If you thought State of Decay 2 was getting a bit stale even with a little DLC, relief is at hand. Undead Labs has released its expected free Zedhunter update, and it promises some significant changes to the gameplay in addition to extra missions — and one might seem familiar. Most notably, it now includes crossbows. You can pull off your best Daryl-from-The-Walking-Dead impression and pick off zombies without drawing attention, wasting ammo (it’s recoverable) or putting up with the occasional jam. You’ll find three swords and three knives in case that crossbow isn’t enough.
You can also play with your stats in multiple ways. To start, you can re-spec skills. So long as you’ve reached 7 stars in a core skill, you can remove a specialization to choose another, albeit at the cost of much slower experience gains for that skill. For much faster (if temporary) improvements, there are also new “plague consumables” like a Zedrenaline boost to health and stamina. There are also new quirks like hygiene (it’s harder to tip over into a full-fledged infection) and recycling (a regular stream of community parts).
There are more additions coming in the long run, such as a new difficulty level and an opportunity to “return to Trumbull Valley” in 2019. Undead Labs wants to keep the game fresh, in other words, and it doesn’t insist on charging gamers for the privilege.

This week saw another big PUBG update land on Xbox One, complete with Miramar upgrades.
It wasn’t that long since Bluehole Inc and Microsoft released the new map on consoles.
And now a new patch has been launched, aimed at improving the experience, among other things.
The development team have confirmed that the Oasis in the northern area of the map has expanded, and should provide better encounters.
It should also be noted that player reporting should now be enabled, giving Battle Royale fans the chance to report a team kill on Xbox One.
Explaining the tweaks, a new message from the development team outlined some of the goals of the new patch.
“Recently we shared a dev letter that gave a preview of some upcoming performance improvements we’ll be implementing in PUBG for Xbox One,” the development message reads.
“We’ll need time to deliver on all of those improvements, but in the meantime we’ve got a small patch here with some bug fixes, improvements to Miramar, and a new teamkiller reporting function.”
You can read about the other optimisations and tweaks made to PUBG on Xbox One, below:

A new State of Decay 2 update has been released today, a whopping 20GB patch which is available to download on Xbox One.
This is an automatic update you will be prompted to install upon logging in, and it will not affect your saved game.
Microsoft say this is just the first of a new wave of update, which will continue to bring additional content to State of Decay 2.
Some of the most noticeable changes in this patch include stability, performance, and multiplayer improvements.
Though as you can probably guess by the hefty 20GB download Microsoft have also included a huge amount of smaller quality of life fixes throughout the game.
A message from Jeff Strain, Studio Head of Undead Labs, explains: “Hey fellow survivors, I just wanted to drop in a quick personal note on behalf of the development team to thank you for your support and for jumping in with us on State of Decay 2.
“This patch today is just the beginning — we have big plans for State of Decay 2, and we’re humbled and appreciative to you for giving us the opportunity to make those big plans happen. Keep playing, keep surviving (or not, as sometimes happens), and stay tuned for more good stuff.”
The 1.2 patch features significant improvements related to:

Enlarge / Kepler was made to find planets, but it’s found other uses. (credit: Kepler)
The Kepler planet-hunting telescope was designed to do one thing: gather data from a single portion of the sky often enough to catch rare, brief events. The events it was looking for were slight dips in light that happened as a planet passed in between its host star and Earth. But it captured other transient events as well. Some of these other events were supernovae—the explosion of massive stars—and Kepler captured two just as the explosion burst through their surface.
But at least one of the brief events Kepler observed was so odd it wasn’t originally recognized as a supernova. It was only after the observatory’s data was released to the entire research community that people started proposing that something so bright was most likely a supernova. Now, researchers are offering an analysis of why this event looked so strange.
With their typical flair for the dramatic, the researchers have termed this event KSN 2015K. As mentioned above, it looked different enough from other supernovae that it wasn’t picked up by a standard analysis. In addition, the researchers found that the same event was spotted by a couple of surveys dedicated to identifying supernovae at an early stage. Neither of those surveys identified it, either.

THE number of children under the age of 10 needing hospital treatment because of tooth decay is twice as high as the number needing help for a broken arm, according to new analysis.![]()
Experts at the University of Illinois’ Chicago College of Dentistry, USA, found that grape seed extract can help to strengthen the tissue behind a tooth’s enamel.
The scientist claims that the breakthrough could prevent patients from needing fillings, and also boost the strength of the fillings themselves.
Dr Rob Wain, UK dentist, said the study could give people the best chance yet of keeping their teeth for life.
Grape seed extract – a byproduct of the red wine making industry which can be purchased from health food shops – has long been linked to health benefits such as improved heart function and better circulation.
Now the new study’s lead author Ana Bedran-Russo, associate professor of restorative dentistry, said the extract can also be used to increase the strength of dentin, ‘which comprises the majority of the calcified extracellular tissue of teeth, forming the layer just beneath the hard external enamel.’
Improving that part of the tooth won’t just prevent decay but it can also increase the longevity of composite-resin fillings, which currently have a lifespan of just five to seven years, experts have revealed.
Dr Bedran-Russon, who published the findings in the Journal of Dental Research, said: “Dentin is mostly made of collagen, the main structural protein in skin and other connective tissues.
“Resins have to bind to the dentin, but the area between the two, or the interface, is a weak point, causing restorations to breakdown.
“When fillings fail, decay forms around it and the seal is lost.
“We want to reinforce the interface, which will make the resin bond better to the dentin. The interface can be changed through the use of new natural materials.
“The stability of the interface is key for the durability of such adhesive joints, and hence, the life of the restoration and minimising tooth loss.”
Dr Bedran-Russo explained how that combinations of plant-based oligomeric proanthocyanidins – which are flavonoids found in most foods and vegetables, including extracts from grape seed – and interlocking resins, bond to dentin more securely, possibly preventing tooth decay.
Dr Rob Wain, founder of the Dovetail Bespoke Dental Solutions in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, welcomed the research.
He said better bonding ability will help restore not just broken teeth, but shattered patient confidence.
Dr Wain said: “The result of this new study improves our chances of being able to rebuild teeth with porcelain and resin restorations, when teeth are very broken down.
“In these instances where people have run into severe problems with their teeth, they typically suffer an extreme loss of confidence and become quite withdrawn.
“Now this research suggests we’ll have a better chance of rebuilding patients when things have gone horribly wrong.
“It could be another string to the dentist’s bow when it comes to saving teeth, rather than having to lose them.”
Dr Wain said he suspects the breakthrough could also be particularly useful in patients whose teeth have been dissolved through acid reflux.
He explained: “We often see cases where people have worn their teeth down through an excess of acid reflux from their stomach.
“It occurs in patients who have eating disorders like bulimia or anorexia, but we also see it with people who simply suffer indigestion over a long period of time.
“There’s also a condition called ‘GORD’, aka Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. When people lie horizontally at night during sleep, they get acid reflux and it dissolves their teeth without them knowing about it.
“The tooth’s enamel is eroded and it exposes the dentine underneath. And it can be extremely challenging to then glue repairs to that dentine.
“Anything that can help to make this glue stronger is going to be of enormous benefit.
“The principal we use nowadays is that we try to rebuild teeth by bonding to them – glueing back the bits that are missing. You might have lost it from tooth decay or walking into a door.
“In the past we would have drilled teeth down so that we can put crowns onto them.
“But by using glue instead there’s more tooth remaining for the future and the remaining tooth is actually much stronger.
“You’re giving people a better chance of keeping their teeth for life.”
TOOTH decay could be fought with the seeds from red grapes – according to new research.![]()
As all good startup stories begin, Mosley’s inspiration hit out of nowhere. Laid off from work one year out of college, she moved back in with her parents in a leafy town outside the city. Shuttling into the heart of the metropolis on the suburban rail line, she was stunned by the contrasts in the urban landscape flashing past her window. Mansions with swimming pools and manicured gardens one minute, and “all of a sudden you’re in North Philly, and the backs of houses are falling down,” she says. And as all good startup stories continue, the young entrepreneur thought, “There’s something wrong here. What can be done about it?”
What she did was create a platform that pulls together open municipal data for real estate developers. Sounds wonky, but her FixList platform — described as the Zillow of redevelopment — could help America’s real estate and construction markets remedy a problem plaguing metropolitan areas throughout the country: urban blight. FixList pools city-held data on neighborhood tax delinquency, vacancy rates, construction history, zoning changes and some 20 other indices to model and score properties developers should snap up for redevelopment. It doesn’t dig into the financials, but if a property scores high on FixList, it’s rife for refurbishment. And, in a place like Philadelphia, where roughly 10 percent of the city’s 600,000 properties lie vacant, a dose of data science may be just the thing to close the gap between an obvious problem and those who can fix it. Mosley is “a great person on to a great idea with a great vision,” says Rick Nucci, a Philadelphia startup guru (he co-founded Boomi and Guru and leads Philly Startup Leaders, a group working to promote local entrepreneurship) — and Mosley’s mentor for the past year. By attacking a direct and identifiable business problem, he says, FixList “has massive potential.” She was recently announced Innovator of the Year by women’s group Rad Girls during Philly Tech Week.
Before [Mosley’s] FixList, research involved “cobbling together little bits of information” from several government websites.
Since the product launched in mid-2016, over 30 clients, mostly local developers, have paid premium fees to access the data service (depending on the organization’s size and the amount of data required, monthly fees run to $ 100 or more) and report that it has helped increase their property redevelopment pipelines. Mosley plans to expand the platform to two other cities this year and reach more than 15 cities in five years’ time. And her vision extends beyond development: Mosley flags the potential for real estate agencies, appraisers and even government agencies to make use of the data, and adding more indices could help nonprofits use FixList to monitor neighborhood socioeconomic outcomes related to housing.
While spotting a run-down section of a city shouldn’t require input from a data scientist, it can be surprisingly difficult for developers to home in on properties that are most in need. That’s because developers often build up a familiarity with a particular neighborhood, says Angie Williamson of Philly Office Retail, a real estate development group with a focus on Northwest Philadelphia — and a FixList early adopter. For redevelopers to identify properties in other neighborhoods, “it’s basically word of mouth or if you happen to be driving by,” she says. Before FixList, research involved “cobbling together little bits of information” from several government websites. Mosley’s platform “allows us to do legwork before [hitting the streets on foot],” Williamson adds.

So far, FixList is still a two-person show: Mosley has a business partner who acts as CTO, leaving her to run business strategy and creative direction — as well as most of the data science efforts and some front-end technical development. But she’s been a jack-of-all-trades all her life, combining an interest in math and science with a creative streak (which she traces to her art-teacher grandmother). While studying engineering at Northwestern University, she applied her technical know-how to creative projects in industrial and product design. After getting laid off from her first job out of college, as a creative consultant at Philly-based startup Ticketleap, her interest in the built environment eventually led to a job crunching real estate data at PhiladelphiaCity Hall — a post she talked her way into after asking a Visitor Center volunteer what the city was doing about urban blight.
One year postlaunch, this startup story is still in the early chapters. The product was developed with money from Mosley’s own pocket (savings she set aside working at city hall), and with no official marketing spend, most of FixList’s sales have been drummed up through Mosley’s networking. “She’s setting herself up for success because she’s truly figuring out how to tap into people who can help her,” Nucci says. The company was recently accepted into a local accelerator program.
Raising early rounds of capital can be challenging in a city like Philadelphia, Nucci says, as there are fewer local VC funds compared to tech hubs like New York, Boston or the Bay Area. But “it’s a really cool time in Philly,” he’s quick to add, as the city is attracting top tech talent fueling the startup scene. Plus, there may be no better city than Philadelphia for a startup focused on helping to cure urban blight. Its next target is Baltimore, after which any number of American cities could benefit from a FixList face-lift.

The Standard Model of physics, which explains the properties and interactions of the fundamental particles, does a phenomenal job with the things it gets right, and there’s nothing that it obviously gets wrong. But that’s not to say it doesn’t have its issues. There are a variety of rather fundamental topics that it doesn’t cover at all, like why neutrinos have a mass and what constitutes dark matter.
A variety of extensions of the Standard Model deal with these topics, but they’re entirely theoretical—we don’t have experimental evidence for them. This week, one of the most exquisitely sensitive tests yet to look for validation of alternative versions of the Standard Model has been reported, and it has turned up blank. The test had to be sensitive, as it was looking for a radioactive decay with a half-life at least 15 orders of magnitude longer than the age of the Universe.
The issue being tested has to do with one of the more notable missing pieces of the Standard Model. There’s obviously a lot more matter than antimatter present in our Universe, and the Standard Model gives few hints as to why that should be, since it mostly treats matter and antimatter as functionally equivalent. A number of extensions have been proposed that do produce a matter-filled Universe, but many of them rely on a specific and peculiar idea about neutrinos.
