can be defeated there without a major military operation. The Syrian government seems determined to carry out such a campaign, involving air support from Russia and ground support from Iranian paramilitaries and military advisers.
Turkey, which borders Idlib, objects to this course of action, claiming it would cause a major exodus of civilian population into Turkey, which could be used by jihadists to infiltrate the country.
If such an offensive was successful in Idlib, it would result in the defeat of the last major jihadist force in Syria. However, it would not bring an end to divisions in the country. Large parts in the north-east are controlled by US-backed Kurdish militias, and an American military base is still present on the Syria-Jordan border. Neither would it resolve Israel’s conflict with Iranian forces on Syrian territory. But it would eliminate a force, for which an end to violence and negotiations with Damascus is not an option. Proponents of the mooted operation believe that this outcome would give an impetus to UN-backed peace talks in Geneva.
“I believe that this meeting in Tehran will prepare the international and regional atmosphere for the upcoming military operation in Syria. After the Syrian Army takes all of Idlib, we will start a countdown towards the end of the Syrian crisis,” said Jamal Wakeem, professor of history and international relations at Lebanese University in Beirut.
Turkey’s concerns over a military confrontation at its border is understandable, but Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu’s counter-proposal to somehow separate terrorists and civilians through intelligence work does not seem very practical. The jihadists had several years to prepare for a possible attack and have a record of using civilian populations as de facto human shields. Every successful siege in Syria, including the US and Kurdish attack of Raqqa, resulted in heavy losses of civilian lives and damage to civilian infrastructure, while US promises to separate jihadists from so-called moderate rebels proved futile.
Russia and Iran will likely try to persuade Turkey in Tehran that an offensive in Idlib is necessary, while trying to assuage Ankara’s concerns, according to Huseyin Bagci, professor of international relations at Ankara’s Middle East Technical University.
“The Turkish government is trying to get security for those radical groups which Turkey supported in the past. So a new deal… will be on how those people would be evacuated from Idlib,” he said.
As the preparations for an offensive are underway, there has been vocal protest coming from Washington. The US seems convinced that Syrian troops will be unable to refrain from using chemical weapons in Idlib. It has threatened a military retaliation similar to the one in April during a Syrian attack in Douma. US envoy to the UN Nikki Haley went so far as to attribute an attack to Damascus before it even happened.
“It happened in the past when the Syrian government was accused of using chemical weapons at a time when the Syrian government appeared to be winning and had no reason to use chemical weapons,” noted journalist and author Adel Darwish.
The Russian military previously warned that a false-flag chemical-weapons attack was being prepared by Jabhat Fateh al-Sham with the help of the British intelligence. US Defense Secretary James Mattis said the US has ‘zero intelligence’ on the possession of chemical weapons by the “opposition” in Syria, or evidence of their use by anyone but Damascus. He seems to be contradicting previous statements by US officials, which explicitly accused Hayat Tahrir al-Sham of using chemical weapons.
What State once said about rebels using chemical weapons:
"Tactics of ISIS, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other violent extremist groups include the use of suicide bombers, kidnapping, small and heavy arms, improvised explosive devices, and chemical weapons." https://t.co/2sWluzkVc7
— Max Abrahms (@MaxAbrahms) September 5, 2018
The US has attacked Syrian forces in response to the alleged use of chemical weapons twice already. If a third such offensive is anything like the previous two, it would be unlikely to disrupt an operation in Idlib in any serious way. A more large-scale attack, however, would bring the US much closer to a military confrontation with Russia, whose military personnel are embedded with Syrian units.
A day after Nikki Haley suggested Syrian could “go the route of taking over Syria,” the US ambassador issued statement calling on Assad to halt attack on Civikians in Idlib. pic.twitter.com/JVKrkCXeYL
— columlynch (@columlynch) September 5, 2018
Over the past few days, Washington’s threat against Damascus seemed to be shifting focus from chemical weapons to any major offensive in Idlib. This will certainly be a major factor during the Tehran talks, but the determination of the US to intervene in Syria without a formal pretext remains under question.
