Chris became deaf at 23 months when he contracted meningitis and explained he used the music’s vibrations to help him choreograph his routines.

He left The Greatest Dancer dance captains stunned with his performance to Drake’s single God’s Plan.

Chris explained: “I feel the rhythm, I feel the vibrations.”

He manages to secure the 75 per cent of the audience’s vote which sent him through to the callbacks.

Following his performance, Oti Mabuse commented: “I loved that so, so, so much.

“I enjoyed the popping, the locking, the fact that it was lyrical.

“I absolutely loved every bit of it so thank you so much!”

Cheryl added: “You feel the music. It’s an incredible thing to witness. That was absolutely stunning.”

“Watching you, you were so extremely musical, for someone who can’t hear the music, you became your own music,” Matthew Morrison continued.

“It was so beautiful to watch, so thank you.”

Chris was clearly overcome with the support he received and through a sign language interpreter, he told the audience: “It’s an amazing, amazing experience.

“In my dancing career, I’ve faced so many barriers, so this has been my opportunity really just to show who I am, show that I’m a deaf dancer but absolutely I can do this.”

It wasn’t just the judges who were impressed as viewers were left in tears over the routine.

“I am cryingggg at the greatest dancer that is TALENT!!” one viewer wrote on Twitter.

Another added: “This guy on the greatest dancer right now is actually amazing omg.”

A third continued: “This the greatest dancer show is messing with my emotions so much.”

“Just watched this guy who lost his hearing on The Greatest Dancer. Unreal! Literally had the biggest smile on my face throughout. & big up

his little bro who was so gassed,” someone else shared.

The heartwarming moment came after Matthew shocked his fellow dance captains when .

“Can I just say that Alesha Dixon is fit?” he was heard remarking.

The Greatest Dancer continues Saturday on BBC One at 8pm.

That was the dilemma facing British music journalist Nick Coleman, once the music editor of Time Out and music writer for The Independent, when he began to lose his hearing in 2007. But instead, he leaned in, writing about that experience in his 2012 memoir The Train in the Night: A Story of Music and Loss; now he has a new book, Voices: How a Great Singer Can Change Your Life (out now from Counterpoint Press), in which he writes about the music that inspired and moved him – and continues to do so. His subjects include Aretha Franklin, Kate Bush, The Kinks, Billie Holiday and, in this excerpt, both Patti Smith and Bob Dylan, as he writes about the former’s performance when accepting the latter’s Nobel Prize:

Patti Smith is crammed on to a balcony in a stately ballroom in Stockholm with a small orchestra. She’s up there on behalf of Bob Dylan to accept his Nobel Prize for Literature, and she is going to sing his famous song “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” to the accompaniment of small guitar, lap steel, and strings. She is dressed in a black tuxedo and planted like an Easter Island statue.

The audience is composed of the great and the good of Swedish culture and the Swedish royal family, who are all done up in formal fig, bibs and tuckers, gowns and jewelry, stoles and tiaras. And medals. They are arrayed formally, as for a state portrait. Smith has no medals though her white shirt beneath the oversized tuxedo is nicely ironed. Her steel-colored hair is long and heavy and parted severely in the middle. She is like Albrecht Dürer, who did not do state portraiture. She is also faintly reminiscent of Buster Keaton.

The introduction is strummed artlessly on two chords. Smith sings. The sound she and the guitarist make is as severe as her hairstyle and so is the intent of the words she sings. Yet she is singing beautifully with total involvement, her rich, twangy contralto, with its flattened vowels and its inclination to yodel, driving hard and straight into the language, as if the song had been written this year, the year of all hateful years, 2016.

All is suspense.

But then, after a couple of minutes, Smith appears for a moment to be overwhelmed. She stops singing. She gulps. “I’m so sorry,” she says, blanching. She tries to carry on. . . “Unh. . .” But it won’t come. She apologizes again and looks up in appeal to the conductor standing above her left shoulder. “I’m sorry. Could we start that section . . . ? I apologize.” She looks out into the audience. They are frozen in their places. “I’m so nervous.” She forces an agonized smile.

There is sustained, kindly applause from the audience. You can almost hear the jewelry rattling.

And soon enough she goes again with renewed resolve until, a minute or two later, she tries once more, and again looks up at the conductor with the mute appeal of a frightened child. The conductor, out of shot, presumably makes encouraging faces because Smith, suddenly somehow heartened, hooks quickly back into the song and then seems to grow, to expand in her place and to move her hands a little and then her shoulders and then to pace, striding on the spot, no longer an Easter Island statue but a living, breathing, marching embodiment of the hipster-symbolist song lyric she is singing, all about the doom of the world and the love that may save it. She reaches the end of the song in a sea of strings.

It is impossible to watch without tears.

It is also as great a passage of singing as you are ever likely to hear, if singing is to you not about the observance of musical correctitude and extravagant display and signaled passion and technical virtuosity, but about the inhabitation of the moment up to and including the moment when the moment bursts.

BBC News: Dan Walker stunned as 'psychic' cat runs RIOT – 'You’re not doing it deaf cat' https://briefnews.eu/bbc-news-dan-walker-stunned-as-psychic-cat-runs-riot-youre-not-doing-it-deaf-cat/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-news-dan-walker-stunned-as-psychic-cat-runs-riot-youre-not-doing-it-deaf-cat/#respond Tue, 13 Mar 2018 09:35:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bbc-news-dan-walker-stunned-as-psychic-cat-runs-riot-youre-not-doing-it-deaf-cat/

Football fans will surely remember Paul the Octopus who was used within the 2010 World Cup.

Paul was used as a tool to predict who would win in each football match.

BBC Breakfast’s presenters revealed Russia’s answer to Paul this morning, in the form of a deaf cat.

However the clip that they played didn’t show off much psychic prowess, as Achilles – the cat – avoided doing its job.

Dan said: “Achilles lives in the Hermitage museum in St. Petersburg.

“There are two bowls of cat food there with flags of who are playing each other.

“Whichever bowl he nibbles from, that is apparently his prediction for the game.

The clip of the cat was played over the presenters showed Achilles refusing to nibble from either of the bowls.

He eventually jumped onto the nearby cardboard box, avoiding the food entirely.

Dan commented: “He doesn’t look particularly interested in this excellent game.”

Louise chimed in saying: “If they put a labrador in that position it would not be hanging about at all, would it?”

“The cat is not playing ball there at all, is it?” Dan laughed.

“You know exactly what to do there, you deaf cat.

“You’re not doing it.”

The presenters laughed before moving on with the show.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.

High definition hearing: Deaf sufferers joy as scientists invent bionic ear https://briefnews.eu/high-definition-hearing-deaf-sufferers-joy-as-scientists-invent-bionic-ear-2/ https://briefnews.eu/high-definition-hearing-deaf-sufferers-joy-as-scientists-invent-bionic-ear-2/#respond Sun, 17 Dec 2017 00:44:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/high-definition-hearing-deaf-sufferers-joy-as-scientists-invent-bionic-ear-2/

The research could transform the lives of thousands of people.

Hearing aids and implants are limited because users are often unable to pick out complex sound or hear clearly among background noise.

Researchers at The Bionics Institute in Melbourne are developing a way to adapt the cochlear implant in the ear to stimulate the auditory nerve using light instead of electrical impulses.

This means sounds can be specifically targeted along different frequency regions along the auditory nerve.

Dr Carly Anderson, of Action on Hearing Loss, said: “This is really exciting, and could go a long way to solving the current limitations with cochlear implants revolutionising how we can restore hearing to deaf people.

“This could enable people to communicate more effectively, which could greatly improve their quality of life.”

Researchers carrying out laboratory studies of the new device have secured the support of Action on Hearing Loss, which this month launches a fundraising campaign for its development.

Cochlear implants, developed 40 years ago, and used by 12,000 people in the UK, provide a sensation of hearing.

They consist of two main parts; a speech processor and a surgically implanted receiver and a set of electrodes.

The microphone picks up sound waves which it sends to the processor where the converted sounds are transmitted to the brain.

However, results vary dramatically depending on the health of the inner ear and the individual brain.

Researchers found a way to enable the nerve to become responsive to light instead of electrical signals using gene therapy.

Around 650 adults and 500 children receive a cochlear implant each year but it is estimated only about five per cent of those eligible for an implant actually receives one.

Experts believe this could be because people are not aware they could benefit. People need to be profoundly deaf and gaining little or no benefit from hearing aids.

There are more than 11 million people in the UK with some form of hearing loss. More than 900,000 people in the UK are severely or profoundly deaf.

Ed Rex, 32, from Wood Green, north London, of Action on Hearing Loss, has a progressive hearing loss condition which has affected him since he was a child.

He was fitted with a cochlear implant six years ago, which he said “completely changed my life”.

He struggles to hear people in bars with background noise but added: “The implant gave me confidence again. I heard a grasshopper chirping for the first time.

“The possibility of this new technology is fantastic. I would no longer feel the need to stress myself out when I go out.”

‘Tone deaf’ and ‘infuriating’: Megyn Kelly lays into Trump for criticizing Al Franken sexual misconduct controversy https://briefnews.eu/tone-deaf-and-infuriating-megyn-kelly-lays-into-trump-for-criticizing-al-franken-sexual-misconduct-controversy/ https://briefnews.eu/tone-deaf-and-infuriating-megyn-kelly-lays-into-trump-for-criticizing-al-franken-sexual-misconduct-controversy/#respond Sat, 18 Nov 2017 19:46:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tone-deaf-and-infuriating-megyn-kelly-lays-into-trump-for-criticizing-al-franken-sexual-misconduct-controversy/ megyn kellyScreenshot/NBC

  • NBC host Megyn Kelly slammed President Donald Trump for commenting on sexual misconduct allegations against Sen. Al Franken.
  • Trump has been accused of varying degrees of sexually inappropriate behavior by over a dozen women.
  • Kelly also had some harsh words for Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore, who chimed in with his own assessment of the accusation against Franken.
  • At least nine women have publicly accused Moore of unwanted sexual advances.

Megyn Kelly, the host of NBC’s “Megyn Kelly Today,” took to the airwaves Friday morning to lay into President Donald Trump for commenting on the sexual misconduct claim against Sen. Al Franken of Minnesota.

Radio personality Leeann Tweeden accused Franken of forcefully kissing her without her consent while they were rehearsing for a skit they performed for US troops.

Tweeden spoke out about the alleged incident in a column published last week, and also posted a photo which appeared to show Franken groping her breasts while she was sleeping on the flight home from a USO tour in 2006. He issued an apology after Tweeden’s column was published and called for an independent ethics investigation.

Trump lambasted Franken, who has frequently criticized him, shortly after the accusations against the senator emerged.

“The Al Frankenstien picture is really bad, speaks a thousand words,” he tweeted. “Where do his hands go in pictures 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 while she sleeps?”

“And to think that just last week he was lecturing anyone who would listen about sexual harassment and respect for women. Lesley Stahl tape?” he added.

Kelly slammed Trump, who has been accused of varying degrees of sexual misconduct by more than a dozen women, for commenting on the allegations against Franken.

“Who that has been accused of sexual assault would have the gall to preach to others about sexual misconduct?” Kelly said. “How infuriating that would be. How tone deaf, Mr. President.”

Trump’s tweet also drew condemnation from Gretchen Carlson, the former Fox News host who went public with allegations of sexual misconduct against Roger Ailes, the network’s former CEO, in 2016.

In response to Trump’s question about where Franken’s hands may have gone in “pictures 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 while [Tweeden] sleeps,” Carlson wrote, “What about yours?”

She was likely referencing comments Trump made on a leaked Access Hollywood tape, in which he talked about kissing and groping women without their consent.

“When you’re a star, they let you do it,” Trump said on the tape. “You can do anything … grab ’em by the p—y. You can do anything.”

On Friday, Kelly also had some harsh words for Roy Moore, who is currently in the running for an Alabama Senate seat. At least nine women have accused Moore of sexual misconduct, many of whom say they were teenagers when the alleged incidents took place.

Moore tweeted about what he saw as a discrepancy in the response allegations against Franken received compared to those leveled against him.

Mitch: “Let’s investigate.”

In Alabama, ZERO evidence, allegations 100% rejected.

Mitch: “Moore must quit immediately or be expelled.”

“Roy Moore!” Kelly said incredulously after reading out the candidate’s tweet. “Hello, Roy!”

“The allegations against Moore, which go back decades and which Moore’s campaign has insisted are politically motivated, range from unwanted pursuit to groping to assault,” Kelly said. “So is this guy going to be our next senator?”

Moore has consistently denied the allegations against him and railed against Republican lawmakers who have called on him to withdraw from the race amid the controversy.

“We could soon have, not one, but two sitting US senators accused of sexual assault, not to mention our president,” Kelly said. “Fear not, women of America. All is well. It’s fine.”
