Warning: The following contains spoilers for Sunday’s midseason finale of The Walking Dead. Watch first, read later. If there was one person who wasn’t dismayed that Jesus became the Whisperers’ first victim in Sunday’s midseason finale of The Walking Dead, it was Tom Payne, who played the Hilltop’s reluctant leader. “It was a mutual [decision], and I was really happy about it,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter, adding that “I expressed unhappiness [to the producers] last season…. You can’t help but feel a little bit despondent when you’re not released to do some cool stuff” on the show. Mind you, it wasn’t that he disliked his role. On the contrary, “I loved the character,” he insists. “But there was just so much potential [based on the comic-book Jesus]… that wasn’t realized. [So] I wasn’t sad to say goodbye to that frustration. It was constant.” As for Jesus and Aaron, while Payne thinks that it was “unfair to the audience, to tease that relationship,” he maintains that to have paired them up would have “been a bit lazy: ‘Here are two gay characters. They should get together!’” Were you bummed to see Jesus silenced by the Whisperers? Hit the comments.

With rumors swirling that Fear the Walking Dead’s Madison is a goner and viewers just don’t know it yet, the AMC drama pulled a fast one with Sunday’s “Good Out Here” by having young Charlie fatally shoot Nick to avenge his murder of Ennis, one of her villainous father figures. (And just when it looked as if Nick and Morgan were at the beginning of a beautiful friendship, too!) Here to explain to TVLine why Madison’s son had to kick the bucket, as well as hint at the heroine’s fate in the show’s auspiciously-started Season 4, are new showrunners Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg.
TVLINE | How did you arrive at the decision to kill off Nick?
ANDREW CHAMBLISS| Frank [Dillane] actually had approached AMC and the producers during Season 3, asking to leave so he could pursue other projects. So it was actually in the works before we came on board, and it was one of the first things we were tasked with as we were mapping out the season. Our approach to it was finding the most emotional way to give Nick a send-off that would really impact the story moving forward. And it was something we worked closely with Frank on. It was important to him to give Nick a send-off that honored who the character had been and kind of the possibility of where he might have gone.
TVLINE|I thought it was particularly brutal to have Charlie kill Nick, given the soft spot that he’s always had for kids.
IAN GOLDBERG| Nick does have a complicated relationship with Charlie. Even though they had not spent a lot of time together in the stadium, he came to feel a bit like her older brother. There was a bond there, so it hurt him very much when he realized she was with the Vultures. Also, for Charlie, she’s sort of an orphan of the apocalypse. The Vultures are her family, so when she shoots Nick, that’s not her being a villain. Ennis to her was like family. So it was emotional for her to lose someone that close. It’s complicated on all sides.
TVLINE|What does Nick’s death do to Morgan? Both of them acknowledged that Morgan could have kept Nick from killing Ennis if he’d wanted to.
CHAMBLISS | Morgan is definitely going to carry a sense of responsibility going forward. He left [The Walking Dead’s] Heaps in the premiere wanting to isolate himself, because he feared that getting close to people would open him up to feeling the pain of loss, which he feared might drive him down the path to losing his mind again. So he thought he’d found a way to live his life, which was essentially to put his walls up. He thought that would protect people and protect himself most of all. But this is really an episode where he kind of learned the price of isolating himself. In that moment, as you said, Nick said, “You could stop me if you wanted to.” It was almost like Nick was hoping he would stop him, but Morgan didn’t, because he was more concerned with protecting himself. And ironically, because of that, Nick wound up losing his life, and that’s something that Morgan’s going to have to carry going forward.
TVLINE|As I’m sure you know, fans are afraid that Madison is dead since she wasn’t with Nick, Alicia, Lucy and Strand when they met Al, John and Morgan. But TV logic dictates that since one original cast member was just killed off, the rest are probably safe for a while. What do you say to that?
CHAMBLISS| We would say — and this sort of speaks to Nick’s death, too, even though he died in this episode — that there is still more story to tell in the dual narratives that we’re telling. We don’t want to give away anything that’s coming, but there’s definitely a lot more story to tell in the flashback.
TVLINE|Is it safe to assume that Ennis’ murder will heat up the cold war that’s been going on between the diamond denizens and the Vultures?
GOLDBERG| I would just say there’s a lot more story to tell with the Vultures. Ennis’ death is not the last we will see of them.
CHAMBLISS| Also, Nick’s death and Ennis’ death really do serve as a possible turning point. This could be the thing that makes Alicia, Strand and Luciana realize that whatever their dark mission is might not end the way that they want it to. This may be the wake-up call. Then again, it could go the other way. Those are questions that they’re going to be struggling with going forward.

All together now: Whew!
Even before The Walking Dead struck out Glenn in the Season 7 premiere, his wife Maggie had been transforming from a fearless fighter into a formidable leader. And now that she’s removed weaselly Gregory from his throne at The Hilltop, there couldn’t be a worse time for the show to lose her portrayer Lauren Cohan. Luckily, although the actress is entertaining other offers for when her contract expires at the end of the current Season 8, showrunner Scott Gimple tells TVLine, “I’m incredibly hopeful about” a new deal being struck.
Given Maggie’s pregnancy and her vital role at The Hilltop, there’s certainly a helluva lot of story left to tell with the character, who debuted back in Season 2. “And Lauren is an actor who has such intuition and such power,” Gimple says. “So yeah, hopefully, it all works out.”

The following contains spoilers from the fall finale of AMC’s The Walking Dead.
The Walking Dead pulled a bite-and-switch during Season 8’s fall finale, when after getting people thinking that Lucille might have a date with someone else’s cranium, no heroes wound up stepping up to the bat.
Alas, the episode’s final moments revealed that there would be a casualty nonetheless — because Carl had been bitten by a walker in the course of transporting Siddiq.
Learning of Carl’s fate while filming Episode 6, a few weeks prior, “was quite the shocker for me, Andy [Lincoln, who plays Rick] and everyone,” Riggs said. “It was devastating for me and my family because the show has been such a huge part of my life for so long…. I didn’t expect for Carl to ever get killed off.”
Riggs’ real-life father, William, affirmed as much in a Facebook post. “Watching [TWD EP Scott] Gimple fire my son two weeks before his 18th birthday after telling him they wanted him for the next three years was disappointing,” the parent wrote. “I never trusted Gimple or AMC, but Chandler did. I know how much it hurt him. But we do absolutely know how lucky we have been to be a part of it all and appreciate all the love from fans all these years!”
Chandler Riggs — who will last appear in the Feb. 26 midseason premiere, when Carl dies on-screen — told THR the unexpected twist “serves a good purpose in the story,” adding: “I don’t know how Rick and Michonne are going to handle it. I guess I’ll have to watch and find out!”

The Walking Dead‘s loss is Fear the Walking Dead‘s gain.
Lennie James is leaving the parent series behind after his Season 8 run to join the prequel series for Season 4.
James’ transition to Fear TWD was announced during Sunday night’s edition of Talking Dead. He starts filming Fear this Monday in Austin, Texas — just one week after wrapping TWD in Atlanta.
“Yeah, it’s me,” a self-described “surprised” James said to Chris Hardwick when he was revealed via satellite. “I’m joining the cast of Fear the Walking Dead.
“The hardest part of it… has been leaving The Walking Dead — leaving that cast, leaving that crew,” James, who was part of the original series’ pilot, added. But on Fear, “I’m really looking forward to exploring Morgan in a whole different world, with different characters, in a different place.”
In a statement, TWD EP Scott Gimple said, “Even though Morgan is going to be featured on Fear, he has a lot of story left on The Walking Dead. Morgan’s arc in Season 8 positioned him for the story on Fear. It was also important to see Fear‘s world and characters through new yet familiar eyes.”
This “crossover” of sorts was first teased at New York Comic-Con back in October, when TWD creator Robert Kirkman said that a big event was in the early stages of development.
“We want these shows to have their own legs, tell their own stories and be their own thing,” Kirkman said at the time. “I think we’ve finally gotten to a place with Fear the Walking Dead where it has its own identity [and] we can play with some things.”

However high the fantasy level is on the show, the introduction of a pet tiger might have been a little bit too much of a stretch for some people.
But not for one little girl who approached Khary Payton, who plays King Ezekiel, at Walker Stalker London this weekend.
In the cute video, the little girl asks Khary if his character’s tiger Shiva is real.
“Of course the tiger’s real!” he replied as the youngster looked on in awe.
The actor, who was without Ezekiel’s famous dreadlocks, continued: “I’ve literally been raising this tiger for 12 years.
“Someone left it in a basket on my doorstep with an instruction manual and I just had to wing it from there.
“I started him on formula, you know, like whole milk, and coyotes, muskrats. Now we work up to a three walker a day diet. Lean walkers, not fatty walkers!” added the 44-year-old.
The astonished little girl was then asked by a woman – believed to be her relative – if she thought Khary might be teasing her to which the adorable girl nodded her head.
When The Walking Dead’s showrunner Scott Gimple told TVLine that viewers would dig the group being introduced in “New Best Friends,” I’ll admit I was skeptical. To me, the AMC drama already seemed overpopulated. But, after getting a load of Pollyanna McIntosh’s Jadis and her fantastically freaky junkyard collective, I’m eating my words. They. Are. Awesome. Even series lead Andrew Lincoln agrees. “One of my loveliest moments on set,” the Scottish actress says, “was when he turned around and went, ‘You guys are weird. I like you.’”
Endearingly, McIntosh — a veteran of SundanceTV’s Hap and Leonard and the fearsome star of the Offspring sequel The Woman — is just as enamored of her character as Lincoln and me. Before auditioning, she was told that the casting call for Jadis “was going out to both sexes, and that really thrilled me,” she exclaims. “I loved that open-mindedness and knowing that traditional femininity was not an issue here. And yet she was not to act particularly masculine, either. Whether a woman or a man, she was a leader, and that was that.”
Apparently, Jadis is a pretty inventive leader, too. When presented with her unique speech pattern, her portrayer “decided it was about her making the group more cohesive, so they have something in common that’s not just that they dress similarly and even wear their hair similarly,” she explains. “Also, it gives them a bit of mystery and is a power play. It kind of intimidates outsiders speaking that way. You get your point across, get what you need and keep this sort of division between ‘them’ and ‘us.’
“I’m going to have to start speaking like that now,” she adds with a laugh, “when I want to get things done!”
Though McIntosh — a self-professed “big puppy that talks too much” — acknowledges that she’s gotten into the “habit of playing characters who don’t say a lot but are pretty intimidating,” she won’t divulge how formidable a fighter Jadis will turn out to be. However, she does hint at a promising alliance between the collective and Alexandria. After Jadis concludes her negotiation with Rick, “you can see from the smile on her face that she’s pretty pleased with how things have gone down,” notes McIntosh. “But there’s also that lovely moment with the handshake and her not wanting to touch his bloody hand. She makes sure that he knows who’s still on top.”
