There are vast reserves of croplands in Siberia, Russia.

  • Investing in Russia after the war with Ukraine could present a surpising upside, said an investor.
  • That's thanks to vast farmlands in Siberia, said Cheah Cheng Hye, co-CIO of Value Partners Group.
  • Chinese investors were already snapping up farmland in Siberia before the war.

Russia may be in the thick of war now — but investing in it may "surprise on the upside" after the conflict with Ukraine ends, a Hong Kong-based fund manager said at the Forbes Global CEO Conference in Singapore on Monday.

"All these vast lands they have in Siberia will be the biggest, most productive farmlands in the world in the next three decades. They will be a food superpower," said Cheah Cheng Hye, co-chief investment officer of Value Partners Group, an asset management firm that manages about $ 7 billion in assets.

Climate change has been negatively impacting crop yields, nutritional quality of major cereals, and livestock productivity. But Siberia is home to some of the world's largest reserves of idle cropland with potential for huge farms, wrote agriculture experts Maarten Elferink and Florian Schierhorn in The Diplomat in 2019.

"Russia could be the key winner of global warming," Cheah said. Over two-thirds of Value Partners' clients are based in China and Hong Kong.

Cheah was speaking about unexpected investing opportunities that could "surprise on the upside."

"Right now, Russia is not good news for investors but look longer-term out," Cheah said.

While Cheah's recommendation may seem like an extreme contrarian trade, Siberia is a huge resource play for investors.

Siberia is a vast region — accounting for about three-quarters of Russia's land area — and home to wide swathes of oil and gas fields and farmlands.

Even before the war, investments from China were pouring into Siberia, with at least 865,000 acres of farmland — or 16% of Siberian land used for farming — sold to or leased as of November 2019 by Chinese citizens, BBC's Russian service reported, using state land register data.

Moreover, China has not condemned Moscow over the Ukraine war. In February, China approved wheat imports from all regions in Russia, presenting an alternative market for the major exporter of the grain. Trade between China and Russia has surged 31% in the first eight months of 2022.

Berlin vows to finally crack down on Arab criminal gangs that have plagued city for DECADES https://briefnews.eu/berlin-vows-to-finally-crack-down-on-arab-criminal-gangs-that-have-plagued-city-for-decades/ https://briefnews.eu/berlin-vows-to-finally-crack-down-on-arab-criminal-gangs-that-have-plagued-city-for-decades/#respond Thu, 29 Nov 2018 23:31:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/berlin-vows-to-finally-crack-down-on-arab-criminal-gangs-that-have-plagued-city-for-decades/

Seized by fears of being labeled xenophobic, Berlin officials have allowed a parallel world to emerge in Germany’s capital – one inhabited by criminal gangs of Middle Eastern origin. But is it too late for a crackdown?

After years of inaction, Berlin law enforcement authorities are finally taking the growing issue of migrant gangs seriously. The city’s government on Monday announced a crackdown on migrant criminal gangs, unveiling a five-point plan which they said would help tackle the issue. Their new crime fighting strategy includes enhanced cooperation between police and the prosecutor’s office, as well as social welfare and youth services. Together they hope to crowdsource information-gathering on gang activities.

Other measures will involve harsher punishments for minor violations committed by gang members and a system of youth crime prevention, which is designed to help young gang members avoid becoming career criminals.

Ethnic clans

The exact number of the gangs or of their membership is apparently unclear. However, around a dozen such groups are known to German police. A report by the Tagesspiegel daily claims that there are several “Arab clans” that, together, comprise some 200 members. However, there may in fact be more, as members are usually extremely tight-lipped about their criminal ties.

Commonly known as the “Arab clans,” these criminal groups in fact come from various backgrounds but are all of Middle Eastern origin. The list of gangs known to police includes Palestinian gangs as well as groups consisting of Turkish Kurds and refugees that fled the Lebanese Civil War, Germany’s Focus magazine reports.

The gangs are also reported to maintain ties with their countries of origin. Its members, who are often already third generation migrants, still identify themselves not as Germans but as Arabs, the daily added.

Parallel society

Over the decades, the gangs have created a parallel world in the German capital as they built their vast criminal networks consisting of numerous shady businesses financed through ill-gotten gains. Some criminal groups have been active in Berlin for almost half a century, as their first members arrived in Germany in the 1970s.

In July, Berlin police discovered and confiscated as many as 77 real estate assets belonging to just one such family, which were all bought with criminal money. The confiscated properties were worth a combined €9.3 million ($ 10.5 million).

The gangs are usually involved in the drug trade as well as robberies. Several such groups were behind a number of recent high-profile cases that made headlines in Germany and beyond.

High-profile crimes

In December 2014, five members of a criminal gang broke into two jewellery stores in a shopping center located in Western Berlin not far from the Berlin Zoo and the famous Tiergarten Park. Armed with axes and machetes, the masked robbers stormed the facilities in broad daylight, pepper-spraying shoppers and injuring 13 people. They managed to steal Rolex watches and jewelry worth €817,000 ($ 923,050) before fleeing the scene.

Although the raiders were later caught, the police still failed to find the valuables they stole, German media reported. In March 2017, another ethnic gang stole an extremely rare commemorative coin in a daring, middle-of-the-night heist that targeted the world-famous, UNESCO-listed Bode Museum in Berlin.

The coin they stole was known as the ‘Big Maple Leaf’ and was issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2007. The coin is reportedly worth €920,000 (around $ 1 million) in its current form. The 100kg of gold, however, would sell for roughly €3.7 million ($ 4.2 million) at current market value. The coin has not been found yet, with the police believing that the culprits might have actually melted it down.

More recently, German police report a spike in gang violence, as rival ‘families’ have been launching attacks against each other for weeks. In one such attack, a notorious gang member and repeat offender was shot down near the now-defunct Berlin Tempelhof Airport. Police then had to guard his funeral in order to prevent any further violence. Notably, the ceremony was attended by some 2,000 people, according to local media reports.

Fear of ‘xenophobic’ label?

One of the hurdles facing German law enforcement is the risk of being labeled as xenophobic for going after migrant groups – even if they’re criminals.

An association of Berlin criminal defense lawyers has even questioned the notion that “clan crime” exists, arguing that the term is too vague.

Arab crime clans in Germany sweep up new members from refugee ranks – report

Hannes Honecker, the head of the association, said that speaking about “clan crime” is taking a page from right-wing populists like Alternative for Germany (AfD), a right-wing political party that is gaining traction in Germany. He added that such “depreciative” rhetoric conjures the picture of “large homogenous … criminal families, which do not exist.”

Meanwhile, according to Focus, the German police have long preferred not to systematically target the ethnic gangs, treating their crimes as isolated cases instead, precisely out of fear of being labeled xenophobic.

But as the criminal gangs continue to consolidate their presence in Berlin, Germany may have to put aside political correctness and opt instead for safer streets.

Tell Me a Story

(Or “The Play’s the Thing,” originally published on The Game Beat, April 28, 2017.)

If you are connected to video games professionally, you probably heard some sort of discussion over Ian Bogost’s provocatively headlined Atlantic piece “Video Games Are Better Without Stories.” The actual piece is a bit more restrained than the headline implies, more arguing that games should get past the “cinema envy” that is driving a lot of linear character vignettes these days. The argument nonetheless got a bit of pushback from across the industry.

The whole brouhaha got me thinking about how we, as journalists and critics, handle the presence of story in games. It’s been said that a story in a video game is like a story in pornography—it doesn’t matter how good it is, but you notice if it isn’t there. That might be a bit glib, but it’s also probably true of the way most people play the most popular games these days. For a lot of players, the story is just meaningless context that can largely be ignored.

Debate over migrant ‘caravan’ ignores the real problem: Decades of destabilizing US foreign policy https://briefnews.eu/debate-over-migrant-caravan-ignores-the-real-problem-decades-of-destabilizing-us-foreign-policy/ https://briefnews.eu/debate-over-migrant-caravan-ignores-the-real-problem-decades-of-destabilizing-us-foreign-policy/#respond Wed, 24 Oct 2018 20:30:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/debate-over-migrant-caravan-ignores-the-real-problem-decades-of-destabilizing-us-foreign-policy/ With the US-bound caravan of Central American migrants being used as a political football ahead of the midterm elections, there’s one factor receiving scant attention: The role the US itself has played in destabilizing the region.

US President Donald Trump has condemned the migrants, many of which began their journey in Honduras, calling some of them “hardened criminals” and suggesting that “unknown Middle Easterners” are among the some 14,000 thousand people making the long trek towards the US border. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has also sounded the alarm, calling it a “moment of crisis” for the US.

There’s is no doubt that this is indeed a moment of crisis.

Already migrants have arrived in their droves at the Guatemala-Mexico border, with some breaking through fences and crossing into Mexico where they clashed with riot police. Others are reportedly attempting to cross into Mexico by river using makeshift rafts and ropes.

The public debate around immigration in the US revolves almost solely around ‘what to do’ about the migrants as they approach the border. One side is willing to receive them as refugees with open arms, while the other feels no obligation to accommodate those who would enter illegally, regardless of the circumstances in which they fled their home countries — but what’s missing from the political and mainstream media conversation is that the migrants didn’t just materialize out of thin air: They are coming from countries that have, time and again, been destabilized by US foreign policy.

Speaking to RT, ANSWER Coalition Organizer Gloria la Riva said that US policies of “war, occupation, sanctions and drug trafficking” in the region have “seriously affected” the countries from which the migrants are travelling and are “forcing people to leave”.

Indeed, for decades, the US has treated Latin and Central American nations like colonies rather than neighbors, intervening in their internal politics, shifting the balance of power with money, weapons and political pressure in order to serve US geopolitical interests — rarely, if ever, sparing a thought for the human consequences. It would take too long to list all the many injustices perpetrated in the region by decades of anti-democratic and neoliberal US foreign policy, but given that the majority of migrants now making their way to the US border came from Honduras, that is a good place to start.

In 2009, under former President Barack Obama, the US tacitly backed a military coup against the democratically elected President Manuel Zelaya of Honduras, an event from which the country is still reeling today. Instead of strongly condemning the coup, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton advocated for new elections.

Zelaya had implemented some moderate reforms, including a minimum wage — but was seen as too much of a Chavez-style socialist for Washington’s liking. He had also enraged the elite by promising to settle long-running land disputes between poor farmers and the powerful agribusiness industry.

A brutal crackdown against Zelaya’s supporters soon began, with protesters who took to the streets demanding his return getting beaten, tortured and jailed.

New elections were boycotted by many Hondurans as mass protests raged on. Lo’ and behold, the new US-endorsed right-wing government introduced pro-business policies and moved to sell off the country’s national resources, making it a death trap for environmental activists. In the years after the coup, Honduras was listed as the most violent country in the world that was not an official warzone. But US mainstream media showed little interest explaining the Obama administration’s role in all of this.

Fast forward almost a decade, as the Trump administration backed the re-election of President Juan Orlando Hernández, who has presided over corruption scandals and human rights abuses. The vote was marred by widespread reports of election fraud from the UN and the European Union.

Honduran human rights activist Dunia Montoya recently told Al Jazeera that the US is “responsible for the situation” in Honduras.

“What is happening in Honduras is the accumulation of the consequences of legitimizing a fraudulent government. They provoked this mass migration from Honduras.”

Montoya said that Trump’s threat to cut off aid to Honduras “does not alarm” the people who are fleeing because the aid “never makes its way into their hands” anyway.

As the Trump administration ramps up anti-immigrant rhetoric, Democrats are eager to play the role of the compassionate liberals, pretending – or perhaps truly believing – that the problem is really nothing to do with them.

But as we have seen for decades, cruel and devastating foreign policy coupled with seemingly racist immigration laws is not just a Republican problem, but a bipartisan one. La Riva cited former President Bill Clinton’s 1996 ‘Responsible Immigration Act’ which she said was a “calculated, racist” and “anti-Latin America” policy that made it easier for people who crossed the southern border in crisis to be deported, while people who enter the US from Europe but overstay their visas were allowed to remain and appeal the decision.

El Salvador and Guatemala, two other countries from which the migrants are now fleeing, have also been on the receiving end of US foreign policy adventurism for decades, as Washington propped up repressive dictatorships, overthrew democratically elected governments and fueled civil wars, all in an effort to ensure the ability to exploit this vulnerable region and its resources.

From the CIA-engineered coup which removed Guatemalan president Jacobo Arbenz in 1954, an event which plunged the country into decades of civil war, to the ‘anti-Communist’ Reagan-funded death squads in El Salvador in the 1980s, the US has actively sought to squash efforts to build real democracy in the region.

While Democrats and Republicans continue to lash out at each other and squabble over how to deal with the aftermath, they ignore the causes. Instead of using the migrant caravan as a political football, they would be better off reconsidering the decades of unjust policies, supported wholeheartedly by both parties, which have led to these humanitarian crises in the first place.

How ‘the Forrest Gump of Republican politics’ Brett Kavanaugh became the Supreme Court’s most embattled justice in decades, after controversy over sexual misconduct allegations https://briefnews.eu/how-the-forrest-gump-of-republican-politics-brett-kavanaugh-became-the-supreme-courts-most-embattled-justice-in-decades-after-controversy-over-sexual-misconduct-allegations/ https://briefnews.eu/how-the-forrest-gump-of-republican-politics-brett-kavanaugh-became-the-supreme-courts-most-embattled-justice-in-decades-after-controversy-over-sexual-misconduct-allegations/#respond Sun, 07 Oct 2018 11:35:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-the-forrest-gump-of-republican-politics-brett-kavanaugh-became-the-supreme-courts-most-embattled-justice-in-decades-after-controversy-over-sexual-misconduct-allegations/ brett kavanaughChip Somodevilla/Getty Images

  • The Senate voted 50-48 on Saturday to confirm President Donald Trump’s nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, to the Supreme Court.
  • Kavanaugh’s nomination appeared to be in jeopardy for weeks, after multiple women came forward to publicly accuse him of sexual misconduct in high school and college. Kavanaugh has denied the allegations in statements and testimony.
  • But several key senators on Friday announced they intended to vote for him on Saturday regardless, paving the way for his confirmation.

After several tumultuous weeks of uncertainty, Judge Brett Kavanaugh has been confirmed to the Supreme Court on Saturday.

The Senate voted 50-48 on Saturday to confirm Kavanaugh, after several days of speculation over how key senators viewed as “swing votes” would decide. Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine and Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia were pivotal in confirming Kavanaugh, voting “yes,” while Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski opposed his confirmation.

But the multiple sexual misconduct allegations lodged against Kavanaugh in recent weeks still hangs over Saturday’s news, prompting furious backlash from the protesters who for weeks lobbied Collins, Manchin, and other senators to vote against Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

Christine Blasey Ford, 51, accused a teenaged Kavanaugh of forcing himself on her at a high school party in the early 1980s. Deborah Ramirez, a former Yale University classmate of Kavanaugh’s, said Kavanaugh exposed himself to her without her consent at a dorm-room party during his freshman 1983-84 school year.

Kavanaugh categorically denied Ford and Ramirez’s accounts in separate statements before delivering a fiery testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee. An additional FBI background check into the allegations concluded less than a week later with no corroboration for the accounts.

Kavanaugh was born and bred in the Washington, DC area and has a long history in conservative circles. Top Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin once called Kavanaugh the “Forrest Gump of Republican politics,” because he was present for so many key moments in modern political history.

As the final vote for Kavanaugh’s confirmation approaches, here’s a look at how the born-and-bred conservative rose to become the court’s most pivotal nomination in decades:

On August 27, 1998, Topeka, Kansas became Topikachu for one day—a ceremonial renaming to celebrate the US arrival of a new video game franchise, Pokémon. While popular previously in Japan, the franchise’s impact has been felt in the US ever since. To remember this gaming landmark, we’re resurfacing this classic Ars tale of franchise fandom over Labor Day Weekend. The piece re-emerged once before in February 2016 for the 20th anniversary of the original release of Pokémon Red and Green in Japan, and it originally ran in October 2013.

I’ve been playing Pokémon games since I was 13, and I’ve felt just a little too old for the games pretty much the entire time. Having an eight-year-old brother slavishly devoted to the games, and the anime, and the trading cards, told Young Andrew all he needed to know about the age of kids who were into Pokémon. Even once he (er, me) finally gave in to his curiosity and began playing Pokémon Blue (via the No$ gmb emulator on the computer), he only played it with headphones in and the door to his bedroom closed. That experience set the tone for the next decade-plus of Pokémon playing: done in secret, kept to myself, a source of shame.

I’ve never watched the anime. I don’t collect the cards. I don’t play the weird offshoot games like Pokémon Snap, Pokémon Rumble, or Hey You, Pikachu! or whatever. My possession of Pokémon merchandise is limited to a handful of figurines I picked up when I went to Japan in 2010. But every time a new game in the main RPG series has come out, I’ve been there. The games have been with me through childhood into adolescence and adulthood, and while they’ve changed (and I’ve changed) the things I enjoy about them haven’t.

This was the most 'romantic' royal wedding in decades – the answer will shock you https://briefnews.eu/this-was-the-most-romantic-royal-wedding-in-decades-the-answer-will-shock-you/ https://briefnews.eu/this-was-the-most-romantic-royal-wedding-in-decades-the-answer-will-shock-you/#respond Sun, 29 Jul 2018 16:57:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-was-the-most-romantic-royal-wedding-in-decades-the-answer-will-shock-you/

The wedding of Princess Diana, who died at the age of 36, and Prince Charles, 69, was watched by 750 million people worldwide.

While their marriage ultimately ended in divorce in 1996, no one was to know it would not be a success.

In fact, Diana and Charles’ wedding was the most “romantic” in generations, according to a body language expert.

Judi James told Express.co.uk Diana and Charles’ wedding was “by far the most romantic” in generations.

According to her analysis, the 1981 wedding was more romantic than both the 2011 wedding of Kate Middleton, 36, and Prince William, 46, as well as the 2018 wedding of Meghan Markle. 36, and Prince Harry, 33.

She said: “We look at this marriage in retrospect and we get a very clear view of the disaster it always threatened to become.

“But in the context of the time the wedding happened it was by far the most romantic event of that and the following generations of royals.

“Two factors created that sense of romance and neither would apply to any modern royal marriage: firstly there was the belief that their marriage would have to be for keeps.

“During the build-up to the wedding the mantra was that Charles could never ever divorce.

“Like the Queen and Prince Philip these two would make old bones together whatever, so the public assumed he had chosen a woman he knew he could love forever.

“Then there was the archaic but ‘perfect’ romantic storyline that had been a feature of romantic fiction from the Brontes to DuMaurier to Bridget Jones’s Diary.

“Charles was the rather crusty older bachelor with inherited power and wealth and Diana was the innocent and rather naive young girl who won his heart.

“Every face-softening expression or tender hand-strokes from Charles were cooed over as a sign that he’d succumbed to love.

“And of course Diana transformed in front of our eyes from gauche, shy kindergarden assistant to a beautiful princess, just like every princess in every fairy tale.”

Earlier this year, Judi analysed the body language at the wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.

She revealed that, while Meghan maintained extreme “poise” throughout the service, Harry’s “happy anxiety” appeared to overcome him.

“It was hugely significant that Meghan arrived and walked in alone as her body language signals throughout defined her as confident, poised, and supremely happy.

“There were no suppressed signals of regret over her missing father and it was Harry who looked stricken over his absent mother when her sister read at the lectern.”

Meghan and Harry contrasted in their body language, with Meghan showing an undeniable “poise”, and Harry betraying a “happy anxiety”.

“Even for an actress, Meghan’s poise was formidable. Her back was upright and her hands – the usual giveaway of masked nerves – were still, even when her free hand was hanging at her side.

“She may have been the first royal bride to bathe her groom in beautiful, undiluted eye contact throughout his vows. Harry on the other hand, showed signals that suggested the highest levels of happy anxiety.
