Daydream, Google’s foray into the crowded virtual reality space, has hitherto used headsets that are simply holsters, a way of holding an Android smartphone right in front of your face so that it works as a pair of VR goggles. This makes Daydream’s cost of entry cheap—the headset can be a completely passive device with no electronics of its own—which is important for making VR accessible.

Lenovo’s $ 400 Mirage Solo, out today, is the first standalone Daydream headset. You don’t slot a phone into this one—the device has all the hardware it needs to provide a standalone VR experience. The hardware inside the headset is certainly phone-like; it has a Snapdragon 835 processor with 4GB RAM, 64GB of storage, and a 4,000mAh battery. It also contains phone-like sensors, with a gyroscope, accelerometer, and magnetometer. But because it’s built for VR, it has a couple of extra sensors: a pair of world-facing cameras that Google calls “WorldSense.”

WorldSense is Google’s inside-out, six-degree-of-freedom motion-tracking solution. As with similar systems in Microsoft’s HoloLens and the various Windows Mixed Reality headsets, the system combines data from the device’s internal sensors with data from the cameras to track the headset’s position and orientation in space, without requiring the fixed-base stations that are used on the first-generation HTC Vive and Oculus Rift devices.

GUEST: Do you make time to daydream? You might want to start. Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology say that that doing so is actually an indicator of your brain’s efficiency, creativity, and intelligence. Making time for mental space may seem like a strange concept. I know I never gave it much thought. But I have recently discovered t…Read More

Each kit comes with the first standalone Daydream VR headset, Lenovo’s Mirage Solo with Daydream, which arrives preloaded with over 700 Google Expeditions VR field trips as well as three exclusive Jane Goodall “Wild Immersion” videos. The VR field trips allow classrooms to explore the world and in order to help facilitate the learning experience, the videos include stopping points during which teachers can add more information or answer questions as well as talking points for teachers. Additionally, online lesson plans will be available to assist teachers in getting the most from the kit.

Along with headsets and software, the kit comes with a Lenovo Tab 4 PLUS 10-inch tablet, a Ruckus R510 commercial router, a cart or case depending on the size of the kit being purchased, training videos, expert consultation and monthly webinars.

Google Expeditions got started in 2015 as a limited-release learning platform, and it saw a wide release the following year. Last year, Google debuted a solo mode that made it easier for people to experience Expeditions outside of a classroom setting.

Lenovo’s VR Classroom will be available this April in the US and the fall for Canada. There are three kit tiers — a three-student pack, a 10-student pack and a 24-student pack — with the lowest tier starting at $ 2,899.

Plex jumps into VR on Google Daydream headsets https://briefnews.eu/plex-jumps-into-vr-on-google-daydream-headsets/ https://briefnews.eu/plex-jumps-into-vr-on-google-daydream-headsets/#respond Wed, 24 Jan 2018 14:02:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/plex-jumps-into-vr-on-google-daydream-headsets/

Last year Plex’s reach extended to cover live TV and automobiles, so in 2018 the company is jumping into yet another platform: virtual reality. As it has done before, the company brought in the developer of a community project, Plevr, to work on the new client and Plex VR looks like a nice addition. The content browsing experience I saw in a short demo looked excellent. It really made us of the virtual space with touches like selecting a title popping it out into a virtual DVD case that users could hold, rotate or put down on a table in front of them while they flipped through other options.

That interactivity goes along with comfort as two of three pillars marketing VP Scott Hancock discussed, and comfort comes into play as users can adjust the screen’s size or position at any time. Want to lay down and watch it on the ceiling of a swanky apartment instead of a wall, in a blank void or in a drive-in? It’s all possible. In the apartment environment, for example, when video pauses, the lights come on and shades come up mimicking real-world smart homes.

Plex VR social viewing

Plex

The third pillar may be the most important for adoption, and that’s social. Plex VR allows for up to four users at once, who can easily watch video streaming from a Plex Media Server while seeing each other’s avatars, voice chatting or using the Daydream controller to toss things around and point out things on-screen.

So far, many big media VR apps haven’t included a social element, but for Plex owners who already have well-stocked media libraries, it could be an easy way to share viewing across any distance. The social setup includes a friends list with online statuses similar to PlayStation or Xbox Live, although of course, you can appear offline if you’d rather sit down for a solo session.

Plex VR is available for free, although for now, it’s only out on Daydream VR headsets. To dive into the social features will require at least one of the four users to have Plex Pass, however, users can try it out for free for a week even without that.

Daydream Impact is Google’s new philanthropy program for VR https://briefnews.eu/daydream-impact-is-googles-new-philanthropy-program-for-vr/ https://briefnews.eu/daydream-impact-is-googles-new-philanthropy-program-for-vr/#respond Sun, 03 Dec 2017 12:55:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/daydream-impact-is-googles-new-philanthropy-program-for-vr/

With its ability to transport users anywhere and give them any kind of experience, VR has huge potential as a tool for positive change. Google is highlighting that with its new philanthropy program, Daydream Impact.

This new initiative is designed to give organizations, non-profits and advocates the tools and training they need to make 360-degree experiences that bring people closer to their given topics. Google already worked with a handful of organizations on a pilot period for the program, producing the videos that you can see in this article.

Daydream Impact first provides groups with tutorials on making VR video content with a free Coursera online training course. It covers everything from pre to post-production, offering tips on getting the best shots and how to publish and promote your content. The other side of the program is a loaner service that provides qualified projects with a Jump 360-degree camera and a Google Expeditions kit as well as a Daydream View headset and Daydream-read smartphone. Groups will be given six months to create their projects and then showcase it.

So far, the program has produced projects on the struggles of the Congo from the Eastern Congo Initiative, as well as a look at the changes in coastline environments, anti-bullying pieces and has even been deployed in hospitals to help minimize anxiety for cancer patients during treatment.

“We’ve already learned that VR, although still an emerging platform, has so many more applications than we originally thought possible,” the Eastern Congo Initiative’s Dane Erickson said of the program. “We thought of this as a film for our donors and supporters, but through the Google Expedition program we’re beginning to see how VR can be used for education. Obviously we love connecting to donors, but connecting with kids, showing them our work in a classroom setting, that opens up a whole new avenue for our advocacy priorities.”

‘Rez Infinite’ arrives on your phone through Daydream VR https://briefnews.eu/rez-infinite-arrives-on-your-phone-through-daydream-vr/ https://briefnews.eu/rez-infinite-arrives-on-your-phone-through-daydream-vr/#respond Tue, 21 Nov 2017 00:50:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rez-infinite-arrives-on-your-phone-through-daydream-vr/

Rez Infinite is a sublime experience in virtual reality, but there’s a catch: that requirement for PlayStation VR or a PC usually means you’re tied down. That won’t be an issue after today, provided you have the right hardware: Enhance Games has released Rez Infinite for Android. You’ll need a Daydream-compatible VR headset with a controller (and the phone to match, of course), but you too can soar through virtual worlds and shoot enemies to a trance beat. And yes, the Infinite-only Area X is as visually intense as ever — modern mobile hardware is clearly up to the job.

The game is free to download, but only as a trial. If you want to unlock the full experience, you’ll need to pay $ 20 to unlock the full experience. Let’s be honest, though: you probably want to. While Rez has never been a particularly long game (a good player can blast through the core experience in less than an hour), it’s both very memorable and has extensive replayability. As it is, this is the most affordable way to play Rez Infinite in VR if you already have an eligible phone — you don’t need to buy a high-end headset (or consider upgrading your PC) just to see why its uniquely music-driven gameplay is so special.

ProBeat: Google killed the first Daydream and Tango phone after less than a month https://briefnews.eu/probeat-google-killed-the-first-daydream-and-tango-phone-after-less-than-a-month/ https://briefnews.eu/probeat-google-killed-the-first-daydream-and-tango-phone-after-less-than-a-month/#respond Fri, 01 Sep 2017 17:43:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/probeat-google-killed-the-first-daydream-and-tango-phone-after-less-than-a-month/

The first Daydream and Tango phone will be the last. Asus has Google’s ARCore to thank for that. I want to say the Asus ZenFone AR was dead on arrival, but that’s not completely true. Google did give it 27 days to live.

When I got my hands on an Asus Zenfone AR review unit, the goal was quite simple: Determine if this was a developer’s dream phone. First unveiled back in January, the ZenFone AR stood out as the first smartphone to support both Google’s Daydream and Tango platforms, and only the second to support the latter (Lenovo’s Phab 2 Pro was the first). It was supposed to launch sometime in Q2 2017.

Daydream is a virtual reality (VR) platform built into Android 7.0 Nougat and above. Tango is an augmented reality (AR) platform that detects users’ positions relative to places and objects around them without using GPS or other external signals.

Since the phone’s announcement, a few events combined to created the perfect storm that killed the ZenFone AR less than a month after it arrived.

First, more and more existing and new smartphones gained Daydream support as the months flew by. Flagship Android phones are now more likely to support Daydream than not. Next, Asus ZenFone AR was delayed. Instead of sometime between April and June, it debuted on August 3. And finally, Google launched the ARCore SDK preview on August 29.

The Android software development kit (SDK) brings augmented reality to existing and future Android phones without requiring additional sensors or hardware. ARCore is built on the work already done with Tango, which was first released in June 2014 but had very limited reach as it relies on specific hardware. ARCore is supposed to more broadly leverage Android — Google is working with manufacturers like Samsung, Huawei, LG, Asus, and others to get ARCore on 100 million devices by the end of the preview.

Asus must have known this was coming — Google named it as one of the manufacturers looking to bring ARCore to its devices. Still, it must hurt to watch your product become irrelevant in mere weeks.

The ZenFone AR was never going to be a mass-market phone. While I found the device very responsive in day-to-day tasks, and it certainly had the specs, it’s still no iPhone or Galaxy. Furthermore, the little time I did spend with it made clear the battery life wasn’t up to snuff (like because Daydream and Tango are so demanding) and the number of Tango apps was puny (I count 33 at the time of publishing).

But the ZenFone AR wasn’t aimed at your average consumer. It had, however, plenty of potential of being an Android developer’s main phone. It could have been a “good enough” flagship while also being the device you test your latest AR and VR creations. With the right marketing (“the first AR and VR phone” and “the only Android phone a developer needs”), it could have been the developer’s go-to smartphone.

Instead, there’s absolutely no reason to recommend the ZenFone AR over any of ARCore’s first supported devices: Google Pixel, Google Pixel XL, Samsung’s Galaxy S8, and Samsung’s Galaxy S8+. In fact, if you’re a developer looking to buy a smartphone, any of this year’s flagships will probably work. You could wait for the Pixel refresh coming next month (even though it doesn’t excite me), because it’s likely to set the tone for all upcoming high-end Android phones: Daydream and ARcore support will be a given.

ARCore’s promise is to bring AR to millions of Android phones. That’s a huge win for consumers and developers alike.

The only losers are Tango and the Asus ZenFone AR.

ProBeat is a column in which Emil rants about whatever crosses him that week.

Google: Daydream has ‘more than 150 apps’ https://briefnews.eu/google-daydream-has-more-than-150-apps/ https://briefnews.eu/google-daydream-has-more-than-150-apps/#respond Thu, 18 May 2017 19:13:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/google-daydream-has-more-than-150-apps/

At Google I/O 2017 developer conference yesterday, the company announced a standalone Daydream VR headset in partnership with Qualcomm, with Lenovo and HTC slated to release commercial versions later this year. Today, the company shared more details, including what developers can expect in Daydream 2.0. Google also shared a small tidbit: Developers have built “more than 150 apps” for Daydream so far.

Google unveiled the Daydream platform a year ago at I/O 2016, but the View headset only arrived in November. In January, Google started letting developers submit their Daydream VR apps to Google Play.

Facebook and Samsung have not shared how many apps are in the Gear VR store, but a quick count shows the number is around 1,000. But their platform has been around for longer, so it’s not a big surprise that it’s ahead of Daydream.

Like Microsoft, Google is facing an uphill battle in VR. The company will have an even tougher time with standalone headsets, given that Oculus and Vive have big game developers behind them, which Google will have to win over if its VR strategy is to succeed. Last month, it acquired developer Owlchemy Labs, which produced the popular Job Simulator VR game.

But the number of apps is only one measure of success. Quality is more important, especially when it comes to virtual reality. On mobile, trying an app is a trivial task. In VR, you’re putting in a lot more effort because it’s immersing you in a new experience. If it’s not good, you will have wasted a lot more time than it takes to try a mobile app.

But it’s still important to watch which platforms developers are building for. Apps are a big reason why Android and iOS succeeded while their competitors failed. In the VR race, history could very well repeat itself: Where developers go, users will follow. And where users go, more developers will follow.

HTC Vive’s upcoming tracker hacked to work with Google Daydream https://briefnews.eu/htc-vives-upcoming-tracker-hacked-to-work-with-google-daydream/ https://briefnews.eu/htc-vives-upcoming-tracker-hacked-to-work-with-google-daydream/#respond Sat, 18 Feb 2017 11:36:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/htc-vives-upcoming-tracker-hacked-to-work-with-google-daydream/ Master Shapes are, well, "masters" of hacking the HTC Vive.

Back at CES we met a small creative studio with some big technical plans for the HTC Vive’s upcoming Tracker peripheral.

The team’s name was Master of Shapes, and they were one of the groups that HTC had gathered to showcase some of the many applications for the new device. Specifically, they made a technical demonstration for makeshift local multiplayer VR, called Cover Me. The tracker was attached to a phone, which itself was attached to a gun peripheral, allowing someone to look into a VR user’s world and help them out by shooting enemies. The potential for multiplayer was huge, but it also showcased how the Tracker could be used to make smartphone-based headsets positionally tracked.

At the time, Master of Shapes said that was “fully doable”. Now? It’s been done.

processstills-1  The team today posted a look at its experiments attaching the Tracker to Google’s Daydream View, a device that doesn’t positionally track a user’s head movements. With a 3D printed mount, the Tracker is stuck on the front of the headset and tracked by the same base stations that track the Vive itself. The team’s work on Cover Me meant it had already figured out how to translate the Tracker’s positional data to Android phones, thus it was quickly able to make a true mobile room scale VR experience.

In the blog, Creative Director Adam Amaral noted that the experience wasn’t as solid as the traditional Vive setup and, since there are no Daydream games that have implemented positional tracking tech, the team used its demo for Cover Me instead.

“I will say the daydream with added room scale is pretty awesome,” Amaral wrote. “There is something really cool about having no tether and sharper resolution.”

daydreamheader_split-2

The concept is purely experimental, but Master of Shapes plans to keep on with the experimentation. Speaking to UploadVR, Amaral said the team was also going to look at attaching the device to Daydream’s remote controller, which currently offers tracking in only a few directions. In theory, adding the Tracker to the device could make it a fully tracked device akin to Vive’s own wands. He also teased that the company has been using the Tracker with a phone supported by Google’s Tango 3D mapping tech too.

This could also turn Cover Me itself from a game in which one player is in VR, and one is using a phone, to two players being fully in VR. People with both a Vive and a smartphone-based headset could experience new types of VR content.

We’re not sure how viable the concept is in the market, but it’s still a fascinating concept. The Vive Tracker is expected to release in Q2, and there are plenty of developers that want to get their hands on it.

Chrome for Android adds WebVR support for the Daydream headset https://briefnews.eu/chrome-for-android-adds-webvr-support-for-the-daydream-headset/ https://briefnews.eu/chrome-for-android-adds-webvr-support-for-the-daydream-headset/#respond Thu, 09 Feb 2017 18:28:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chrome-for-android-adds-webvr-support-for-the-daydream-headset/

If you have a Daydream VR headset, you may want to update your Android phone’s Chrome browser ASAP. Chrome’s stable version now supports WebVR, a JavaScript API necessary for experiences loaded on browsers to work on a VR device. Google introduced WebVR support in Chrome beta for Android last year, but now you don’t have to stick with the browser’s experimental channel anymore.

Megan Lindsay, Chrome’s product manager, listed a number of VR content you can load on your phone and view on Daydream right now. They include the 300,000+ celeb homes and tourist attractions on Matterport, as well as the Bear71 nature documentary. Within gives you access to award-winning virtual reality films, while Sketchfab features VR scenes from various videos games, anime and other sources. You can also pick up and play with objects using your Daydream controller on PlayCanvas’ WebVR Lab. This list is bound to expand, since Google is encouraging developers to sign up and make their creations viewable on Daydream.

You’ll of course have to use a Daydream-ready phone like the Pixel to access all those on the headset. But when Google launches WebVR support for other headsets like the Cardboard — and it plans to do so in the future — you can use other smartphones’ Chrome browser. The company is also working to add WebVR support to Chrome on computers for the sake of desktop VR headsets like the Oculus Rift.
