DC’s Legends of Tomorrow has made an appointment with Dr. Strangelove, casting Body of Proof alum Nic Bishop in an homage to the dark 1964 feature comedy.

TVLine has learned exclusively that the English actor is set to guest-star on the CW series in a Season 6 riff on Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, Stanley Kubrick’s acclaimed satirization of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States.

In the episode — which appears to be the upcoming season’s fourth, titled “Bay of Squids” —  Nate (played by Nick Zano) and Zari (Tala Ashe) must infiltrate the Kennedy White House to stop Bishop’s warmongering General Kilgore from steering JFK to start WWIII when an alien begins wreaking havoc in Fidel Castro’s Cuba in 1962.

Bishop’s character is likened to Dr. Strangelove‘s General Buck Turgidson, who was played by George C. Scott in the Kubrick film.

In addition to his aforementioned two-season run as Body of Proof‘s Peter Dunlop, Bishop’s many TV credits include, most recently, Apple TV+’s Truth Be Told, as well as Snowfall, Covert Affairs, Dominion and Home and Away. (I see that he also apparently is dating Legends star Jes Macallan, and thus would be within her safe COVID “bubble.”)

Legends of Tomorrow is among the CW series still awaiting a return date and which are penciled in for Spring 2021 or later.

Stargirl creator and series EP Geoff Johns used an appearance at the DC FanDome virtual event to tease one “big” return, plus some DC character debuts.

In a light and lively Q&A moderated by actress/DC’s Stargirl director Lea Thompson and featuring cast members Brec Bassinger, Amy Smart, Yvette Monreal, Anjelika Washington and Cameron Gellman, Johns responded to much raving about the season finale’s epic group fight — which included Hourman sparing Solomon Grundy’s life — by saying, “I’m excited for people to see more of Grundy. He’s not gone just yet. [There’s a] cool story idea for Grundy coming up.”

Amid all the Grundy talk, Gellman, who plays Rick/Hourman, shared how for his fight scene opposite a to-be-CGI’d monstrosity, he had to straddle a big “green pickle” that had a sad face scribbled on it.

Stargirl Season 2 Budget CW

Among other teases, Johns affirmed that the DC villain Eclipso, as suggested by Shiv hunting down a Heart of Darkness diamond shard, would be “very important” in Season 2 . Then, in response to a fan question, Johns hinted, “There’s always a chance” for Beth to team up with an owl, as as Dr. Mid-Nite does in DC lore. “We will definitely be talking about Hootie at some point,” he said.

Johns promised more rivalry between Courtney/Stargirl and Cindy/Shiv, and also said that the pink pen Courtney grabbed from the OG JSA HQ — presumably Yz aka Johnny/Jakeem Thunder’s Thunderbolt — and casually plopped onto her bedroom desk will get further screen time, once the show does justice to the heroes already in the mix.

“We do have so many other things to explore with these characters, and other avenues and other characters to meet and introduce, we’ll do it the best we can and we’ll do it at our own pace,” he said. “But we’ll definitely be playing with things like the pink pen in Season 2.”

DC’s Stargirl‘s complete DC FanDome panel is streaming on demand through Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1 pm ET.

The following contains major spoilers from the Season 1 finale of DC’s Stargirl, which premiered Monday on DC Universe and airs Tuesday at 8/7c on The CW.

The JSA and the ISA faced off in the DC’s Stargirl Season 1 finale, all as the clock ticked down to Brainwave fully brainwashing millions.

With all the gr’ups in a trance and Pat being commanded to strike out as S.T.R.I.P.E. against stepdaughter Courtney, Beth and “Chuck” scrambled to jam Brainwave’s signal, partly by distracting the Gambler by transferring his personal millions to charity. Once the jammer was switched back on and Pat snapped out of it, S.T.R.I.P.E. joined the fight, as Stargirl, Wild Cat and Hourman threw down with Icicle, Dragon King, Sportsmaster and Tigress. Along the way, Cindy got free and joined the melee, first by running through Daddy with her shiv, while the Gambler set Solomon Grundy loose to go whatever a roboto with S.T.R.I.P.E. and then Hourman.

After besting Tigress, Wild Cat made a beeline for the transmission tower, only to run into (but clobber) a herd of Dragon King’s hooded minions. One, though, remained standing — and revealed himself to be an alive Henry Jr.! Except… it wasn’t; it was Sr. tricking Yolanda. The trick was ultimately on him, though, as Wild Cat’s got claws, which she impulsively used to slash the baddie’s throat.

Wild Cat and Stargirl raced to the giant transmission tower jutting out of the high school football field, which the latter handily sliced and diced using her Cosmic Staff. Icicle meanwhile kidnapped Barbara and dragged her to the roof of the American Dream building, where he reiterated his bonkers world view and even more crazily suggested they run away together. Pat, though, arrived to intervene, after which Stargirl and Icicle got into it again, with him eventually getting lobbed onto the street below. And just as he came to and aimed to start zapping again, a pickup truck — driven by Mike (still watching the dog, though!) — came barreling down the street, plowing the frozen foe into ice cubes.

In a series of epilogues, The Shade materialized inside the ISA lair, scoffing at the failure of his colleagues’ brainwashing folly… Cindy rummaged through The Magician’s storage locker, looking for a diamond shard inside of which seems to be the villain Eclipso… the Whitmore-Dugans celebrated Christmas with the whole gang, during which Courtney gave Pat the “World’s Best Dad” mug (sniff!) she had made for her own father all those years ago… and, finally, a man played by Joel McHale show up at Pat’s old apartment complex in North Hollywood, introducing himself to the curious manager as Sylvester Pemberton?!

Stargirl Season 1 Finale

TVLine spoke with Stargirl creator and series EP Geoff Johns about Season 1’s highlights, several of the finale’s bug twists, and at least one of Season 2’s new Big Bads.

TVLINE | Season 1 was so well-made, so well-cast, and people really took to it in a way I haven’t seen in a while. What are you most proud of?
Well, I’m really happy that people responded to the show. And I’m happy that we have such an amazing cast. I just think I’m really thrilled that we had such a fun time making this show, and we all get to do a second season. I guess I’m most proud that people embraced the characters — especially since we took some characters that are off the beaten path and we put them front and center. It’s fun to see people say, “I love Dr. Mid-Nite!” [Laughs] It’s so cool, because as a comics fan you want people to validate your favorite characters, and mine have always been these obscure guys.

Stargirl PilotTVLINE | And on a more superficial note, any stunt sequence or visual effect?
You know, I really love how the [cosmic] staff turned out — the personality, how it kinda found a life of its own. It never had a personality like that in the comic books, so bringing it to life gave us so many opportunities — from Josh Stern, our gaffer, who really helped create this “glow stick” that ended up being the staff; [visual effects supervisor] Andrew Orloff at Zoic and his team brought it to life visually; and then Walter Garcia, our stunt coordinator, who figured out a cool way to use it in action that was unique. So the staff is probably my favorite thing. I didn’t realize it was going to be such a big, important, fun character. Brec [Bassinger] didn’t, either; it took a while for her to figure out, “Oh, it’s alive!” It was over the course of the pilot and the early episodes that we suddenly realized how special that staff really was.

Stargirl Finale Yolanda KillsTVLINE | Coming out of the finale, I feel like one of the heaviest moments involved Yolanda (played by Yvette Monreal). She seems to be in a dark place now, clearly having trouble processing that she took a life.
Yes, very much so. That’s going to be a big part of Season 2, her struggle with that. You see it when they’re sitting on the bleachers. You see this relief on Rick’s (Cameron Gellman) face, you see that he found peace — I love that moment where Courtney says, “Are you OK?” and he says, “Yeah,” because there is so much in that “yeah” for him. He’s starting to kind of turn a corner, whereas we see Yolanda turning the other way, as she is sitting a bit distant from the other kids. She’s lost in her own world, thinking about what she has done. That’s definitely something that will play a major role going into Season 2 — how is she going to deal with what she’s done? It’s not just, “Oh, she took out a villain.” It’s, “Oh, she killed somebody.” Rick was ready to [kill someone], and she was not.

Stargirl henryTVLINE | That was a pretty cruel thing you did there, making Yolanda, and us, think for a second that Henry (Jake Austin Walker) was back. Were you counting on the fact that fans were quite vested in that character somehow returning?
One-hundred percent. One of the things we always knew when building the season — and Jake knew this from Day 1 — is that Henry had a finite story. Henry was going to go from this almost unlikeable bully to possibly a redeemed hero, and then ultimately die protecting his new friends when facing his father, while also learning a lesson that Courtney imparted on him and apologizing to Yolanda….. For us, it was a really beautiful arc, and I sat down with Jake before he signed on and talked about the story — because Jake is such an amazing actor — and said, “This is what his story is throughout the season.” And that bit in [Episode] 13 was playing to the superhero trope of “Nobody ever dies” and then subverting it.

I can’t tell you how many people are like, “I hate Brainwave!” They like the actor (Christopher James Baker), they like the character, but they hate him; he’s kind of become the main villain because of how cold and cruel he is and what he does to his own son, so we wanted to make sure that the payback was fairly vicious. His cruelty came back to him, tenfold.

Stargirl Beth BarbaraTVLINE | The “manifesto” that Beth came across — was that a misdirect, or was the ISA really looking to brainwash everyone into becoming Green Deal-loving supporters of universal healthcare?
It’s partially true, but there’s much more to it that they were going to do, as each one of the villains certainly has their own agenda. We’ll see a little bit more of what the surviving villains wanted, and want still, in Season 2, but yeah, Icicle’s view of the world is strange. In his mind, he thinks [his POV] is perfect, as he says, “What if you could cure cancer but it would take 500,000 lives right now? You’d have to kill half a million people but cancer is gone forever, would you do it?” I think it’s a really interesting question for a villain to pose.

Stargirl 1x12 BrainwaveTVLINE | Outside of Brainwave, are there any villain deaths you want to confirm?
Oh, I don’t want to confirm anything, because it’s too much fun to leave it open. [Laughs]

TVLINE | But Brainwave, definitely?
Yeah, he’s dead.

TVLINE | As far as the assorted threats you teased for Season 2, you gave us The Shade… Shiv (Meg DeLacy) and Eclipso… whatever Isaac the “tuba turd” does next, with or without his mother’s leftover violin case… and whomever/whatever Joel McHale is playing in that very final scene.
Eclipso is one of my very favorite villains in the books, and he’s somebody who in the comics actually killed Beth Chapel and Yolanda Montez — and they never came back, until recently. They were dead before I ever got into comics in the ’90s, but I brought them back at the end of Doomsday Clock. Eclipso is a really interesting character because he embodies darkness and corruption. The Shade, we obviously set up. And there are more character and other surprises we haven’t even hinted at yet for Season 2.

There are some critical RSVPs — and seemingly some MIA characters? — in the first photos from the climax of DC’s Stargirl‘s Season 1 finale.

The two-part finale kicks off with “Stars & S.T.R.I.P.E. Part One” (streaming Monday, Aug. 3 on DC Universe, then airing Tuesday, Aug. 4 on The CW), in which Courtney (played by Brec Bassinger), Pat (Luke Wilson) and the team regroup to figure out their next steps, all with the ISA hot on their trail. Meanwhile, Rick (Cameron Gellman) makes a breakthrough, and the team prepares for a showdown with the ISA.

Then in “Stars & S.T.R.I.P.E. Part Two” (streaming Aug. 10 on DC Universe, airing Aug. 11 on The CW), as the Injustice Society of America comes one step closer to accomplishing their mission, Courtney and the JSA face off with Icicle and the villains of the ISA.

Specifically, the photos below show Stargirl, Wild Cat, Hourman, S.T.R.I.P.E. and an Excalibur-wielding Justin (Mark Ashworth) facing off against Icicle (Neil Jackson), Sportsmaster (Neil Hopkins), Dragon King (Nelson Lee) and Tigress (Joy Osmanski).

Stargirl Season 1 Finale

Where are Beth/Dr. Mid-Nite (Anjelika Washington) and Brainwave (Christopher James Baker), to name but two heretofore key players from each side? (Maybe the former is tucked away somewhere safe with “Chuck,” running comms?) We shall see!

As Luke Wilson, who plays Pat, recently told TVLine of the already-renewed superhero series’ freshman finale, “I think you’re going to learn a lot more about the Injustice Society’s plan — not just for Blue Valley, but for world domination. And there’s an epic battle at the end.

“In the best way, it’s a mixture of a big finale and also some closure,” he said, “but when you look at the overall picture, there’s still major turmoil underneath the surface.”

This recap contains spoilers from Episode 11 of DC’s Stargirl (which premieres new episodes Monday on DC Universe and Tuesday on The CW).

This week on DC’s Stargirl, a blast from Courtney’s past threatened to derail her superheroic future. Plus, Brainwave orders Icicle to ice [Spoiler].

Coming off of last week’s deadly clash with Dragon King and Brainwave, Pat urged Barbara to pack up Courtney (and Mike, while she’s at it) and get out of Dodge. Barb, though, declined to, partly because Henry King Jr.’s death suggests that the ISA will spare no one. If everyone is going to stay put, Pat says, they all need to act normal and none the wiser, lest they become primary targets for Brainwave, Icicle et al.

The doorbell then rings, and it’s none other than Sam Kurtis (played by Enlisted‘s Geoff Stults) responding to his ex’s email with an in-person appearance. Though Pat makes nice meeting his predecessor, an unimpressed Courtney dismisses Sam as being “not my father.” Sam acknowledges he has been out of the picture for “a while,” but when he realized that Barbara had returned to Blue Valley (of all places), and upon getting her email, he had to see what’s what. Sam shows Court that he has a locket just like hers, noting that he gave her hers back in the day — but Courtney isn’t convinced. She then pulls Pat aside to wonder what she has been doing this whole time, as Stargirl, if she isn’t in fact Starman’s daughter. Like, why would the Cosmic Staff have chosen her? Meanwhile downstairs, Barbara grills Sam about his return, given how he vanished that Christmas Eve a decade ago and hasn’t been heard from since. He admits that his true purpose is to get to know his daughter. And to that end, Court agrees to grab breakfast with Sam, before heading to school.

Stargirl Luke Wilson InterviewPat swings by the auto shop to update Rick (who is still poring over his dad’s coded journal, though no one seems to care) and Beth on the Courtney sitch, when who strolls in but Justin the high school janitor (who at the top of the episode was seen looking for his steed at an unamused farmer’s ranch). Justin is clearly disoriented/in some fugue state, because he mistakes Pat and the kids for Dragon King and two minions, and thus brandishes Excalibur! Pat manages to snap Justin out of it for a bit, at which point the Seven Soldiers of Victory alum breaks down sobbing. Nudged to recall his story from “the time of knights and dragons,” Justin says, “I was a lowly yet loyal page, cleaning the stables,” when King Arthur on his deathbed bestowed him with the sword: “He told me heroes can come from anywhere.” But how did he wind up in Blue Valley? “All of you soldiers were scattered and gone, but the dragon still needed slaying,” Justin recalled. Alas, he was captured, after which “they stole my identity from me. And they’ll do it to us all!” Pat brings Justin home, telling Barbara that he suspects the ISA planning a mass brainwashing.

Henry Sr. pays Jordan a visit, affirming that Dr. Ito restored his memory, and he thus knows who Stargirl is — Courtney Whitmore aka stepdaughter of Pat Dugan fka Stripesy — and now he intends to kill them both. Jordan asks him not to, saying that the loss would devastate Barbara. Henry notes that he has sacrificed both his wife and son in the name of their project, which is more attainable than ever now that he has “absorbed” dead Junior’s own power. When Henry offers to “erase” Barbara’s memory of her husband and daughter (perhaps as he once did with Justin?), Jordan reminds him that no one is ever the same after that process. Growing impatient, Henry urges Jordan to make up his mind.

Stargirl 1x11 SamBreakfasting at the diner, Sam tells Courtney that after bailing on her and Barb, he “traveled a lot, looking for work, chasing leads and business opportunities that never panned out” (or that he screwed up). Maybe she can visit him in California sometime, and they can get to know one another better? But when Sam brings Courtney back home (seriously, how late for school will she be?), he pauses to ham-handedly point out that their lockets are quite valuable, having been made by “an old-time jeweler to the stars.” And if Courtney give him hers, he can sell them both and put a deposit down on his own place, for her to visit. Courtney responds exactly as Jason Robards did in the Parenthood movie when Tom Hulce asked for one final loan — with a defeated nod. Afterward, Pat invites Court to take out her frustrations on him; instead, she runs into his arms, sobbing. Off of that, Pat catches up to Sam, asking, “What the hell were you thinking?” before warning, “Don’t ever come back here.” When Sam quips about how good Barbara still looks (though not as good as when he “had her”), Pat decks the lout, and then points out, “You’re lucky I’m busy.” Indeed.

Back at the house, Barbara tells Court that she is struggling over their next move, realizing that families in Blue Valley need protecting. And yet, “If I let you stay and fight, you might die.” When Courtney opens the crate and the staff doesn’t respond to her, she laments, “I don’t think it matters, Mom. It’s not meant for me anymore.” Courtney finally makes her way to school, to alert the rest of the team that her dad was not Starman but “just some jerk.” Yolanda and Beth try to brush off the importance of legacy, but Court points out that the staff isn’t working for her anymore. And that with Joey and now Junior both dead, “I can’t have anyone else get hurt because I thought I was someone I’m not.” Later, at a school gathering about Junior’s death, Sr. addresses the crowd — but gets into Courtney’s head specifically, making clear that he blames her for his son’s death.

Panicked, Courtney returns home to the crate, though for naught. Pat assures her that while he doesnt know much about staff, “it always knew your dad wasn’t Starman.” Instead, it chose her because it believed in her, “and now it’s waiting for you to believe in yourself again.” (Remember, “Heroes can come from anywhere.”) With Pat and Barbara both at her side, Courtney gives the staff one more go, and as wind from an unknown source flits through her mane of beach waves, the staff glows anew — popping a few basement lights in the process. Court stands up and beams as brightly as the staff, as Barbara and Pat look on… as does houseguest Justin. “Our queen has risen!” he marvels.

Stargirl powered back up just in time, seeing as Jordan — after hacking into Barbara’s computer to see she had Googled a “Starman Murdered by Icicle” news story — is now on board with Henry doing whatever is necessary, as the Project New America countdown clock shows about 12-1/2 days until launch. “We’ll take care of Stargirl, her sidekick, and her mother,” Henry affirms. At which point Jordan interjects, “…and the boy, too. Mike.” After all, you “can’t leave a legacy running around.”

What did you think of the episode “Shining Knight”?

RELATED STORIES

This recap contains spoilers from Episode 10 of DC’s Stargirl (which premieres new episodes Monday on DC Universe and Tuesday on The CW).

This week on DC’s Stargirl, while Barbara struggled to process her daughter’s super secret, Courtney untangled a family tie before embarking on a rescue mission for a semi-inanimate friend.

In a flashback to two years ago, we see how Barbara and Pat first met — both ordering, and ultimately sharing, a banana split at the diner in Blue Valley, where Barbara was selling her late mother’s house. Cut to the present and a far less sweet mood, as Barbara wonders, “What the hell is going on?!” in her basement, where Court is holding the glowing Cosmic Staff. Pat attempts a detailed download, but Court jumps in to claim that her father was a superhero until Jordan Mahkent killed him, and now she is claiming her birthright. Apoplectic, Barbara insists that Starman was not Courtney’s dad, before ordering the teen to her room. Babs then leans into “sidekick” Pat, contending that their marriage has been a lie. And once she confirms that Court was in no car accident, she sends Pat packing: “Get out of this house.”

Over at the hospital, we realize that Henry Sr. has no memory of the past 10 years — his wife Merry’s death, by drowning in a pool, included. But he discovers that Junior inherited his gift, and promises to help the lad navigate this frightening ability. When Sr. goes to sleep, Junior hears him thinking about “Merry… Starman… last day.” Junior dashes home to cue up Dad’s tape from the last day of his lab notes. “My wife is dead. Just like that,” Sr. remarks on the tape. He describes Merry, whom he met during a bank heist, as as “the girl of a thousand gimmicks,” and someone who stunned him with her pure thoughts” — to a degree that it made him question Jordan and the larger mission. But Jordan led the JSA to them, and the ISA killed the heroes, including Merry’s brother aka Starman! “I knew she would never forgive me,” Sr. said, and he hoped his missus would go into hiding. “But she didn’t,” he says, cursing out Jordan. “There are no more good thoughts to be found. Mary is dead.”

As Pat skulks off to crash at his garage, a concerned Mike insists on coming with. Meanwhile, the Cosmic Staff wakes up Courtney, but she rebuffs its invitation and orders it back to the crate. Instead, the staff zips over to Pat’s bulletin board with the ISA suspects and analyzes Icicle. Jordan himself meanwhile pays Sr. a visit at the hospital, saying that with Dr. Ito’s machine ready, all they need is his very special brainpower to reshape people’s thoughts en masse. The Cosmic Staff then shows up stag and tries to zap Jordan, but Sr. blocks it with his telekinesis. Frozen in its tracks, the staff is then literally frozen by Jordan, who then takes it and leads Sr. off to Dr. Ito’s lab to get his memory back.

Stargirl 1x10 juniorWhen Court realizes the staff is missing, she freaks out to her mom, but Barbara is having none of it. She reiterates that Starman was not her father, before announcing that they will be leaving Blue Valley soon as she gets back from the office. Alerted by Court, Pat asserts that he needs to get Barbara away from the American Dream building ASAP, so he runs over to her office. Courtney meanwhile has an awkward moment with Mike, who guilt-trips her over not sharing what is going on with their folks, before she heads into town and gets hailed by Junior. He relays all that he has learned — that his dad is awake, and his mom was Starman’s sister. “You’re my cousin?!” asks Court, before giving Junior a big hug. Junior reveals that Jordan has the Cosmic Staff, and that his dad doesn’t remember the past 10 years. Court wants her staff back, and Junior wants to save his Dad (believing that his mother was in the midst of turning him good), so they agree to team up.

Barbara is packing up her office some when she thinks to email Sam Kurtis about “Your Daughter, Courtney,” saying: “Please contact me.” Pat shows up a bit later to warn his wife, “You can’t be here” in “the most dangerous place in town.” Jordan just then swings by with his parents to drop off a ‘thank you” gift for dinner the other night. After they leave, Barbara reveals to Pat that she recorded the parents speaking in Norwegian. Over dinner at the diner, Barbara uses an app to translate the recording, which says in part, “Once the machine is on, everything will change.” Back at Barbara’s office, meanwhile, we see that Sam Kurtis has replied to her email….

After some deserved squabbling about allying with Brainwave’s son, Rick, Yolanda and Beth agree to suit up with Court and Junior and head into the tunnels. Once there, they split up, with Rick and Beth soon coming upon the cell holding Solomon Grundy — aka the thing that killed Rick’s parents. Court, Yolanda and Junior meanwhile arrive at Dr. Ito’s lab, where Sr. is strapped to a table and hooked up to some memory gizmo. While still-imprisoned Cindy fruitlessly begs to be let out and kill Stargirl herself (LOL), a fight breaks out between the teen heroes and Snap Dragon King’s minions. The kids hold their own, leading Ito himself to enter the fray and take on Stargirl. But just when he goes for the kill, Yolanda breaks the Cosmic Staff free from its own cage and slips it to Courtney, who zaps her attacker. Angered, Dragon King rips off his mask, revealing his monstrous face. Junior meanwhile frees his dad… except Sr. already has his memory back, and is just fine with the sinister status quo. More so, he wants Junior to join him!

The kids bolt for the exit, only to eventually run into a set of prison bars. Rick, who had to be forced to give up on getting at Grundy, uses his strength to bend open the bars long enough for Beth to slip through, but then Brainwave shows up and uses his own power to close ’em up again. With an assist from Junior’s bean, Rick opens the bars back up and Hourman first slips through, after which Junior uses his power to force Courtney to go through next. Now alone on the bad side of the bars, Junior faces off with his father, but he is no match. After clarifying that it was he, and not Icicle, who killed Merry back in the day, Sr. chooses villainy over family once again and KO’s his kid with a barrage of rubble, before crashing the tunnel roof down on top of him. But not before Junior gets off a final “I am sorry” to ex-GF Yolanda.

When Sr. goes to sleep, Junior hears him thinking about “Merry… Starman… last day.” Junior dashes home to cue up Dad’s tape from the last day of his lab notes.

This recap contains spoilers from Episode 8 of DC’s Stargirl (which premieres new episodes Monday on DC Universe and Tuesday on The CW).

Stargirl had to sit on the sidelines for much of this week, in the wake of trading brutal blows with Shiv. That left the rest of the new JSA to investigate this new archenemy, with mixed results.

For starters, we saw that Pat purposely barreled his beloved Buick into a tree after retrieving injured Court from the site of her showdown with Shiv. That way, they had a cover story for when he admitted her to the hospital. When Courtney came to, Pat said she needed to recoup while he looked into the villainous Cindy Burman’s parentage. (Did I miss how Pat knew who Stargirl had battled with?) Pat also said it was time to loop in her mother Barbara, whom he had just called home from her business trip with Jordan. Court, though, argued that they should wait until after the ISA has been vanquished — a decision that will surely blow up in their faces.

stargirl 1x08 beth bobbie patIrked that Courtney fought solo against Shiv, Rick, Beth and Yolanda were determined to do some recon during their teammate’s incapacitation. To that end, Beth went knocking on the Burmans’ door, aiming to introduce herself to stepmom Bobbie as a classmate looking for cheerleading tips from Cindy. Worried about Beth going it alone, Pat showed up just as Bobbie answered, passing himself off as Beth’s step/adoptive dad. While noshing on some cookies offered by their Stepford Wife-y host, Beth used her goggles to get a read on Bobbie, only to have Chuck turn up zilch. Then, while Pat entertained (an apparently “thirsty”) Bobbie, Beth first sneaked down into the tunnels, after spotting/accessing the keypad, but one roar from Solomon Grundy sent her scampering back upstairs.

Cindy meanwhile showed up at Courtney’s house, to pay her injured classmate a visit and bring candy. Court was understandably on edge throughout the visit, as Cindy spoke innocently enough about their growing connection and the things they have in common… though always in a way that could be read as her alluding to their super identities. Cindy, though, erased any doubt about how much she knew when she bid Courtney good-bye, by remarking on how much she admires “your staff… Stargirl.” Cindy said she would do Courtney no more harm just yet, at least not until she first has a chance to kill all of her friends!

Back at the Burmans’, Beth slipped up to Cindy’s bedroom (while Pat tended to Bobbie’s plumbing), where she eventually eyeballed/pocketed an old photo of an Asian scientist whom Chuck ID’d as a long-dead war criminal. When Cindy came home and announced herself to Bobbie, Beth panicked a bit, until Wildcat showed up outside on the ledge and yanked her friend out the window, into strongman Rick’s waiting arms. Regrouping down the street, Beth showed the scientist’s photo to Pat, who immediately recognized the man as Dr. Shiro Ito.

Courtney, meanwhile, had texted Yolanda that Cindy knows that she is Stargirl. When Yolanda texted back with a recap of their scare with Beth, Court suited up and went to fetch the Cosmic Staff. Per Pat’s earlier heartfelt instructions, the staff was reluctant to lead Courtney into harm’s way. But when Court explained that Pat and the others were in danger, it obliged, eventually sending Stargirl careening through Cindy’s bedroom window to kick off a rematch. The girls’ brawl soon enough made its way onto the nighttime street, where Stargirl held her own a bit better, all things considered (though Cindy was neither suited up nor wielding her own staff).

Henry happened upon the fight and pulled over his car to observe, all the while hearing the thoughts of each combatant as Cindy pinned down Stargirl and struggled to plunge her blade into her foe. Overwhelmed at the end of what was already a “big” day for himself, Henry clutched his overworked noggin and bellowed, emitting a blast that knocked the girls apart. No sooner had Cindy gotten up than three of her angry father’s robed minions emerged from the shadows to grab her and lower her into a nearby manhole, with no one seeing. Henry meanwhile realized that Courtney was Stargirl and blamed her for Cindy’s sudden vanishing, before leaving the scene.

Elsewhere this week….

DC’s Stargirl Recap: Girl Gone Wild https://briefnews.eu/dcs-stargirl-recap-girl-gone-wild/ https://briefnews.eu/dcs-stargirl-recap-girl-gone-wild/#respond Tue, 09 Jun 2020 06:29:13 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/dcs-stargirl-recap-girl-gone-wild/

RELATED STORIES

This recap, by the very definition of the word “recap,” contains spoilers from Episode 4 of DC’s Stargirl (which premieres new episodes Mondays on DC Universe and Tuesday on The CW).

Stargirl this week began assembling a new Justice Society of America. Was her first recruit a purrfect fit?

“Wildcat” opened with a flashback to three months ago, where we discovered that Yolanda (now of the “Losers” lunch table) used to be quite popular at Blue Valley High, though not in an obnoxious/Mean Girl way. She was dating Henry King Jr., she was a favorite to win whatever student government position she was running for, her parents doted on her….

But then, one night, Henry texts Yolanda at home, asking her to “send me a pic… something sexy.” Yolanda is hesitant, but when Henry stresses “just 4 me” and that he loves her, she slips off her top and bra and snaps a topless selfie for her beau.

Backstory short, Cindy somehow got her hands on the sext and circulated it around to everyone just as Yolanda was giving an election day speech before the student body. Mortification, a rough break-up, and a grounding/hardcore estrangement by her parents followed.

Back in the present day, Courtney surveys the artifacts she gathered from the OG JSA HQ —  Doctor Mid-Nite’s goggles, Hourman’s hourglass, Wildcat’s cowl, Johnny Thunder’s “pen,” a lantern that is green. While keeping her stash a secret, she reaffirms to Pat that she wants to begin recruiting, but he is against dragging anyone else into this. Instead, his priority is finding the villains before they find them. That day at school, Courtney clashes with Cindy, who was bullying Yolanda. “You have no idea who you’re messing with,” the Mean Girl hissed. “Neither do you,” the secret Stargirl shot back. Yolanda, though, again rebuffed the new girl’s friendship, insisting she wants to be left alone.

Courtney finds Yolanda boxing in the school gym, and tries a different approach: “It’s not you who needs my help, it’s me who needs your help.” She invites Yolanda to her house for dinner that, night, saying she’ll explain everything then — alas, Yolanda is very grounded. The next day, Courtney works the Henry connection, revealing that she was the one who (accidentally) blew up the jock’s car. “The enemy of my enemy is my friend…?” Yolanda breaks down, explaining that Henry had been ‘so nice” and she thought they were getting serious. But now her whole life has changed. Her mortified parents won’t even bring her to church anymore.

Yolanda agrees to come over, and Courtney shows her the cosmic staff and shares a bit of her “destiny” as Starman’s (possible) daughter. Court invites Yolanda to try on the Wildcat outfit, and… it is nasty. Baggy, nondescript, and it smells like a gym locker. Yet when she puts on the (worse-smelling) cowl, the whole outfit magically transforms into a sleek, form-fitting catsuit. After checking Wiki to see what Wildcat’s powers were (e.g. dangerous claws, agility), the girls test them out around town. They then decide to follow Henry to his father/Brainwave’s hospital room, and get a peek at his visitor’s log — maybe ID other villains. At one point, Henry almost spots Yolanda behind him, but she leaps/clings to the ceiling above. After he leaves, she hides in a corner while Courtney hovers outside the window, as Principal Bowin slips in… and begins playing the violin for the patient, though to no anticipated effect. (“Is she a villain, too??” the duo wonder.) The girls then flee the hospital, but not without lunch acquaintance Beth, who was visiting her doctor mom, taking notice.

Back at Courtney’s, Yolanda brings the team-up to a halt, saying she doesn’t think she should be Wildcat — that she first needs to return to who she used to be, before she adopts any new persona. But when she goes home and makes an impassioned plea to her family to allow her to move forward with her life and be her old self, Mom holds firm, “You’ll never be. You disgraced your family, and yourself!” Sent to her room, Yolanda finds on her window sill the Wildcat costume with a note from Courtney: “I can’t do this alone!”  Moments later, Yolanda is suited back up and rapping at Courtney’s window.

Stargirl Dragon KingElsewhere this week:

* Inside the ISA bunker, Dr. Ito (aka Dragon King) admitted to Jordan/Icicle that he never quite understood the need for a “team,” though now he believes in the ISA more than any of the others. What’s more, “I’ll never betray you,” he stressed. “Not like The Shade.” (Oh, the shade!) Dr. Ito reports, “I’ve been working on my daughter,” while Jordan expresses an interest in helping his colleague complete a machine he has been working on. Dr. Ito appreciates the offer, echoing his own support for Project New America, through which “one generation’s ultimate sacrifice will protect the next.” Dr. Ito notes, “I won’t fail you like the Wizard,” who was “vile” to the doc when he first came to town. He then asks if he may have the deceased ISA member’s body. And Jordan agrees. Which is polite.

* Denise, the widow of William Zarick aka The Wizard, shows up at Pat’s auto body shop, clearly rattled by her son’s and husband’s deaths. Later picking up her fixed wagon, she shares with Pat that she is leaving Blue Valley for good, warning him, “Don’t trust this town…. William didn’t have a heart attack.” She states that Joey wanted to be “just like” his Dad, which frankly puzzles Pat, who knew William to be a vanilla councilman. Later, while combing the local junk yard for parts, Pat spots the Zaricks’ cat and Denise’s discarded wagon, emptied of all belongings except for Joey’s magician’s hat.
