As MoviePass began to flounder amid mounting money woes, changing its model every few weeks and introducing new restrictions like surge pricing and limits on what films customers could see on any given day, rival Sinemia began to turn some heads. It offered a number of different plans, as opposed to MoviePass’ one, and while it cost a little bit more, the company claimed its model supported stability, something that MoviePass customers no longer had. It even began to offer an unlimited plan just after MoviePass disbanded its own. But over the past few months Sinemia customers have begun to complain about the service’s fees, discontent that even led to a lawsuit.
Now, Sinemia is making some changes that will give users the option of purchasing tickets without fees.
The fees largely became a problem when Sinemia switched to a cardless model. Without physical debit cards attached to their accounts, users had to buy the tickets online, and that meant they often had to pay convenience fees to the online ticketing service and processing fees of up to $ 1.80 per ticket to Sinemia. Customers felt like they had been baited into the service and some said the fees on top of the subscription itself hardly made the service worth it.
As of today, however, Sinemia users can request physical debit cards, which will do away with the convenience and processing fees when used at a theater itself. Those fees will still be applicable if customers buy tickets online. There is another catch though. Cards themselves will cost another $ 15 if you decide you want one.
“While our customers have been pleased that we are the only subscription service that continues to provide tickets to any movie for any showtime at any movie theater, we are constantly seeking to improve,” Sinemia CEO Rifat Oguz said in a statement. “Based on customer feedback, we’ve brought back physical debit cards to give our customers the option to avoid all booking fees as well as choose how they want to enjoy their night out at the movies.”
The company also announced some tweaks to its service and app including a different method of handling cardless accounts, a larger customer service team (poor customer service has been a common complaint with Sinemia) and the ability to check your billing date and remaining ticket level through the app. Sinemia customers can request a card through their profile page on the company’s website.

Amazon has taken a number of steps to help you shop online without a bank card, and now it’s taking those efforts to their logical conclusion: the internet retailer has launched its first debit card, Amazon Rechargeable, in Mexico. Unlike a conventional debit or credit card, you can top it up using cash — you can load it with the equivalent of $ 967 US every month. You get a virtual card the moment you sign up (you only need to supply basic name, gender and date of birth info), and anyone who loads Rechargeable with the equivalent of $ 27 or more will get a physical card.
The card isn’t limited to Amazon, either. You can use it at other online stores, or to take advantage of outside internet services like Netflix, Spotify and Uber. Physical card owners can shop in retail stores. And if you need cash in a pinch, you can withdraw it from ATMs.
As with Amazon Cash and similar efforts, there’s one clear objective: making Amazon accessible to a wider swath of the population. Under a third of Mexican adults have credit cards, according to the government’s latest report, and that greatly limits their ability to shop through websites that frequently insist on credit. Rechargeable theoretically lets many more people buy from Amazon — and since it’s relatively open, gives them much more overall purchasing power.

The clocks have gone back, the temperature is plummeting and leaves are losing their green. Which, to channel Game of Thrones can only mean one thing – WINTER IS COMING. And that means energy bills will be bursting.
So I want to play a little game of True or False with you over a series of popular energy myths. See how many you get right, and give yourself a warm pat of the back if you do well, and a cold slap across your fiscal face if you get most wrong.
TRUE OR FALSE. The cheapest way to pay energy bills is by direct debit?
True (but specifically it needs to be monthly direct debit). Then suppliers offer discounts of around 7%. Yet while you pay less in total, as its estimating your usage, if it overestimates it could ask you for more cash – leaving you in-credit – or worse, leaving you underpaying, and in debt with it. So ensure you always give regular meter readings to get accurate bills. And if you think its estimate is wrong, you’ve a right to challenge.
TRUE OR FALSE. It’s cheaper to leave the heating on low all day rather than have it turned off and on?
False(ish). Just pay to pump energy in as and when is needed, as to keep pumping it in constantly isn’t efficient. Using a timer’s best, because your thermostat is designed to turn your heating on and off to keep your home at the temperature you set it. This is the view of both the Energy Saving Trust and British Gas, so in general I’d stick with that.
Yet some heating engineers argue that keeping all the radiators on full but with the boiler down can reduce condensation. Whereas on and off can make it worse. As condensation helps conduct heat outside the home – you lose heat more quickly and will use more energy as a result. So if your house is prone to condensation, you may want to think about it.
TRUE OR FALSE. Renters can’t switch energy provider without their landlords’ permission?
False. You have a right to switch energy provider in your home even if you only pay the rent. There are two exceptions to this 1) If you don’t pay for energy yourself, it’s all included in your rent 2) If you’re looking to switch meter, eg from prepayment to a credit meter, as that’s a physical change to the property that needs permission.
So feel free to do a comparison. Just plug your details into my www.cheapenergyclub.com or any other www.ofgem.co.uk – approved comparison site and it’ll tell you the best deal for you. Just make sure you select ‘all tariffs’ as some comparison sites now default to only show you the ones that will pay them (my cheap energy club doesn’t do this).
If the landlord says it’s written into your contract that you can’t switch, challenge it. Preventing a tenant from changing energy suppliers may be viewed as an unfair term in a tenancy agreement. Talk to www.citizensadvice.org.uk to see if it can help.
TRUE OR FALSE. If you’re in credit when you switch energy provider they must give you the money back?
True (now anyway). If you pay by direct debit and when you leave an energy firm you’re in credit, then since 2014 you should automatically get this back. But track it and if the supplier doesn’t, call it and ask for the cash.
If you switched before 2014 and think you might have been in credit then call to check as they operated a ‘don’t ask don’t get policy’ and you can still ask. Like Aston who emailed: “Eight minutes work calling my old energy suppliers, got £140 refunded after leaving in credit. Why don’t more people do this?”
TRUE OR FALSE. When you change energy supplier someone will need to visit your home?
False. Nobody usually visits your home. Your pipes don’t change and your gas and electricity won’t get cut off. You don’t even need to contact your old energy supplier to tell it you’re switching. The only thing that changes is the price and service. It’s so easy to switch. It isn’t a big deal.
TRUE OR FALSE. I must get boiler cover with my energy provider?
False. Many energy firms use our fear of losing heating to charge hefty insurance costs. They also want us to think there’s some link between our energy provider and our boiler cover. There isn’t – you’re not locked in, so if you do need it, go elsewhere, like Amanda who emailed: “I swapped my boiler cover company and saved £213 a year whilst also increasing cover – and still with an annual service included. Thanks.”
You can choose between boiler-only or central heating cover and to find the cheapest cover use a comparison site such as www.uswitch.com, www.energyhelpline.com and www.moneysupermarket.com. If it’s right for you, get cover ASAP, before the true cold weather kicks in, as almost all new policies have a no-claims period within the first 14-30 days.

Venmo is reportedly taking a leaf out of other digital payment services’ book and making a physical debit card. According to Recode, the PayPal-owned mobile app created to make going Dutch with friends a lot easier has already begun testing a card that would allow users to spend the money in their accounts in brick-and-mortar stores. Some Venmo employees’ feeds show them using the app to pay for purchases from fast-food chains like Taco Bell, confirming that the company is indeed testing something outside its core features. Before this, people could only use Venmo to pay for purchases from partner apps.
A Venmo card means users will be able to spend their money without having to wait for their withdrawal to appear in their bank accounts. For the company itself, Recode says it could mean a way to generate revenue, since payments to merchants come with a corresponding fee.
We still don’t know if the card will actually be released, but if it does make its way to users, the question is how long it’ll last. Bigger companies have tried and failed to connect physical cards with their digital payments services. Take for example, Google, which launched a card to work with Wallet and then killed it merely three years later. We can’t fault Venmo for wanting to try, though, when other payments services like Square are also still toying with the idea of releasing debit cards to go with their users’ accounts.

The 45-year-old Money Saving Expert was in Bournemouth this week for his ITV show.
To coincide with this week’s heatwave, he revealed how you can save money on your vacation by avoiding using certain debit cards abroad.
After uncertainty over the General Election this year and Brexit, the pound to euro exchange rate has taken a hit.
Before Brexit, the exchange rate was around 1.40 to 1.60 euros to the pound, whereas now, it’s 1.14 euros to the pound at best.
But despite sterling falling, holidaymakers can still save money by making sure they don’t use certain debit cards while abroad.
The first debit card Martin mentioned on the show not use was the Halifax debit card.
He said: “If you spend abroad using this card it charges you £1.50 each time you spend, on top of the rates on the day.”
Martin also advised against using debit cards from Santander, Bank of Scotland, Lloyds and TSB.
He also said Yorkshire Bank’s debit card has a minimum exchange fee but will add over a quid.
He said: “Debit cards can be bad cards.”
Martin suggested using an overseas credit card for spending abroad, and revealed his top choices.
The Halifax Clarity card has no exchange or ATM fees and the cash withdrawal interest if repaid in full is between 18.9 per cent and 25.9 per cent.
The Barclaycard Platinum Travel Card also has no exchange or ATM fees, but also no cash withdrawal interest to repay.
Creation Everyday’s credit card has no exchange or ATM fees and a 12.9 per cent to 21.9 per cent cash withdrawal interest to pay if repaid in full.
And the Santander Zero card has no exchange or ATM fees and a cash withdrawal interest if repaid in full of 18.9 per cent.
Martin revealed more information on how to get the best travel rates this week.
A study by Thomas Cook found that more than a third of people use their regular payment cards abroad but half do not know how much they are being charged.
The lack of awareness means British travellers are forking out £105million in charges thanks to an average fee of 2.73 per cent for non-sterling card transactions, the travel firm said.
The figure does not take into account ATM charges or exchange rates used by banks.
New rules introduced on Thursday brought an end to mobile roaming charges when UK citizens use their phones in the EU but many holidaymakers are still being hit with fees each time they take their debit or credit card out of their wallet.
While more than two-thirds of the 2,635 Britons surveyed save regularly for their fortnight in the sun, less than half keep track of currency rates in order to change money at the optimum time, according to the report.
Despite many travellers booking trips up to a year in advance, about one in three buy their currency following the payday closest to their departure date.
Thomas Cook UK managing director Chris Mottershead said: “British consumers have got much savvier in recent years about their spending – how to make the weekly food budget go further and using voucher codes for saving money on family days-out.
“Our first holiday report has shown that this money-conscious mentality comes into play for the cost of the actual holiday but stops where spending money is concerned.
“It reveals the stark lack of understanding when using credit and debit cards abroad.“
Thomas Cook advises holidaymakers to take a mixture of cash and pre-paid currency cards when they travel overseas, and minimise withdrawals from cash machines.
Square Cash’s virtual payment card might not be quite so virtual in the future. Company chief Jack Dorsey has teased a strange, all-black Visa debit card that Recode suspects is really a physical Square Cash card. A Square spokesperson declined to comment, so take this with a grain of salt, but there’s evidence to suggest there’s something to this teaser. You see, Square seriously considered a payment card back in 2014 — the company is no stranger to exploring the concept of a real-world card that draws from online funds.
There’s no guarantee that Square will launch a debit card, no matter what Dorsey is carrying in his pocket. The company reportedly ditched its payment card out of a reluctance to either antagonize its partners or wade through a tangled financial industry. However, there are a few incentives to at least consider the idea.
For one, Square has previously said it would like to “own both sides of the counter.” If it handles both the cards and the payment readers, it doesn’t have to give a cut to anyone else. There’s also the simple matter of catering to a wider customer base. While you can use Apple Pay to go shopping with Square Cash, not everyone can or wants to use an iPhone to make purchases at retail. This would let you use your virtual wallet anywhere that accepts debit cards, regardless of your phone preferences. And simply speaking, a physical card is more inviting to those people hesitant to shop with their handsets. Even if most Square Cash users aren’t about to use a tangible debit card, they might appreciate the option.
