Joachim Low will continue as Germany manager despite the country’s shock early exit from the World Cup in Russia, it has been confirmed.

Low had signed a contract extension on the eve of the tournament to take him up to May 2022, but the reigning champions’ disastrous showing in Russia – where they made a shock exit at the group stage – had led to questions over whether he would continue in the role.

The German football association (DFB) confirmed on Tuesday that the 58-year-old would remain in the role.

“I am very grateful for the belief that the DFB has shown in me and I feel, generally, that despite the justified criticism towards me, I feel a lot of support and encouragement too,” said Low.

“It was important for me, after a few days in which I did a lot of thinking, to sit down and have a one-to-one talk with the top of the federation,” he added.

Low took charge of Die Mannschaft after the 2006 World Cup, having previously been on the coaching staff.

He led the team to the World Cup title in Brazil in 2014 – Germany’s fourth in total and first since 1990.

However, at the latest edition in Russia the team suffered a catastrophic early exit, finishing bottom of their group after suffering two defeats in three games – including going down 2-0 to South Korea.

  • Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin did not voice support for a strong US dollar while speaking at the World Economic Forum this week.
  • Markets hated it.
  • Consider this example 1,437 of the administration taking something that should be simple and turning it into a gong show.

If the Trump administration excels at anything, it’s in turning something that should be easily manageable — if not completely benign — into an unmitigated fiasco. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin’s performance at Davos serves as a perfect example.

“Obviously a weaker dollar is good for us as it relates to trade and opportunities,” Mnuchin said on Wednesday at a panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

This was not the right answer. In the name of global economic stability (and attracting investment to the US) the answer to any question about the dollar should be automatic, a no-brainer for any US Treasury secretary: “The US supports a strong dollar.” That is what the guidebook says you should say. Very simple.

But apparently Mnuchin, an alumnus of Goldman Sachs, is not one for no-brainers.

On his words, the dollar — which had been falling for weeks — fell to a three-year low at one point on Wednesday, and markets roiled. Wall Street, up to that moment, hadn’t been concerned about the dollar slide. Last week, one top money manager told me the slide was due to “petrodollar rebalancing,” and shrugged it off as if it was the last thing the US government should, or could be worried about.

But after what Mnuchin said, billionaire investors started freaking out about it in online blog posts. Thanks to him, what should be an afterthought is now a matter of international scrutiny and dismay.

So Mnuchin tried to backtrack that statement. On Thursday he explained that he was not concerned about a weak dollar short-term, and that of course the Trump administration preferred a long dollar in the long term and so forth. Trump himself had to go out and make a statement in support of dollar strength.

That’s fine, but it’s all too late. Now investors will vacillate between wondering if the Trump administration has a weak-dollar policy (bad for anyone wanting to buy US assets which would then go down in price), to anyone who thinks they have no policy (bad for anyone wanting to sleep peacefully at night).

None of this had to happen, especially not at the hands of someone who supposedly spent years in banking. It’s just another example of this administration’s talent for turning something that should be simple into a complete and total pandemonium. That is truly what they excel at.

Over the Thanksgiving weekend, intrepid player-investigators caught Bungie misleading players about how much experience they were actually getting for repeated quests in the game. In the wake of that embarrassing revelation, Bungie last night posted a lengthy “State of Destiny 2” development post promising to be “more open” about the game’s systems and offering a detailed roadmap of upcoming changes.

“Our team has been reading feedback and working on updates to improve the game,” design director Luke Smith and game director Christopher Barrett wrote in the post. “We’ve also been reading some tough criticism about our lack of communication, and we agree we need to be more open… We know it’s frustrating when there isn’t enough of a dialog with the development team. You have our commitment that we’re going to do a better job going forward.”

Addressing the XP system complaints specifically, Bungie explained that the hidden scaling for repeated missions was intended to “keep slower-paced activities as rewarding as high-intensity grinding without confusing variations in displayed XP values.” That said, Bungie acknowledged “the silent nature of the mechanic betrayed the expectation of transparency that you have for Destiny 2.”

But fear not, football fans — JPMorgan knows how you can make a pretty penny off the league’s woes.

It involves making a short-term bet that shares of CBS will drop. The most-watched US television network and home to multiple games a week, CBS serves as a bellwether of sorts for NFL viewership.

JPMorgan specifically recommends purchasing weekly put contracts that will start making money if CBS shares decline roughly 1% to $ 57.50 by expiration on October 6.

While it’s still too early to know if Trump’s inflammatory comments and the defiant league-wide response will have a material impact on ratings, this week’s upcoming slate of games could provide a much better idea. As such, JPMorgan figures it can’t hurt to be prepared in the event of a major downswing.

“Any potential NFL boycott is more likely to be determined in this weekend’s results,” Shawn Quigg, an equity derivatives strategist at JPMorgan, wrote in a client note. “Investors likely could cite the anthem debate for any weak viewership results, adding to existing viewership concerns. Thus, the greater reward-risk appears skewed to the downside in the near-term as weaker results may mobilize investors to take the potential impact more seriously.”

For an example of how quickly NFL dynamics have shifted since protests have gotten more widespread, JPMorgan cites the spike in jersey sales for Pittsburgh Steeler offensive lineman Alejandro Villanueva. He was the only Steeler on the field for the national anthem this past Sunday, and the firm says that may suggest fans favor it when players stand for the anthem.

While that’s certainly a lot to extrapolate from one instance, making JPMorgan’s suggested options wager could pay off even if ratings decline for other reasons. After all, even before the number of protests grew this past week, there were already worries that declining viewership could hamper future profitability for NFL TV partners.

CBS shares rose 0.6% to $ 58.35 at 2:29 pm EST.

Last weekend’s Pokémon Go Fest did not go well, with technical issues and cell coverage problems preventing many players from participating at the event’s Chicago location in Grant Park. Afterward, the game’s makers refunded players and offered other goodies, but complaints have persisted and there’s even a reported lawsuit. Seemingly as a result of all of the issues, Niantic just announced it’s postponing two pairs of Pokémon Safari events scheduled in Europe to “guarantee the best possible gameplay experience.”

Interestingly, not all of the events are being delayed, just four scheduled for the next two weeks. That includes Copenhagen and Prague on August 5th, along with Stockholm and Amsterdam on August 12th. The Pikachu Outbreak event in Yokohama, Japan on August 14th and all events set for September 16th in France, Spain and Germany are still on the schedule.
